The announcement makes sense, given that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/15/gamespy-tech-unreal-engine-3-crossplatform-ps3-and-pc-online/">GameSpy joined Epic's Integrated Partners Program in August</a>, marrying the company's technology with Unreal Engine 3 and permitting cross-platform play across both the PC and PS3. <br /><br />According to a statement, both versions of <em>UT3 </em>will leverage off of GameSpy's tools for multiplayer matchmaking, in-game and out-of-game messaging, tracking players stats, VoIP messaging, and online ranking and leaderboards. However, while interoperability between the two versions of <em>UT3 </em>is <em>expected</em>, this still has not yet been confirmed. The game is currently earmarked on our calenders for release for the PC on November 19, while the PS3 version <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/09/rein-ut3-ps3-likely-for-this-year-in-america/">remains something of a mystery</a>.<br /><br />[Via press release]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/12/unreal-tournament-3-multiplayer-powered-by-gamespy/">Unreal Tournament 3 multiplayer powered by GameSpy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 Nov 2007 10:59:00 EST. Sony Computer Entertainment America has announced its <a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=109&amp;STORY=/www/story/11-08-2007/0004700693&amp;EDATE=">2007 holiday lineup</a> for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Network and PlayStation Portable. The full list (posted after the break) contains every released and unreleased title the publisher expects to add to the cacophony of "Buy me!" screams echoing throughout the aisles this festive season.<br />
<br />
Highlights includes the cringe-inducing <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/PAIN/">PAIN</a></span>, stealth saga <span style="font-style: italic;">Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus</span> and Lara Croft gender bender, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/uncharted"><span style="font-style: italic;">Uncharted: Drake's Fortune</span></a> for PS3. You'll also spot a burst of confidence regarding the timely arrival of one <span style="font-style: italic;">Unreal Tournament III</span>, despite the fact that publisher Midway has <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/02/midway-expects-unreal-tournament-3-to-slip-into-08/">written it off</a> for 2007. Is Epic Games going to perform an unlikely <span style="font-style: italic;">Unreal</span> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/11/unreal-tournament-3-gets-no-guarantee-of-nov-release-from-epi/">miracle</a>, or did someone miss the memo?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/08/sony-announces-holiday-lineup-still-believes-in-unreal-tourname/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony announces holiday lineup, still believes in Unreal Tournament 3</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/08/sony-announces-holiday-lineup-still-believes-in-unreal-tourname/">Sony announces holiday lineup, still believes in Unreal Tournament 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 Nov 2007 14:02:00 EST. Did you know that the American PS3 version of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Stranglehold/">Stranglehold</a></em> slow-mo dived out the door this week? Midway's destructive <em>Hard Boiled</em> follow-up, like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/06/the-orange-box-delayed-on-ps3/">several</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/23/graw-2-delayed-for-ps3-demo-soon-for-xbox-360/">PS3</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/06/medal-of-honor-airborne-ps3-delayed-until-november/">games</a> in the past few months, had been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/31/stranglehold-slips-again-on-pc-ps3/">pushed</a> off the edge of the calendar so many times that many eventually lost sight of it, played it on competing platforms or just moved on to other things. Midway CEO David F. Zucker <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=16091">recently discussed</a> the predicament following a <strike>Top Secret!</strike> financial conference call, noting that technical hurdles on Sony's platform initially slowed them down. <br /><br />"For our first wave of next-gen games... lead development has been on the Xbox 360, due to its earlier introduction and larger installed base," said Zucker. "We ran into some technical issues developing for the PlayStation 3 that have taken more time to finalize than we expected." He now considers said issues resolved, however, and expects "PS3 versions of [Midway] titles to ship day and date" with those on other platforms beginning next year. As for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/02/midway-expects-unreal-tournament-3-to-slip-into-08/"><em>Unreal Tournament III</em></a>, PS3 owners should look for it "as soon as it's ready."<br /><br />Finally, with development hassles supposedly out of the way, Midway can continue work on a soon-to-be-announced title described by Zucker as an "ambitious open-world game." We certainly hope he means the <em>Psi-Ops</em> meets <em>Crackdown </em>adventure we just envisioned.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/02/midway-expects-no-more-ps3-delays-in-2008/">Midway expects no more PS3 delays in 2008</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 02 Nov 2007 18:25:00 EST. <p>For the <em>Unreal</em> devotees, it shouldn't come as surprising that <em>Unreal Tournament III</em> is shaping up quite nicely. Already far along in development, this PC/PS3 first person shooter is pushing the boundaries of the already-impressive Unreal Engine even further. Not only are the weapons demonstrated in this video, but the vehicles are, as well. Some of them are quite creative, we have to admit.<br /><br />While we're impressed, we're worried that the current popularity of <em>Warhawk</em> may deter fans from switching to yet another multiplayer shooter. While <em>UTIII</em> and <em>Warhawk</em> have very different approaches to the genre, we hope that gamers don't get too burned out from their endless <em>Warhawk</em> sessions.<br /><br />[Thanks, Daichi!]</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/29/developers-walk-through-unreal-tournament-iii/">Developers walk through Unreal Tournament III</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 29 Aug 2007 23:00:00 EST. The rumour mill is working overtime today, churning out bags and bags of delicious untruthes. The latest of which is that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/UnrealTournament3"><em>Unreal Tournament 3</em></a> will feature PC to PS3 cross play and that the PS3 will be the only console to support the feature. We contacted Mark Rein for clarification and he responded exactly as we expected him to. "We have not made a decision on PS3 vs. PC play."<br /><br />To clarify further, for those confused, the PS3 version of <em>UT3</em> will feature keyboard and mouse but PC to PS3 cross play has not been decided on yet. Rein listed some hurdles that need to be jumped before the feature could be implemented during his <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/03/joystiq-interviews-unreal-tournament-3s-mark-rein/">interview with Joystiq</a>. One of those hurdles? Control differences. So with that fixed, it's a possibility. They just haven't decided yet. Yes, we're really driving that point home. <br /><br />Keep those rumours coming and we'll keep debunking them. Probably.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/07/unreal-tournament-3-to-feature-pc-to-ps3-cross-play-still-undec/">Unreal Tournament 3 to feature PC to PS3 cross play? Epic Games Vice President Mark Rein has confirmed on the <a href="http://utforums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=574996">official forums</a> that <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/UnrealTournament3/">Unreal Tournament 3</a></em> for the PlayStation 3 will support keyboard and mouse.<br /><br />"[Designer Steve Polge] is confident we are doing it in a way that will be balanced without feeling "gimped" for either side," he said. Rein also added that there will be options to "allow people to choose whether or not they want to allow mixed controller vs. keyboard/mouse games or not." In our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/03/joystiq-interviews-unreal-tournament-3s-mark-rein/">recent interview</a> with Rein, he was still unsure if this feature would be implemented.<br /><br />Will the battle for the best first-person shooter controls -- gamepad or keyboard and mouse -- now be fought locally? Is this further evidence that Epic will implement the PS3 and PC cross-platform multiplayer? Our fingers are crossed.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unreal-tournament-iii/">Unreal Tournament III (PS3)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unreal-tournament-iii/#311655"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/ut3_e32007_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unreal-tournament-iii/#311656"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/ut3_e32007_06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unreal-tournament-iii/#311657"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/ut3_e32007_07_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unreal-tournament-iii/#311658"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/ut3_e32007_08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unreal-tournament-iii/#311659"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/ut3_e32007_09_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/08/03/ut3-on-ps3-confirmed-to-have-keyboard-and-mouse-support/">PS3 Fanboy</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/03/keyboard-and-mouse-support-for-ut3-ps3/">Keyboard and mouse support for UT3 PS3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 03 Aug 2007 20:25:00 EST. Xbox 360 users who want to shoot up their PC counterparts in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Unreal/">Unreal</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/UnrealTournament3/">Tournament 3</a></em> are out of luck -- <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Epic/">Epic</a> vice president Mark Rein has confirmed on the <a href="http://utforums.epicgames.com/showpost.php?p=24945415&amp;postcount=14">developer's forums</a> that the first-person shooter will not use Games For Windows Live and will therefore not feature cross-platform play between Microsoft's console and the PC. <br /><br />Rein said that they have not decided about cross-platform play between PC and the PlayStation 3. "We're not 100% sure that users want that feature but if we get time we'll play around with it and see how it works," he said. Sony's console will have the ability <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/11/unreal-tournament-iii-timed-exclusive-for-ps3-can-share-mods-wi/">to share PC mods</a>, so the the logistics of PC vs. PS3 play shouldn't be too hard. <br /><br />No release date has been given but <em>Unreal Tournament 3 </em>has been confirmed as a timed exclusive for the PS3.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unreal-tournament-iii/">Unreal Tournament III (PS3)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unreal-tournament-iii/#311655"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/ut3_e32007_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unreal-tournament-iii/#311656"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/ut3_e32007_06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unreal-tournament-iii/#311657"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/ut3_e32007_07_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unreal-tournament-iii/#311658"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/ut3_e32007_08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unreal-tournament-iii/#311659"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/ut3_e32007_09_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/20/unreal-tournament-3-not-using-games-for-windows-live/">Unreal Tournament 3 not using Games for Windows Live</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 20 Jul 2007 20:45:00 EST. <div align="left">At this rate, it's becoming difficult <em>not</em> to play Cliffy B's roadie-running extravaganza. During an interview with Game Head's Geoff Keighley, Epic VP Mark Rein <a href="http://www.macworld.com/news/2007/07/16/gearsofwar/index.php">revealed</a> that <em>Gears of War</em> is in development for Mac OS X, along with <em>Unreal Tournament 3</em>. This news follows Epic's E3 announcement that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/10/gears-of-war-and-viva-pinata-go-to-pc/"><em>Gears</em> is in development for PC</a>, with additional features not seen in the Xbox 360 version.<br /><br />No development details or release dates were mentioned. Given the casual nature of this announcement, however, one can assume that both <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gearsofwar"><em>Gears</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/unrealtournament"><em>UT3</em></a> will be ported from the PC to OS X using Cider, rather than being developed natively. No love for PowerPC users; though it might be time to consider that Intel-based Apple you've been eyeing ...<br /><br />[<strong>Update</strong>: It appears these are coming to the Mac natively, not through the magic of Cider, according to <a href="http://icculus.org/cgi-bin/finger/finger.pl?user=icculus">this comment</a> from MacSoft's Ryan Gordon: "And no, neither game is using Cider." Impressive. Thanks for the link, David!]<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2007/07/17/gears-of-war-will-be-roadie-running-onto-macs/">X3F</a>]</div>

We got to see <em>Unreal Tournament III</em> running side by side on PC and PS3. Both versions obviously looked fantsatic, and it was great to see how nearly identical they look. However, the incredible resolution of the PC version made it the clearly superior offering. A representative from Epic told us that the PS3 version is still being tweaked, and that details about the resolution and framerate it will run at won't be revealed yet as they're still trying to optimize the performance for the console.<br /><br /><em>UTIII</em> will feature the return of many fan-favorite weapons, but we saw a couple of a new additions. Of particular note had to be a weapon that generated a time-warping field. A cube can be created, and within that cube, all time gets slowed down significantly. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the field, we saw the Flak Cannon shoot into the field. As the spray entered the field, it came to a crawl, and the player was able to run past the flak and see it exit the other side, at full momentum. We don't know if this will make a significant change to battles, but it certainly was a cool effect, nonetheless.<br /><br />In addition, <em>UTIII</em> will feature a greater variety of vehicles. The coolest addition has to be the hoverboard, which is readily accessible at all times. This allows players to move much more quickly, and can be used while holding a CTF flag. A new single player mode was briefly demonstrated, and it shows a lot of potential. The offline single player from previous <em>Unreal Tournament</em> titles were slim on story and options. In the newly updated single player campaign, players will be able to watch a story unfold, and choose a non-linear path through various missions.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unreal-tournament-iii-1/">Unreal Tournament III (PS3)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unreal-tournament-iii-1/#311720"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/playstation.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/ut3_e32007_19_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unreal-tournament-iii-1/#311721"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/playstation.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/ut3_e32007_20_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unreal-tournament-iii-1/#311722"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/playstation.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/ut3_e32007_21_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unreal-tournament-iii-1/#311723"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/playstation.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/ut3_e32007_22_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unreal-tournament-iii-1/#311696"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/playstation.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/ut3_e32007_28_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/13/hands-on-unreal-tournament-iii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hands-on Unreal Tournament III</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/13/hands-on-unreal-tournament-iii/">Hands-on Unreal Tournament III</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Jul 2007 20:04:00 EST. We'd link the issue here, but <a href="http://www.officialxboxmagazine.com/">their site</a> is currently under construction. As <a href="http://www.beyondunreal.com/daedalus/singlepost.php?id=10690">BeyondUnreal</a> reports, <em>UT3</em> -- which is decidedly <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/29/new-details-on-unreal-tournament-3/">not for wimps</a> -- will be shipping with "three to four dozen multiplayer maps." This is consistent with what they told CVG back in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/03/epic-wants-40-ut3-maps-ponders-platform-exclusive-content/">February</a>. <br /><br />Judging from their work on <em>Unreal Tournament 2003</em> and <em>2004</em>, we're willing to bet that a good chunk of these maps -- these "pain sanctuaries," if you will -- are remixed versions of <em>UT</em> classics. Our cup still runneth over as it's good to know that Epic isn't slacking off in a day and age where <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/shadowrun">some</a> <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/TeamFortress2/">folks</a> think it's cool to ship with a map count in the single digits.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/05/unreal-tournament-3-to-ship-with-dozens-of-multiplayer-maps/">Unreal Tournament 3 to ship with dozens of multiplayer maps</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 05 Jul 2007 13:45:00 EST. A feature story in the latest Official Xbox Magazine has revealed some new details about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Epic/">Epic Games'</a> upcoming <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/unreal">Unreal</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/unrealtournament">Tournament</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/unrealtournament3">3</a></em> as well as some hype-tacular words by lead designer Steven Polge. Additions to the game include:<br />
<ul>
    <li>Four-player co-op and two-player split-screen in the single-player campaign</li>
    <li>18 vehicles and five types of turrets</li>
    <li>Hoverboards</li>
</ul>
Polge also made a few claims sure to be cited in any brouhaha concerning the shooter. Referencing the Great Keyboard &amp; Mouse vs. Controller <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/23/shadowrun-keyboard-versus-controller-in-the-final-battle/">Debate</a>, the designer claimed that <em>UT3's</em> controls are so good that half of the staff prefer the Xbox 360 version. <br /><br />Also noted were the improvements in <em>Unreal Engine 3</em>, as exemplified by contrasting the game to previous Epic title <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gearsofwar"><em>Gears of War</em></a>. Polge said that <em>UT3 </em>is "<em>Gears</em> on crack. Cover is for wimps!" You hear that, gamers who bought his company's previous Xbox 360 title? You're a bunch of wimps! (Until <em>Gears of War 2</em> is announced, of course.)<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/29/new-details-on-unreal-tournament-3/">New details on Unreal Tournament 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 29 May 2007 21:15:00 EST. From the translation and follow up by <a href="http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/12886/UT3-More-Details-Surface-on-SinglePlayer-Campaign/">TeamXbox</a> we learn that <em>Unreal Tournament 3</em> will include a co-op option for the campaign, similar to how <em>Gears of War</em> works. They are also implementing voice commands where you'll be able to give a bot simple instructions to carry out, like navigating a vehicle or protecting a base. Morris also confirms that there will be 12 weapons, 15 vehicles, and 30 plus maps to enjoy. And as always, we'll be playing <em>Unreal Tournament 3</em> on our Xbox 360s "when it's done" ... because that's how Epic rolls.<br /><br />[Thanks, <a href="http://www.rhrides.com">DjDATZ</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/28/new-unreal-tournament-3-details-emerge/">New Unreal Tournament 3 details emerge</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 28 Feb 2007 19:30:00 EST. "[That's] substantially more than other games in the genre," observed Morris; indeed, but not necessarily enough to make <em>UT3</em> a genre standout. The franchise has yet to take hold on console platforms.<br /><br />Perhaps, as Morris suggests, Epic would boost <em>UT3's</em> console presence by offering exclusive content for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 through post-release updates. While certainly a bonus, offering platform-exclusive content is becoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/17/inconceivable-ps3-to-get-its-own-exclusive-gta-iv-episodes/" target="_blank">standard practice</a>. Where <em>UT3</em> could really shine is through <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/29/epic-aims-for-unreal-tournament-user-mods-on-ps3-360/" target="_blank">user mod support</a>. If epic could coerce Sony and particularly Microsoft into opening their consoles up to user-created content it would put <em>UT3</em> into a unique class of console FPS unto itself.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/03/epic-wants-40-ut3-maps-ponders-platform-exclusive-content/">Epic wants 40 UT3 maps, ponders platform-exclusive content</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 03 Feb 2007 19:28:00 EST. Rein explained that the reason for delaying confirmation of <a target="_blank" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/25/unreal-tournament-2007-renamed-confirmed-for-360/"><em>UT3 </em>on 360</a> was tied to this issue, as Epic was unsure that Microsoft's strict certification process would allow for user mods on the console. Rein admitted that "it's still a bit of an open issue," but added that "we've had some pretty clear indications that we'll be able to [bring mods to Xbox 360]."<br /><br />It's unclear how mods would be created and distributed for console use. On Xbox 360, given potential leverage earned by <em>Gears of War's</em> success, perhaps Epic could smuggle mods through <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/11/microsoft-launches-xna-creators-club/" target="_blank">XNA</a>. More likely, Epic would convert select user-created mods for the PC version and distribute them via Xbox Live Marketplace (as a courtesy, we would hope). On PS3, there seem to be more "open" possibilities, but the process could be equally simplified.<br /><br />[Via <a target="_blank" href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3156782">1UP</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/29/epic-aims-for-unreal-tournament-user-mods-on-ps3-360/">Epic aims for Unreal Tournament user mods on PS3, 360</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 29 Jan 2007 22:15:00 EST. The furious first-person fragger will also see its name changed to <em>Unreal Tournament 3</em>, no doubt in reference to <em>Unreal Engine 3</em> powering the lusciously rendered proceedings. Of course, this requires you to erase one of the previous titles from your memory, lest <em>Unreal Tournament 3</em> becomes the <em>fourth</em> game in the series. <br /><br />Epic Games promises to tweak online modes to best suit each platform and will include a substantial single-player component to match the multiplayer mayhem. In addition, owners of the PC version will be able to design their own levels and game modes, thanks to the accompanying <em>Unreal Engine Toolset</em>. By ways of CNN's <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2006/08/22/commentary/column_gaming/index.htm">Game Over</a> column, analyst P.J. McNealy has asserted that 2007's <em>Medal of Honor</em> would be the first game to benefit from EA's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/21/ea-adopts-epics-unreal-engine-for-select-next-gen-titles/">adoption of Unreal Engine 3</a>, with an unannounced title, <em>Dead Space,</em> to follow after. The latter game is likely not based on the office block that developed <em>Rise of the Imperfects</em>.<br /><br />The rest of the column ponders the fate of RenderWare, the widely used middleware engine that EA obtained along with <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/news.php?aid=3879">their purchase of Criterion</a> just over two years ago. Apart from the obvious benefit of having <em>Burnout</em> in the stable, EA initially stated that they intended to use an updated version of the engine for next-gen products, none of which have so far managed to materialize (<em>Burnout Revenge</em> for the Xbox 360 was mostly a port, after all). While it's conceivable that RenderWare has since been surpassed by Epic's technology, Mark Rein gives a far more reasonable explanation (yes, really) in an interview with <a href="http://firingsquad.com/news/newsarticle.asp?searchid=11816">FiringSquad</a>.<br /><br />He suggests that "it comes down to smart resource management" and that EA is merely picking the best engine for the job. Unreal Engine 3 would presumably save them time and money for specific games and could be used in conjunction with their in-house tools. Apparently, you can never have too many engines at your disposal. Perhaps a good question to ask would be: how important is the graphics engine to you? Are you more likely to play a game knowing that it uses <em>Source</em> or <em>Unreal</em>, or is the visual end result the only thing that matters (besides that gameplay thing)?<br /><br /><a href="http://money.cnn.com/2006/08/22/commentary/column_gaming/index.htm">Read</a> - EA's Engine Acquisition examined<br /><a href="http://firingsquad.com/news/newsarticle.asp?searchid=11816">Read</a> - Mark Rein on EA's adoption of Unreal<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/22/money-guy-says-moh-next-game-to-use-unreal-engine/">Money guy says next MoH uses Unreal engine</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Aug 2006 20:25:00 EST. Rein notes that developers were just receiving final developments kits when E3 rolled around, whereas the Xbox 360 units were not yet available during the expo a year before. "So Sony's actually maybe in a better place vis-a-vis Microsoft in relation to launch."<br /><br />Coupled with news of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/26/sony-pr-rep-confirms-10-000-ps3-dev-kit-shipments/">10,000 development kits</a> being shipped off to eager programmers, it would appear that the PS3 is indeed in a good place for developers. Of course, that only amplifies the importance of having companies like Epic use the tools and the time given them to craft excellent experiences. After all, the best place for the PS3 to be in would be someone's living room, and the only way it's going to get there initially is with the aid of some killer launch titles. Where are they?<br /><br />In Mark Rein's house, apparently. "I know we're getting some great results with it back at our house, so I would expect other developers will be as well." Once Sony announces the PS3's full launch lineup, we'll be in a better position to see how pronounced the development kit advantage really is.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/26/rein-reckons-ps3-in-a-better-place-for-launch-than-360/">Rein reckons PS3 "in a better place" for launch than 360</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 26 Jul 2006 21:25:00 EST. Dubbed <em>Unreal Anthology</em>, their neat little package will contain the original Nali slaughterfest, <em>Unreal</em>, its <em>Return to Na Pali</em> expansion pack, <em>Unreal II: The Awakening, Unreal Tournament: Game of the Year Edition</em> and <em>Unreal Tournament 2004: Editor's Choice Edition</em>. <br /><br />Come this August, you'll be able to waltz into a store and pick up three great first-person shooters (and one alarmingly average one) for the satisfying sum of $29.99. You may also want to peruse the rest of the PC section and discover all the other titles you've missed in the years that you've been trapped in cryogenic suspension (yes, <em>Half-Life</em> has a sequel now).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/15/midway-announces-unreal-anthology/">Midway announces Unreal Anthology</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 15 Jun 2006 16:25:00 EST. So, we all know it's pretty. How pretty? Super duper pretty. It'll
make you give up religion and find faith in fragfests, it's so pretty. Beyond it being pretty, what else was there to
show off? <br /><br />Epic showed off Kismet, an advanced scripting system that allowed them to create gameplay
elements in a graphical UI that strongly resembled a flowchart. It's this middleware system that they claim will
prevent the budgets of next-gen projects using their engine from jumping 200-300%, instead citing a more reasonable
50%.<br /><br />The ability to simplify many of the core game design elements will theoretically result in increased
creativity; it'll be amazing to see what the mod community turns out using these tools. <br /><br />They showed off the
system running on both a high end Dell Renegade and a PS3 dev kit, both of which elicited many oohs and aahs, despite
the fact the PS3 version wasn't running on all of the system's SPUs and contained some textures from <em>Unreal
Tournament 2004.</em> For a more in-depth look at the demonstrations, check out Gamespot and GamesIndustry.biz.<br
/><br /><a href="http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/unrealtournament2007/news.html?sid=6146458">Read</a> - Epic shows
off Unreal tools [Gamespot]<br /><a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=7189">Read</a> - Getting
Unreal with Epic's Mark Rein [GamesIndustry.biz]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/03/27/epic-shows-off-ue3-and-friends-at-gdc/">Epic shows off Unreal Engine 3 at GDC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Mar 2006 23:00:00 EST.
