We were certain -- <em>absolutely</em> certain -- that the epidemic of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrrvkPo7TZ4">fractured television screens</a> which cropped up with the release of the Wii had passed. Everyone's heard the horror stories, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/12/16/wii-related-injury-roundup/">seen the blackened eyes</a> and witnessed the ruined electronics, we thought. Everyone now knows the methods of avoiding Wiimote accidents during their exuberant <em>Wii Sports</em> bouts, we thought. The Home Shopping Network recently proved the inaccuracy of this observation.<br />
<br />
The hilarity unfolds in <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a07W2t2wcRA#t=04m54s">the video after the jump</a>. While some might grimace at the fate of the poor television featured in the video, remember that they're charging $330 for a Wii and 15 completely unnecessary controller attachments. Call it an accident, if you'd like -- we call it Karma in action.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/18/hsn-teaches-valuable-lesson-about-wii-accessory-safety/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>HSN teaches valuable lesson about Wii accessory safety</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/18/hsn-teaches-valuable-lesson-about-wii-accessory-safety/">HSN teaches valuable lesson about Wii accessory safety</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 18 Oct 2009 18:30:00 EST. <br />Today we're wondering about some of the more horrible things that could've happened to your DS. We've been known to drop ours every now and then, and we were the unfortunate recipients of some scratches on the touch-screen after we let our little cousin play with it a bit. How about you? Have you let a relative play your DS, only to find it scratched every which way? Have you dropped it down a flight of stairs or on the street? What's the worst thing that's happened to your DS*?<br /><br /><font size="1">*Not counting <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/10/five-games-to-buy-for-people-you-hate/"><em>Elf Bowling</em></a></font><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/23/ds-daily-accidents/">DS Daily: Accidents</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 23 Dec 2008 09:00:00 EST. It appears that someone at Sony proper forgot to drink their morning coffee and accidentally threw the wrong switch, resulting in a handful of lucky insomniacs getting an early glimpse at the PS3's oft-delayed news-and-weather-service, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/life-with-playstation/">Life with PlayStation</a>. Sony's answer to the Wii's weather and news channels, which utilizes Google data to display real-time data, was originally expected to drop in July before <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/01/sony-delays-life-with-playstation-debut/">being delayed</a> on a pair of occasions, most recently <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/01/sony-promises-life-with-playstation-still-on-its-way/">earlier this month</a>. <br /><br />According to Sony, the application was posted for public download during testing "temporarily, by mistake," allowing<a href="http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=psnetwork&amp;thread.id=354181&amp;view=by_date_ascending&amp;page=7"> pictures like the one above</a> to be captured and posted online. As for when the app will get a proper release, Sony is only saying that an announcement will be made "shortly." For now, it seems that we'll have to go about getting our news and weather info the old fashioned way: by rolling our chairs over to the computer.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/17/some-lived-a-life-with-playstation-briefly/">Some lived a Life with PlayStation ... briefly</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 17 Sep 2008 14:00:00 EST. After spilling half a bottle of Coke across my DS earlier this week, this blogger immediately feared the worst. I need not have fretted, however. History has shown that Nintendo makes some pretty hardy, um, hardware, and after a frantic mopping and drying operation involving half the towels in the house and a hairdryer, the console functions perfectly. The R button is slightly sticky, but nothing major. It was a close call, mind you -- I very nearly had an excuse to buy one of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/21/nintendo-confirms-injection-of-color-for-european-dses/">new red DS Lites</a>! Bah.<br /><br />What's the worst you've put your DS through, only for the tough little blighter to keep on going?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/26/ds-daily-near-death-experiences/">DS Daily: Near-death experiences</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Jun 2008 08:00:00 EST. This past month has seen the addition of a number of useful features to Sony's underdog handheld, such as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/07/skype-skipping-original-psp-due-to-memory-limitations/">its Skype integration</a> and the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/06/gps-for-sony-psp-coming-to-us/">soon to be imported GPS functionality</a>. However, a story from a Michigan middle school recently broke the news of a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/06/sony-psp-sends-kid-to-hospital-with-leg-burns-thatll-teach-h/">heretofore unannounced ability of the PSP</a> -- instantaneous superheating, with possible leg disfigurement.<br /><br />Apparently, a student had the system turned off and in his pocket in the middle of band practice when, all of a sudden, it melted through his jean pocket, sending him to the hospital with second-degree burns on his leg. Sony has yet to comment on the incident, though <a href="http://www.us.playstation.com/PSP/Hardware#">their website</a> reminds PSP owners that using third-party batteries and charging equipment is likely to cause such an accident -- as will playing the trombone within a 5 foot radius of the system, apparently.<br /><br />In a beautiful showing of coincidence, the game occupying the system at the time of the meltdown supposedly was, you guessed it, <em>Burnout Dominator</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/10/student-hospitalized-after-suffering-leg-burns-from-pocketed-psp/">Student hospitalized after suffering leg burns from pocketed PSP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 10 Feb 2008 15:30:00 EST. <br />Horror of horrors -- last night, while vacuuming, someone in the house (read: <em>not your current writer!</em>) stripped the cable of the DS Lite charger. After the tears and accusations, it occurred to us that hinge cracks and falls aren't the only accidents that can befall our beloved handhelds. Anything similar happen to yours? We know <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/29/ds-daily-lost/">lost games</a> can be a problem, and we've heard about lost styli. Tell us about the worst things that have happened to your handhelds. What did you do? We'll be calling Nintendo today and hoping some kind soul will send a new charger over.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/04/ds-daily-destruction/">DS Daily: Destruction</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 04 Feb 2008 09:00:00 EST. <br />If you happen to be made of Lego bits, apparently, the Wii is not for you. In fact, all technology may well hate you and your cunningly fitted pieces. This short comedy video by YouTube user Metalzora, who specializes in the plights and perils of Lego people, features that thing we all fear -- high-flying Wii remotes destroying our televisions. We can only guess someone didn't replace their <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/07/safety-first-beef-up-that-wrist-strap/">wrist strap</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/07/friday-video-wii-hates-lego-dudes/">Friday Video: Wii hates Lego dudes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 07 Sep 2007 18:05:00 EST. Sure, you know you <em>should</em> wear the wrist strap. Nintendo scolds you about it, and you've seen what <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/21/its-all-fun-and-games/">can</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/15/wiimote-wrist-strap-breaks-at-auto-show-breaks-window/">happen</a>. But when you settle down for a little Wii gaming, do you strap it up, or maybe try an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/28/a-wii-solution-for-sweaty-hands/">alternative</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/13/its-goin-nowhere/">solution</a>? Does it depend on what you're playing? Sometimes, when we're in sideways mode, we admit we don't go for the strap, but any time we're a little more active, we put it on -- just in case.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/26/wii-warm-up-the-infamous-wrist-strap/">Wii Warm Up: The infamous wrist strap</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Jul 2007 09:00:00 EST. <br />The dried blood on the Polar White DS Lite above is from a car accident last week in which the driver of an ambulance lost control and hit a mid-size SUV at 60 MPH. Its warning lights were not flashing at the time. The impact caused the SUV to flip over four times before landing upside down; the ambulance was also thrown over the parkway shoulder. Thankfully, everyone survived the collision with only a few injuries. <br /><br />Isfet, one of the SUV's passengers and the owner of the DS Lite, happened to be playing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/etrianodyssey"><em>Etrian Odyssey</em></a> when the accident occurred. We knew that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dungeon">dungeon crawler</a> was pretty punishing, but we weren't aware that its difficulty was so severe that you can almost die while playing it. Despite the tumbling the handheld went through, it still works! Isfet is a bit worried, though, that it might start to smell if he doesn't clean it off soon. He's not sure if the blood was from his head or the piece of glass that stabbed his arm. <br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/19/limited-edition-blood-covered-ds-lite/">Limited edition blood-covered DS Lite</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Jul 2007 17:20:00 EST. In a very irregular press release from EA Japan this morning, originally causing us to think this was a hoax or accidental release, we contacted an equally confused EA rep and confirmed <em>SimCity DS </em>is going global. She let us know that the information distribution is being handled outside of EA's corporate HQ -- hence the confusion. The rep only had one screen to show us of the English version and told us that the game will be out in June.<br /><br /><em>SimCity DS</em> will allow players to put out fires by blowing on the DS's microphone, "wireless data exchange," sign off on proclamations using the stylus and do all the other things that urban planning junkies have been experiencing with the series for 20 years. The game is expected to be rated AO due to intense scenes of sexuality and violence -- oh please, it's <em>SimCity</em>!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/01/simcity-ds-not-just-for-the-japanese-anymore/">SimCity DS not just for the Japanese anymore</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 01 Mar 2007 01:00:00 EST. <p>It was only a matter of time. We bow our heads in a moment of silence for the first Nintendo Wii fatality. Is this a wakeup call to the industry? DO YOU HEAR THE CALL? </p>
<p>Seriously, they joke on the site that Fox News will see this and think its real. We're pretty sure that somewhere, somehow, someone is already believing it. Wait for the backlash to hit, probably spearheaded by everyone's favorite political gamehater, He Who Shall Not Be Named. In fact, let's declare a moratorium on him in the news, unless something spectacular happens, for all of 2007.</p>
<p>Check out the video after the jump, and use your Wiis carefully out there, folks.</p><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/22/todays-hottest-game-video-wii-fatality/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Today's hottest game video: Wii fatality</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/22/todays-hottest-game-video-wii-fatality/">Today's hottest game video: Wii fatality</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 22 Dec 2006 00:00:00 EST. You see, poor ZiKrOnIx got in a car accident which is bad enough, but the real tragic part is that his ... gasp ... Xbox 360 was involved too. The curvaceous gaming console was thrown from his car, ran over, hard drive cracked, power brick thrown, and faceplate crushed. And the end result? He took his battered 360 home, fired it up, and was greeted by the friendly glow of the dashboard. Yup, it's still working even after all the brutality it endured. If you have any Xbox 360 abuse stories, please tell your story below. And if you're the sick and twisted type, go check out the horrific pics after the jump.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.digg.com/gaming_news/Xbox_360_left_beaten_battered_but_still_playable_after_car_wreck">Digg</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/16/xbox-360-in-car-accident-but-lives/">Xbox 360 in car accident, but lives!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 Nov 2006 20:30:00 EST.
