You can now run the Epic Citadel app using Google's Chrome browser - specifically, the Chrome 21 release with built-in support for Stage 3D hardware acceleration can. Up until now it's been impossible to run Unreal Engine 3 on Linux because Adobe had stopped supporting its Adobe Flash Player 11, a supported Unreal Engine 3 platform and the only other viable solution for Linux users.

Google has continued to support Flash in its Chrome browser, however, bringing us to today. It's not the most ideal solution, but at least now it's a possibility. Just don't expect Epic Games to start officially supporting Linux anytime soon, even though Unreal Engine 3 ships with Linux code for developers.

"While Linux is not an officially supported Unreal Engine 3 platform, Epic provides Linux code to licensees via our own games that have utilized dedicated servers, and our licensees can ship UE3 games on Linux," Rein says. "We can confirm that users can run the UE3-powered Epic Citadel app, available at www.unrealengine.com/flash, on Linux machines, as Flash as a web solution works seamlessly across platforms. Epic continues to license Unreal Engine 3 for nine officially supported platforms, including Flash and Mac, and we have no additional plans for Linux to confirm at this time."
Unreal Engine 3 Citadel app runs on Linux now originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 27 Aug 2012 21:30:00 EST. Newell even weighed in on Windows 8, calling it a "catastrophe," All Things D reported.

"I think Windows 8 is a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space," Newell said. "I think we'll lose some of the top-tier PC/OEMs, who will exit the market. I think margins will be destroyed for a bunch of people. If that's true, then it will be good to have alternatives to hedge against that eventuality."

Newell's alternative is Linux, and he hopes to have all 2,500 games on Steam running on Linux as part of a "hedging strategy."

Newell also sees open, free-to-play-inspired platforms as critical to building healthy markets in the future - not just in gaming, but across all of technology. One Steam user in Kansas makes $150,000 a year making hats for TF2, Newell reported, and the same system can be implemented within services such as Photoshop, if only software companies could see its potential.

"That causes us to have conversations with Adobe, and we say the next version of Photoshop should look like a free-to-play game, and they say, 'We have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, but it sounds really bad,'" Newell said.

Valve predicts the future of computing mechanics lies within wearable computing in a post-touch world. It has so far built a $70,000 wearable rig that overlays information on physical objects, and Newell thinks "we will have bands on our wrists, and you'll be doing something with your hands, which are really expressive."

Maybe our hands will do something like hold a real-life, working portal gun. Maybe? Please?
Gabe Newell: Windows 8 is a 'catastrophe,' Adobe should try 'free-to-play' equivalent originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 25 Jul 2012 17:30:00 EST. Even with how prolific HTML5 has become across these great and vast internets, Adobe's Flash still accounts for the broad majority of internet content across the webs. For mobile-hardware manufacturers, the issue of Flashiness on their devices has, up until very recently, been a design decision, with OS developers weighing Flash's considerable processor and battery costs against its added utility; utility which Sony still hopes to include in the Vita.

Despite the cancellation of development and discontinuation of support for Flash on mobile devices, Sony Division 2 software-development head Muneki Shimada has said that his company is continuing its negotiations with Adobe, and that the end of Flash for mobile may not necessarily mean the end of Flash for Vita. We're not really sure how someone could negotiate a company back into supporting a dead platform, but if anyone knows anything about dead platforms, it's Sony.
Sony still holding out hope for Flash support on Vita originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 03 Dec 2011 16:30:00 EST. While everyone else was watching Apple talk about games on the iPhone, Adobe and Epic had a different cat to let out of its bag: Unreal Engine 3 support for the web-based Flash Player 11. During Adobe's annual ADOBE MAX conference, Adobe and Epic demonstrated a version of Unreal Tournament 3 running in Adobe's ubiquitous web plugin.

This could mark a major transition in social gaming, particularly on Facebook and Google Plus - social game developers already leverage Flash heavily on both platforms. Infinity Blade visuals on Facebook? It could happen.
We thought the thing improved a lot of aspects of browsing ourselves and now we find we're surfing the internet on our Wii a lot more than we used to.

Still, many of you out there are a bit upset over the thing. Well, we can shed some light on one common issue: the use of Flash 7 over the more modern versions available. Turns out, this is due to Adobe more than anyone else, as without the latest Flash SDK (software development kit) available, it's impossible for anyone looking to run the more modern versions of Flash (8 and 9) to do so without the use of Windows, Mac, or Linux. So, until Adobe releases the latest SDK, we're all stuck with the ancient Flash 7.

[Via Opera Watch]
Flash 7 in Opera browser is ...
