The announcement comes as the studio adds "Virtual Awakening," the fourth free add-on to the the game.

The add-on features new heroes, gameplay around asteroids and gas giants and new random events. It also includes the standard upgrades and AI improvements we've seen since the game's launch.

Endless Space will go on sale today on Steam for 50 percent off until March 18. It's a whole lot of strategy for $15.

The "Light of Polaris" includes new achievements, Steam Cloud support, holiday stuff and welcomed updates.

The holiday specials include the new Polaris Factory Wonder and Oros Gec Faction Hero. The general updates include some faction tweaks and a "no pirates" option. There's also enhancements to the battle AI and automatic battle actions.

Strategy fans should keep an eye out for this game in the upcoming Steam sale.

We gotta hand it to Amplitude Studios: they've certainly supported their game, taking a title that launched with some rough spots during the summer and smoothing them out. If you enjoy games like Civilization or Masters of Orion, you definitely owe it to yourself to download Endless Space and give it a spin around the Milky Way.

Red Alert: The update is not compatible with older saves. Developer Amplitude Studios stated the update was created with input from the 4X strategy game's community.

"We really appreciate our players' devotion and ideas; they've given us ammo for many more updates and upgrades beyond this one," said Amplitude CEO Mathieu Girard. "They're numerous, argumentative, and occasionally challenging, but we wouldn't have it any other way."

Other improvements to the game in today's update include a new trade route panel, upgraded diplomacy, improved hero management, improved AI and other necessary "fixes, amendments and changes."

Those who already purchased the game on PC automatically own the Mac version through SteamPlay. Endless Space also features cross-platform multiplayer between both platforms.

"We are hugely excited with the digital success of Endless Space so far and the acclaim by the press for the game," said Amplitude Studios CEO Mathieu Girard. "We hope to welcome many players and expect to see some cross-platform multiplayer rivalries pop up."

Endless Space is easily one of the best strategy games of the year. It's not as adept as Civilization 5 in getting new players adjusted, but it's the type of game that has a lot going for it once you're acquainted.
