Angry Birds Star Wars is kicking into hyperdrive on November 8, Rovio today revealed. According to USA Today, the game is coming to iOS, Android, and Windows 8 PCs. Along with the above video, Lucasfilm and Rovio released the below promotional image.

According to Lucasfilm licensing and consumer products marketing VP Paul Southern, the above characters aren't just "Angry Birds dressed up as Star Wars characters," but they do have "personalities which are kind of similar" to their counterparts. We can already imagine the names: Luke Skysquawker, Chewpecker... actually, that's all we've got.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the game uses the physics of Angry Birds Space, but is set on recognizable locations from the Star Wars series. We may well learn more details after the Times Square reveal later today.

Update: Rovio lets us know the game is coming to iOS, Android, Amazon Kindle Fire, Mac, PC (including Windows 8), and Windows Phone.

The Red Planet update for Angry Birds Space is coming this fall. Rovio hasn't said anything about pricing, but we expect this content won't be free - even if the last update was.

While Angry Birds is mostly "been there, done that" at this point in time, we've got to give it up to the setup seen above. The custom "Super Angry Birds" controller above is a complicated USB mod using wood and gyros. Hacks were definitely involved.

You adjust trajectory using the wooden sling, then pull back on the plastic bird to adjust power and let 'er rip. Simple. And if you're wondering how this setup handles those birds with special abilities, you only need watch the above video for 20 seconds or so. That neat little TNT box gets the job done!

Should all go according to plan, the presently unnamed new studio will be staffed by 20 to 30 folks within a year.

This announcement follows Rovio's recent acquisition of Futuremark Games Studio (Unstoppable Gorg, Shattered Horizon), as well as its highly successful launch of Angry Birds Space. "2012 is going to be a big year in gaming for us, and we're constantly on the lookout for great new talent," said Rovio's executive VP of games Petri Järvilehto in a statement to CVG. "We're excited to expand to Stockholm and work in one of Europe's gaming and innovation hotspots."

From what we're able to tell from the pictures on Wikipedia, Stockholm looks like a beautiful place, but we can understand that not everyone interested in working for Rovio will immediately fall for the city's Scandinavian charm. Don't worry though, future Rovio Stockholm employees. You'll learn to love it.

Futuremark Games was founded in 2008 and is based in Finland alongside Rovio, which may explain why Rovio chose to acquire this particular smaller studio over your own basement operation in Florida. Maybe.

"They are an incredibly talented and experienced team, and we are thrilled to have them on board," Rovio Entertainment CEO Mikael Hed said. "Rovio's success is founded on the excellence of our team, and Futuremark Games Studio is going to be a superb addition."

That might also be why Rovio chose Futuremark Games, but if it helps just keep telling yourself that this is a classic case of nationalism.

It's that kind of casual, absentminded purchase that has propelled the game to an astounding ten million downloads.

Rovio announced through the Angry Birds Twitter account that its new game hit that milestone "in less than three days." As of last year, the other three Angry Birds games had been downloaded half a million times.

We're sure the takeaway from all this for some of you will be "Huh, Angry Birds Space is out." And thus the cycle continues.

Love it or hate it, there is no avoiding Angry Birds. It's everywhere. Today, Angry Birds takes off for the final frontier in Angry Birds Space, a project that evidently has enough gravitational pull to get NASA itself involved.

And yet, when you get right down to it, it's just more Angry Birds with a few extra tricks up its sleeve -- not that there's anything wrong with that.

Rovio calls the slingshot an "art installation," but we see what's really going on here: interstellar travel and a public, press-heavy reveal of a monstrous weapon -- it's the space race all over again. This time, it's angry.

The game is the first true sequel to the Angry Birds phenomenon, which slingshotted onto hundreds of millions of devices across the globe and became a popular merchandising brand. It's all helped some formerly unknown little Finnish developer become valued in the billions off of one game (now, hopefully, two games).

Discouraging "digital disrespect," "cruelty" and "sexting," among other things, A Thin Line will incentivize active community involvement by rewarding positive social actions with an exclusive Angry Birds Space level.

It works like this: Once Angry Birds Space launches on March 22, players that post a "positive action" on MTV's Draw Your Line site will be given a hint that leads them to a secret "Golden Egg" level in Space. A "positive action" can be something as simple as changing your email password to protect your identity, or as complex as hosting an anti-abuse event/rally. The whole site works on the honor system, though, so most positive actions will probably be lies, concocted solely to obtain the game's secret level.

While we were talking to Rovio's Mighty Eagle Peter Vesterbacka, our good friends at Engadget were speaking with Rovio's Ville Heijari, who gave them a thorough run through of Angry Birds Space's new gravitational elements and horrendously difficult Danger Zone, the latter of which is exclusive to Samsung's massive 5.3 inch Galaxy Note smartphone.

We had a chance to play the game as well, albeit briefly, and we can report that not only are these birds still very upset, but that the pigs' space program is far, far more advanced than we had anticipated. We also had no idea there were so many planets in the solar system, but who are we to correct NASA?

"With all our games, we're going for all the screens: Smartphones, tablets, TVs, the web, so we really want to bring Space to all the screens as well," Vesterbacka told us during this week's SXSW Interactive festival in Austin, TX. "As always, we have limited resources, so we can only do iOS, Android, PC and Mac for the launch, but the other platforms will follow shortly after."

Vesterbacka also mentioned that Rovio's back catalog of bird/slingshot simulators are still coming to the 3DS, and that potential Vita versions are in Sony's court: "We'll have our games on the 3DS pretty soon. The Vita we haven't decided what to do about yet, but of course we want to be on all the screens, so let's see how the Vita does in the market. And of course, always when working with these console guys it's not that we can decide, it's really if Sony wants to have Angry Birds on Vita. It's more up to them than to us."

This teaser for Angry Birds Space not only has the cooperation of NASA, it was filmed on the International Space Station, featuring a live Angry Birds demonstration and physics lesson from astronaut Don Pettit.

All right, Rovio, that's pretty damn cool. As a nice bonus, there's gameplay footage at the end too, showing what appear to be weightless environments, many built around small circular planets.

Update: Rovio has sent along some screenshots and some more information. Angry Birds Space will feature 60 levels, new birds, new abilities, secret bonus levels and, of course, the gravity tricks seen in the trailer. The app will receive "regular free updates" and will feature in-app purchases.

Before Apollo 11 made history by successfully shuttling the first humans to the moon in 1969, the space program was in desperate financial condition and President John F. Kennedy had his grandparents mortgage their apartment for the money to keep NASA running. Er, no -- we're getting our stories mixed up here.

The bit about the grandparents mortgaging their home to keep a company running is actually the story behind Rovio, the creators of Angry Birds. Rovio was mainly backed by CEO Mikael Hed's dad and it hadn't produced a hit in years before Angry Birds; it was Hed's dad who proposed the family-mortgage plan.

"He told me that he wanted to mortgage my grandparents' flat so he could put some more money in the company to keep it afloat," Hed told All Things D. "That was pretty tough. I certainly did not want to be the person responsible for putting my grandparents on the street."

Hed doesn't have to worry about that now, as Angry Birds is a smash (HA!) hit and Rovio is valued at more than $6 billion. The next game from Rovio is Angry Birds Space, due out for iOS, Android, PC and Mac on March 22, and whose out-of-this-world adorable trailer you can view above.

In space, no one can hear you fling. Rovio's next title is indeed another Angry Birds game, because why not? Angry Birds Space is, presumably, Angry Birds in space.

The official site for Angry Birds Space suggests a March 22 launch. Outside of the teaser trailer above and the site, that's all we have to go on right now. But it's not like you needed more, right? We're pretty sure this'll just be more Angry Birds.
