Publisher DotEmu has released the remake on Mac, with optional and switchable HD graphics. The more platforms the better, because everyone should play it.

DotEmu also has an update on the way for the iOS version, adding support for controllers including the iCade. The touch controls aren't bad in this version, but buttons are usually preferable.

Here in The States, you may know the series as Out of this World.

The Android version will debut on March 16, and has many of the same features found in the delightful iOS port, including enhanced graphics, achievements (on OpenFeint) and remastered sound and effects.

As with the iOS release of Another World (known as Out of This World in North America), the Android version will feature both original and enhanced graphics and (obviously) touch controls.

The Android version of Another World 20th Anniversary Edition should be available in "a few months." Assuming it's as good as the iOS port, Android owners are in for a real treat.

My ability to complete Another World is entirely rooted in memory at this point. To wit, the only reason I can finish it is because I've finished it. That's how it goes every time I play a new incarnation, and I struggle to imagine my younger self peering through the game's opaque sequences without the aid of a previous life.

And sometimes (just between you and me) I think it's just a bad game. Another World (which, holy crap, is twenty years old now) has almost no guidance, no user interface, it murders the bewildered protagonist without warning and, if it's your first time, progress seems to require pristine visions of the future. Not many developers would make a game like this today. Even fewer would let you drown within the first ten seconds of gameplay.

That's got to be a record. Of course, unlike From Dust, this second game is a remake, but it's still exciting. Publisher BulkyPix announced today that the iOS update of Chahi's classic action-adventure game Another World (known in America as Out of This World) will be released on September 22 as a universal iPhone/iPad app, for $4.99 / 3,99€ / £2,99.

The new version includes remastered graphics, which can be toggled with a two-finger swipe. It also has the option to use "new intuitive touch controls" or a virtual D-pad -- we're desperately hoping at least one of them will work.

The iOS remake also adds new difficulty levels -- both easier and harder than the original -- and remastered sound. This all sounds great, but, once again, we're wary of those controls.

The beautifully remastered 15th Anniversary edition of Eric Chahi's cinematic side-scroller is available from GOG right now for $3.99 as part of a 24-hour sale. It'll return to its normal $10 price tomorrow at 6AM EDT.

This sale is a "GOG Gems" promotion -- the retailer offers a deep discount on a catalog item every third Wednesday, with the stated effort of introducing players to classics they may not have played yet. GOG refers to it as a "curated promo."

Oh, and while you've got your credit card out -- Star Control 1 and 2 are on GOG in a $6 bundle. If you've never played either, then you're missing out on not only a great strategic experience, but awesome spaceship combat as well.

It seems Another World nearly ended up being essentially another game.

According to Chahi, when he got to the point of shopping the game around to potential publishers, he initially approached (the now defunct) Virgin Interactive. The company proceeded to try and sway him to rework the game into a point-and-click adventure since "that's what was popular at the time."

Given the amount of work he'd already done on the game and the formidable task it would have been to re-tool all of it, Chahi decided to leave Another World alone. He went on to work with Delphine Software, which he described as being "very supportive" of the game as it was -- and how it will appear on iOS devices later this year.

The game won't hit iOS until later this year, but is evidently up-and-running according to Chahi himself. "The first prototype looks beautiful on iPad; they are doing a great job on it," he said in the announcement.

It's unclear whether the iOS version will be based on the 1991 original or the 2006 15th anniversary remastering (or both!), although DotEmu founder Xavier Liard promises his team will "put a lot of love and care to insure that the gamers get best user experience playing this game on iOS."

It's from Another World, the European name for the beloved Amiga game from Eric Chahi (later ported to PC, Mega Drive / Genesis, SNES, GBA, among other platforms). Released stateside as Out of This World, the game's 15th anniversary edition (featuring a remastered version of the game, as well as a "making of" video and some other neat bonuses) has just landed on GOG.com for $9.99.

As is the case with other titles on GOG, you're all set to run it in Windows XP or Windows Vista (both 32 and 64-bit). If you've yet to play Another World, well, what's wrong with you? Seriously, it's a great game (not to mention highly influential). Speaking of platform support, why hasn't this made its way to XBLA or PSN yet?
