X3F TV -- XBLA in Brief: Sam & Max Season 2, Axel & Pixel

We've got two click-em-ups up for grabs this week. One -- Sam & Max Beyond Time and Space -- is a buddy comedy fueled by crime, conversation and jokes, while the other -- Axel & Pixel -- is a puzzle solving affair rendered with bright colors and quirky animation. We're not sure what we did to deserve two point-and-click adventure games this week but, frankly, we're not going to look a gift horse in the mouth, especially considering these aren't gifts at all.

This Wednesday: Sam & Max & Axel & Pixel on XBLA

Xbox Live Arcade is heavy on the ampersands this week as both Axel & Pixel and the second season of Sam & Max (subtitled Beyond Time and Space, according to the ESRB) will be landing on Microsoft's download service. Both are games of the adventuring persuasion, requiring players to traverse the game world and solve puzzles, performing actions by pointing and / or clicking. Yes, you read that correctly, two adventure games in one week. It's like the 80s all over again.

Axel & Pixel will set you back 800

($10). Meanwhile, Sam & Max tops out at the most you should ever pay for a computer game. Also known as 1600

($20).

Axel & Pixel hit XBLA Oct. 14, trailer is wonderfully weird

2K Games' Axel & Pixel will be bringing its unique art style to XBLA on Wednesday, October 14. Announced back in August, along with the fabulously titled The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom, the point-and-click (point-and-button-press?) adventure appears to be a fanciful romp.

Along with the launch date, 2K has also released the first gameplay trailer, so we can finally see Axel the artist and his dog, Pixel, traversing the very weird game world. We're quite fond of it -- what do you think? Also, is it just us, or is Axel speaking Simlish?

2K bringing P.B. Winterbottom, Axel and Pixel to XBLA

It's likely been a while since you've thought of Odd Gentlemen's The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom, the extremely promising puzzle platformer that appeared on our radar during GDC 2008. Here's an update: We got the great news from 2K that it will bring the game exclusively to XBLA in early 2010.

In the same missive, 2K also confirmed the Czech-developed point-and-click adventure, Axel and Pixel (which looks similarly delightful in the below screens and the game's official site), as another XBLA exclusive. Luckily, the wait's not so brutal, as you'll only have to hold out until this fall to give it a try.

ESRB: 2K Games making point-and-click 'Axel and Pixel' for Xbox 360 [update]

An OFLC listing spotted by superannuation and a similar ESRB listing (pictured above) point to a new point-and-click adventure called "Axel and Pixel" being developed by ~~2K Czech, the studio behind~~ ~~Mafia II~~ [Update: 2K was kind enough to clarify that the game is being made by another Czech dev called Silver Wish Games.] According to the ESRB (which rates the game "E for Everyone"), players will "guide an artist and his dog through surreal and abstract environments." The game apparently presents environment puzzles that involve "redirecting a ray of light, throwing rocks at birds, and spraying water at a creature."

Unlike the OFLC listing, the ESRB entry indicates only the Xbox 360 as a platform, so it would seem that the game is exclusive to Microsoft's console (and a potential candidate for XBLA), at least for the moment.
