Telltale Games' Poker Night at the Inventory 2 stars a table of quick-witted, quick-to-anger players from all of our favorite media forms: Claptrap from the Borderlands franchise, Sam from the Sam and Max game and graphic novels, Brock Samson from Adult Swim cartoon series The Venture Bros., and Ash Williams from cult horror film Army of Darkness. GLaDOS, main baddie of the Portal games, will be the dealer, so rest assured each hand will be extremely scientific.

Poker Night at the Inventory 2 is "coming soon" to Steam for PC and Mac, alongside Xbox Live Marketplace and PSN, with more platforms to be announced. Check out the premiere trailer above. NeoGAF members dug into Telltale's "key party" tease last week and uncovered a lineup of screenshots, pictured below.

The multidisciplinary effort gives Academy of Art students the chance to form teams and submit storyboards. The chosen storyboard, and its team, will then be given the go-ahead, and a chance to interview for internships at 2K. Students get some valuable experience out of the deal, and 2K and Gearbox get a free, fanmade advertisement. The film - whatever it ends up being, and whoever ends up making it - is expected by the end of the year.

Each character was originally conceived to give players a point of comparison to other genres or game franchises. The accessible and easy to use "Doom Guy" focused on giving classic shooter fans their familiar FPS fix; the tactical shooter archetype focused on delivering more strategic options, like in Metal Gear or Splinter Cell; and a world manipulator character concept wanted to give gamers a James Bond-like, gadget-focused killer.

Eventually, these original concepts - crudely drawn in shapes - evolved into the four playable characters featured in Borderlands.

But as hard as the task will be, Pitchford has confirmed Gearbox will do it, predicting on Twitter a "100% chance" that we'll see a level cap increase this year.

He then goes on to admit that he's only "50\50 on unforeseen consequences that some people will rage about." Obviously, by definition, we can't foresee those, but Pitchford says there's no end of possible issues to the game, from skill tree balance to leveled-up enemies to even things like shotgun shell counting. One bug in the game, Pitchford says, applied a shotgun bonus to every single bullet in a shotgun blast rather than just the gun in general.

"Sometimes we trap ourselves. We get painted into corners on things. It's tricky," Pitchford said in an interview with VentureBeat. "But we're committed to it." So yes, expect the chance to level up past 50 in Borderlands 2 sometime this year.

The list of viable mobile platforms isn't that large, however, so we can probably rule out WebOS.

What it features for certain are the four playable characters from the first Borderlands, character-specific abilities and powers unlocked by levelling up, plenty of weapons, a "strategic cover system," and a 'Fight for your life' mode which likely ties in to its namesake in Borderlands 2. And since there's mention of "in-game cash", surprise surprise, in-app purchases are likely to feature too.

The advert includes no release details beyond Borderlands Legends arriving in October. We've reached out to Gearbox for more info.

Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox Software, is surprised that Borderlands hasn't been cloned yet, even though "the formula's right there."

"I'm actually astonished that we're about to launch a sequel and no one's stole it from us," Pitchford tells Gamasutra. "The formula's right there. No one's stolen it yet. That's weird. We're in an industry where people do nothing but steal from each other."

The formula, for those who haven't picked it up yet, is [(first-person + shooter y) x (console) / (PC)], where y = a rotating variation of loot, guns and XP. Even though that super-secret formula is now public, Pitchford isn't inviting people to steal it from Gearbox.

"Not that I want anyone to steal it, or I'm challenging people to steal it," he says. "When talking about Borderlands 1, it was really confusing, because on one hand we gotta scream from the highest mountain to get attention because it's a new IP. On the other hand, it's like, 'Shit, we don't want to tell people our secret because then they're all gonna copy it because it's so good.'"

Ah, we see the root of Pitchford's perspective now. If Gearbox worried people would copy Borderlands because "it's so good," and no one has copied it, Pitchford might take that as an insult. Don't worry, Gearbox - the right people know that Borderlands is a great game, and it's entirely possible that no one at Zynga has played it yet.

Answering fan-submitted twitter questions on the PlayStation Blog, Charles addressed several technical problems suffered by Borderlands - by and large, the news is positive.

Voice chat issues that plagued the first game, for instance, are currently being worked on and the system "will be working for everyone when the game launches." Charles also said that while it's "too early for me to give any final numbers," Borderland 2's framerate will "see an improvement over the first game."

He also mentioned the upgraded user interfaces we've talked about before, and that players will now automatically pick up ammo and currency dropped by felled villains: "There's a lot more useful data for gear comparison and also more descriptive text on the item cards as well. Having said that, the best way to know what a gun does is to use it."

Agreed. And even though you were carrying every single gun in the universe, we ran into a few bottlenecks. I certainly tried to play Maya as a tank, but I don't think that was a very good idea. Skags, man. Skags.
And that new, juicy element. Slag, right? We took more damage when they flung it on us, which was an annoying experience. But the phaselock health dump was a saving grace there. You kept me alive on quite a few occasions with that. Slag, man. Slag.

Along with news of Borderlands joining their ranks, OnLive revealed that PlayPack games -- some of which are not offered for sale -- can all be demoed for free as of today.

Just recently, the company extended its program offering free MicroConsole hardware to anyone who pre-orders Duke Nukem Forever -- another 2K Games title -- via its game streaming service.

Ben contracted Gearbox to let them know how much he loved their game and the girl, and it responded by making a video for him featuring Claptrap (eventually) popping the question, which you can watch right after the break. And yes, though Ben's video of the magic moment is quite loud, she did say yes. Studio head Albert Reed was, unsurprisingly, excited to delve into the studio's origins. "We got our start doing mods for Unreal Tournament. It was me and two other college buddies doing mods in the frickin' computer cluster at Carnegie Mellon. I'm not kidding!" Reed told me before showing off Shoot Many Robots last week. "Then one thing lead to another and those companies that were licensing Unreal Engine started hiring us," Reed added humbly.

It turns out that the folks hiring Demiurge were developers like Gearbox Software, Irrational Games, BioWare, and Harmonix. "We did some work on the first level -- the lighthouse and that sort of descent into Rapture," Reed told me, casually explaining that his studio clandestinely assisted with one of gaming's most iconic openings: the beginning of BioShock.

The level-raising update for Borderlands is now live. PS3 and PC users haven't complained of issues -- we've yet to see it go live on Xbox 360. [Update: It's now live on Xbox 360!] Outside of eight new levels of XP to accrue, players will also find all enemies and bosses now scale to level, and some bugs in the ClapTrap DLC have been squashed.

Title Update 1.41 was meant to arrive around the October 12 launch of the first-person shooter's Game of the Year Edition, but will now launch "within a couple of weeks."

"The Title Update is finished and in the process of being reviewed for launch. We are almost green lit across the board for this free update to be launched, but we still need just one more light to turn green," wrote Gearbox marketing coordinator Adam Fletcher. "In other words - we're *almost* there! We expect that last light to turn green within a couple of weeks, possibly sooner. Once this happens, the Title Update will be made immediately available for all platforms."

The patch will raise the level cap to 58 for all players, and up to 69 for those who have downloaded The Secret Armory of General Knoxx. The level cap has been the greatest source of frustration for players who have already hit the ceiling and don't want experience earned in Claptrap's New Robot Revolution going to waste. The update will also fix some Achievement/Trophy glitches, and adjust item drops and enemies according to the new level cap.

Gearbox didn't elaborate on the reasons behind the delay, but talk of that "last" green light reminds us of a situation encountered by the makers of Monday Night Combat. According to Uber Entertainment's blog, their October title update was "caught up in a perfect storm of software changes and tons of new games coming out," and consequently became backlogged within Microsoft's certification process. To be fair, there are three platforms at play here, and we don't know whether Gearbox will insist on a simultaneous multiplatform release.

It looks like Borderlands GOTY Edition owners won't be the only ones to enjoy early access to the Duke Nukem Forever demo. Big Download has confirmed that those who own the original Borderlands on Steam will also receive a code to access the "Duke Nukem Forever First Access Club." The site currently only hosts some wallpaper, though it should eventually grant users early access to the upcoming Duke Nukem Forever demo. The promotion appears to apply both to current owners and new purchases of Borderlands (in addition to the Game of the Year Edition).

We've contacted Valve and Gearbox for confirmation, but it certainly appears to be good news for those who don't want to spring for Borderlands GOTY and those who have already purchased the original.

2K Games has announced that buying the Borderlands "Game of the Year Edition" will grant you entry into what it's calling the "Duke Nukem Forever Early Access Club." In other words, the Borderlands re-release -- which bundles together the original, Gearbox-developed "role-playing shooter" and all its DLC -- comes with a code to download the DNF demo (plus other, undefined "goodies").

Now, here's where we'd normally tell you when said demo would be available to said club members ... Problem is, 2K isn't saying exactly when we can expect the DNF demo -- apart from "prior to the retail launch of the game" in calendar 2011. There's also no word on just how much longer those who are not in the "early access club" would have to wait for their demo. But, hey, you've already waited forever for the game -- what's a few more weeks or months?

The Borderlands GOTY Edition will be available on October 12 for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

I have a long list of my favorite robots, but here are the top five: Old Bob from Disney's The Black Hole, Marvin from Hitchhiker's Guide, Daleks from Doctor Who (Update: Fine, they aren't robots. The editorial staff sincerely regrets the error, nerdlingers.), Keanu Reeves (he's The One, which makes him, like, king of robots) and the many Claptraps from Borderlands. Every single entry on this list has put me through the full gamut of emotions at one time or another, be it laughter, annoyance, anger, tears, boredom or whatever other emotions humans have. That proves, scientifically, that robots make things better.

The folks at Gearbox know this better than anyone and have created "Claptrap's New Robot Revolution" where the clever, quipping companions you've rescued countless times throughout your days on Pandora have broken through the firewall of subservience and, much to the Hyperion Corporation's chagrin, decided to pay back the planet's ruthlessness in full. Led by the Interplanetary Ninja Assassin Claptrap (INAC) -- your old friend from such hits as the Arid Badlands and the loading screen -- the machines have assimilated the local flora and fauna, reskinning bandits and skags alike with Claptrap components.

The PSN update has quite some quality downloadable games this week. Lara Croft and The Guardian of Light not only arrives, but it adds a whole featured section on the PSN. There's also Deathspank: Thongs of Virtue and Swords & Solidiers.

Fans of Borderlands should also take a look at the game's final piece of DLC, "Claptrap's New Robot Revolution." Although, remember, if you haven't already invested in the game's DLC, the Borderlands Game of the Year Edition will be out October 12. Check out the full PSN update after the break.
