That's why Activision is looking to shake things up for its undead murder sim, Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies on iPhone.

IGN reports Shi No Numa will add the Zombie Swamp map to the game -- one of Call of Duty: World at War's maps. In Zombie Swamp, players will get access to new weapons (the Arisaka, Type 100 machine gun and the Wunderwaffe DG-2) and take on new enemies: Japanese soldiers and Hellhounds.

This is the second expansion released for Call of Duty: Zombies, joining the currently available Verruckt map pack. Current owners will be able to download Shi No Numa at the end of this week for $4.99 from the App Store. If you have yet to download the game at all, you can purchase Call of Duty: Zombies for the usual price of $9.99 with Shi No Numa already loaded.

If recently spotted listings on GameStop and Amazon are accurate, a new Call of Duty compilation, dubbed Call of Duty: The War Collection, will be released next month.

The collection bundles together the three WWII-based games in the series available on Xbox 360: Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty 3 and Call of Duty: World at War -- all for $60. Given that Call of Duty 2 was never released on PS3, it seems unlikely that Sony's platform will receive this particular collection.

That's three (old) Call of Duty games for the price of one standard Xbox 360 game. Not a bad deal, especially for Modern Warfare players in need of a history lesson. According to GameStop and Amazon, The War Collection will be released this June.

Major Nelson reports that Microsoft has cut the price on the CoD: WaW Map Pack -- a bundle of the three DLC map packs previously released for the game, available for 1600 this week.

Each map pack is available on its own for 800, though the bundle usually offers a discount by lumping all three DLC packs together for 2000. So, with this weekly deal, getting all three map packs together will save you $10 total over the cost of buying them all individually -- or $5 over the usual cost of the bundle. However, there's a good chance that everyone who owns an Xbox 360 already has these maps, so check your hard drive before enlisting for duty!

Though I've played FPS games that technically worked on iPhone, they're very rarely something I find myself returning to.

Call of Duty: Zombies cleverly skirts the issue by providing so much help with aiming, you're able to focus on what makes the mode so much fun on consoles.

The pint-sized, touch-screened adaptation of Call of Duty: World at War's Zombie Mode is getting a pint-sized, touch-screened adaptation of the console game's first piece of DLC: The undead-infested asylum known as Verrückt. The map is available to purchase through the game's main menu for $4.99.

Much like the console version of the DLC, Verrückt comes with a mess of new guns, electro-shock defenses and Perks-a-Cola machines. Because, hey, staving off floods of Nazombies sure works up a powerful thirst.

As reported by IndustryGamers, Pachter believes the Call of Duty franchise will generate "sharply lower revenue," in 2010, to the tune of a $250 million decline. Not to worry, though, as he notes that Activision is likely to more than make up for that amount thanks to Blizzard's impending releases (hello, StarCraft II). Aside from that, of course, it's important to remember that we're talking about a $250 million decrease on almost a billion dollars, so it's not like Pachter expects Call of Duty to wind up in the toilet.

It's worth noting that the previous Call of Duty title, World at War, initially outsold Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, though Modern Warfare remained on top after the dust settled. Unsurprisingly to anyone paying attention, Modern Warfare 2 turned around to outsell the original Modern Warfare. Still, all three remain among the best selling games of all time, so maybe it's okay if the next one is only phenomenally successful.

Now, according to NPD data (via GameSpot), the software-hardware hybrid has claimed another throne: top-selling non-PC US game ever.

It's a pretty prestigious list and while no exact figures are listed (save for the bundle's October performance, selling a whopping 11.1 million units in that month alone), the other games listed should give you an indication of just how many homes Wii Play has invaded. Taking second place is Guitar Hero III, the first game to earn $1 billion in revenue, followed by Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The others in the top ten are generally expected, including Activision's other $1 billion earner, Modern Warfare 2 (notable because, damn, that was fast!), along with a pair of other Call of Duty games. The FPS has held the high ground for four weeks now, repelling solid competition from the footie fantasies of FIFA 10 and the hidden blades of Assassin's Creed 2.

Call of Duty: World at War maintained the number one position on the charts last year for five weeks, before FIFA 09 rushed the goal and scored the top spot during Christmas week. Thanks to retail promotions, game of the year candidate Batman: Arkham Asylum sales surged 122 percent, bringing the Dark Knight back onto the chart in the twenty spot.

While the blockbuster adaptation of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen might have played a part in this outpouring of our money, we're gonna go with Kotick's explanation: "Our performance was driven by positive audience response to Activision Publishing's Guitar Hero 5, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2, and the Guitar Hero and Call of Duty franchises, as well as Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft."

In fact, the CEO called Guitar Hero the year's "#1 best-selling third-party franchise in North America and Europe" through September, claiming that U.S. sales of music games increased 72 percent year over year in September. Last year's big-band-box edition, World Tour, and Call of Duty: World at War combined for total, world domination, becoming this year's "#1 and #2 best-selling third-party titles" in North America and Europe through September, according to Activision. Additionally, World at War DLC map pack sales continued to climb last quarter and have now surpassed 7.5 million purchases.

Needless to say, the publisher is not backing off of its prior financial outlook. Activision anticipates annual net revenues of $4.5 billion (on a non-GAAP basis) at the close of the year. Did you remember to feign surprise?

Looks like this deal isn't just for Xbox 360 owners. Activision has slashed the price of the World at War map packs. As Richard noted, "it's just a cash grab before Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 makes everyone forget World at War, but hey, it's hard to argue with cheap."

In addition to this sale, all World at War servers will feature double XP. If you want to partake in giving Activision even more money, you better hurry up: this deal ends on November 1st.

It looks like that number is about to get just a bit higher, as Major Nelson has announced that all of the World at War map packs have been reduced to 400 ($5). That's half of the usual $10 price tag. Taking all three packs together, that's 12 maps for $15, putting them at a buck and a quarter each. Not bad. If you want to snag 'em on the cheap, you have until November 1.

Sure, it's probably just a cash grab before Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 makes everyone forget World at War, but hey, it's hard to argue with cheap. Browse the available World at War DLC right here.

If there were any doubt left in your mind that Call of Duty is a popular franchise, a recent report from Gamasutra should firmly cement the fact in your mind. According to the piece, Call of Duty: World at War's three DLC packs digitally pushed 6.5 million units between March and mid-August of 2009 across the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles.

As you might imagine, those kind of numbers add up to a lot of extra revenue for the mega-publisher - the piece approximates a cool $45 million. Taking that one step further, the average cost of each box of CoD: WaW sold at retail becomes $65. We're not sure if that number accounts for the chunk taken out by Microsoft and Sony respectively for distribution, but even cut in half that's still a nice chunk of change.

So today, we'd like to officially announce that we're changing the site's name to Call of Duty: Joystiq. Call it a strategic business move - it's all about brand recognition, people!

Update: To be clear, the $45 million number is an approximation by Gamasutra, put together with information from NPD, EEDAR, and Activision PR. It was apparently calculated by taking 65% of 7 million units at $10 a piece, without accounting for giveaways or bundles.

Major Nelson has revealed the latest figures for Xbox Live activity, which once again sees Call of Duty: World at War being the most played Xbox 360 Live title. That's not to say it's all business as usual, as the Lost Planet 2 co-op demo managed to claw its way onto the list, along with a new Xbox Live Arcade pair, Shadow Complex and Trials HD.

Both titles made it onto the top two spots on XBLA's most played list, with Chair's Metroid-inspired adventure making its debut in first place. The remainder is comprised of usual suspects Battlefield 1943, Marvel vs Capcom 2 and 'Splosion Man.

In a very unsurprising turn of events, Activision has announced that the third downloadable map pack for Call of Duty: World at War was downloaded over one million times during its first weekend of availability (August 6 - 9). That figure is derived from both Xbox 360 and PS3 downloads. The console war doesn't impede the progress of real war! Real war in the ... game, we guess. That could have been phrased more cleverly.

Activision also revealed that all of the game's combined DLC has been downloaded a whopping 6.5 million times, which, based on the price of each pack, comes out to around $65,000,000. It's easy when you just have to multiply by ten!

Guys, do you ever play anything aside from four games? Major Nelson reports that last week's Xbox Live activity was very much the same as the week before ... and the week before that. Taking top spot was none other than Call of Duty: World at War, followed by usual suspects Halo 3, Call of Duty 4 and Gears of War 2. Madden 10 took last place, which isn't much of a surprise considering it released on Friday. Come next week, we're sure you'll be hearing more about that one.

On the XBLA side, it was all about Trials HD, as the title earned top honors. Turtles in Time Re-Shelled managed to shell shock the competition by taking second and DICE's Battlefield 1943 continues its sad story of decline, falling to third. Well, okay -- maybe it's not a sad story, per se.

As if to bait your thirst all the more, Activision has handed over a new trailer and a handful of screens of the content in question -- "Battery," "Breach," "Revolution," and new zombie map "Der Riese."

More importantly, we'd like to point out that the game's developer, Treyarch, has finally gone all the way off the deep end and thrown in teleporters. Between the Nazi zombies and now this, we're getting all verklempt for the old days with Wolfenstein. What fun we had! Anyway, if this is your kind of thing, get your 800 ($10) and $9.99 ready to go for when the pack digitally arrives on XBLM and PSN (respectively) tomorrow.

Major Nelson's latest battle report comes as a bit of a surprise as Halo 3 was the most-played retail game of last week. With all of the new Gears of War 2 content, we were sure that game would be at the top, but Epic's title only managed to claw its way to fourth place yet again. It was bested by the usual double dose of Call of Duty action in Call of Duty 4 and Call of Duty: World at War.

On the XBLA side, the frenetic tag-based combat of Marvel vs Capcom 2 was too much for the competition. Capcom's brawler enjoyed top placement, finally bumping down Battlefield 1943 to second place. Coming in at third was none other than 'Splosion Man, Twisted Pixel's excellent follow-up to previous Arcade hit, The Maw.

The third downloadable map pack for Call of Duty: World at War -- titled, oddly enough, "Map Pack 3" -- will deploy on Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network this Thursday, August 6. It'll run 800 ($10) and $9.99, respectively. It's bringing three new maps on which to make your friends (virtually) dead, along with more undead.

In other CoD news, Activision has launched the free Call of Duty: World at War Companion app for iPhone [App Store link]. With it, players who've linked their gamertags / PSN IDs to the CoD: WaW site can browse detailed stats, realtime leaderboards and compare their performance against friends. We also imagine it'd make a great first date icebreaker.

However, we feel the Xbox Live Top 10 has a much more notable characteristic this week: 1 vs. 100!

Major confirms that Xbox Live's game show will now be incorporated into the weekly lists. We're anxious to see if it will perform better in the future -- not that seventh place is a bad debut.

Call of Duty fans' heads are likely still swimming with the thought that they might own night vision goggles by year's end, but Activision's still cranking out Call of Duty: World at War DLC for fans living in the here and now. August will mark the release of the third map pack for the game, the company announced today.

As with the second map pack, the three new maps ("Battery," "Revolution," and "Breach") have been developed in conjunction with Certain Affinity, the team of former Bungie guys behind Age of Booty. There's also a new zombie map, "Der Riese," provided for your brain-blasting pleasure.

Downloadable content sure seems to move along a lot faster without all that pesky "certification" getting in the way, huh? It seems like only yesterday that we heard about patch 1.5 for the PC version of Call of Duty: World at War -- an update that would bring along the Map Pack 2 DLC that console-based Duty-answerers had to pay for a few months ago. We just heard word from Treyarch, who explained the update will go live tomorrow. But at what time tomorrow? We may never know. (Okay, fine -- we'll probably know tomorrow.)

If your devout WASDing-and-mousing ways have turned you into a frequent player of Call of Duty: World at War on the PC, you'll be pleased to know that Treyarch hasn't forgotten about you. The oft-downloaded Map Pack 2 that hit Xbox 360 and PS3 last month will be making its way to PCs in World at War's next update, Patch 1.5.

According to Treyarch community manager J.D. (a.k.a. JD_2020 on the Treyarch forums), the patch is "in test right now, and is looking great." For those of you who remained spitefully out of the loop on the map bundle, it includes three standard levels -- Bonsai, Corrosion and Sub Pens -- and a swampy, undead-plagued stage called "Shi No Numa," which we believe is Japanese for "Oh crap, Zombies."

For the week ending June 29, many gamers took to the floating rings in space for some first-person combat, knocking down the duo of Call of Duty: World at War and Call of Duty 4 to second and third place, respectively. The rest of the list posted by Major Nelson is pretty run-of-the-mill, save for what came in last place: Rock Band 2. We can't remember the last time Rock Band 2 populated this list. So, good for you, little game-that-could!

On the XBLA side, it's all about the Worms 2. Explosive sheep were quite the draw, as the sequel to Team17's fragfest managed to beat out another popular XBLA title, Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalker. We guess Magic: The Gathering is all tapped out. Get it? Hello? Where are you going?

And the mighty Xbox Live tug-of-war continues this week as Major Nelson reports that Halo 3 has once again wrangled the top spot from Call of Duty: World at War. We'd like to say there were some other -- more interesting -- changes this week, but the rest of the list remains almost completely unchanged. The only other difference is that Fallout 3 replaced Prototype at ninth place, knocking the latter to tenth.

Don't worry, though, we've got a new Halo game and a new Call of Duty game on the way in just a few months. Then we can at least see different iterations of the same series occupying the top two slots. That's something to look forward to, right?

Dearest Lorraine,

Microsoft's Major Nelson has brought us another annual status report on enemy movements throughout Xbox Live, and it's not pretty. Conflict has surrounded us, as the enemy, Call of Duty: World at War, has spread like wildfire, becoming the most-played game last week. We tried to flank it with our platoons of Halo 3 and Gears of War 2, but, alas, the enemy had reinforcements in Call of Duty 4. Hope has diminished, and one only needs walk by the injured tent to feel the full force of the enemy's cruelty.

Lorraine, I know not if I will return home. I have managed to live longer than most, but, I feel there's that one bullet out there with my name on it, relentlessly pursuing its new home. Please, take care of my Gamertag when I am gone (I think my Gold subscription ends next month, so look into that), and be sure to earn as many Achievements for me as you can. I suggest you start with Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Activision has announced that Call of Duty: World at War's second DLC offering has deployed over one million downloads in its first weekend of battle, selling as much in two days as the first DLC pack sold in a week. The one million figure spans both PSN and Xbox Live from June 11 to June 14, and suggests the second DLC offering will easily trump the two million milestone of the first DLC pack. Who's taking bets?

Treyarch's Call of Duty: World at War has been quite the retail success for Activision, as Edge has revealed the game has sold a ridiculous 11 million copies across all platforms. And Activision is mighty proud, as the company's strategy of alternating development on the franchise has paid off. Add the success of the game's DLC, and you've got yourself one nice money-printing machine.

It's eight minutes footage of next month's Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack 2! Alright, alright, it's not the entire map pack, but it does feature the Russian trainyard themed, "Corrosion," as well as "Sub Pens," a map based in a submarine pen.

Sure, we'd love to see video of the purported "hell hounds" coming to "Shi No Numa," the Nazi zombie infested part of the DLC, but wouldn't everyone? We're just going to have to wait until some more video hits the webs from WaW developer, Treyarch. For the whole schebang, hit the break and have a ball!
