Monster Hunter Tri has already sucked away over a million hours of gameplay time from users, according to stats from the Nintendo Channel. In just 63 days from release, the monster hunting epic stole a full million hours from users who reported logging in to the game over 330,000 times. The high number isn't necessarily a record breaker (Super Smash Bros. has garnered 100 times that, and players have spent 17 billion hours on Xbox Live), but where Monster Hunter Tri stands out is the per player duration: players of the game have spent an average of 52 hours in the game so far.

By comparison, Super Mario Galaxy 2 has eaten up 1.8 million hours of free time over 710k times, but the average time played there is about 20 hours -- more players, less time each. There are only four games ahead of Monster Hunter Tri in terms of played-per-person time, and all of them have been out for much longer. In other words, monsters aren't the only thing being hunted in this game -- free time had better watch its back as well.
Monster Hunter Tri has occupied over 50 hours per player on average originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Jul 2010 00:00:00 EST. After a successful partnership on XBLA/PSN release Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (breath), Udon Entertainment and Capcom are once again working together, though this time the Street Fighter comic book artists are adding endings to upcoming Wii fighter Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars. Despite Udon's pedigree, the announcement post remains overwhelmingly humble, saying, "Everyone at Udon is very proud to have contributed to such an epic piece of video game and anime history." We haven't gotten our hands on any screens of the endings just yet, but we'll be sure to give you a gander as soon as we do.

Update: Capcom's Twitter feed got a bit more informationey later on this evening, showing off the Capcom suite at CES, complete with "new hotness from Mad Catz." Though the shot is significantly more blurry, it certainly seems to indicate a new arcade stick coming from Mad Catz for Super Street Fighter IV.

Considering the Consumer Electronics Show is happening right this minute in Las Vegas, it's no surprise that Capcom's Twitter account is busy teasing pictures of yet-to-be-revealed arcade sticks for the upcoming sorta-sequel Super Street Fighter IV. As you can see in the image above, an inky outline of Ryu overlooks a more colorful button set than the previous game's stick. Additionally, the shape of the controller's box certainly bears a striking resemblance to the Street Fighter IV Tournament Edition joysticks from Mad Catz that were in such short supply last year. We've followed up with Capcom but were told there's no official comment just yet.

Capcom teases Super version of SFIV Tournament Edition joystick [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Jan 2010 22:15:00 EST. If you fancy yourself a would-be jetpacker, know that Capcom Unity is holding an event to show off Dark Void to San Franciscans this Monday, October 12. Before you get all giddy and start causing a scene in your cubicle/classroom/mom's basement, you'll need to do a few things:

Make sure you can clear your schedule from 2pm - 7:30pmish on Monday, October 12 and you can get yourself to the downtown San Francisco area

Be at least 21 years old and have a valid I.D.

Hit up this link and drop a note stating why you should be chosen

And that's pretty much it. Best of luck to those of you trying to attend!
Secret Dark Void event going down this Monday, Oct. 12 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 Oct 2009 21:40:00 EST. In an effort to reach out to its fans in the Western European version of CAPTIVATE08's setting, Capcom announced details (via Capcom-Unity) this week about its "totally not a gamer's day" event, unironically titled CAPTIVATE09. Taking place in Monte Carlo, Monaco, the company says it's announcing "new games" at the event (emphasis on the "s" at the end there) -- an especially interesting statement to make considering Capcom's Chris Kramer said this week on the Giant Bombcast, "We are announcing at least two titles at E3." How many games are in development at Capcom right now that we don't know about?!

Other items of note are new looks at Spyborgs (the "actually a game" game for Wii) and Resident Evil The Darkside Chronicles. If you're one of the lucky few already chosen from the Capcommunity (see what we did there?) to attend, make sure to bring your jewel-encrusted Wiimote and blood-spattered Tricell messenger bag, so you don't look out of place. Starting to feel like your North American Wii will never get a chance to spin Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Cross Generation of Heroes? Capcom says, "keep hope alive!"

Capcom's Seth "S-Kill" Killian recently posted footage (found after the break) of a Ranking Battle final at Simi Valley's Denjin Arcade on the Unity blog, telling fans that the company is still looking for a way to bring the mixed-character fighter to North American shores. The post reaffirms comments made earlier this month by Capcom's bizdev and strategic planning VP, Christian Svensson, who said Capcom was "actively working" to get the game Stateside. However, nothing is set in stone and it still may never happen. So, who's starting the online petition?

Continue reading Capcom still working on US release of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom

Capcom still working on US release of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 31 Mar 2009 23:45:00 EST. Capcom's Unity blog posted a preview of the new comic based on the Resident Evil universe as well as an interview with Ricardo Sanchez, writer of the upcoming six-part series. According to Sanchez, the series takes place around the same time as (and possibly before) the events of Resident Evil 5, introducing readers to a pair of new characters: BSAA rookie Mina Gere and weathered BSAA vet, Holiday Sugarman.

Holiday... Sugarman. That's a name. That name... exists.

The story begins aboard an international space station that Gere is sent to investigate following reports of T-Virus research. The simple investigation quickly goes south when the rookie finds herself alone in space with an infected crew (which, kind of sounds familiar). Sugarman -- still reeling from the loss of his family in a bio-weapon incident -- starts his adventure in <strike>Willy Wonka's Factory</strike> the fictional country of Grezbekistan (which Sanchez says would be found around Afghanistan or Turkey, part of the world). Eventually the story will bring the pair to South America where they will "encounter a variety of T-Virus and G-Virus infected monsters, some with new twists, that are part of the Resident Evil universe," Sanchez says.

Unfortunately, Sanchez does not detail if readers will be able to walk (or run) while they enjoy the comic. We suspect they won't. The first issue of Resident Evil will hit stores this May.
Capcom Unity previews new Resident Evil comic mini-series originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 29 Mar 2009 12:30:00 EST. In case you aren't intimately familiar with the minutiae of the credit card world, Defend Your Dollars laid out, in plain language, the fees associated with the prepaid cash card (which is not a credit card, nor is it a debit card).

Just a few examples: You have to pay $10 to buy the thing, followed by $4.95 monthly. You put another $4.95 down as a fee when you want to reload the card. And unless you specify a "signature-based debit transaction" at retailers, you're charged a quarter for a PIN-based transaction. You also pay for balance inquiries, ATM transactions, overdrafts (to the tune of whatever you spent plus ten dollars), customer service calls, bill payment by check (seriously), and not using your card for 90 days.

This isn't unique to the Capcom cards: this is just how it is for prepaid cash cards. You pay a lot for the privilege of having a card. It's your call whether you love Bionic Commando's Nathan Spencer enough to put up with this business.

[Via The Consumerist -- thanks Don!]
Capcom Visa cards full of hidden charges (just like Guile) originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 06 Mar 2009 13:02:00 EST.
Capcom has announced its own branded, pre-paid Visa cards, the first run of which will feature artwork from Street Fighter IV, Resident Evil 5 and Bionic Commando. The Capcom Unity Card will be available online beginning February 17 -- SFIV's launch date, we're guessing not concidentally -- and offer some interesting rewards for their use.

The most immediate benefit will be a 15% discount off purchases made using the Unity card on Capcom's online store. Every dollar added to these "rechargeable" cards will also grant their holders five Capcom Unity Points, which the company says "can be used in a number of different ways" at a revamped Capcom Unity website.

Auctions and raffles are already planned, with Capcom developing "a larger suite of rewards ... above and beyond the standard incentives." According to the announcement, these will range from "exclusive access" to beta programs for upcoming games to the possibility of "being written into a Capcom game or comic book" and -- get this -- potentially landing a spot as an extra in a movie based on Capcom properties. Additional card designs are also in the works (we know: "Where's my Mega Man?").

Most intriguing of all, card holders will be able to send money to other folk's Capcom Unity cards online. We think the timeline will go something like this: February 17, Capcom Unity card launches; February 18, the first underground SFIV fight betting network using the Unity card is formed.

Isn't it just like the internet to propagate unsubstantiated rumors. The latest such rumor surrounding the upcoming survival <strike>horror</strike> shooter Resident Evil 5 may have given the game some free publicity, but Capcom has decided that enough is enough. It's squashing the rumor once and for all in its latest community blog post. The "action" controls will not allow you to move and shoot simultaneously. Chris Redfield's testosterone-filled body makes multitasking an impossibility.

"While RE5 is very action-heavy, the base RE game design mechanic of holding fast while shooting remains," says the Capcom blog. Newcomers to the series may need to make some "mental readjustments," but the controls have remained this way to establish a sense of risk and danger while in combat. The new controls will instead grant "more natural motion to the second analog stick on your 360 or PS3 controller," allowing you to strafe. We're sure there are strong advocates for both sides of the argument amongst Resident Evil 5's audience. Maybe not Chris Redfield strong ... but strong.
Confirmed: no run-and-gun in Resident Evil 5. Wondering what's taking Monster Hunter so long to make its way from Japan to other countries? The multi-million selling Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G perhaps won't sell as many copies elsewhere, but it'd be easy money for Capcom to take advantage of. Well, the announcement of a new Infrastructure mode for the game (enabled via PS3) has us thinking the game is finally getting prepared for a wide release around the world.

A survey was released on the Capcom-Unity site, one which specifically mentions the Link functionality. Link would allow players "to play with other players across the world via a PS3 connected to the internet." Sounds just like the newly announced feature, no?

And the title of the game featured in the survey? Monster Hunter Unite. While Capcom reps refuse to comment on Monster Hunter Unite at the time, we think our guess that it's a localized version of 2G is a solid one -- guess we'll have to wait to find out more.

[Thanks, Yuri!]
Monster Hunter Unite could be name of localized 2G originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 02 Sep 2008 13:15:00 EST. Have you ever wanted to star in a video game? Well, this may not be stardom, but it's something. You can become an avatar in the background of the upcoming Street Fighter IV. Capcom-Unity, the cleverly named official Capcom blog, is offering a number of fans to have digital clones of their likenesses injected into the console versions of the fighting game. Seth "S-KILL" Killian of Capcom just shot us some news fireball-style that should send Street Fighter fans into a frenzy. Capcom-Unity, the official Capcom community blog, is offering a yet-to-be-determined number of fans a chance to have their likenesses included in the console version of Street Fighter IV. Specifically, the game's producer, Yoshinori Ono, has agreed to pop fans' faces onto background characters. For real.

Capcom is asking anyone who'd like to be considered to send in "pictures, video, dissertations, limericks, daguerreotypes, singing telegrams" by next Wednesday, June 18. So, if you want your short at immortality - at least in a "video game extra" form - you'd better get on it. Full details, including the email address for submissions can be found in Seth's blog post.

[Thanks, Seth!]
Capcom to put fans' faces in Street Fighter IV originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Jun 2008 21:00:00 EST.
