We're like a somewhat creepier, less linguistic Babel Fish. The one thing your brain has been demanding is an updated version of 2002's Command & Conquer: Renegade.

We'd like to bring to your attention Renengade X: Black Dawn, a "spiritual successor" created by fans at Totem Arts. Tomorrow, the group will release the full single-player "mini-campaign," which was built in the Unreal Development Kit, and later Totem Arts plans to release a new multiplayer installment using the UDK.

In its current form, Renegade X is an updated version of the original game's multiplayer, made in Unreal Tournament 3, and has been playable for some time. If you want to partake, you'll need to own a copy of Unreal Tournament 3 with the latest updates.

Or, you know, just wait a day.

[Thanks, ssjChris!]
C&C: Renegade remake Renegade X: Black Dawn deploys tomorrow originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 27 Jan 2012 22:00:00 EST. Either the next Command and Conquer title is called Alliances, or EA is in the process of establishing a proposal for the U.N. Security Council's consideration. We're banking on the former -- EA has registered a slew of domain names for Command and Conquer Alliances, including for Red Alert, Generals and Tiberium Alliances. EA registered all of these on Dec. 2, so here's a list of the domains you could have purchased on Dec. 1 to get rich off of EA as it bought them back:
In August, EA brass restructured the company putting Peter Moore in the role of COO and converting the illustrious BioWare brand from developer to "label," joining the ranks of EA Games (DICE, Visceral, Criterion, EA Partners, etc.), EA Sports (Madden, FIFA, Fight Night) and EA Play (Maxis, The Sims, MySims). With this new understanding of "BioWare" we bring you the latest scuttlebutt from internet scuttlebutter Superannuation, who spotted a LinkedIn resume (since edited) that described the Marina del Rey-based Victory Games as a BioWare studio.

Victory Games, you might recall, is a new "strategy studio" announced by EA last February, as an offshoot of its EA Los Angeles location. Like Danger Close and Visceral Games, Victory is more of a "rebranding" than an entirely new studio; Victory was set up as the EALA shop handling all things Command & Conquer, much like Danger Close was established to handle all things Medal of Honor.

Now, onto the new "BioWare" game being revealed on December 10 at the Spike Video Game Awards. With the latest teaser promising "a new direction, a new game, from a new BioWare studio," that sounds vague enough to contain a new Command & Conquer installment. New direction? That sounds like Victory's mandate for the franchise. New game? Well, yeah. A new BioWare studio? We're not sure what makes Victory a BioWare studio (per the above LinkedIn resume) instead of an EA Games studio, but there you have it. We'll find out on the 10th!
New game from new BioWare studio could be Command & Conquer by Victory Games originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 23 Nov 2011 11:30:00 EST.
Remember Command & Conquer: Renegade, the first-person shooter set in the C&C universe that came out back in 2002? One group of fans apparently remembers it so fondly that they're remaking the title as a game called Renegade X, going so far as to not only recreate settings and levels from the title in a more modern graphics engine, but also create new content for the mix of real-time strategy and FPS action gameplay.

The fanmade game actually looks like it's coming along well, and there's a version available for download right now (though it requires an updated copy of Unreal Tournament 3 to play). The full final game won't be out until "when its [sic] done" according to the video above, but hopefully that will be right on schedule. We wouldn't want these guys to have to remake the infamous "Havoc takes on Westwood" video, too, for releasing as late as the original team.

Now that Victory Games and a new Command and Conquer are official, it's time to be reminded of the series' decline over the years. Good thing Steam is there with deep discounts this weekend on the freefalling franchise.

If you're looking for "serious" RTSing, check out Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars ($7.50). If you'd prefer something a little bit more quirky, go for Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 ($5). What about Command & Conquer 4? No such thing exists, sorry. But if it did, it would cost $5 right now. Just saying.
Command & Conquer games 75% off on Steam this weekend originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 25 Feb 2011 22:00:00 EST. Oops! After a premature publication of the new commandandconquer.com earlier this week, which spoiled the whole surprise, EA's finally ready to re-reveal the news that its created a new studio - following in the wake of studio rebrandings like Visceral Games and Danger Close - to handle all things Command & Conquer. Victory has offices in Los Angeles - home of EALA, the former studio brand responsible for C&C, following the acquisition of Westwood - Austin, and Shanghai and is led by former Trion CCO Jon Van Caneghem.

"Victory Games was created to be the focal point for the creation of strategy games for the Games Label at EA," Caneghem said. "Our current focus is making a AAA Command & Conquer game, which I am very excited to be working on." While Caneghem didn't have much more to add regarding that game - it's "for the PC" but Victory's "not yet at a stage where [it] can go into any details" - he did say that the studio's mandate "the future of Command & Conquer" and that this work on this first game will help "create a stable base for future development." If you're a C&C fan, it sounds like EA's not through with the franchise by a long shot.
Command & Conquer site is back up, Victory Games confirmed as new dev originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 24 Feb 2011 17:35:00 EST. Electronic Arts apparently flipped the switch on a new Command and Conquer website today before intended, deciding shortly after that it wasn't too keen on sharing it with the world. Rock Paper Shotgun spotted the site, which announced the project is being developed by EA's newly dubbed Victory Games, a collaboration between three studios in Los Angeles, Texas and Shanghai.

Victory Games will apparently be headed by Jon Van Caneghem, an executive who "transitioned out" of his role as Trion World Networks president and chief creative officer in April of 2009. According to RPS, before the information was pulled, there was an "interview" with Caneghem on the site that noted the new title was for PC and that a formal announcement was coming later this year. We'll likely get more details when EA commands the web team to conquer the publish button.
Rumor: New Command & Conquer site goes live, disappears originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 21 Feb 2011 22:15:00 EST. Next time out, the Command & Conquer franchise will be more Visceral. Although the game, according to EA's Visceral Games label GM Nick Earl, is still "pretty far out," it will be part of the publisher's strategy to expand the Visceral studio as a brand. Earl detailed the multi-studio Visceral branding in a recent interview with Gamasutra, which would explain why the EA Redwood Shores studio that became Visceral has been working on several projects.

The Visceral label is a collaboration of EA in the States, the "art-focused" Shanghai studio, EA Montreal and a team in Melbourne, Australia. Earl said, "We're not outsourcing or insourcing -- we really look at it as collaborative development, where everyone is on equal playing ground." Dead Space 2 will be an indication of the result achieved through this new Visceral process.
Next Command and Conquer in production under Visceral label originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 18 Oct 2010 13:00:00 EST. A new company debuting at GDC 2010, Supergiant Games is largely comprised of ex-EA LA members -- you know, the guys and gals who made those Command & Conquer games you like so much. The new studio's project is something for "digital platforms," destined for a 2011 release. Sadly, there's no more info to go on right now.

The studio is on-hand at GDC with said title, so we've contacted them to try and schedule a visit.
With all of the furor around the StarCraft 2 beta going on this week, you might actually have forgotten that there are actually two major, big-budget RTS sequels due out in 2010. Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight is arriving in just a few weeks on March 16, and, to remind you of that fact, here are a few of the game's developers telling you about how they balanced the multiplayer component. The main feature is the new class choices -- whenever you start up a map, you choose whether you want to play as offense, defense or support, and your teammates can make the same choice, allowing each of you to choose to run your own units entirely, with their own strengths and weaknesses.

There's also some information at the end about the co-op campaign, which will also let you use the complimentary classes to split up the fight against enemies and follow objectives that much more quickly with a friend. Sure, your Marines and your Zerglings and your Zealots are fun to play with, but it looks like C&C4 is ordering up some new ways to play one of the older genres in PC gaming.
Based on the precedent set by your reaction to similar news for StarCraft 2 and Modern Warfare 2, we're guessing you're not going to like the information Command & Conquer 4 lead designer Sam Bass recently shared with Destructoid. According to him, the FMV-filled strategy title won't provide any LAN or dedicated server support to its players.

These two features were apparently struck from the game in favor of a server-based character progression system. Bass explained "if you go to another machine -- friend's house, Internet café -- whatever, you can login with your profile and all the stuff you've unlocked is accessible to you there. It all lives on a server so you can't really do dedicated servers with that." He also explained that the game's online networking is "a lot more solid," so you won't be left completely high and dry, as far as multiplayer skirmishes are concerned.

Still, we're worried about the future of the LAN-friendly strategy game, which appears to be turning into an endangered species. We've contacted Bono to see if he'd lend his musical support to a charity concert event.
No, it's not a bald joke. There are a lot of things worth highlighting in the cinematic trailer for Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight, but, for us, it's all about Kane's pretty orb above. We like to imagine it houses the universe and everything in it -- kinda like the one from Men in Black. While you're reading this post (and heading past the break to watch the trailer afterward), some weird space creature is playing a game of marbles with our little blue planet. C'est la vie!
Continue reading See Kane's sparkly globe in this Command & Conquer 4 trailer

See Kane's sparkly globe in this Command & Conquer 4 trailer originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 19 Feb 2010 19:30:00 EST. The free game wagon just keeps on a-rolling -- our PC-obsessed sister site Big Download recently directed our attention to three classic installments in the Command & Conquer franchise which are currently available to download for nary a penny: Tiberian Dawn, Tiberian Sun (with the Firestorm expansion pack), and Red Alert.

Installing the games might exact a price upon your patience -- Dawn and Alert both require a fair amount of tinkering to work on your futuristic computing rig. Still, we'd rather pay for games with patience than hard-earned dollars any day of the week.
Not only does it show the benefits of each class in the game, but it also reveals the new mission and player progression system. This time around, players will not only unlock things as they go along (utilizing a level-based system), but also given a choice during the campaign early on: stick with GDI or align yourself with series bad boy Kane and his NOD forces.

Either way you choose to go, one thing is certain: this is the end of the Tiberium storyline. Bass says that doesn't necessarily mean the door to the universe is shut forever, but that this particular story thread will conclude with C&C4.
Choose GDI or NOD in this Command & Conquer 4 trailer originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 12 Feb 2010 22:00:00 EST.
Each is comprised of several different units -- an offensive group on the GDI side is comprised of heavy tanks and walkers; the perfect fit for anyone looking to storm a base. On the Nod side, its air support units let players rain hell from above. It's all very appropriate stuff for the Command & Conquer series, really.
Combat abounds in this Command & Conquer 4 trailer originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 05 Feb 2010 18:00:00 EST. Those of you who guessed "comic book" along with us when the Command & Conquer team hinted that their universe was headed to a "new medium" were still stuck in the past of 2009 -- here in 2010, comics move like video, and they're called "motion comics." Geez, get with the decade! EA's posted a teaser trailer for the C&C "motion comic," created in conjunction with Ape Entertainment, and almost literally, all it says is that Episode 1 is coming soon.

There's also a guy in a truck who wants to know the same thing we do: What he's doing here. Oh yeah, and can we know where "here," is, too, and what this has to do with the game? You can head after the break to watch the entire teaser for yourself. Just be sure not to blink.
Electronic Arts launched the Command & Conquer 4 multiplayer beta today for those who want to kick the RTS game's tires -- or tank treads, as the case may be. To gain access, users will need to sign up on the Gamespot beta page. If the site runs out of keys, EA states: "DO NOT WORRY." There will be a "short waitlist" created, if necessary.

For those who don't want to bug-test the game (remember when people got paid for that?), Command & Conquer 4 declares full-scale war on its March 16 release.
Steam users report that the downloaded copies of Red Alert 3 don't include serial numbers, which the game requires for online play.

A similar issue occurred recently through Steam with the digital sale of Spore. That problem seems to have been resolved, and at least one Red Alert 3 player has been able to rectify the current error, though the solution required the game to be re-downloaded directly from EA (complete with SecuROM DRM). Still, EA's eventual intervention in Steam's Spore issue is a possible sign that these Red Alert 3 woes will be alleviated in a more timely manner.

[Thanks, Reid]
Update: Reader Tom suggests verifying the game cache in Steam (right click in "My Games," and find it under Properties > Local Files), which apparently identifies the files that need to be replaced to enable the game to work properly. Maybe that will help!
Red Alert 3 currently unplayable online through Steam [updated] originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 04 Jan 2010 12:29:00 EST. click to embiggen

The above image could mean a lot of things: that life is fleeting, that every day brings a new challenge, or that maybe you should cancel those plans to visit the Palace of Westminster next year. But according to the official Command & Conquer 4 website, it only means one thing: the RTS series is coming to a brand new medium in 2010, "never created for the C&C franchise before, until now." The image above is a sneak peek, the site says, but doesn't give us anything more than that.

Four color us crazy, but we look at the intricate chiaroscuro, inking, and shading above, and the words "comic book" jump to mind. But maybe that's too obvious. We'll be happy to follow C&C into whatever new medium it has planned, as long as it brings Tricia Helfer along.
During the same week that Braid finally discovers a point in time to arrive on the PSN, we can't help but notice that burlesque sensation Dita Von Teese has a theme for the PS3 and PSP available. Ms. Von Teese certainly makes a better theme than Hot Pockets, but we're just surprised to see the $2 item in the store. Now ... um, can we get a dynamic theme?

Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight will set upon retail on March 16 in North America and March 19 in Europe. The game will conclude the Tiberium storyline started many dusks and dawns ago in what was then Westwood's cherished RTS franchise. Pre-orders will grant access to the multiplayer beta, along with the game's soundtrack and a bonus mission.

Meanwhile, if the rumors are accurate, the Command & Conquer team can sadly expect to receive their dismissal papers from Electronic Arts around that time. It must be disturbing to live life like Rell the Cyclops (you know, from Krull!) and know the time of your own termination.

Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight sets out on March 16 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 12 Nov 2009 10:30:00 EST. We already knew the announced cuts coming to EA's workforce (totaling some 1,500 jobs lost) would be deep but, if a recent Kotaku report is to be believed, we're starting to get an idea of just where the gashes will come. For starters, the site says it's been told by unnamed sources that almost every member of the Command and Conquer 4 team would be let go after the game's completion, which is the very last Halo Wars feature we wanted to see copied in C&C.

More cuts are rumored to be hitting Pandemic (the house behind Mercenaries and The Saboteur) and Maxis (yeah, again). We'll keep reaching out to EA to get the official story. In the meantime, our thoughts are with those affected.
Rumor: EA cuts targeting Maxis, Pandemic, C&C staff originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Nov 2009 09:10:00 EST. Comrades, EA Mobile will attempt to bring full-scale RTS action to the iPhone this October with Command & Conquer: Red Alert. Control the Allies or the Soviets in 12 levels as you "drag and scroll to gauge the battlefield. Pinch-zoom in and out of the action. Select and move units with a tap." A touch-screen RTS sounds like a dream come true, but we'll reserve judgment until we see how the iPhone's tiny screen handles our mighty, meaty manpaws. Delicate, they are not.
Another Tuesday, more games for Xbox Live's Games on Demand service. This week, two new titles have been added, Shaun White Snowboarding and Command & Conquer 3. Shaun White is available everywhere except Canada, Japan and Korea, while Command & Conquer 3 is only available in -- deep breath -- Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, India, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and United Kingdom. As usual, pricing varies by region (Shaun White is $29.99 in the US). Check the links below to see the price for your region.

Shortcut: Xbox Live Marketplace: Shaun White Snowboarding
Shortcut: Xbox Live Marketplace: Command & Conquer 3

[Via Major Nelson]

Shaun White, C&C 3 added to Games on Demand originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Sep 2009 19:44:00 EST. The former is a classic Taito arcade game, while the latter is a standalone expansion to Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3. Both of them have their charms and both, as it happens, cost 800 ($10). Watch this week's XBLA in Brief and see if either one tickles your fancy.
Well, folks, it's not quite the Summer of Arcade anymore. Microsoft's Major Nelson has announced C&C Red Alert 3: Commander's Challenge and Bubble Bobble Neo as this week's Xbox Live Arcade releases. Despite the inclusion of "C&C Red Alert 3" right there in the title, the former game is a standalone experience and can be played without the original Red Alert 3 game disc.

Each title will draw 800 ($10) from your account, assuming it doesn't go toward this week's Xbox Live deal, Lode Runner.
Listen, we know you're excited to finally get your hands on EA's standalone strategy spin-off, Command & Conquer Red Alert 3: Commander's Challenge. You'll be able to fulfill your desires for meticulous action this week; the game is set to launch on XBLA this Wednesday and on PSN the day after for 800 ($10). You can temporarily satiate yourself by checking out the game's latest trailer after the jump.
However, before hastily acquiring the title, heed this warning: Commander's Challenge is infused with such a large dosage of Ric Flair that other items in your respective console's hard drive may get totally pumped and begin stylishly pummeling one another. Here at Joystiq, we endeavor to have something for everyone.

For example, we thought you real-time strategy fans would be interested to hear that the fourth installment of Command and Conquer had been subtitled "Tiberian Twilight," presumably because it supposedly brings the Tiberium story arc to a close. EA says more than 15,000 fans voted to select the name.

For you non-strategy fans, we've provided the following zingers on the subtitle.

"Tiberium Twilight? That series should have been put to bed years ago."

"Tiberium Twilight? Is that because it'll put us right to sleep?"

"Tiberium Twilight? As if it wasn't bad enough, now they're adding vampires that sparkle in the sunlight?"

"Tiberium Twilight? Wouldn't 'The Newest Command and Conquer Until Around Six Months From Now When We Release Another' have been more accurate?"

For you who can't be troubled to feel one way or the other, we put a video of a kid getting hit by a giant slingshot after the break. Don't ever let it be said we're not inclusive.
Continue reading Command & Conquer 4 subtitled 'Tiberian Twilight'

Command & Conquer 4 subtitled 'Tiberian Twilight' originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 26 Aug 2009 17:15:00 EST. Update: To be clear, the Commander's Challenge content does not require a Red Alert 3 disc and will be sold as a standalone product. We're sorry for any confusion this may have caused.

Though Command & Conquer Red Alert 3's Uprising expansion landed on PCs months ago, it seems a port of at least some of the expansion's content is heading to consoles this fall. The "Commander's Challenge" <strike>DLC</strike> standalone game is set to run you $10 and offers "50 intense challenges against a set of nine different commanders, including 16-time world champion "Nature Boy" Ric Flair." Sound familiar? That's because the ESRB let slip the first news of the DLC a little over a month ago.

EA's official confirmation of the <strike>DLC</strike> game also speaks of "giant Soviet war bears" and an "army of psionic Japanese school girls," but that's all old hat for you Red Alert 3 players out there. Given the price and relative lateness of it, we're curious if anyone other than the most hardcore of RA3 fans will bother picking it up. Well, casual Red Alert 3 players?

Red Alert 3 'Commander's Challenge' costs $10, coming to 360 / PS3 this fall [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 17 Aug 2009 12:40:00 EST. EA has released some new Command & Conquer 4 screens, which, while bearing a passing resemblance to previous titles in the venerable real-time strategy series, do offer a few glimpses at the gameplay changes EA has in store (like persistent player progression). The ESRB site has a listing for a potential new installment in the Command & Conquer franchise destined for the Xbox 360 and PS3 called Red Alert 3: Commander's Challenge. There's also a brief description for the title on the site, though it's a blurb that could fit almost any Command & Conquer game.

The 'Commander's Challenge' could pertain to the Uprising expansion for Red Alert 3 on the PC, which featured a game mode of the same name, so it wouldn't surprise us if this turned out to be a console port of that PC expansion. As long as they don't cut back on the Ric Flair, we're good.
That press release EA linked to yesterday? It's up now, which makes Command & Conquer 4 that little bit more real. Not only that, but everything mentioned in that online survey was also real. This will be the final chapter of the Tiberium series and will feature "persistent player progression and [an] all-in-one mobile base" when it launches in 2010 for PC.

Command & Conquer 4 will also feature a co-op mode for the two campaigns, as well as a 5-vs-5 objective-based multiplayer mode, allowing for a new "social real time strategy experience." Aren't those called LAN parties? EA's UK PR team just tweeted an announcement that Command & Conquer 4 is now in development, though the linked press release doesn't seem to exist yet. This seems to us like the result of an itchy trigger (or tweeter) finger. With recent online surveys asking what people would like to see in the next Command & Conquer, we were expecting an announcement sooner rather than later. Still, this is a little earlier than we -- and EA, seemingly -- had expected the announcement to come. We'll update you with more information on the game once the press release becomes available.
EA accidentally announces Command & Conquer 4 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 08 Jul 2009 12:30:00 EST.
Well? How about it? If this online survey -- conducted by British marketing firm 2CV -- is to be believed, the next Command & Conquer game could feature "innovative" RPG features, as well as co-operative multiplayer. The survey goes on to suggest that the RPG features will be persistent throughout your entire C&C4 career, with experience points accumulating constantly over successive games, allowing you to unlock new "units, powers and upgrades."

The survey also mentions taking control of "the first ever mobile base in RTS games" (guess they didn't play Warcraft 3, then,) as well as a class system, co-op gameplay and 5-v-5 multiplayer. Basically, it sounds like an MMO. Is that what you want from the next Command & Conquer? Be sure to let EA know.

Of course, none of these features are confirmed and any number of them could be shelved between now and the game actually being announced. Check out the second screenshot after the break for the full list of potential features.

[Thanks Jake!]

EA's perpetual joke -- on you -- comes to an ironic end on April Fools' Day with the release of de-authorization tools for each of its 19 PC games with SecuROM copy protection (full list and download links after the break). If you've been working on that class action lawsuit against EA for bundling SecuROM with The Sims 2: IKEA Home Stuff, you can drop it now -- your flat-pack furniture can finally be moved to a new machine.

In the spirit of generosity, EA's giving you two options for managing your authorizations:

Option 1: Download and install yet another "tool" in order to scan your computer for EA's SecuROM games and find out how many computer authorizations you have (or don't have) left for each title.

Option 2: Cut to the chase and download the game-specific de-authorization tool you need.
