This was a new Dante, a new Devil May Cry, and the series told through a westernized lens.

"Imagine Dante in a western movie," Capcom told Ninja Theory's art team. And so it did. There's Dante above, shooped into a scene from Brokeback Mountain - a very western movie, after all - and below Dante takes a breather with Brad Pitt in Fight Club.
Continue reading Seen@GDC: 'Imagine Dante in a Western movie'

Seen@GDC: 'Imagine Dante in a Western movie' originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 Mar 2013 21:30:00 EST. Capcom has announced the alternate DmC: Devil May Cry costumes outed by Japan last week are indeed coming to North America and Europe on January 29 and January 30, respectively.

All three costumes will set you back 320 MS Points ($3) on Xbox 360 and PS3 next week, one of which is the classic Devil May Cry 3 look seen above. The other two feature a blond Dante in a blue jacket, and what we can only imagine is Dante's favorite Goth underpass rave ensemble.

Gallery: DmC: Devil May Cry (Costume Pack DLC)

DmC costume DLC dolls up Dante in North America on Jan. 29 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Jan 2013 17:30:00 EST. We could never pull off Dante's flashy pendant seen above. It's free to anyone who purchases a copy of DmC: Devil May Cry through the Capcom store.

Of course, you don't have to wear the pendant. Yeah, that's right, we're bringing that gag back.

DmC: Devil May Cry launches on January 15, 2013 for the PS3 and Xbox 360; and on January 25 for the PC.
Dante's bling free when you buy Devil May Cry from Capcom originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 19 Dec 2012 02:00:00 EST. North American pre-orders through GameStop or EB Games get a code to download the content, along with the Samurai Weapons Pack, at no charge.

Vergil's Downfall tells "the untold story of Dante's twin brother," and considering it's labeled "downfall," we wouldn't bet that it's a particularly happy tale. The above trailer shows Vergil fighting with his classic Yamato sword, and the DLC promises new weapons, locations, enemies, combos and a separate storyline.

Vergil is also playable in Devil May Cry 3. Capcom US Producer Alex Jones understands this initial concern, but believes outrage is dissipating.

"There was always going to be people who saw new Dante and who didn't want it, and that's fine. Being angry about it - yeah I get that - but we always said, 'When you see the game and you play it, trust me, you're going to understand that we were doing the right thing.' Now that's happening," Jones tells VG24/7. "So yeah it's vindication, but it's not like smugly sitting back and going 'ha ha.' It's more like, 'We understand why you guys had doubts, and we knew that we had to prove this to you, and we were happy to do it.' That was our responsibility."

Despite Dante's new look, Jones says there's a lot to the character that will be familiar to fans of the series - and not just his twin pistols and sword. "He's still irreverent, he's still - at the end of the day - the guy who will kick your ass and drop a cool one liner afterwards."

The interview delves into story and other philosophies behind Ninja Theory's reboot, so hit up the source link below to read the full interview.
Doubts over DMC's Dante dissipating, Capcom says originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 24 Aug 2012 23:59:00 EST. In the modern setting of Limbo City, Vergil is the boss of The Order, an organization tasked with battling the demons in control, and he recruits Dante to fight with him. This marks a new role for Vergil, tempered by familiar features.

"We tried to retain certain motifs that were essential to the character," Capcom producer Motohide Eshiro told Joystiq at Gamescom. "So he retains the silver hair, he retains the blue coloration of his outfit and the refinement of the character. Storyline-wise, as to how he may or may not interact directly with Dante and certain effects on gameplay, this is something we'll talk about at a later date. The biggest change, the visual, the way he interacts with the storyline, is quite different than what we've seen before. There's more to come; watch this space."

When we asked directly if Vergil would be a playable character in DmC, Eshiro laughed and said, motioning to the PR rep in the room, "No comment there, or else he'll have to murder us, I think."

The emphasis on Vergil's classic features was in no way a reactionary measure to fan backlash when Dante's new look was revealed, Eshiro said. Capcom and Ninja Theory had Vergil planned before the public saw Dante, and both teams knew exactly what they wanted then. Along with the traditional aspects of Vergil's appearance, the longstanding tension between him and Dante will play a part in DmC's story as well.

Dante's other, smaller companion in DmC, a psychic named Kat, has more to offer than advice on navigating Limbo City's demonic and earth-bound worlds, Eshiro said. She's not necessarily a love interest, but she does help Dante connect with deeper emotions than his initial rush of vengeance and anger.

As for any other cameos from classic Devil May Cry names, Eshiro said, "There are plenty of characters we haven't yet touched on. We're not ready to talk about what other characters are in the game just yet, but rest assured there will be some forthcoming news."
Vergil's leading role in DmC: Devil May Cry originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Aug 2012 11:40:00 EST. His translator said it wasn't the first time they'd been asked. "But I kind of wish he was now," Antoniades said.

The news anchor, it turns out, is a demon, and his radical, extremist views on human morality mean he will say anything to villainize Dante in Limbo City, even reverting to out-dated, irreverent labels such as "terrorist" and "sexual deviant" in loud, alarmist segments. Thankfully we don't have anything like that in reality.

Dante's redesign stems from Capcom Japan giving Ninja Theory complete creative control over the new title. Capcom wants to connect with the western market in a bold and distinctive way and, to Ninja Theory, that means Dante's new appearance, portraying him with short brown hair, a lean body and sleeping naked, apparently.

Dante is a rebel in every sense of the word: His sword is named Rebellion, he's part angel and demon rolled into a fleshy human body, and he's out to destroy Lilith, the demon in control of Limbo City. Anything else you may hear about his character may just be over-hyped lies disguised as truth -- or news.
DmC's Dante isn't gay, he's just the victim of sensationalist demon news originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 08 Jun 2012 15:00:00 EST. Unsurprisingly, Dante hates demons and authority and he uses his hybrid human-demon abilities to fight for the "little guy," as Capcom puts it.

The photos -- which you can peruse below -- display design concepts for Dante and his weapons, Ebony & Ivory and Rebellion, and show them in use against a few demons in a shadowy Las Vegas-esque setting. We don't want to jump on the "Dante looks like a girl" bandwagon (because he totally doesn't... most of the time), but wearing a tank top, from behind, those curves can be deceiving. Just like he wants it.

Gallery: DmC: Devil May Cry (3/1/12)

DmC art and screens show what happens when you're raised by demons originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 01 Mar 2012 16:00:00 EST. The reaction to Dante's new look for the Devil May Cry reboot had Capcom asking, "Why so serious?" The publisher's VP of Strategic Planning and Biz Dev. Christian Svensson told IGN that the company knew Dante's new look would bring a "knee-jerk reaction from fans." He said, "To be fair, I think some of the strategy here was to create that discussion and dialogue, and I think it drastically raises the visibility of the title versus if we had just done another Dante."

He explained the original concepts that came back for the new Dante were too close to the flamboyant source material. Capcom's Keiji Inafune and Hideaki Itsuno weren't having any of that and told the team to, according to Svensson, be "much more creative." Svensson explains that, "This is meant to be an origin story, so this is Dante before you knew who Dante was." Wait, you mean he was more than that guy with the white hair, wearing a red leather trench coat? Surprising, 'cause that's all we can seem to remember about him.
Capcom: Dante redesign controversy raises DMC's visibility originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 21 Oct 2010 14:00:00 EST. The upcoming "Trials of St. Lucia" expansion for Dante's Inferno will put you up against a force far more malevolent than Beelzebub himself: The inherently mean spirit of the online gamer. Dante will have to conquer challenges crafted by other players, which will most assuredly be more difficult than any brawl that came packaged in the game. Why, you might ask? Because everyone on the internet wants you to be miserable.

Don't give up hope! Greg Rizzer, the game's lead designer, created the video posted above, which is chock-full of helpful tips to keep you from succumbing to this deluge of pain. Would it be possible to use Dante Alighieri's spinning corpse in oil derricks, as as a sort of fleshy drill, or perhaps to power a large centrifuge? That might be a real opportunity if Dante's Inferno executive producer Jonathan Knight gets to make a follow-up to his forthcoming adaptation, a hope he elaborated on for G4.

There's a hitch though: While Knight knows that EA will want a sequel to the game if it performs well, he's not sure that the follow up in The Divine Comedy, Purgatorio, will lend itself as well to a game.

... So Visceral can turn one of the great literary works into a game about a scythe-wielding maniac fighting nipple-born monsters, but making a game about the seven-layer Mount of Purgatory that ends in Earthly Paradise is beyond it? Really?
Dante's Inferno producer hopes for sequel, despite challenges originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 14 Dec 2009 19:00:00 EST. "Well, you know, I do think Dante would approve of our game. We may not always have loved every one of his games or his hairstyles, but we wanted to take a moment to tip our hat to Dante, whose Devil May Cry series has reached the milestone of 10 million units shipped. For some perspective, 10 million pennies would make a six-foot by six-foot cube, a cube we imagined would be considerably larger and more impressive before we started doing the math.

When asked if he was choked up by the news, Dante said, "Devils never cry ... These tears, tears are a gift only humans have." Nero later chimed in unprompted that he was going to Disneyworld.
Devil May Cry hits 10 million shipped originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 18 Mar 2009 09:08:00 EST. Variety reports that four movie studios are currently bidding for the film rights to Electronic Arts' as-yet unnannounced game based on Dante's Inferno. EA's recently been on a movie deal bender, selling the rights to films based on Army of Two (suckers) and Mass Effect, but this is the first real "cart before horse" deal we've heard about.

We've certainly seen some high-profile game-to-movie deals in recent memory, with Gore Verbinski helming BioShock and Brett Ratner taking on God of War. Maybe it doesn't matter that movie executives are bidding on the rights to a game that nobody has seen, but for our money we'd like to know if there's an audience for it first.
Variety: EA making Dante's 'Inferno' game, studios bidding for movie rights originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 31 Oct 2008 10:30:00 EST. It caused us to wonder what other kind of team-up could be not only a commercial success, but also a game we actually want to play.

And, like responsible bloggers, we decided that we couldn't think of anything good and instead would pass the buck onto you. So, what do you all think? Can you come up with some titles? How about a Duck Hunt clone where Mega Man and Samus compete to see who can shoot the most clay Metroids? Capcom's leather-clad bender Devil May Cry 4 has shipped out an impressive 2 million units since its debut two weeks ago, making it the first game in the opulent franchise to reach the milestone so quickly and the latest feather in the cap for Capcom's now 9 million unit selling series.

This accolade is no doubt helped by the fact that the sequel, unlike those that came before it, was released for two platforms simultaneously, satiating players' thirst for over-the-top action regardless if they wave their banner over the Xbox 360 or PS3. In addition, Capcom continues to note that a PC version, for those inclined to play console-style games while tethered to their monitor and desk chair, will be released in the months ahead.
Devil May Cry 4 sheds 2 million tears originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Feb 2008 10:00:00 EST. Capcom's over-the-top action extravaganza, Devil May Cry 4, has debuted at the top of the UK's all-format software sales chart, rudely bumping previous one-er Burnout: Paradise down to fourth place. GamesIndustry.biz reports that 61 percent of the title's sales came from the Xbox 360 version, a fact which is sure to make loyalists and rabid petitioners weep uncontrollably. Of course, it didn't help that the PlayStation 3 version had to deal with price gouging and an installation stigma.

In other satanic sniveling news, Capcom has announced that the Devil May Cry 4 demo has been downloaded over a million times on Xbox Live, making it the first piece of code to do so in 2008. Since appearing on the network January 24th, it's reportedly been averaging over 25,000 downloads a day.
Devil May Cry 4 tears up UK charts originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 12 Feb 2008 15:57:00 EST.
Shed a tear for those who still feel utterly betrayed by a huge, profit-seeking corporation's decision to release a game on more than one platform. The (fan)boycotters are missing out on all the demon demolishing found in Devil May Cry 4, Capcom's latest take on the continuing struggle between the forces of evil and whichever sword-wielding smack talker walks out of the salon first. Though Beelzebub's fourth bawl brawl clearly sticks to the franchise formula, we think Dante Lite (pictured above) is crashing a party that only got into full swing with the third game.

Eurogamer (70/100): "After more than seven years, the Devil May Cry series finds itself in the same kind of safe, reliable trough that Resident Evil was in before Resi 4. DMC4 can still fall back on rock-solid combat mechanics and some standout moments, but it feels as though it's comfortable to slowly refine what was good about previous versions rather than evolve into something spectacular."

1UP (85/100): "Although it dips into the recycling bin a bit too much, Devil May Cry 4 still remains a must-play title for action-adventure gamers. Its gorgeous trappings, addictive combat, and well-balanced difficulty make it the most satisfying DMC in years, and Dante's such a killer character that you'll actually want to tackle the game on a tougher difficulty in order to fully explore his amazing arsenal."

IGN: (87/100): "Though the focus might be more on Nero than Dante, and could've been named something else with a Dante cameo, DMC4 still has everything that fans expect of the game - over the top fight sequences, tons of replayability and an experience with an excellent production value. Whether it's on the PS3 or the 360, action fans are going to get one incredible experience with this game, and if you own either system, you'll have a great time."

If you're not too busy playing Satan's Sudoku, you may want to lend some of your time to Beelzebub's bawling buddy, Devil May Cry 4. Though rumor had it arriving a tad later, the folks at Capcom have confirmed that a demo of the extravagant actioner is due to arrive on Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network this Thursday, January 24th.

Demo May Cry will acquaint players with newcomer Nero, the franchise's third silver-haired, sword-wielding weirdo with a penchant for killing demons in spectacular fashion (that coat is snazzy!). Devil May Cry 4 is only a month away from release and we were itching to sit down for a few hours and try out the final build. From what we've seen, the game has been polished so much we could almost see our faces in it. It's clear that DMC4 has benefited from being pushed back to early '08, if only because it now has the Q1 stage all to itself.

The gameplay hasn't changed much since Devil May Cry 1, but fans of the series should see no problems with that. Having said that, numerous new features have been added, with Nero's crazy arm (used for grabbing, throwing and slamming, natch) reminding us of Evil Dead 2. That can only be a good thing, right? Its ability to cling onto nearby floating objects in order to reach higher places is ripped straight from Onimusha 3, though the timing based jump puzzles seen here make things a little different.

One such puzzle requires you to hop across a spike-filled room by grabbing jump points that can disappear and reappear at random. Grab at the wrong time and the spikes will damage you, causing you to plummet into a room full of marionettes (those being the things trying to kill you most of the time) below. Did we fall? Maybe. Maybe we fell three times. So what if we did?

Gallery: Devil May Cry 4 (PS3)

Continue reading Joystiq hands-on: Devil May Cry 4 (PS3)

Joystiq hands-on: Devil May Cry 4 (PS3) originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 09 Jan 2008 09:00:00 EST. Getting gifts and embarrassing ourselves while under the influence of copious amounts of alcohol are reasons enough to count down until the new year, but Capcom has given us another reason to continue to mark through days on the kitchen calender, announcing plans to release a free playable demo of Devil May Cry 4 over both the Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Store in early 2008.

It's unclear exactly what will be included in the demo, with Capcom saying only that the download will serve to introduce the game's new hero, Nero, and feature levels "chosen to showcase Devil May Cry 4's varied locales and allow gamers to familiarize themselves with Nero's unique abilities." The demo will also include in-game instructions on how to use DMC4's Exceed sword charge system and various superhuman abilities, made possible by Nero's "Devil Bringer" powers, and will be capped off with a fight against a surly boss named Berial. We hope the boss has insurance, because players have been waiting a long time revisit Devil May Cry, and we imagine Berial is going to buried many times before the game's February 5, 2008 release.
Devil May Cry 4 demo confirmed for PSN, XBL in early 2008 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 07 Dec 2007 10:00:00 EST. What lurks inside is barely adequate, but Capcom has announced the contents of the Devil May Cry 4 Collector's Edition. A far cry from the cat helmets and Big Daddies we've come to expect from these sorts of compilations, this collection's highlight will be a DVD containing the first four episodes of ADV Film's Devil May Cry: The Animated Series.

A second DVD, designed to be slipped into your computer, will also be included, and will feature a "making of" video, the DMC4 soundtrack, as well as icons, screen savers, and wallpapers. Underwhelming, sure, though what we're most disappointed in is that while the powers that be at Capcom decided to include an artbook in the collection, they went the cheap route and simply stamped the eye candy digitally onto a DVD.

All of this will of course come stuffed inside a metal case, and while we enjoy shiny tin boxes as much as anyone, Capcom's gall to ask $80, some $20 more than the regular edition's asking price, for this lackluster montage is enough to make even our jaded heads shake in amazement. The special edition will ship for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 alongside the regular editions on February 5, 2008.
Capcom reveals mediocre Devil May Cry 4 special edition originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 05 Nov 2007 14:56:00 EST. Earth-shattering announcements are made, megatons are dropped and the entire gaming community explodes and reconstitutes itself so often that the rest of the internet views it as a sort of radioactive leper who's constantly chasing after a pair of misplaced thumbs. Perhaps that's why, every now and then, we're good for a laugh.

Take this online petition, for instance. Whether it's made in jest or not doesn't really change the fact that it's absolutely hysterical. It seems a group of Devil May Cry fans are extremely upset about the game going to the Xbox 360 and PC in addition to the PS3 -- so much so that they're going to boycott Capcom and not buy either version. As the internets are fond of saying, "Oh noes!"

"We (The people that have signed this petition) feel very left out in your decision to make Devil May Cry 4 a Multi-Platform title and hereby agree to boycott your sale of Capcom affiliated games," it reads. "This is due to your decision to turn your back on your most faithful gaming company. For years we have enjoyed games, we have reaped the benefits of your committment to Sony. We find it absolutely demoralizing for not only the gamers, but also Sony itself. We want you to know that will not, and should not stand for your actions, and therefore withold our option of buying your product."

Oh dear, Capcom. Not only have you gone and left people out by making your game available to more gamers (not to be confused with fans, apparently), but you've demoralized a huge corporation! As a few readers noted, something was up with the silhouette of Dante on the official website. Indeed there was -- turns out, that's not Dante at all. That's Nero. Name sounds familiar, doesn't it? Check your DMC documents to see if you can connect the name to the story (because honestly, we forgot where we heard the name and don't intend on playing through all three games today). Dante will still be around, but perceived as an enemy who kills Nero's allies. The Dante we see is post-DMC1 but pre-DMC2 (game chronology therefore runs 3, 1, 4, 2).

Nero himself can do most of the Dante-juggling we've grown to love. He also has a handy, well, hand, that can pull distant enemies in or throw close enemies away. Some of the combat elements of DMC3 have been tweaked for this installment, but it's more or less under wraps until the Tokyo Game Show, where we can play a stage as Nero. There will also be a special announcement. Possibly that Dante is an unlockable character with a (possibly) independant story. That'd be cool, but it's doubtful. We can hope, though! Check us out after midnight tonight for our take on the open official website. Oh, and if that's not enough fun, check out some new DMC4 scans.

[Thanks to Andrew Yoon for the scan link!]
How about some more Devil May Cry 4 news? originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 Sep 2006 14:30:00 EST. Power -- Give me more power!"

This isn't quite a rant, more of an excited boy getting geared up for one of his favorite gaming franchises. The Devil May Cry 4 teaser site is active and is promising something will happen in seven days. No, not a mysterious call from a little girl who brings your life to an end. At least, we hope not. What could happen? A full-blown gameplay trailer (since it's going to be playable at TGS, those of us who can't attend would like to see the game in action)? Some sort of contest? Just a looping image of Dante laughing at us?

From the quote at the top of the page, is it safe to assume this latest entry in the series takes place after the events of Devil May Cry 2? This blogger's memory of that game's story is fuzzy at best. The third one completely erased any sort of images from the mind. Either it takes place after the second, or could it be the story of the legendary Sparda? Though the character shown at last year's E3 looked a lot like Dante. Maybe his brother? Ahh, the excitement. Hopefully the difficulty will remain medium-to-high. We are sure the guys over at Bungie are feeling an eerily similar fate to Level 14 this week (the fruits of their labor we will likely see at Microsoft's press conference today).

Second place went to GU Comics' stab on the ESRB, and third place was claimed by Little Gamers' geek test. Thanks to everyone who voted; we may be busy at E3, but be sure to let us know of any great game-related (especially E3-related) webcomics you come across this week.

* Not really, but that's kind of obvious.

[Thanks again to Scott Johnson for all the comical E3 banners]
Readers pick best webcomic (April 30 - May 6, 2006) originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 09 May 2006 09:57:00 EST.
