For one, projects aren't vetted for plausibility or quality outside of a standard registration form; your grandmother could accidentally promise the world 500 pounds of brownies if she raises $5, and there's nothing holding her to following through or using that money for brownie-related purposes.<br /><br />For another, Kickstarter is US only. Creative ventures outside of the US can't begin a crowd-funded project, though anyone with a major credit card can donate to a project and watch its success with yearning in his heart. Also, Kickstarter caters to a wide range of products and ideas, making its reach broad but its expertise in handling any one industry dim.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.lab.gamesplanet.com/">Gamesplanet Lab</a> is a new crowd-funding platform that handles only gaming projects, has a strict vetting and follow-through contract, and is based in Europe but is able to host projects from around the world. Yes, that does sound like everything you ever wanted in Kickstarter. The only thing Gamesplanet Lab needs now is proof that it can work - it needs a breakout crowd-funding success.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/19/gamesplanet-lab-kickstarters-crowd-creating-competitor/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gamesplanet Lab: Kickstarter's 'crowd-creating' competitor</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/19/gamesplanet-lab-kickstarters-crowd-creating-competitor/">Gamesplanet Lab: Kickstarter's 'crowd-creating' competitor</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Jul 2012 17:00:00 EST. According to Activision's early "internal estimates," this week's launch of <em>Call of Duty: Black Ops</em> is the series' largest -- financially speaking -- of all time, accruing $360 million in sales thus far between the United States and the United Kingdom. Accounting for all that money is an approximate 5.6 million copies landing in customers' hands solely on November 9, compared with 4.7 million moved during last year's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/12/modern-warfare-2-breaks-record-with-4-7-million-in-day-one-sales/">Modern Warfare 2</a></em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/12/modern-warfare-2-breaks-record-with-4-7-million-in-day-one-sales/"> launch</a>.<br />
<br />
In case you needed further proof that the vast majority of the <em>millions</em> of <em>Call of Duty</em> players out there don't have any idea about that whole <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/@call-of-duty">Infinity Ward debacle</a>, or don't have any hangups over which studio makes the year's <em>CoD</em>, here it is.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/11/call-of-duty-black-ops-day-one-sales/">Activision: Black Ops tops Modern Warfare 2 day-one sales record, with 5.6M sold in US and UK</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 11 Nov 2010 09:56:00 EST. There's been some dispute as to whether <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modern-warfare-2"><em>Modern Warfare 2</em></a> had the biggest first-day sales presence in the entire entertainment industry. Sure, its $401 million launch day revenue topped literally every other piece of entertainment media ever released, but in terms of units sold, it was surpassed by the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Potter_and_the_Deathly_Hallows"><em>Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows</em></a> book and ticket sales for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Knight_%28film%29"><em>The Dark Knight</em></a>. <br />
<br />
However, in an attempt to clear up any obscurity, the Guinness Book of World Records <a href="http://community.guinnessworldrecords.com/_Call-of-Duty-Modern-Warfare-2-Most-Successful-Entertainment-Launch-of-All-Time/BLOG/2308082/7691.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&amp;utm_medium=twitter">proclaimed</a> that the game had the "Most Successful Entertainment Launch of All-Time." Though we shudder to think that we live in a world where success is measured in the amount of money earned, and not the number of lives a book, movie or game touches, we suppose congratulations are in order. So, congratulations, <em>Modern Warfare 2</em>! Guinness says <em>you did it</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/21/guinness-modern-warfare-2-had-biggest-entertainment-launch-ever/">Guinness: Modern Warfare 2 had biggest entertainment launch ever</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 21 Apr 2010 16:30:00 EST. Here we are, September 18, and the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fracture">Fracture</a> </em>demo <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/10/fracture-demo-to-reshape-xbox-live-sept-18/">promised</a> by LucasArts has landed on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/xbox-live-marketplace">Xbox Live Marketplace</a>. Weighing in at 772MB, the demo allows players to sample a section of <em>Fracture</em>'s single player campaign. Using the game's terrain deformation system, players can try their hand at creating and destroying the landscape using a variety of weapons. Here's hoping that creating hills, holes, craters and spires is enough to keep things interesting. If you've been anxious to try out <em>Fracture</em>'s much vaunted terrain deformation, give it a go.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/18/fracture-demo-sends-shockwaves-through-xbox-live/">Fracture demo sends shockwaves through Xbox Live</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 18 Sep 2008 09:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/LucasArts/">LucasArts</a> has <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/10/breaking-news-fracture-demo-due-on-sept-18/">announced</a> that an earth-shattering demo of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fracture"><em>Fracture</em></a> is scheduled to crack up the Xbox Live Marketplace on Thursday, September 18. If you need a little help digging the name <em>Fracture</em> from your mind, it's a third person shooter with the central mechanic of land deformation, which the devlopers have cleverly dubbed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/03/fracture-to-literally-change-360-landscape/">Terrain Deformation</a>. Players can build their own cover or, conversely, pull the land out from under the feet of approaching enemies. Land deformation can also be used for other things, such as accessing otherwise unreachable areas (think of it like a dirt elevator).<br /><br />For those who enjoy the demo, <em>Fracture </em>will be hitting retail on October 7 in North America and October 10 in Euorpe.<br /><br />

In <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/gametrailerstv_player.php?ep=27&amp;sd=1&amp;ch=1">the latest episode of GameTrailers TV</a>, baby-faced Geoff Keighley got a chance to have a pow-wow with <em>Gears of War</em> <em>2</em>'s designer and poster boy, Cliff Bleszinski, who <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/07/12/gow2-day-one-revealed-bots-confirmed-and-more/">revealed some of the game's heretofore unannounced additions</a>. Chief among said additions are a new multiplayer map titled "Day-One", which features a sizable <a href="http://gearsofwar.wikia.com/wiki/Emergence_Hole">emergence hole</a> and its massive, treacherous occupant, and the inclusion of AI bots in the game's multiplayer modes, as featured in another of Epic's staple franchises, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Unreal%20Tournament">Unreal Tournament</a></em>.<br /><br />Other big reveals during the episode include the revivification of a map from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/03/gears-of-war-hidden-fronts-map-pack-now-available/">the original <em>Gears</em>' "Hidden Fronts" DLC pack</a> titled "Subway", the addition of player-controlled tanks, and a limited edition red, <em>Gears of War 2</em>-themed Xbox 360 to be released around the title's launch.
