Here's a story that you're probably going to see a lot over the next few years: A company started giving away its game for free, and now reports that it's making more money than before. That's what happened to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/turbine">Turbine</a>, maker of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dungeons-and-dragons-online"><em>Dungeons and Dragons Online</em></a> MMO. Last year, it decided to move <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/09/turbine-announces-free-to-play-dungeons-and-dragons-online-eber/">from a subscription model to free-to-play</a>, instead earning its revenue off of in-game transactions, and now it's announced that <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/27416/Going_Free_Boosts_Turbines_DDO_Revenues_500_Percent.php">income has increased by 500%</a> and the game is making more money than ever.<br />
<br />
<em>DDO</em> is sort of a special case here -- the game was already developed for a subscription model, so the content might be a little more in-depth (not to mention officially licensed) than you'd find on most free-to-play properties. And since the game still does offer subscription plans, <a href="http://www.massively.com/2010/02/26/one-million-new-adventurers-in-dungeons-and-dragons-online/">the number of subscribers has actually doubled</a> since the changeover (there's no information about whether more money is being made from selling in-game items or from new players who have decided to subscribe). But you can be sure other game developers are closely watching this model, and it's not a stretch to think that, in the next few years, we'll see many more publishers -- of MMOs and otherwise -- try to pull off the paradox of making more money by giving their games away for free.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/02/turbine-makes-more-money-by-giving-its-mmo-away-for-free/">Turbine makes more money by giving its MMO away for free</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 02 Mar 2010 02:00:00 EST. According to <a href="http://www.ddo.com/news/597-get-into-ddo-unlimited-early-head-start-begins-on-september-1st">a recent Turbine press release</a>, the developer's free-to-play, D20-rolling MMO, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ddo"><em>Dungeons and Dragons Online</em>: </a><em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ddo">Eberron Unlimited</a> </em>will be granting early access to ... well, to people who've already had their fair share of early access. Though the game <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/31/dungeons-and-dragons-online-ebberon-unlimited-dated-for-septemb/">launches on September 9</a>, anyone who is a former or current subscriber to <em>DDO</em>, or those who participated in <em>Unlimited</em>'s closed beta, can log onto the game <em>right this hot second</em>.<br /><br />The game offers all the <em>DDO</em> action you (might) know and (may) love, albeit with a higher level cap and lower price. Sure, you'll still need to dish out a few bucks for access to the game's full catalog of zones, classes, races and items -- but even without this premium content, there's plenty of <em>game</em> available for the Gygax enthusiast on a budget.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ddo-eberron-unlimited/">DDO: Eberron Unlimited</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ddo-eberron-unlimited/#2249049"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/11_mod_restless_isles_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ddo-eberron-unlimited/#2249025"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/01_mod_restless_isles_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ddo-eberron-unlimited/#2249026"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/talon_darsin_sharn_overlord_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ddo-eberron-unlimited/#2249027"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/gnoll_wizard_battle_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ddo-eberron-unlimited/#2249028"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/goldstone_manor_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/01/ddo-eberron-unlimited-rolls-high-initiative-gets-early-head-sta/">DDO Eberron Unlimited rolls high initiative, gets early head-start release</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Sep 2009 23:59:00 EST. Turbine's free-to-play online game, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/09/turbine-announces-free-to-play-dungeons-and-dragons-online-eber/"><em>Dungeons &amp; Dragons Online: Ebberon Unlimited</em></a>, has officially been dated for September 9. As in 9/9/09, the cursed date of<em> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamcast">cursing</a></em>.<br /><br />The game is currently in beta right now and the final product will support micro-transactions and paid accounts for those who find they fancy both dungeons and dragons <em>a lot</em>. Good news for MMO fans comes courtesy of Turbine today, as the company has announced it's starting beta on a new game, <em>Dungeons and Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited,</em> a free-to-play version of its popular MMO. Players can download the game for free at <a href="http://www.ddo.com/">DDO.com</a>, and utilize the new <em>DDO </em>Store in-game to purchase a variety of items and whatnot for their characters.<br /><br />The free-to-play game will also offer paid accounts (wait, what?) known as DDO VIPs, which unlock a host of features compared to the somewhat-robust feature set available to more frugal gamers. The fine folks at Massively were able to take a screenshot showing off what the differences are, and you can check that out <a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/06/09/ddo-adds-free-to-play-with-eberron-unlimited/">right here</a>. So while the cheapskate gamers get a surprising amount of content, you're really going to have to pony up for the full experience. <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/06/09/ddo-adds-free-to-play-with-eberron-unlimited/">Massively</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/09/turbine-announces-free-to-play-dungeons-and-dragons-online-eber/">Turbine announces free-to-play Dungeons and Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 09 Jun 2009 22:00:00 EST. Another executive has leveled up to MMO developer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/turbine">Turbine</a>. Following recent appointments of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/10/turbine-names-travel-mogul-as-operations-vp/">Ken Surdan</a> as operations vice president in March and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/13/ex-flagship-execs-recruited-for-new-turbine-studio/">ex-Flagship guys</a> Dave Brevik and Jeff Lind last October, former Glu Mobile exec Nate Jones has joined Turbine as the company's new VP of corporate and business development. In his new job, Jones will look after licensing partnerships, joint ventures and mergers and acquisitions for the company.<br /><br />The position should be familiar to Jones, who previously served as Glu Mobile's vice prez of strategy and corporate development, a role which to our untrained ears sounds very much the same as his new duties at Turbine. Granted we're sometimes not up to speed on the latest corporate speak, so while this all sounds impressive in truth this could just be a fancy way of describing Jones' work as Turbine's newest sandwich artist. He picked a hell of a day to quit working at Glu.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/28/former-glu-mobile-exec-nate-jones-joins-turbine/">Former Glu Mobile exec Nate Jones joins Turbine </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 28 May 2009 03:00:00 EST. There's a new sheriff in town at MMO factory <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/turbine">Turbine</a>. Well, sheriff is probably too strong of a word. How about deputy? Or, barring that, principal, maybe. Whatever the case, his name is Ken Surdan, and he's the dev's new VP of operations. <br /><br />Surdan's duties will be many in the new role, from fostering customer relations to overseeing the global operations of each of Turbine's franchises, including <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/lord-of-the-rings-online/"><em>The Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ddo"><em>Dungeons &amp; Dragons Online</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/asherons-call"><em>Asheron's Call</em></a>. Now, looking over his resume, he doesn't have much -- well, okay <em>any </em>game industry experience. Still, the 15 year corporate vet has served in a number of high profile positions at such travel companies as TripAdvisor Media Network and National Leisure Group, making him the one to call on when execs want to get away ... even if he doesn't know his experience point from a platinum piece.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/10/turbine-names-travel-mogul-as-operations-vp/">Turbine names travel mogul as operations VP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Mar 2009 00:10:00 EST. It's time to fire up the speculation engine boys and girls, as a pair of developments at <em>Lord of the Rings Online</em> developer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/turbine">Turbine</a> indicate that MMO studio may have aspirations to bring <em>Dungeons &amp; Dragons Online</em> to the living room. The Westwood-based company has <a href="http://www.cytiva.com/turbin/ext/DetailTurbine.asp?turbin1428">posted a job opening</a> for a senior console engineer with a MMO background as well as experience developing on both the Xbox 360 and PS3. Additionally, Turbine made public on its <a href="http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=149498"><em>DDO </em>community forum</a> that the game's developers are "working full-tilt on several things that are still under tight wraps," and that <em>"DDO </em>will be getting more and more focus from Turbine's marketing and PR teams over the coming months." <br /><br />While far from conclusive, together this information makes a convincing argument for Turbine prepping its pen-and-paper inspired MMO for the console market. It makes sense, particularly given the company's recent <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/01/turbine-secures-40-million-investment/">financial</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/04/time-warner-inc-invests-in-lotro-developer-turbine/">investments</a>, part of which Turbine CEO Jim Crowley admitted will go towards expanding the dev's supported platforms. For now, however, we continue to wait for any official word while making saving throws vs. patience and taking all of this with 1D6 grains of salt.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/10/rumor-turbine-to-bring-dungeons-and-dragons-online-to-consoles/">Rumor: Turbine to bring Dungeons &amp; Dragons Online to consoles...maybe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Jun 2008 08:10:00 EST. Codemasters CEO Rod Cousens went full-out lady of the night in an <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/29358/Cousens-Were-the-best-buy-in-games">MCV interview</a> speaking about industry consolidation, saying his company should be considered attractive to potential suiters. Cousens believes Codemasters is "the fastest growing company in the fastest growing entertainment sector" and believes it is "unrivaled" as a privately-owned company.<br /><br />Well then, wow, that's coming on strong. Codemasters did have an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/19/codemasters-pushed-into-record-year-by-us-sales/">admittedly strong 2007</a> despite the mixed quality of games like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Overlord/">Overlord</a></em>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Dirt/">Dirt</a></em> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/24/metareview-clive-barkers-jericho-xbox-360-ps3-pc/"><em>Je</em><em>richo</em></a>. The company is also planning its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/08/codemasters-online-launches-new-consumer-event-this-march-in-bir/">Codemasters Online convention</a> for Birmingham, England in March. Codemasters Online is producing a <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=31943">Blizzcon</a> style event called Codemasters Online Connect 2008 (that's just not a sexy name) featuring its lineup of MMO games. Attendees will log into the real world at <a href="http://www.omega-sektor.com/">Omega Sektor</a> in Birmingham, England on March 14 and 15 to log right back out again on 400 PCs running various Codemaster Online games. Alternatively, they can stick around the real world a little bit for round-table discussions and pose questions to the "Codemasters Online team." Ticket prices have yet to be announced.<br /><br />The event will <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=31943">showcase</a> games already out like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/lotro"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ddo"><em>Dungeons &amp; Dragons Online</em></a>, and will apparently offer some game announcements. Turbine has already experienced success with <em>Dungeons &amp; Dragons Online</em> in China and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/29/dandd-online-launches-in-japan/">Japan</a>, thanks to some effective content localization, and CDC will use a similar strategy by giving Middle-earth a distinctly Asian makeover. Also, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/03/download-oblivions-horse-armor-for-a-price/">horse armor</a> debate may soon find new life overseas, as there are plans for several Chinese game operators to switch from a subscription-based revenue model to the sale of virtual goods and other downloadable content "needed to advance various games".<br /><br />The article is supplemented by a <a href="http://images.businessweek.com/ss/06/07/china_games/index_01.htm?chan=top+news_top+news">slideshow</a> that showcases China's hottest online games, one of which hails from the States -- <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/03/19/metareview-dungeons-and-dragons-online-stormreach/"><em>Dungeons &amp; Dragons Online: Stormreach</em></a>. This is consistent with vendors I visited during a recent trip to Shanghai who claimed that <em>DDO</em> was among their bestsellers.<br /><br />See also:<br />

Cari Davidson over at MMORPG.com thinks we could use a lot more, and feels that a true MMORPG with an engaging storyline has yet to be created. She refers to the current crop of online time sinks as "glorified chat rooms" that are big on player interaction, but void of entertaining narrative or character development. The type of experience Davidson longs for may not be possible in today's MMOs, and she acknowledges this, sort of. Initially, she claims "it's really not that hard" to create player interactions that blend well with role-playing, character development, and storytelling. But then she recants, "telling a story in a world populated by thousands of players is a big challenge." <br /><br />I would subscribe to the latter train of thought, and I suspect <em>Dungeons &amp; Dragons Online</em> developer Turbine would as well. <em>DDO</em> favors the "meet and greet" party formation, and the system creates an instance of each dungeon for you and your co-players. This type of controlled gameplay experience allows for the possibility of more immersive storytelling, but its execution has met with little success. As a result, Turbine has added <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/06/ddo-solo-play-now-available/">solo play</a> to <em>DDO</em>, and PvP is on the way. Which means more lifeless, formulaic quests for those gamers who prefer a little more depth to their adventures.<br /><br />A happy medium has been around for the past four years in the form of <em>Neverwinter Nights</em>. It supports dozens of party members and, while not quite massive, is considerably larger than a typical <em>Baldur's Gate</em> or <em>Diablo II</em> session. Skilled <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/08/nwn-mod-creator-on-atari-infinite-dungeons/">modders</a> have succeeded in prolonging <em>NWN</em> so successfully that BioWare has even hired some of them on -- maybe to work on the Canadian developer's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/03/13/bioware-open-austin-studio-for-new-mmo/">new MMORPG</a>.<br /><br />What are your thoughts on the current state of MMORPGs?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/12/rpg-missing-from-mmorpgs/">"RPG" missing from today's MMORPGs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 Jun 2006 17:00:00 EST. According to the company's web site, a "Solo" option is now available to players at the earliest levels, and dungeon difficulty is adjusted accordingly, although there are certain maps that still require team play. PvP functionality will also be added in the future.<br /><br />[via RPGPlanet]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/06/ddo-solo-play-now-available/">DDO solo play now available</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 06 Jun 2006 22:30:00 EST. D&amp;D aficionados can look forward to the addition of eight new monsters and the ability to create characters based on the popular Drow race of dark elves. However, the most significant enhancement is an improved single player experience, which was absent in the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/03/19/metareview-dungeons-and-dragons-online-stormreach/">core game</a>.<br /><br />Turbine head dungeon master Jeffrey Anderson said <em>DDO</em> subscribers can expect additional character levels and PvP battles in future modules. The game's first expansion, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/03/14/first-ddo-module-announced/">Dragon's Vault</a></em>, was free of charge, although no pricing information has been announced for <em>Twilight</em>.<br /><br />Check out GameSpot's updated <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/ddonline/screenindex.html">image gallery</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/11/ddo-adds-solo-play-in-new-expansion/">DDO adds solo play in new expansion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 11 May 2006 17:00:00 EST. Should you decide to buy the game after this period, you can
continue with your trial character. Many MMO enthusiasts have been hesitant to purchase <em>DDO</em> because it isn't
single player-friendly, and some initial reviews mentioned the difficulty in forming parties and keeping them together.
However, the game has been out for over a month now, and if you're looking for an alternative to your current MMO, it
might be worthwhile to give <em>DDO</em> a free spin.<br /><br />See also: <a
href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/03/19/metareview-dungeons-and-dragons-online-stormreach/">Metareview - <em>Dungeons
&amp; Dragons Online</em></a><br /><br />[via <a
href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=64029">Eurogamer</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/24/turbine-offers-free-ddo-trial/">Turbine offers free DDO trial</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 24 Apr 2006 11:15:00 EST.
