EA Canada recently detailed NHL 14's Collision Physics in a developer diary video and blog. New to the hockey game this year are left stick hits, where the speed and momentum of skaters can cause big hits without the use of the right joystick. Right stick hitting controls are still accessible in the game.

The Collision Physics system, which borrows from the FIFA series' Player Impact Engine, introduces more ragdoll reactions to players suffering hits, including the goalie. EA Canada says NHL 14 will also see less hip check spamming and more incidental contact due to the game demanding better player positioning. Likewise, the developer says the system will make better use of a player's individual attributes for keeping their balance and delivering hits on opponents.
Collision Physics takes the ice in NHL 14 trailer originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 04 May 2013 12:00:00 EST. Strange.

Not really - the final dev diary describes the historical accuracy of Assassin's Creed 3's main cities, positing that citizens of those areas today should get a creepy "I've been here before" feeling while wandering the digital streets. It also tackles the frontier and Connor's tree-running ability, along with epic naval battles. These are different than "navel" battles, bear in mind.
Assassin's Creed 3 developer diary tackles the land and sea originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 19 Sep 2012 16:30:00 EST. When they're not busy charging you with clubs and screaming, or taking aim with their bizarre future weapons, the denizens of the world of Rage are quite a cultured group of folks. Rather than allowing players to jump from car to car all willy nilly-like, Driver: San Francisco instead depends on a metric called "good will" to mete out the Matrix 2-esque action. So much of Rage's promotional materials have focused on the game's over-the-top weaponry, but the latest developer diary instead shows the environments you'll navigate while compulsively collecting said armaments. The Fable franchise has always prided itself on its clever, engrossing writing -- but even if the entirety of Fable 3's dialogue was written by baby rhesus monkeys, we're pretty sure the game's voice cast could make it sound incredible. The actors therein include seasoned VO veterans like Stephen Fry and Zoe Wanamaker, as well as relative newcomers Simon Pegg and Sir Ben Kingsley, who totally has an Oscar.
Check out these master thespians' thoughts on Lionhead's upcoming action-RPG in the developer diary posted after the jump. Make sure you stick around for Fry's inspiring advice at the end of the clip. She's certainly not lacking in the character department, with "character" being one of the two themes the clip focuses on, and "story" making up the other half -- even though she's only allowed a few short lines in welcoming "her boy" back home. We're hoping, however, for some good old-fashioned early 20th century maternal scolding as Vito dives deeper and deeper into the criminal underworld of 1940s slash '50s America. He's just doing what he's gotta do to get by, Ma!
Some of the footage features gadgets used to accomplish missions stealthily, but mostly it features guns and ammunition -- like phosphorus shells to set enemies aflame. Aside from the toys, the footage also gives us a better idea of what the gameplay looks like.
Looking more like a multiplayer map from Modern Warfare 2 than a sweet spot to bust some darkslides, we're anxious to see if the execution will be up to snuff. If so, it'll be among the most unique and diverse spots the series has to offer.

Aside from the quarry, the video above also provides a brief look at an industrial district, a new spillway and a new area dubbed <strike>3rd & Army</strike> <strike>1st & Air Force</strike> 2nd & Navy.
Latest Skate 3 dev diary shreds the industrial park, quarry originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 03 Feb 2010 19:40:00 EST. The emphasis here is on the game's many choices, and, more specifically, the one major choice which mirrors the movie's plot. Will you choose the path of the human and murder a tall blue alien ... thing, or stand up for all that is righteous and good in the world? The choice is yours (you monster!).
Airtight Games wants us to know there's more to like about the guy and aimed to make Will more in line with the typical Japanese game protagonist -- more believable and less of a "caricature."

The above video diary also shows us how Nikola Tesla ended up in the game. And how could we picture anything else after watching the latest developer diary for Assassin's Creed 2, where the game's main character is depicted as a card-carrying socialite.

So what if one of those groups happens to be full of vicious mercenaries? They'll help him learn how to fight! And sure, another group might be made up of "courtesans" (see: ladies of the night), but they'll teach him all about sneaking! And another group is full of ... well ... you get the gist, right? The game's handful of factions will assist Ezio as he murders his way through Renaissance Europe.

One final thing: even if you don't care about each group, make sure you stick around for the surprise treat nestled after the end splash screen. You'll thank us.

Gallery: Assassin's Creed II

Assassin's Creed 2's Ezio is a really popular guy originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 05 Nov 2009 02:31:00 EST. Sure, he'll be the same person -- but, as various members of the game's development team point out in this latest video diary, his repertoire of moves and the weapons / gear available to him will evolve the way you play as the character.

Considerably more time, though, is spent pointing out how all of this will make the game less repetitive, clearly meant to reaffirm that, yes, Ubisoft Montreal is addressing one of the chief criticisms of the first game. But, wow, do they try their best to work this fact into the script. Watching the video, we half expected creative director Patrice Desilets to claim that Ezio will be able to groom his facial hair in various ways, thus adding more variety to the game. Kidding (or is it?) aside, the game is looking absolutely fab, and we can't wait to play through it in a variety of ways when it hits next month.
Watch Ezio grow up in this Assassin's Creed 2 dev diary originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Oct 2009 17:30:00 EST. Most of it is interesting to those out there with an art degree, but we certainly got a giggle out of one of game's factions being inspired by 15th century art and "[Double Fine's] tremendous amount of research into the S&M scene." We wonder if those toys like "leather straps" and "ball gags" were brought into the office and purchased with the company credit card for "research" ... and whether Tim Shafer now keeps a dungeon for employee use?
However, it's good at showing some more of the gameplay we can expect from the on-rails shooter when it injects into retail on September 29th.

Some highlights include a look at a big tentacle boss, some of the "mini game" elements -- like building a barricade -- and a nice clear look at how stasis and strategic dismemberment will look. We enjoyed the time we spent with the game at E3 earlier this year, no doubt about it. However, the lofty claims various companies associated with the game have been making have us anxious to find out when we'll get to put it through its paces a bit more thoroughly.

More importantly, we'll finally find out what the "Shunt" power-up does. It focuses on the Lust circle of Hell, which looks to be comprised of walls and walls of bodies, as well as freaky contortions of what once passed for human beings. In the first of a series of developer diaries for Assassin's Creed 2, Ubisoft Montreal team members delve into the backstory of Ezio -- the game's newest assassin. Originally from a family of wealth and opportunity, Ezio is pushed into a vengeful quest when his family is threatened by people they once called friends. Set against the backdrop of a 15th Century Italy, Ezio continues the original title's story of exploring the bloodline of Desmond -- a man in the modern world forced to jump into the bloodied shoes of his ancestors through the use of a machine known as the Animus.

We're walking into Assassin's Creed 2 with a lot of questions (namely, will it stay fresh between assassinations?), but we're excited to find out the answers. Sadly, we may have to wait much longer than we anticipated for some of our queries to be addressed.

Gallery: Assassin's Creed II

Assassin's Creed 2 dev diary delves into the backstory of Ezio Auditore Da Firenze originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Jul 2009 18:00:00 EST. This, to us, is a good thing. And informed public is a good public. Also, we want to see stuff get all painted up.

This latest bit of media is an interview with Nick Hagger, the game's producer. He talks about the sinister corporation that's sucked all of the color out of Chroma City, the way Blob can acquire color and roll about, as well as his gang of cohorts. It's an insightful look at THQ's upcoming game and we suggest you check it out.

Producer talks about what to expect from de Blob originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 01 Jul 2008 13:15:00 EST. Hervé Sliwa, lead designer on Alone in the Dark, released a developer diary in which he gushes over the chance to work on one of his favorite games, and who could blame him? Whether or not you happen to like this particular title, the idea of being in his shoes -- and working on a new vision of something you love -- has to be exciting. In fact, the entire diary entry reads like a fanboy's dream come true; Sliwa swears he applied to Infogrames because of Alone in the Dark, because of the game's innovation and narrative. If nothing else, this gives us some hope about the remake. Sure, some may not welcome the level-skip function, and maybe everyone's not happy with the screenshots, but it certainly sounds as though the game is in good hands.

As far as actual information goes about development, this entry is a little on the light side. However, near the end, Sliwa does mention that the sight of Central Park at night inspired the project. The contrast between the brightly-lit city and a particularly dark patch in the park just struck a chord, and the first idea for the new game slithered forth from the depths of night. While we'd love to get some down and dirty details on the game, or perhaps a video or two, it's nice to see the beginning of the process, particularly when the mind behind it is so enthusiastic. It's contagious, as well; in honor of Sliwa's excitement, we tracked down some new artwork and Wii-specific screens, and have tucked them into the gallery below, along with the older shots.

Alone in the Dark developer dishes delightedly originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 12 Mar 2008 12:45:00 EST.
