"Heavy discounts are bad for gamers," Rambourg told Rock, Paper, Shotgun. "If a gamer buys a game he or she doesn't want just because it's on sale, they're being trained to make bad purchases, and they're also learning that games aren't valuable." The all-too-common phenomenon of spending more money than you want to just to get everything that's on sale in a particular week is "not good for anyone," he said.

If, like us, you wonder at this point how this attitude squares with GOG's own weekend sales, Rambourg explained: "Our average sale tends to be around 40% - 50% off; that's plenty of incentive to pick up a game if you're interested or if you just think you might like to try it because you're not sure about the game, but not some crazy 75% or 85% discount that damages the long-term value of a game." Of course, if you want to get extremely technical about it, the majority of GOG's business is selling $6 versions of games that cost upward of $50 when they originally came out (twenty years ago).

We've just learned of some sad and all out depressing news coming from Circuit City. It was just revealed that all of the remaining 567 U.S. stores will be closing and all of the company's 30,000+ employees are expected to be jobless after Circuit City was unable to find a buyer after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last November. Major bummer ...

The silver lining to this corporate travesty is that all Circuit City stores will be liquidating merchandise including (of course) Xbox 360 hardware and software. The liquidation could start as soon as this Saturday, January 17th, pending court approval. They may not have been the best electronics retailer, but we still loved our Circuit City and their free gift cards. What a craptacular economy.

Posted over on Oxidative's Picasa album is a printable $10 off ANY Xbox 360 game coupon for Target stores, with an expiration date of June 9th. And it doesn't restrict the savings to only regular priced items! The only wrinkle to this $10 savings is that the coupon specifically states that it's "Void if copied", but we've been informed that Target is really good about accepting most any printed coupons. That said, in our interest of not be blamed for anything, we're slapping a fat YMMV tag on this offer. It's worth a shot though, so print, shop and possibly save $10 on your next game purchase.

Update: Seems like Wal-mart has either caught on to the pricing problem or games are selling out, because certain pre-orders are coming up as "Product Not Found!" errors. Though, some games are still available. Pre-order what you can, it's an online shopping frenzy!

Hurry fanboys! Walmart.com is either starting a new video game pre-order pricing policy or is having some serious pricing issues. Either way, everyone wins! Make like an antelope in heat (whatever that means?) over to Walmart.com's upcoming 360 games list. Once there, you can pre-order most upcoming 360 games for $20-$40 off of retail! We're for serious! Deals like getting Condemned 2 and Dark Sector for $19.82, Frontlines Fuel of War, Turok and LOST for $29.82 or The Club, Army of Two, Burnout Paradise and Devil May Cry 4 for $39.82. Again, these are pre-orders for the games and we have no idea why these are so cheap or if Wal-mart will even honor the prices. As if language barriers aren't enough to dissuade would-be importers from ordering Japan-only games, the pricing on these titles often border on lunacy when compared to what new releases usually cost in the states. So while Play Asia's Jump! Ultimate Stars sale for $29.90 might not seem like much of a bargain, keep in mind that the online fighter usually sells for a staggering $48.90.

It's a great game though; many have even compared it to the Super Smash Bros. series, except in 2D and with twenty hojillion playable manga characters. Since Play-Asia will be honoring the reduced price until next Monday, that gives you plenty of time to consider whether or not this discount is deep enough to warrant a purchase. We think that it is!

Chocobo Tales, Square Enix's Final Fantasy spinoff, made for a great release to pass the Spring months with, but it can be hard for a minigame-filled RPG to elbow its way to the front of a crowd filled with must-have DS titles. If you haven't had a chance to pick up Chocobo Tales yet, maybe Amazon's latest sale will be what finally motivates you. The online shop has slashed $10 off of the game's usual cost, bringing it down to a budget price of $19.99. This bargain ends today though, so quit being lazy about buying it!

Online import shop Play Asia is trying to lighten its stock of mega-robot guys, hosting a week-long sale on RockMan 3 Zero. Capcom's GBA action-platformer has been discounted to $9.90, almost a fifth of its original price! RockMan 2 Zero boasts a similar discount as a limited time offer, but you get an additional dollar off if you bundle the two games together for your order, bringing the total cost to $18.80.

And in case you've already forgotten, Renchi has also marked a number of its DS import titles down to $9.99, one of them being RockMan ZX! Geologists, rejoice!
