<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-cave">The Cave</a></em>, Double Fine's latest adventure game, is heading to iOS, <a href="http://www.touchgen.net/e3-the-cave-for-ipad-hands-on">Touchgen</a> reports, citing a hands-on preview at E3 last week. Sega published <em>The Cave</em> on PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U in January, but clearly <em>that's not enough</em>, and the game is due out this summer on iOS.<br />
<br />
<em>The Cave</em> on iOS doesn't have virtual analog sticks or buttons, but allows the player to tap and drag characters around the map, and choose characters with a poke on their respective icons along the bottom of the screen, the hands-on report notes.<br />
<br />
<em>The Cave</em> features seven characters with murky morals and, at times, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/29/the-cave-review/#review">even murkier gameplay</a>, we found. There's no word on how much the iOS version will cost, but the price shouldn't be any steeper than the walls of that deep, dark, sentient cave.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/17/the-cave-drops-in-on-ios-this-summer/">The Cave drops in on iOS this summer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 Jun 2013 19:30:00 EST. <br />
Double Fine is using a second (and already successful) Kickstarter to produce "<a href="http://joystiq.com/game/massive-chalice">Massive Chalice</a>," an ambitious turn-based strategy game that hinges on the lineage of your kingdom. Project lead Brad Muir is candid about the early delta between the game's promises - allowing you to produce and raise multiple generations of heroes in a war against demons - and the reality anticipated by those committed to its crowdfunding drive, which exists independently of that for <em>Broken Age</em>.<br />
<br />
"We're gonna mess up in public, and that's a little bit scary, but it's also like - I think it helps build trust too," Muir told me during E3 last week. "We're totally fallible, and we're gonna trip up, but we'll figure it out and we're gonna make the game the best game it can be."<br />
<br />
Muir also responded to fears from backers who have yet to see the fruition of Double Fine's previous Kickstarter project, <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/broken-age"><em>Broken Age</em></a>, and expressed enthusiasm over developing a game with "the doors wide open on the studio."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/17/brad-muir-on-building-trust-with-double-fines-massive-chalice/">Brad Muir on building trust with Double Fine's Massive Chalice</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 Jun 2013 19:05:00 EST. Indie Fund is funding two original projects with Double Fine. The news was announced during the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/horizon-2013">Horizon conference</a> by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/indie-fund">Indie Fund's</a> <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/kellee-santiago">Kellee Santiago</a> and Double Fine producer Greg Rice. Santiago didn't offer any additional details, saying only that there would be more revealed in "the coming months."<br />
<br />
Double Fine is currently very busy, working on two Kickstarted games - <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/broken-age"><em>Broken Age</em></a> and <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/massive-chalice"><em>Massive Chalice</em></a> - the music game <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/dropchord">DropChord</a> and now two <em>more </em>games with Indie Fund.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/13/two-double-fine-projects-being-funded-by-indie-fund/">Two new Double Fine projects being funded by Indie Fund</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 13 Jun 2013 14:32:00 EST. Double Fine's crowdfunded strategy-RPG <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/massive-chalice/"><i>Massive Chalice</i></a> will include same-sex relationships and marriage as part of its generation-based gameplay, developer Brad Muir revealed while talking with <a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/06/06/how-kickstarter-got-gay-marriage-into-massive-chalice/">Rock Paper Shotgun</a>.<br />
<br />
Muir notes that feedback from Kickstarter backers inspired his team's decision to include same-sex options. "We did not talk about [the possibility of gay marriage] until we launched the Kickstarter," he told RPS. "We were so focused on pure pragmatic mechanics and how it would work and coupling and all these things that we hadn't [considered it]."<br />
<br />
"One of the cool things is we have the opportunity to think about it and address it because we brought it to the community," Muir continued. "We brought it to a broader group of people, and then there were some people who brought it up and wanted to talk about it. There's a raging thread on our forums."<br />
<br />
Muir previously expressed a desire to have an equality between sexes in <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=5xC6FZbvk0s">this video</a> discussing <i>Massive Chalice</i>'s design. "We wanted to make [gameplay] sex-agnostic," Muir said. "[Both sexes are] both going to be super-badass on the battlefield, killing demons together."<br />
<br />
Muir notes that same-sex gameplay aspects may have never been considered, had Double Fine opted for traditional publisher-driven development. "We might just overlook something like same-sex coupling all the way until we announce the game." he told RPS. "If somebody did think about it during that whole thing, they would've probably just killed it because it is such a controversial issue. They'd probably not want to have it associated with the game at all."<br />
<br />
<i>Massive Chalice</i> met its funding goal <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/04/double-fines-massive-chalice-brims-with-achieved-funding/">earlier this month</a>, and its Kickstarter campaign will conclude on June 27.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/07/double-fines-massive-chalice-to-feature-same-sex-relationships/">Double Fine's Massive Chalice to feature same-sex relationships</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 07 Jun 2013 17:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/30/double-fine-kickstarts-pc-strategy-game-massive-chalice/"><em>Massive Chalice</em></a> achieved its <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/doublefine/double-fines-massive-chalice">Kickstarter</a> goal today, goblet-ing up $725,000 of funding in just five days. While Double Fine's second Kickstarter game hasn't lit the touchpaper <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/09/double-fine-kickstarter-passes-1-million-in-under-24-hours-bre/">like its first one</a>, <em>Massive Chalice</em> found almost 20,000 backers to get it funded with 23 days left.<br />
<br />
That means Double Fine will bring the fantasy turn-based strategy game to Windows, Mac, and Linux. According to the Kickstarter Page, Double Fine is targeting to release it by September 2014. The studio has plans for stretch goals, but hasn't announced any yet.<br />
<br />
The game itself is headed up by <em>Iron Brigade</em> creator Brad Muir, and sees players employ a number of heroes across a campaign that spans generations, with permadeath "inevitable" due to age. Double Fine says <em>Massive Chalice</em> is "built for replayability," Each playthrough features a random selection of heroes, and its intricacies will change depending on player decisions and the "whims of fate."<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, work continues on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/broken-age"><em>Broken Age</em></a>, the studio's first Kickstarter game. Double Fine says a separate internal team will be working on <em>Massive Chalice</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/04/double-fines-massive-chalice-brims-with-achieved-funding/">Double Fine's Massive Chalice brims with achieved funding</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 04 Jun 2013 06:00:00 EST. <br />
Double Fine has launched a Kickstarter project for <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/doublefine/double-fines-massive-chalice"><i>Massive Chalice</i></a>, a feudal fantasy-themed tactical strategy game for Windows, Mac, and Linux.<br />
<br />
Headed up by <i>Iron Brigade</i> creator Brad Muir, <i>Massive Chalice</i> boasts a multi-generational single-player campaign in which heroes grow old and die as the story progresses. Taking inspiration from roguelikes, <i>Massive Chalice</i> procedurally generates unique characters and alliances during each playthrough, and permadeath ensures that player choices have weight and impact.<br />
<br />
Double Fine's Tim Schafer assures that work continues on the developer's previous Kickstarter success story, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/broken-age"><i>Broken Age</i></a>, but notes that a separate internal team can begin work on <i>Massive Chalice</i> once it's successfully funded. <i>Massive Chalice</i>'s funding goal is set at $725,000.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/30/double-fine-kickstarts-pc-strategy-game-massive-chalice/">Double Fine Kickstarts PC strategy game Massive Chalice</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 30 May 2013 13:36:00 EST. <br />
The Humble Double Fine Bundle has crammed in eight more games today, a collection of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/26/double-fines-amnesia-fortnight-game-design-jams-saved-the-com/">Double Fine Amnesia Fortnight</a> prototypes - the results of annual internal gamejams at Double Fine. All eight games are Windows PC only, available to all who plunk down more than the average $8.15 (at time of this writing) for the Humble Double Fine Bundle.<br />
<br />
The Amnesia Fortnight prototypes include: <em>Autonomous</em>, a first-person sandbox game set in the future; <em>Spacebase DF-9</em>, a top-down simulation where you construct and maintain a space station; Black Lake, an adventure game set in a dark forest; <em>The White Birch</em> is a 3D puzzle-platformer set in a massive tower; <em>Brazen</em> is a co-op action game where four players team up to take on monsters; and <em>Hack-n-Slash</em> is a <em>Legend of Zelda</em>-inspired 2D action-adventure game.<br />
<br />
<em>Happy Night</em>, a prototype from 2007 and the precursor to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/sesame-street-once-upon-a-monster"><em>Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster</em></a>, is also here, as is 2009 prototype <em>Costume Quest</em>, which eventually became, well, <em>Costume Quest</em>. Finally, there's the 2 Player Productions' documentary compiled during Double Fine's Amnesia Fortnight event in 2012.<br />

The Humble Double Fine Bundle was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/07/humble-double-fine-bundle-offers-pre-order-for-broken-age/">introduced last week</a>, as an initial collection of the studio's most recent works: <em>Psychonauts</em>, <em>Stacking</em>, <em>Costume Quest</em>, <em>Brutal Legend</em> and a pre-order for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/broken-age"><em>Broken Age</em></a>, the studio's Kickstarter-funded adventure game. The Humble Double Fine Bundle comes to a close in six days.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/14/humble-double-fine-bundle-adds-amnesia-fortnight-prototypes/">Humble Double Fine Bundle adds Amnesia Fortnight prototypes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 May 2013 20:15:00 EST. Double Fine wants to tie up all of the loose ends within its catalog and is seeking the distribution rights to its games formerly published by THQ, <em>Stacking</em> and <em>Costume Quest</em>. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/23/nordic-games-involved-with-thq-since-january-is-talking-sequels/">Nordic Games</a> picked up the distribution rights to these games during <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/22/thq-auction-darksiders-red-faction-homeworld/">THQ's bankruptcy auction</a> in April, though Double Fine attempted to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/28/double-fine-trying-to-get-costume-quest-stacking-ip-back-from-t/">secure the rights</a> from THQ as early as February.<br />
<br />
Double Fine owns the intellectual properties for <em>Stacking</em> and <em>Costume Quest</em>, so if it wants to make new games within each series, it can.<br />
<br />
"We're still trying to get the rights to <em>Costume Quest</em> and <em>Stacking</em>," Schafer told <a href="http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2013/05/12/tim-schafer-on-stacking-costume-quest-brutal-legend-and-iron-brigade-were-still-trying-to-get-the-rights.aspx">Game Informer</a>. "We can still make more of those games. We still have the IP, but we'd love to have all of the IP and distribution rights in house."<br />
<br />
On top of those distribution rights, Double Fine wants to regain the <em>Brutal Legend</em> IP from EA and the <em>Iron Brigade</em> IP from Microsoft, Schafer said. These are difficult positions for Double Fine, but for us, deciding which war to watch is just as hard: Battle of Heavy Metal and Mechs or the Battle of Kids in Costumes Playing with Toys From the Old Country. Decisions, decisions.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/12/double-fine-wants-to-win-back-stacking-costume-quest-rights/">Double Fine wants to win back Stacking, Costume Quest rights</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 12 May 2013 15:00:00 EST. <br />
The <a href="https://www.humblebundle.com/">latest Humble Bundle</a> is all about Double Fine and it includes a pre-order for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/broken-age/"><em>Broken Age</em></a>, the game formerly known as <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/double-fine-adventure">Double Fine Adventure</a> </em>on Kickstarter. To secure a pre-order for <em>Broken Age </em>on Steam (PC, Mac and Linux), pay $35 or more.<br />
<br />
This price will easily net buyers the "pay what you want" games - <em>Costume Quest, Psychonauts</em> and <em>Stacking</em> - and at the moment grabs the "pay more than the average" game, <em>Brutal Legend</em>. Since Double Fine saw <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/13/double-fine-adventure-kickstarter-concludes-with-3-335-265-amas/">such success</a> with tiered payments in the past, there's one more option: Pay $70 or more to get all those games and a Double Fine Bundle t-shirt in black or cream.<br />
<br />
As always, Humble Bundle payments can be allotted among Humble Bundle itself, Double Fine, and charities Child's Play and the Electronic Frontier Foundation. The Humble Double Fine bundle will be available for two weeks, with the clock starting today, May 7.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/07/humble-double-fine-bundle-offers-pre-order-for-broken-age/">Humble Double Fine Bundle offers pre-order for Broken Age</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 May 2013 14:30:00 EST. The Complete Edition, stock game and DLC bundle - which includes a couple extra outfits and cases - have all been discounted by 75%, down to $7.50, $5 and $2.99, respectively.<br /><br />The Rockstar Hits Collection is also on sale for $29.99. It's a Steam bundle that includes <em>GTA IV </em>and its <em>Episodes from Liberty City expansion</em>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/max-payne-3"><em>Max Payne 3</em></a>, and <em>LA Noire. </em>Pretty much every other Rockstar game on Steam right now is also on sale to varying degrees.<br /><br />Recent PC arrival <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/brutal-legend"><em>Brutal Legend</em></a> joins the salesapalooza by slashing its price in half, down to $10 for the weekend starting now; if you want to pick up the soundtrack with the game, that'll be $12.49. Creator Tim Schafer of Double Fine Productions has stated he would "love" to revisit the game and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/24/schafer-would-love-more-brutal-legend-content-on-pc/">add more stuff</a> if the PC version does well.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/25/rockstar-daily-deals-cheap-brutal-legend-highlight-steam-weeken/">Rockstar daily deals, cheap Brutal Legend highlight Steam weekend</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 25 Apr 2013 16:30:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.brokenagegame.com/">website</a> for the game is now live, offering art and plot information to the rest of us outside of the privileged Kickstarter class.<br /><br />"Broken Age is a point-and-click adventure telling the stories of a young boy and girl leading parallel lives," the website explains. "The girl has been chosen by her village to be sacrificed to a terrible monster--but she decides to fight back. Meanwhile, a boy on a spaceship is living a solitary life under the care of a motherly computer, but he wants to break free to lead adventures and do good in the world. Adventures ensue."<br /><br />Pre-orders are still available on the site, and provide access to the backer-only forums, as well as all past and future episodes of the documentary series about Broken Age's development, by 2 Player Productions.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/24/double-fine-adventure-unveiled-as-broken-age/">Double Fine Adventure unveiled as 'Broken Age'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 24 Mar 2013 12:20:00 EST. The developer is bringing 3.5 inch floppy disks to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pax-east-2013">PAX East</a> housing copies of <em>Capy Fine Racing GP</em> - a new racing game featuring characters from games created by Capy and Double Fine.<br /><br />Capy co-founder Nathan Vella told <a href="http://www.edge-online.com/news/capy-fine-racing-gp-to-debut-at-pax-east/">Edge</a> that both developers teamed up to create the game, which seems like an excellent offering for the two studio sharing booth space in Boston. The game itself is described as an "OutRun-style racer."<br /><br />If you won't be at PAX, the floppy disk will also be included in the 200 retail versions of the <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/sub/26308/">Double Fine/Capybara Games Steam collection</a>. Those that get hands on the disks are encouraged to share.<br /><br />"It's just something we did for pure fun and loving the idea of doing cool shit with our friends, in the spirit of the Capy Double Fine PAX combo. While it's totally a real game, it's also not at all a real game," Vella said.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/21/capy-fine-racing-gp-is-a-game-on-a-floppy-disk-at-pax-east/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Capy Fine Racing GP is a game on a floppy disk at PAX East</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/21/capy-fine-racing-gp-is-a-game-on-a-floppy-disk-at-pax-east/">Capy Fine Racing GP is a game on a floppy disk at PAX East</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 Mar 2013 23:00:00 EST. In a post on his blog, Gilbert profusely thanked his former colleagues and studio founder Tim Schafer, saying it was a "true pleasure to work with every one of them," and simply that it was time to move on.<br /><br />Schafer and Gilbert, who co-wrote <em>The Secret of Monkey Island</em> and <em>Monkey Island 2</em>, reprised their working relationship in 2010 when <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/27/ron-gilbert-reunites-with-tim-schafer-at-double-fine/">Gilbert joined Double Fine Productions</a>. After two years of toil, Gilbert released the literally full-of-junk <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-cave"><em>The Cave</em></a> earlier this year.<br /><br />Gilbert's short-term plan is to continue working with <em>DeathSpank</em> co-creator Clayton Kauzlaric on an iOS game, which he revealed has the catchy moniker of <em>Scurvy Scallywags in The Voyage to Discover the Ultimate Sea Shanty: A Musical Match-3 Pirate RPG - </em>the man does like his pirates<em>. </em>But clearly Gilbert has intentions beyond that, with the 49-year-old arbiter of adventure pointedly noting there are "so many games left to be designed."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/12/ron-gilbert-leaves-double-fine-productions/">Ron Gilbert leaves Double Fine Productions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 Mar 2013 07:00:00 EST. A playable build will be on-hand at PAX East later this month.<br /><br /><em>Dropchord</em> will ship this year on Mac OS X, Windows PC and iOS devices, and it'll be available first in Leap Motion's Airspace app store. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dropchord/">Dropchord</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dropchord/#5696579"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/dropchord-screen1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dropchord/#5696580"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/dropchord-screen2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dropchord/#5696581"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/dropchord-screen3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/07/double-fine-dips-back-into-music-with-dropchord/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Double Fine dips back into music with Dropchord</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/07/double-fine-dips-back-into-music-with-dropchord/">Double Fine dips back into music with Dropchord</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 07 Mar 2013 20:00:00 EST. Those games are among the properties being sold off in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/26/darksiders-homeworld-red-faction-and-other-ips-next-on-thq-auc/">THQ's latest auction</a> - however, they're being sold as a bundle with dozens of other properties. Officially, they can't be sold outside of the lot, but Double Fine is hopeful.<br /><br />"THQ retained limited distribution rights that we bid on during the previous process to reclaim them prior to their expiration," Justin Bailey, VP of business development, told <a href="http://www.polygon.com/2013/2/27/4037132/double-fine-optimistic-about-regaining-rights-to-costume-quest-and">Polygon</a>. "We are optimistic about regaining these distribution rights, as this process has already demonstrated that when there are parties interested in specific assets, those assets are worth more when sold separately." Double Fine has yet to hear back from THQ about any potential deals.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/28/double-fine-trying-to-get-costume-quest-stacking-ip-back-from-t/">Double Fine trying to get Costume Quest, Stacking IP back from THQ</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 28 Feb 2013 14:30:00 EST. Double Fine's heavy metal action-adventure <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/brutal-legend">Brutal Legend</a></em> is available now on Steam. The rock epic is a mere $20, and Double Fine founder Tim Schafer has says he'd be open to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/24/schafer-would-love-more-brutal-legend-content-on-pc/">add more modes, tweaks and content</a>. However, Double Fine is busy with a couple other projects, including its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/08/kickstarter-game-projects-earn-83-million-in-2012/">record-breaking Kickstarter-funded</a> adventure game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/26/psa-brutal-legend-rockin-steam/">PSA: Brutal Legend rockin' Steam</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 26 Feb 2013 17:30:00 EST. "I mean, we have a wishlist from when we made this version. But since we are a small developer publishing it ourselves, we have to go with the best version we can make and then hope it's successful so we can add more."<br /><br />Schafer mentioned a few specifics he would like to see in <em>Br</em><em>&uuml;</em><em>tal Legend</em>, such as alternate game modes in multiplayer, new playable factions, updates to the current unit feedback system and an advanced mode featuring traditional RTS-style controls. He didn't see any singleplayer updates or sequels in <em>Br</em><em>&uuml;</em><em>tal </em><em>Legend</em>'s future, since those tended to be more expensive and expansive.<br /><br />A <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/05/notch-no-longer-involved-in-psychonauts-2-funding/">sequel to <em>Psychonauts</em></a>, for example, would probably be cheaper than one for <em>Br</em><em>&uuml;</em><em>tal</em><em> Legend</em>, considering the cost of music licensing, Schafer said.<br /><br />"I mean, it's been longer since <em>Psychonauts </em>and we wouldn't have to do any music licensing," he said. "So we could probably afford to do it more if we got some funding. I feel like a <em>Br</em><em>&uuml;</em><em>tal </em>sequel would cost twice as much as <em>Psychonauts</em>. It's easier to imagine Double Fine doing a sequel to <em>Psychonauts</em>. But for creative reasons, there's no preference of one over the other."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/24/schafer-would-love-more-brutal-legend-content-on-pc/">Schafer would 'love' more Brutal Legend content on PC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 24 Feb 2013 21:00:00 EST. Oh, and because it's a game on Steam, you get a couple of <em>Team Fortress 2</em> items.<br /><br />Double Fine is also taking pre-orders on <em>The Art of Br&uuml;tal Legend</em>, a hardcover, 252-page art book. Books pre-ordered from Double Fine's shop will be signed by Tim Schafer, though hats will not be included.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/13/you-axed-for-it-brutal-legend-on-steam-feb-26/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>You axed for it: Brutal Legend on Steam Feb. 26</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/13/you-axed-for-it-brutal-legend-on-steam-feb-26/">You axed for it: Brutal Legend on Steam Feb. 26</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 13 Feb 2013 16:30:00 EST. And yet, you can buy those prototypes in a fancy boxed set even before the games exist!<br /><br />The new $30 collection includes the five games from the most recent Fortnight: <em>Autonomous, Black Lake, Hack 'n' Slash, Spacebase DF-9</em>, and <em>The White Birch</em>, along with the documentary about the event by 2 Player Productions. Also included are the prototype versions of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/24/double-fine-adds-brazen-prototype-to-amnesia-fortnight-rewards/">Brazen</a>, Costume Quest, and Happy Song,</em> and an original soundtrack. For $70, you can get the boxed set and signed covers for all five games. Or, if you want zero boxes instead of many, you can download the set for $9.99.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/01/double-fines-amnesia-fortnight-prototypes-collected-in-boxset/">Double Fine's Amnesia Fortnight prototypes collected in boxset</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Feb 2013 11:45:00 EST. It's littered with puzzles and pieces of junk destined to become the only objects in the world worth having. The cave itself is a sentient, subterranean narrator, enveloping seven different explorers in a patchwork of dream-like environments that not only pertain to them, but contain the kind of contorted contexts in which a femur and a parrot are essential parts of progress.<br /><br />Those are all signs of the classic adventure, tinged with the incongruous vending machines, gift shops and eternally stranded island hermits you expect from a <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/ron-gilbert">Ron Gilbert</a> game. But there's something else inside <em>The Cave</em>, a familiar cynicism and cleverness that gradually emerges as each spelunker hits rock bottom. These people - even the monk and the chivalrous knight - are egotistical, unpleasant kleptomaniacs, and you're one of them.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-cave-9-4-12/">The Cave (9/4/12)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-cave-9-4-12/#5257652"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/09/thecave-9.4.12-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-cave-9-4-12/#5257653"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/09/thecave-9.4.12-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-cave-9-4-12/#5257654"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/09/thecave-9.4.12-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-cave-9-4-12/#5257655"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/09/thecave-9.4.12-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-cave-9-4-12/#5257656"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/09/thecave-9.4.12-05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/29/the-cave-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Cave review: Seven spelunkers, none decent</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/29/the-cave-review/">The Cave review: Seven spelunkers, none decent</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 29 Jan 2013 10:00:00 EST. The XBLA and Steam versions will follow one day later. "Plus ... Mac and Linux on Steam Play!!" Gilbert noted, which means the Steam release will not be PC only.<br /><br /><em>The Cave</em> puts player-chosen three-character parties into a strange, animate cave that speaks as you explore it. We assume solving the mysteries within isn't as simple as just asking the cave what its deal is.<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: Sega <a href="http://blogs.sega.com/2013/01/15/sega-announces-launch-date-and-price-for-the-cave/">confirmed</a> the dates Gilbert announced, along with some prices. <em>The Cave</em> has an admission fee of $14.99 on PSN, Wii U's eShop, and Steam, and 1200 MSP on XBLM.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/15/the-cave-welcomes-visitors-beginning-jan-22-and-23/">The Cave welcomes visitors beginning Jan. 22 [update: prices]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 15 Jan 2013 11:30:00 EST. It's the drive that initiated "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/07/kickstarter-declares-2012-the-year-of-the-game/">The Year of the Game</a>," a year where some of the biggest and most successful <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/31/events-2012-kickstarter/">Kickstarter</a> campaigns were attached to video game projects. In a 2012 retrospective post, Kickstarter reveals a total of $83 million was earned for video games through successful Kickstarter drives, the most out of any category on the crowd-funding website.<br /><br />A total of 2,796 video game projects asked for funding on Kickstarter in 2012; 911 projects successfully reached goal thanks to 561,574 backers. Compared to the stats found in other categories last year (we're looking at you, Dance!), it's difficult to argue against 2012 truly being "The Year of the Game" on Kickstarter.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/08/kickstarter-game-projects-earn-83-million-in-2012/">Kickstarter game projects earn $83 million in 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Jan 2013 21:00:00 EST. At a demo event last week, I spoke with Double Fine's Chris Remo and got our first glimpse at <em>The Cave</em> on Wii U.<br /><br />Above, you can see how the WiiPad plays into the game. It's essentially a glorified character selector and camera controller - by tapping on a character, you'll jump to them; by tapping on a character twice, you can switch the camera focus to them. In <em>The Cave</em>, characters cannot move independently off-screen.<br /><br />"So other than that, it pretty much plays like all the other versions," Double Fine's Remo told me. "We did work really hard to ensure that visually everything you're seeing is identical to the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, so there's no downscaling, there's nothing going on that is not up to par with the other next-gen systems. There's nothing super wacky going on, but it's a completely full-featured version of the game."<br /><br /><em>The Cave</em> launches on Wii U next year.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/17/the-cave-on-wii-u-uses-gamepad-for-camera-and-character-switchin/">The Cave on Wii U uses GamePad for camera and character switching</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 Dec 2012 14:15:00 EST. An incomplete version of Double Fine's iOS game accidentally slipped onto the App Store back in September, with the developer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/09/middle-manager-of-justices-accidental-launch-becomes-beta-test/">taking advantage</a> of the gaffe by turning it into an impromptu beta test. However, this morning's launch is 100 percent deliberate.<br /><br />As <a href="http://toucharcade.com/2012/12/04/middle-manager-of-justice-hits-canadian-app-store-again-will-see-wide-release-soon/">Touch Arcade</a> reports, this time a more careful approach saw the strategy sim first arrive on the Canadian App Store last week. It seems like our friends in the Great White North are getting a few things <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/27/wii-mini-listed-by-best-buy-canada-coming-dec-7-according-to/">ahead of everyone else</a> these days.<br /><br />As for the game itself, it sits somewhere between the worlds of <em>Dilbert</em> and <em>The Incredibles</em>. Taking on the position of middle manager at Justice Corp's newest branch, you'll have to keep a team of superheroes in check by organizing training, requisitioning facilities, and upgrading equipment, all while maintaining a superheroic level of efficiency.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/13/middle-manager-of-justice-actioned-for-free-acquirement-for-rea/">Middle Manager of Justice actioned for free acquisition, for reals this time</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 13 Dec 2012 12:45:00 EST. Designed by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/iron-brigade"><em>Iron Brigade</em></a> project lead Brad Muir, <em>Brazen</em> is a <em>Monster Hunter</em>-style four-player online co-op homage to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Harryhausen">Ray Harryhausen</a>, whose revolutionary work in the field of claymation helped define an era of movie monsters. <br /><br />Players choose between three classes (Stalwart, Waracle or Beerzerker) and join forces to slay retro mythological beasts, such as the massive two-headed snapping turtle/scorpion seen in the trailer above. Personally, we're still keeping our fingers crossed for some unsettling, disturbingly animated skeleton warriors. <p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/24/double-fine-adds-brazen-prototype-to-amnesia-fortnight-rewards/">Double Fine adds 'Brazen' prototype to Amnesia Fortnight rewards</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 24 Nov 2012 15:00:00 EST. For the latest iteration of the internal game jam, the company has opened up the process to you!<br /><br />No, you don't get to make prototypes for Double Fine games. Instead, you can put your money towards a vote on <a href="http://www.humblebundle.com/double-fine">23 different ideas</a>, in order to pick the four that will be made into prototypes by the studio. The voting process is hosted by the Humble Bundle, and the money goes to Double Fine, Child's Play, or the Humble Organizers, in a proportion of your choice.<br /><br />Contributors will get the finished prototypes when they, you know, exist, and they'll get downloadable prototypes of <em>Costume Quest</em> and <em>Happy Song</em> (which eventually became Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster) now.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/19/double-fine-game-ideas-compete-for-your-dollars-in-amnesia-fortn/">Double Fine game ideas compete for your dollars in Amnesia Fortnight</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 Nov 2012 15:21:00 EST. Double Fine pulled it quickly, but not before potential players <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/05/middle-manager-of-justice-approved-for-free-ios-procuration/">caught wind</a> and downloaded it. Lead developer Kee Chi explains to Gamasutra how this all went down, and why it's not so bad in the end.<br /><br />"Yeah, it was totally my fault," Chi says. "With the way you submit things on the App Store, you have to specify what the release date is, and a while back we had set the date to September, but at the time we didn't know if that would be final or not.<br /><br />"Once we submitted the game, we realized we had a lot of things we still needed to tweak and fix, but at the same time, we didn't want to remove it from the [submission] process in case Apple catches other things we need to take care of, and we didn't want to do a double submission."<br /><br />Chi's tech director called him on his way to work last week, saying <em>Middle Manager </em>was live in every territory. It appears Apple took that September release window to heart. "I just went 'What?'" Chi recalls. "At Double Fine, we pride ourselves on putting a solid product out there, so having something out there that was buggy and not quite ready yet was really frustrating."<br /><br />This is Double Fine's first foray into full-on mobile gaming and it anticipated surprises. Chi and Double Fine decided to turn these accidental players into beta testers, reaching out on <a href="http://www.doublefine.com/forums/viewthread/7618/">various</a> <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=41783803&amp;postcount=93">forums</a> to encourage feedback.<br /><br />"I guess it kind of just turned into a beta test," Chi says. "I mean, if people find bugs that we haven't found internally, I'd love to know about them so I can fix them."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/09/middle-manager-of-justices-accidental-launch-becomes-beta-test/">Middle Manager of Justice's accidental launch becomes beta test</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 09 Sep 2012 21:00:00 EST. In a post entitled "The Year of the Game," the crowd funding site reveals that games have gone from the eighth most-funded category in the site's three-year history to the second.<br /><br />This year has seen over $50 million pledged toward game projects on the site, with film and design several million behind at $42 million and $40 million, respectively. In 2011, games only had $3.6 million in funding and in 2010 it was at a mere $519,885.<br /><br />The great change began in February, when <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/double-fine-adventure">Double Fine Adventure</a> surpassed a million dollars in 24 hours and concluded with $3.3 million pledged. The most recent game to surpass a million was Uber Entertainment's <em><a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/659943965/planetary-annihilation-a-next-generation-rts?ref=live">Planetary Annihilation</a></em>.
