<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/jim-ward">Jim Ward</a> is best known for being the no-nonsense president of LucasArts from 2004 to 2008 -- a period where the company seemed to dust itself off, and start making good games again. His claim to fame might change in the near future, however -- <a href="http://www.votejimward.com/jim-ward/">he's currently running</a> to represent Arizona's 5th District in the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2010 Congressional Election.<br /><br />Ward's fairly conservative viewpoints are evident in <a href="http://www.votejimward.com/jim-ward/">his campaign website</a>, but regardless of how you feel about his policies, he's got to be a staunch supporter of the gaming industry. Plus, he might just be the only person who can push legislation through mandating the re-release of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/day-of-the-tentacle"><em>Day of the Tentacle</em></a>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamepolitics.com/2009/08/15/former-lucasarts-ceo-launches-bid-seat-congress">GamePolitics</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/15/former-lucasarts-president-making-congressional-bid/">Former LucasArts president making Congressional bid</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 15 Aug 2009 12:30:00 EST. Data Design Interactive, the folks responsible for such titles as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/01/uk-public-hungry-for-cookie-games/"><em>Ninjabread Man</em></a> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/target-terror-anubis-ii-prices-slashed-to-reflect-quality/">Anubis II</a></em>, decided they needed to make a gesture in honor of the election, and what better to do than use their <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/11/wii-warm-up-duyu-nuyu/">NotMiis</a> to represent a golftastic throwdown between President-Elect Barack Obama and his former opponent, John McCain? What does an Obama presidency mean for video games? <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3171125">1UP</a> asks the question in a lengthy analysis of Obama's relationship to gaming culture.<br /><br />Obama first entered our scene in December 2007 with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/13/presidential-candidates-talk-video-game-violence/">comments</a> presented to Common Sense Media on the topic of game violence legislation on his way to being <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/31/yahoo-details-gaming-friendly-presidential-candidates/">dubbed</a> the most "gamer-friendly" Democratic candidate. But the President-elect is better known for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/30/obama-billed-44-5k-for-in-game-advertising/">targeting</a> youth voters with a $44.5K in-game ad campaign during the election season. (And apparently, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/04/xbox-live-us-presidential-election-poll-results/">it worked</a>.)<br /><br />Obama did urge us to "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/24/obama-stop-playing-gameboy/">stop playing Game Boy</a>" and put down the Wiimote (see screencap above -- from his <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UFzkO5OhKY">Election Day ad</a>), but the sentiments were geared toward encouragement rather than scorn. 66 percent of voters ages 18-29 (you know, <em>gamers</em>) supported Obama yesterday, according to <a href="http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/results/polls/#USP00p1">CNN</a>. Forget a puppy, the next US President can show some love back by bringing Wii to the White House.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/05/yes-we-can-haz-gamer-prez/">Yes we can haz gamer prez?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 05 Nov 2008 14:54:00 EST. <div align="left">As Election Day (in the U.S.) progresses, local and cable news stations are reporting on the tallies, numbers, facts and polling figures. But news stations aren't the only ones getting in on the election reporting, Microsoft and their <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/22/register-to-vote-with-xbox-live/">Xbox Live election campaign</a> just released the latest Xbox Live presidential voting numbers and Barack Obama is leading the race.<br /></div>
</div>
<br />According to the number of election gamer picture downloads off the XBLM (where one download equals one vote for the candidate), <a href="http://gamerscoreblog.com/press/archive/2008/11/04/562228.aspx">Obama is leading the race</a> by a whopping 20%. The unofficial Live poll numbers were taken from the weekend of October 31st and have Obama / Biden at 53%, McCain / Palin at 33% and Undecided / Other at 14%. Make the jump to get your fill of pie charts and - if you haven't already - get out and vote. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/04/video-cliff-bleszinski-is-voting-and-so-should-you/">Cliff did</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/04/obama-leads-the-xbox-live-voting-race/">Obama leads the Xbox Live voting race</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 04 Nov 2008 15:00:00 EST. Unless you've been living in a media retardant bubble for the past two years, it's <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Election_Day">Election Day</a> in the United States and that means anyone eighteen and older can and should make their way to their local polling place to cast a ballot. Seriously, it's a presidential election, go out and vote. Whether right this very moment, in an hour or later in the day, just vote. As a bonus, you'll receive an "I VOTED!" sticker.<br /><br />Don't take our word for it, take <a href="http://gamevideos.1up.com/video/id/22434">Cliff Bleszinski's word</a>, because he's voting. In the video above you'll hear a dude asking Cliff about the upcoming election and who he supports. We won't spoil his answer for you, but let's just say "change" sorta has <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/04/mccain.transcript/index.html">duel</a> <a href="http://www.obamaforchange.com/">meanings</a>. Tricky Cliff.<br /><br />Anyway, if you're in the States, please, go out and rock the vote. If you're in Canada, Europe or any other worldly place that doesn't participate in today's elections, please, go play video games.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/04/video-cliff-bleszinski-is-voting-and-so-should-you/">Video: Cliff Bleszinski is voting and so should you</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 04 Nov 2008 11:00:00 EST. With just about a month before the United States picks its next president, GamePolitics has posted a piece on the presidential campaign contributions made by industry big-shots. Would you have guessed that <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/spore"><em>Spore</em></a> designer Will Wright was a McCain supporter? <br /><br />Turns out a lot of industry folks listed in the piece are leaning towards Obama, with thousands of dollars in contributions heading to the Democratic nominee. With some major executives contributing only a few thousand dollars to Obama's campaign, it's interesting to note that two of the biggest spenders are <em>Star Wars</em> mogul George Lucas with $33,100, and not far behind him, Harmonix (<em>Rock Band</em>) CEO Alex Rigopulos with $32,900. Meet 1ickTh3P0l3. He can vote. But why tell him that? When Rock the Vote comes to Xbox Live on Monday (the start of the Democratic National Convention), it won't find the disempowered young citizens eager to be mobilized it's expecting. In fact, the Xbox Live community is a conglomerate of well-organized sub-divisions -- or "clans" -- which communicate through a modified, verbalization of "133t speak" with a large admixture of derisive language; including racial, ethnic, gender, sex, and religious slurs. These nihilistic hatemongers shoot first, typically with rocket launchers, and top it off with a teabag over your dead body. Oh wait, these are just the Xbox Live users <em>under</em> 18. Imagine how the ones of legal voting age spend their nights and weekends ... And you want them <em>rocking</em> what now?<br /> <br />[Image credit: <a href="http://flickr.com/photos/trojanguy/2640736508/">Jeff the Trojan</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/21/rock-the-vote-to-canvas-xbox-live/">Rock the Vote to canvas Xbox Live</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 Aug 2008 12:52:00 EST. It's not a particularly <em>good</em> game, though it is worth noting when the U.S.'s prospective new leaders enter the intimidating world of game development. We hope for a swift response from the presumptive Democratic candidate's campaign -- <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bomberman"><em>Obomberman</em></a>, perhaps<em>?<br /><br /></em>[Via <a href="http://www.gamepolitics.com/2008/06/20/mccain-campaign-launches-facebook-game">GamePolitics</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/21/mccain-campaign-releases-facebook-game-pork-invaders/">McCain campaign releases facebook game: Pork Invaders</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 21 Jun 2008 15:30:00 EST. <br />If politics were more like <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Pokemon/">Pokemon</a>, we would be campaigning for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/17/meowth-is-pretty-much-the-best-pokemon-ever/">Meowth</a>. How can you lose when your platform consists of <span style="font-style: italic;">being totally awesome</span>?<br /><br />But we digress ... One gamer has captured his view of this year's election lead-up with a mock <span style="font-style: italic;">Pokemon</span> battle between the three presidential hopefuls. It has an obvious pro-<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/02/the-ds-life-nintendobama/">Barack Obama</a> slant and an anti-other candidates bias, but it's still clever enough to warrant a look no matter which politician you're leaning towards. We don't want to be thought of as single-issue voters. But we'd be lying if we didn't admit we look a little more favorably on politicians who we imagine might pick up a controller from time to time, in much the same way that people in Philadelphia are legally obligated to vote for a candidate they see eating a cheese steak sandwich at Pat's King of Steaks.<br /><br />So this recent voting guide from <a href="http://videogames.yahoo.com/feature/play-the-vote/1182822-2">Yahoo! Games</a> has proved invaluable for us, and we're betting you can learn a little something too. (Spoiler alert: Obama and McCain are the most gaming-friendly on their respective sides of the aisle.) No, it may not be the only guide you need to the race, but if you're on the fence, it may just help to push you over.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gamepolitics.com/2008/01/31/yahoo-games-rates-prez-hopefuls-on-video-game-issues/">GamePolitics</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/31/yahoo-details-gaming-friendly-presidential-candidates/">Yahoo details gaming-friendly presidential candidates</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 31 Jan 2008 14:30:00 EST. The PAC -- which represents major publishers like Disney, Electronic Arts, Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony -- was approved by the board last fall and will reportedly be ready to go in March.<br /><br />Gallagher estimated the PAC would donate $50,000 to $100,000 to national candidates this year, a number which he labels as small, but a good start. He also talked about combining contribution efforts with the ESA initiative Video Game Voters Network. "If I can walk into the office of a member of Congress and tell them we have 20,000 voters in their state who are already signed up to write letters and act based on game-related issues that concern them, that's powerful," he said. You know what also helps? Money; good thing that's covered too. We're interested in seeing how game rhetoric on Capitol Hill changes, if at all, following the PAC initiative.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gamepolitics.com/2008/01/15/with-election-looming-esa-plans-to-spread-some-cash/">Game Politics</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/15/video-game-industry-seeks-political-clout/">Video game industry seeks political clout</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 15 Jan 2008 13:00:00 EST. But these pundits might be ignoring a potentially important leading indicator of political opinion. We're talking, of course, about <em>World of Warcraft</em> character names.<br /><br />As pointed out by blogger <a href="http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2008/01/ron-paul-in-wor.html">Andrew Sullivan</a>, a full 48 realms in the popular online game have a player-characters named after Republican candidate <a href="http://www.wowarmory.com/search.xml?searchQuery=RonPaul&amp;searchType=characters">Ron Paul</a> (player names must be unique to a realm). The <span style="font-style: italic;">WoW</span> naming support for Paul isn't that surprising given the <a href="http://gamepolitics.com/2008/01/02/gp-covers-the-ron-paul-world-of-warcraft-march/">recent in-game rally</a> held in his honor in Whisperwind's IronForge. Paul runs well ahead of his closest competitor, Democrat <a href="http://www.wowarmory.com/search.xml?searchQuery=BarackObama&amp;searchType=characters">Barack Obama</a>, who shares a name with 36 <em>WoW</em> characters. No other candidate breaks the ten-character mark in a search of <em>World of Warcraft</em> info. resource <a href="http://www.wowarmory.com/">The Armory</a>.<br /><br />While naming a <em>WoW</em> character after your favorite politician seems a great way to show your support, it's not always possible. For one, names longer than twelve characters are not allowed, meaning supporters of Hillary Clinton or Bill Richardson couldn't use their full names for a WoW character. Even shortened names don't always work -- in our tests, characters named HillClinton, HClinton and just plain old Clinton were deemed "unavailable." This likely means the Clinton name has run afoul of Blizzard's <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/legal/termsofuse.html">terms of use</a> clause against using character names that belong "to a popular culture figure, celebrity, or media personality." (This is also probably why there are no characters named BillClinton or GeorgeWBush. There are <a href="http://www.wowarmory.com/search.xml?searchQuery=GeorgeW&amp;searchType=characters">29 GeorgeW's</a> though).<br /><br />While tracking WoW's presidential naming race is fun and all, it probably has very little actual value in predicting nationwide voting preferences. After all, there are <a href="http://www.wowarmory.com/search.xml?searchQuery=Trogdor&amp;searchType=characters">71 characters named Trogdor</a>, and no one really expects him to<a href="http://www.homestarrunner.com/trogdor.html"> burninate</a> across the 2008 elections.<br /><br />Read on for a complete list of <span style="font-style: italic;">WoW</span>'s presidential candidate <span style="font-style: italic;"></span>name counts, as of press time.<br /><br />(Thanks to <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/bloggers/elizabeth-harper/">WowInsider's Elizabeth Harper</a> for help with this story)<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/02/ron-paul-wins-wows-presidential-naming-race/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Ron Paul wins WoW's presidential naming race</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/02/ron-paul-wins-wows-presidential-naming-race/">Ron Paul wins WoW's presidential naming race</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 Jan 2008 17:30:00 EST. For those of you who will be voting, is this one of of your major issues when evaluating candidates? In a time of war, this may seem like a small issue to some, but it's one that affects us pretty much every day. Stopping in Texas, Obama <a href="http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070224/ap_on_el_pr/obama2008">spoke</a> to a group of youths about recruiting their friends for his campaign and said, "I want you to tell them, 'It's time for you to turn off the TV and stop playing GameBoy' ...
