The movement attempted to combine raising money for the charity with convincing BioWare to change the ending of its game.

BioWare was completely unaffiliated with the fundraiser, however, and no amount of money raised would guarantee a new ending -- a fact severely misunderstood by many people that donated. "We were dealing with a lot of very confused people, more every day, and that told us we had a problem," said Penny Arcade's Jerry Holkins in an update on his site. "Apparently some of the people giving to the cause seemed to think that they were paying for a new ending to Mass Effect."

Holkins also said that Child's Play project manager Jamie Dillion was "buried under mail" about the fundraiser from people wanting to know "what the goal is, and how much they need to raise in order to get the ending produced." The charity was also contacted by PayPal, on account of a "high number" of donors requesting refunds. As a result, Child's Play requested that the fundraiser come to an end.

As an organisation, Child's Play has guidelines regulating how money is raised (Child's Play can't be used to sell anything, for instance). Since Retake ME3 technically fell within the boundaries of the charity's existing framework, Holkins has created a new rule to prevent future misunderstandings: "Child's Play cannot be a tool to draw attention to a cause. Child's Play must be the Cause."
Child's Play shuts down fundraiser aimed at changing Mass Effect 3's ending originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 24 Mar 2012 20:30:00 EST. In addition to reiterating BioWare's company-wide policy on seeking out and consuming constructive criticism, Muzyka also gave a small bit of insight into the developer's plans for said feedback:

"Casey Hudson and the team are hard at work on a number of game content initiatives that will help answer the questions," he said, "providing more clarity for those seeking further closure to their journey. You'll hear more on this in April." Muzyka stressed that BioWare is actively working to maintain the story's artistic integrity, and that these new "content initiatives" are separate from the company's pre-existing plans to continue the Mass Effect universe's expansion. "Rest assured that your journey in the Mass Effect universe can, and will, continue."
Mass Effect 3 player feedback spawns 'content initiatives,' details in April originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Mar 2012 12:15:00 EST. Don't know morse code? Can't decode SSTV images? Don't worry, this latest Portal update (the second in one week) is a bit easier to understand. The finale of Valve's beloved puzzle game has been extended with about 15 seconds of new content. In it, players will be introduced to a brand new character, likely one to appear in Portal 2.

While you can go through another Portal adventure by accessing the update on Steam, we'd like to provide you an easier solution. You can watch both the original and extended endings after the break.
According to a Remedy managing director Matias Myllyrinne, the studio wants to discuss the possibility of leaving the ending of its upcoming thriller Alan Wake off discs sent to press with its publisher, Microsoft. "I think we're going to be insanely careful about how much of the story we reveal," Myllyrinne told G4TV. "I'd like to hold it back, [I] don't want anybody to spoil it for the audience. That's just my personal feeling."

Using the twist ending of The Sixth Sense as an analogy, Myllrinne says he'd prefer players be able to piece together the secrets of Bright Falls on their own before having them spoiled by others. Although admirable, his analogy can only mean one of two things: Alan Wake is dead or he's Haley Joel Osment. Either way, we're already terrified.
Alan Wake dev wants to avoid including game's ending in press copies originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 31 Oct 2009 22:30:00 EST. The paddle and blocks can't be anything other than gameplay elements, right? The Tetris blocks don't represent animals or anything, and Arkanoid is the same kind of non-narrative puzzle-action experience.

Except it isn't. One of the things that elevates Arkanoid beyond other Breakout clones is its ridiculous sci-fi storyline, which pits a cylindrical spaceship called the Vaus against barriers put up by the evil Doh, who is a giant moai. The Vaus's primary weapon is ... a giant ball that the crew bounces off of the ship's own body. The spacefaring backdrop makes the game a lot more enjoyable -- especially once you realize that your every action jostles the crew of a spaceship as if they were in a giant cocktail shaker.

For an example of the kind of epic narrative featured in the series (which, to an extent, is also found in Arkanoid DS), we've chosen to present the ending from the Super NES Arkanoid: Doh it Again.
Friday Video: Yes, it has a story originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 20 Jun 2008 20:00:00 EST. It was bound to happen, but some videos from the end of NiGHTS: Journey into Dreams have found their way onto the internets. The quality of these videos is very poor, but since you can sort of make out what's going on despite the talking in the background, these videos should definitely be considered spoilers. From what we could tell, they don't show the very end of the game (although, since we haven't played it, we could be wrong), but just events near the end.

Anyway, there are SPOILER VIDEOS after the break, consider yourselves warned!
Continue reading NiGHTS: Journey of Spoilers

NiGHTS: Journey of Spoilers originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 05 Dec 2007 19:00:00 EST. With just a cursory check, Games Radar was able to dig up no less than 18 NES titles that featured these over-the-horizon endings. Were developers just too lazy to try for anything more? Or was it something more sinister -- a secret cabal of Apollo acolytes looking to resurrect their solar deity with these 8-bit tributes? Think about that the next time you wonder why the sun seems to have somehow increased in size since you last saw it ...
Remembering the 8-bit sunsets originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 14 Jun 2007 13:00:00 EST. Two days after the US release date of Sonic and the Secret Rings, a Sonic fan has made it to the end of the rails and posted a video of the ending on YouTube. We're sure it totally makes sense in context, but we have yet to jump into Sega's latest mascot platformer.

Great news for people who only play Sonic games for the stories: we just saved you $50. It's about time Sonic fans had some good news, right? Of course, this is terrible for weaker-willed fans trying to avoid the rushing tide of SPOILARRRS.

We dare you to watch the video after the break.

[Via Insert Credit]
Continue reading Sonic and the Spoiled Ending

Sonic and the Spoiled Ending originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 23 Feb 2007 09:55:00 EST.
