It's all about Nintendo mascots on the eShop this week. First and foremost, we've got <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/donkey-kong-country-returns-3d"><em>Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D</em></a>, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/17/review-donkey-kong-country-returns-3d/">delightful</a> 3DS port of the challenging Wii game from 2010. Next up, Kirby gets three, count 'em, three new games on the Wii U Virtual Console: <em>Kirby Super Star</em>, <em>Kirby's DreamLand 3</em> and <em>Kirby's Dream Course</em>. The Kirby games are $7.99 apiece or, from now until May 30, if you buy two you'll get the third game free.<br />
<br />
Also running until May 30, you can grab the 3DS eShop game <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/02/portabliss-the-denpa-men-3ds-eshop/"><em>The Denpa Men: They Came by Wave</em></a> for 20 percent off.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/23/new-nintendo-eshop-releases-donkey-kong-country-returns-3d-kir/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New Nintendo eShop releases: Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, Kirby sale</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/23/new-nintendo-eshop-releases-donkey-kong-country-returns-3d-kir/">New Nintendo eShop releases: Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, Kirby sale</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 23 May 2013 12:35:00 EST. <em>Altered Beast</em> is about to <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOQcnliEjXM">wise fwom its gwave</a> on 3DS. Sega has <a href="http://archives.sega.jp/3d/juouki/index.html">announced</a> that <em>Altered Beast 3D</em> will arrive on the eShop next week in Japan, bringing with it several new features, according to <a href="http://tinycartridge.com/post/51067526901/altered-beast-welcomed-to-its-doom-the-3ds-hey">Tiny Cartridge</a>. Like the Japanese <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/14/3d-sonic-the-hedgehog-rolls-onto-3ds-eshop-in-japan-this-week/">eShop re-release of <em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em></a>, <em>Altered Beast 3D</em> will include both the Japanese and western versions of the game, button remapping and an optional mode that emulates CRT monitors.<br />
<br />
None of Sega's 3DS re-releases have been confirmed for a North American release, including <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/21/space-harrier-3d-gliding-onto-eshop/"><em>Space Harrier</em></a>, <a href="http://tinycartridge.com/post/45777972965/3d-super-hang-on-the-second-3d-updated-sega"><em>Super Hang-On</em></a>, <em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em> and, now, <em>Altered Beast</em>. Tiny Cartridge does note, however, that <em>Space Harrier</em> was recently confirmed for Europe, so there may be hope the game will be added to North America's growing Sega eShop library.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/22/altered-beast-3d-coming-to-eshop-in-japan/">Altered Beast 3D coming to eShop in Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 May 2013 20:00:00 EST. <br />
 <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/04/first-guild02-game-coming-to-3ds-eshop-on-may-16/"><em>The Starship Damrey</em></a>, the first <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guild02/">Guild02</a> game from Level-5, is available for download in the 3DS eShop today for $7.99. A sci-fi horror adventure game from Kazuya Asano and Takemaru Abiko, <em>The Starship Damrey</em> awakens players in a mysterious place and tasks them with finding out where they are, and who they are.<br />
<br />
Kazuya Asano and Takemaru Abiko are influential writers whose prose can be seen in a multitude of visual novel games and text adventures in Japan. The two are known for leading the charge of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_novel#Related_terms">the "Sound Novel" genre</a>.<br />
<br />
The Guild02 collection was a series of games, bundled together in Japan, featuring <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/17/three-more-level-5-collaborations-coming-to-eshop/">several notable contributors</a>. Rather than being bundled, each game will be sold piecemeal in the US. It is worth noting, however, that all of the games from the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guild01">Guild01</a> series eventually went on sale at the same time, forming a kind of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/15/level-5s-guild01-eshop-games-go-on-sale-this-week/">cheap bundle</a>. If you're patient, you might get lucky.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-starship-damrey/">The Starship Damrey</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-starship-damrey/#5819284"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/04/tsdscreen01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-starship-damrey/#5819286"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/04/tsdscreen02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-starship-damrey/#5819287"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/04/tsdscreen03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-starship-damrey/#5885293"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/tsdscreen01-1368722189_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-starship-damrey/#5885294"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/tsdscreen02-1368722190_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/16/level-5s-the-starship-damrey-docks-on-3ds-today/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Level 5's The Starship Damrey docks on 3DS today</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/16/level-5s-the-starship-damrey-docks-on-3ds-today/">Level 5's The Starship Damrey docks on 3DS today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 May 2013 14:30:00 EST. The ol' eShop gets a double dose of "super" this week with the release of both <em>Super Metroid</em> and <em>Super Ghouls N' Ghosts</em> on the Wii U. And, don't forget that <em>Super Metroid</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/get-super-metroid-for-30-cents-on-wii-u-virtual-console-right-no/">is only $0.30</a> until June 12. The Blue Bomber continues his assault on the 3DS Virtual Console with the debut of <em>Mega Man 5</em>, along with the original <em>Harvest Moon</em>. Also available is a new 3DS port of <em>Swords &amp; Soldiers</em> from Ronimo, creators of the excellent <em>Awesomenauts</em>.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, the Wii gets some love this week with a Virtual Console release of <em>King of Fighters '99</em>.<br />
<br />
Finally, there are a couple of sales. <em>Runner 2</em> is available for 25 percent off its usual $14.99 price. Also, those who purchase (or already own) <em>Super Mario World</em> on the Wii U Virtual Console can pick up <em>Super Mario Bros. 2</em> <a href="http://www.nintendo.com/wiiu/downloads/virtual-console/deals">for half price</a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/16/new-nintendo-eshop-releases-super-metroid-super-ghouls-n-ghos/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New Nintendo eShop releases: Super Metroid, Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts, Mega Man 5</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/16/new-nintendo-eshop-releases-super-metroid-super-ghouls-n-ghos/">New Nintendo eShop releases: Super Metroid, Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts, Mega Man 5</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 May 2013 10:00:00 EST. Capcom VP Christian "Sven" Svensson has shed some light on why <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/phoenix-wright-dual-destinies"><em>Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies</em></a> is destined solely for the 3DS eShop in the west. Responding to users on the <a href="http://www.capcom-unity.com/ask_capcom/go/thread/view/7371/29928019/dear-capcom-please-reconsider-digital-only-for-ace-attorney-5?post_num=13#532242829">Capcom-Unity forums</a>, Svensson stated that while he understands "the value" of owning a physical copy of a game, "it is a sign of the times that increasingly our business is going digital and not everything is going to be in both formats."<br />
<br />
"Not every game is appropriate for both formats given the economics involved," he wrote, pointing to games like <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/darkstalkers-resurrection"><em>Darkstalkers Resurrection</em></a>, <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/resident-evil-4-hd"><em>Resident Evil 4 HD</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/okami-hd"><em>Okami HD</em></a>, which were released physically in Japan but digitally in the west. "Their COGS (costs of goods sold) and retail margins and reserve issues are entirely different there given the market differences," wrote Svensson. "It's a sad fact, but it's still a fact."<br />
<br />
He added Capcom's US operation "worked very hard" to see <em>Dual Destinies</em> released in the west. "If we'd said 'no, it's not coming', it would have triggered the inevitable 'please bring it to eShop, at least' cries. Instead we shortcutted that and brought it straight to eShop."<br />
<br />
In other gavel-banging news, a playable <a href="http://www.capcom.co.jp/gyakutensaiban/5/trial/index.html">browser demo</a> of <em>Dual Destinies</em> is now available on the game's Japanese website. Just make sure your Kanji is up to snuff if you hope to make heads or tails of it. Finally, <a href="http://gematsu.com/2013/05/ace-attorney-dual-destinies-japanese-web-demo-launched">Gematsu</a> reports that the latest Famitsu confirms that both Miles Edgeworth and Trucy Wright will make a return appearance in the game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/capcom-vp-explains-why-ace-attorney-dual-destinies-is-eshop-onl/">Capcom VP explains why Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies is eShop only, Japanese demo now available</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 15 May 2013 14:30:00 EST. Twenty-one randomly selected indie developers walk into a digital room and ponder the question, "Which online distribution system has been the most effective for your games?"<br />
<br />
If this were the set-up to a joke, the punchline would probably be, "Facebook." But for many indie developers, the question of which platform to publish their games on is a very serious one, with potentially dire consequences. Pared down, platform success is all about accessibility, upload and support, and in terms of those factors, there's a clear, unsurprising favorite: Steam.<br />
<br />
But maybe not for long.<br />
<br />
I asked 21 indie developers this question, and while the majority mentioned Steam in the same casual manner that begets an unchallenged king, there were consistent whispers of other platforms doing things well, perhaps even <em>better</em> than Steam, from a backend perspective. One of these platforms was the Humble Store, which received the second-highest number of solid votes and a handful of positive shout-outs.<br />
<br />
"I owe pretty much my entire survival the last few years to iOS, the Humble Store, and to a lesser extent Android and Steam," Adam Saltsman, the creator of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/canabalt"><em>Canabalt</em></a>, said. But iOS ran into some bad censorship issues, Android had discoverability problems and Steam was "obviously" too closed, he said. If Saltsman could choose just one of those platforms to release his next game on, it would be, "Humble Store," hands-down.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/14/steam-is-king-in-service-wars-humble-store-a-sleeping-giant-in/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Steam is king in service wars, Humble Store a sleeping giant, indies say</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/14/steam-is-king-in-service-wars-humble-store-a-sleeping-giant-in/">Steam is king in service wars, Humble Store a sleeping giant, indies say</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 May 2013 13:45:00 EST. <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/mario-and-donkey-kong-minis-on-the-move"><em>Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move</em></a> highlights the new eShop releases this week. The 3DS puzzler has players guiding poor little mini Marios away from hazards by building a Pipe Dream-esque maze. The Wii U Virtual Console picks up two new games in the classic shooter <em>Xevious</em> and puzzle platformer <em>Solomon's Key</em>.<br />
<br />
You can also pick up Chasing Aurora for half price on the Wii U until May 16. A demo for the Wii U version of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/resident-evil-revelations"><em>Resident Evil: Revelations</em></a> arrives May 14.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/09/new-nintendo-eshop-releases-mario-and-donkey-kong-xevious-sol/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New Nintendo eShop releases: Mario and Donkey Kong, Xevious, Solomon's Key</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/09/new-nintendo-eshop-releases-mario-and-donkey-kong-xevious-sol/">New Nintendo eShop releases: Mario and Donkey Kong, Xevious, Solomon's Key</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 09 May 2013 09:30:00 EST. Half demo and half conciliatory gesture, this exclusive app was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/19/rayman-legends-receiving-wii-u-bonus-mode-in-april/">promised</a> after Ubisoft delayed the Wii U version to prepare a multiplatform release. The full game is due <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/25/rayman-legends-reaches-north-america-august-27-europe-august-30/">September 3</a>.<br /><br />On 3DS, the collection of NES <em>Mega Man</em> games grows with <em>Mega Man 4</em>. And Color Commando launches on DSiWare, a puzzle-platformer about placing blobs of paint around a level to neutralize same-color monsters.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/25/new-nintendo-eshop-releases-rayman-legends-challenges-mega-man/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New Nintendo eShop releases: Rayman Legends Challenges, Mega Man 4</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/25/new-nintendo-eshop-releases-rayman-legends-challenges-mega-man/">New Nintendo eShop releases: Rayman Legends Challenges, Mega Man 4</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 25 Apr 2013 10:00:00 EST. On top of that, Level-5's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/15/level-5s-guild01-eshop-games-go-on-sale-this-week/">Guild series sale</a> begins today, with all three of its eShop games to date discounted. It's a good chance to check out that bizarre collection before it <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/17/three-more-level-5-collaborations-coming-to-eshop/">doubles in size</a>. Oh ... and <a href="http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/fxg4wpBOEjRuElW9FZbTkVh7B_FDI7kb"><em>Dress to Play: Cute Witches!</em></a> is on sale, in an unrelated offer.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/18/new-nintendo-eshop-releases-level-5-sale-tetris-axis/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New Nintendo eShop releases: Level-5 sale, Tetris Axis</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/18/new-nintendo-eshop-releases-level-5-sale-tetris-axis/">New Nintendo eShop releases: Level-5 sale, Tetris Axis</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 18 Apr 2013 10:00:00 EST. Like the previous collection, each is a collaboration with a known game designer.<br /><br /><em>The Starship Damrey</em> is an adventure game by Kazuya Asano and Takemaru Abiko in which your character wakes up in total darkness and must figure out where, and who, they are. The less cerebral <em>Bugs vs. Tanks</em> by Keiji Inafune lets you control a tiny tank and shoot giant bugs. <em>My Summer Vacation</em> creator Kaz Ayabe's <em>Attack of the Friday Monsters! A Tokyo Tale</em> stars a 10-year-old boy who lives in a town where monsters from Japanese TV shows appear every Friday. We'd say "why doesn't he move" but we're also kind of thinking "where can we find that town?"<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/attack-of-the-friday-monsters-a-tokyo-tale/">Attack of the Friday Monsters! The "Professor" carries nitro glycerin, and requires a coaster with a low enough G-force to prevent explosions (since he is a professor of Having a Heart Condition). The Speed Freak, meanwhile, likes fast roller coasters. Oh, and there are zombies.<br /><br />The price and release date of<em> Coaster Crazy Deluxe </em>have yet to be announced.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/16/frontier-developments-goes-coaster-crazy-deluxe-on-wii-u/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Frontier Developments goes Coaster Crazy Deluxe on Wii U</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/16/frontier-developments-goes-coaster-crazy-deluxe-on-wii-u/">Frontier Developments goes Coaster Crazy Deluxe on Wii U</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 16 Apr 2013 02:45:00 EST. If you have a Wii U, of course you should pick that up! Also coming to Wii U soon is Injustice, which will be downloadable from the eShop on April 16, concurrent with its release on other platforms.<br /><br />Also out on April 16: <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/shin-megami-tensei-devil-summoner-soul-hackers"><em>Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers</em></a> on 3DS. However, it's still unclear when the <em>Bit.Trip Runner</em> follow-up will cross the PSN finish line in the region.<br /><br />Gaijin Games' rhythmic auto-run platformer is already out on XBLA, Steam, PSN, and the Wii U eShop in North America, but only the former two saw concurrent arrivals in Europe. Today, Gaijin revealed the April 11 release date for <em>Runner 2</em> on the EU Wii U eShop, but admitted the lack of any word on a PSN arrival is out of the studio's hands.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/10/runner-2-jogs-onto-eu-wii-u-tomorrow-psn-still-tba/">Runner 2 jogs onto EU Wii U tomorrow, PSN still TBA</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 10 Apr 2013 08:00:00 EST. It's out on the eShop just in time to be a few weeks late to promote <em>Castlevania Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate</em>. A couple of former retail games, including the adorable Gabrielle's Ghostly Groove, are also available, as is some DLC for<em> Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/04/new-nintendo-eshop-releases-toki-tori-2-castlevania/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New Nintendo eShop releases: Toki Tori 2, Castlevania</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/04/new-nintendo-eshop-releases-toki-tori-2-castlevania/">New Nintendo eShop releases: Toki Tori 2, Castlevania</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 04 Apr 2013 14:00:00 EST. Nintendo is releasing a series of Mario-themed eShop cards, that also work as AR cards with a new Mario photo app made by the <em>Galaxy/Super Mario 3D Land</em> team.<br /><br />Each denomination comes on a card representing one of two characters: &yen;1,000 Goomba or Koopa cards, &yen;2,000 Mario or Luigi, or &yen;3,000 Bowser or Peach. The 3D models generated by the app show up in photos based on where the cards are placed, just like other photos done with AR cards, and can be posed in different positions and with added effects. Like the Kid Icarus AR Cards, two characters will interact with one another when placed together.<br /><br />Nintendo of America has yet to make any announcements, of either the cards or the <em>Photo Together Super Mario</em> app. We recommend waiting - you don't want to buy eShop credit you can't use, just to interact with an app you can't download.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/01/3ds-eshop-cards-become-mario-ar-cards-in-japan/">3DS eShop cards become Mario AR Cards in Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 01 Apr 2013 15:00:00 EST. A message displayed on the shop notes that it will be available for re-download only for those who have purchased the game, and otherwise unavailable digitally. While not a drastic change in the 3DS user experience, this firmware does offer a few tweaks that sound useful.<br /><br />For example, you won't have to exit the eShop anymore for "Download Later" to work. Just close the 3DS and downloading begins. You can also download game updates in the background. The update also makes the save data transfer tool available, so you can move save data from a packaged version of a game to the eShop version (but not back!) The firmware also makes unnamed "further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments."<br /><br />Apparently, however, Japanese users have been <a href="http://www.nintendo.co.jp/support/information/2013/0326.html?link=rss">experiencing trouble</a> with the firmware update. We're checking with Nintendo of America to see if the same error messages are in danger of occurring here.<br /><br />Update: Nintendo of America <a href="http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/3ds/en_na/ts_apps.jsp?menu=nintendo%20eshop&amp;menu=nintendo%20eshop&amp;submenu=ctr-ts-menu-update-error-message">acknowledged</a> the issue. If an error message prevents you from updating, turn the 3DS off, then turn it back on, while holding the L, R, A, and Up buttons.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/26/3ds-firmware-update-streamlines-download-later-download-it-la/">3DS firmware update adds save transfers, streamlines 'download later'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 26 Mar 2013 13:00:00 EST. That rule is "a thing of the past," eShop business development manager Dan Adelman told <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/189180/Nintendos_Adelman_talks_easier_requirements_for_3DS_Wii_U_indie_dev.php">Gamasutra</a>. It was originally in place to make sure dev kits and confidential information was kept secure.<br /><br />"More and more people are working from home, and we recognize that developers are forming virtual teams around the world," Adelman said, so it became necessary to reevaluate the rule to make the Wii U and 3DS eShops more attractive to indie developers. "We really have only a few requirements to sign up as a licensed developer with Nintendo," he summarized. "The most notable ones are that you have to have some experience making games, you have to be able to keep any confidential materials like dev kits secure and you have to form a company. None of these should be prohibitive to any indie developer." Furthermore, becoming a licensed developer lets you release your games on the eShop anywhere in the Nintendo of America and Nintendo of Europe regions.<br /><br />In other welcome news, the sales threshold - which kept developers from earning any money on their games until they'd sold 6,000 units - is also gone. Originally conceived as a measure to force developers to "self-police their own game quality" in the absence of publishers, it led to unintended consequences. "The threshold was thought to be a convenient way to go about it," Adelman explained. "Unfortunately, some great games that just didn't find an audience wound up being penalized. So for all systems after WiiWare -- DSiWare, Nintendo 3DS eShop, and Wii U eShop, we decided to get rid of the thresholds altogether. Developers receive revenue from unit 1."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/25/nintendos-new-relaxed-restrictions-for-eshop-indies/">Nintendo's new, relaxed restrictions for eShop indies</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 25 Mar 2013 17:20:00 EST. The developer is returning to its handheld horror roots with <a href="http://www.renegadekid.com/cultcounty.htm"><em>Cult County</em></a>, a new FPS for 3DS unveiled at PAX East.<br /><br />The developer posted some 3D images on its website, which you can see by going <a href="http://www.renegadekid.com/cult_mpo.htm">here</a> with your 3DS browser, or using the QR code <a href="http://www.renegadekid.com/cultcounty.htm">here</a>. The sextet comprises Bulbasaur, Pikachu, Torchic, Lucario, Victini, and the oh-so-cute Piplup.<br /><br />As the debut trailer shows, the toys use the Wii U's Near Fields Communication tech to inferface with the game, allowing them, much like in Activision's Skylanders franchise, to appear as in-game characters. <em>Rumble U</em> remains unconfirmed for release outside of Japan, but if the game proves a success - who can see </span>Pok&eacute;mon<span> meets Skylanders being anything but a goldmine? - it would be staggering for it not to make its way west.</span><br /><br /><em>Rumble U</em> is priced &yen;1800 (around $19), and individual figures &yen;200 each (around $2). <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pokemon-scramble-u-nfc-figures/">Pokemon Scramble U (NFC Figures)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pokemon-scramble-u-nfc-figures/#5737384"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/imgindex01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pokemon-scramble-u-nfc-figures/#5737385"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/imgindex03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pokemon-scramble-u-nfc-figures/#5737386"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/imgindex04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pokemon-scramble-u-nfc-figures/#5737387"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/imgindex06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/15/pokemon-rumble-u-toys-revealed/">Pokémon Rumble U toys revealed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Mar 2013 13:00:00 EST. Clicking pre-order on the top-right provides two options: retail and eShop download. The eShop listing says: "An external hard drive is required to download this software." It may be a situation where the basic Wii U's 8GB of storage isn't enough for the download, or it's possible an external hard drive is needed even with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/13/wii-u-north-america-launch-date-price/">the 32GB deluxe model</a>.<br /><br />We've contacted Nintendo for more information. We'll be sure to relay Nintendo's final word as soon as we get it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/14/rumor-lego-city-undercover-eshop-download-requires-external-har/">Rumor: Lego City Undercover eShop download requires external hard drive</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Mar 2013 17:45:00 EST. It'll be released in Japan this summer for free, with the ability to upload either to a "Friend Flipnote Gallery" service or a wider "World Flipnote Gallery" that connects you to a global community of artists.<br /><br />That worldwide gallery carries a monthly fee to cover server costs, and comes with a 30 day free trial. That fee may be waived if your animations prove to be popular! For free, there's a demo of <em>Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity</em> (more of a gate to finity in the demo, we suppose); for relatively cheap, there's the new <em>Kersploosh!</em>, Virtual Console oldie <em>Wrecking Crew</em>, and a week-long discount on the excellent <em>Sakura Samurai</em>.<br /><br />There are also retail-ish releases, led by Renegade Kid's <em>ATV Wild Ride 3D</em>, a new 3DS update of a game originally released on DS. At $8, it's cheaper than retail. <em>Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D </em>launches on eShop today as well.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/07/new-nintendo-eshop-releases-pokemon-mystery-demo-kersploosh/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New Nintendo eShop releases: Pokemon Mystery Demo, Kersploosh</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/07/new-nintendo-eshop-releases-pokemon-mystery-demo-kersploosh/">New Nintendo eShop releases: Pokemon Mystery Demo, Kersploosh</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 07 Mar 2013 15:00:00 EST. "We had never experienced this issue on our devkits, during development, so it seems that this is an issue that only occurs on retail Wii Us," notes Gaijin co-founder Alex Neuse. "This makes it super gnarly to debug. It might not even be our bug. But we have tried to fix it."<br /><br />Aside from making it stop doing that awful thing, the upcoming patch will make a few other tweaks, like saving your highest score on the leaderboard instead of your most recent, and putting some feedback in the mysteriously long-lasting login screen.<br /><br />Despite this problem, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/01/runner-2-review/">we recommend playing <em>Runner2</em></a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/01/gaijin-games-working-on-runner-2-wii-u-patch/">Gaijin Games working on Runner 2 Wii U patch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Mar 2013 16:30:00 EST. The Wii version includes the bonus "ROM City Rampage," a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/27/how-to-turn-retro-city-rampage-into-a-working-8-bit-game/">genuine 8-bit remake</a> of the game!<br /><br />On 3DS, there's a demo of <em>Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate</em>, which hopefully lasts longer than the title. And <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/17/portabliss-fractured-soul-3ds-eshop/"><em>Fractured Soul</em></a> is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/14/3ds-eshop-games-going-on-sale-including-bit-trip-saga-today/">on sale</a> for $7.99 for the next week!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/28/new-nintendo-eshop-releases-retro-city-rampage-runner2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New Nintendo eShop releases: Retro City Rampage, Runner2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/28/new-nintendo-eshop-releases-retro-city-rampage-runner2/">New Nintendo eShop releases: Retro City Rampage, Runner2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 28 Feb 2013 14:00:00 EST.
