We know, we couldn't believe it either, but it's the truth, as recently demonstrated by an outbreak of fake Halo 4 beta test invites.

343 Industries' creative director David Ellis was quick to debunk the bogus site, but the URL used in the phishing scam (halo4beta dot net) is still out there, tempting fate with its Halo-oriented name and un-Microsoftness. Who knows what nefarious maleficence the domain could be used for if left in the wild, so Microsoft has filed a complaint with the National Arbitration Forum in order to have the domain name transferred to its ownership.

In situations like this, the company filing the complaint has to be able to prove that the domain in question was registered maliciously in order for the Forum to decide in its favor. Under the circumstances, we feel like global fraud will probably be malicious enough to sway things in Microsoft's favor.

A quick public service announcement to any and all tipsters sending us links to Don Mattrick's official Twitter account: It's fake. Sure, it would have been nice to reveal new Halo: Reach related details, but the only news out of the Twitter account is that there is no news at all. Really, we're not surprised with such masterfully crafted tweets as: "We're currently working with a third party studio on a new xbox 360 exclusive game engine to showcase unmatched graphical fidilty." Yes, "fidilty."

Microsoft's (real) Twitter expert Major Nelson -- aka Larry Hryb -- tells us he is currently working with the Twitter team to have the account removed. With so many fake accounts, it's no wonder Twitter is testing a new "Verified Account" label. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Don Mattrick for inspiring a phony Twitter account, following good company such as artist Kanye West, ass-kicker Chuck Norris and all of the Pokemans.

And by "Wii hard drive" we actually mean "portable air conditioner." This image emerged from the bowels of the internet earlier today, purporting to be a Nintendo-designed hard drive for the Wii. The pranksters responsible for this didn't count on the razor-sharp observational skills of one JC Fletcher, who located this familiar-looking air conditioner at Amazon Japan. Nintendo had earlier dismissed the image as "rumor and speculation" when CVG inquired, but this pretty much nails it.

Not that this forgery is good for nothing -- for example, it does give us an excuse to once again raise the issue of where the heck our storage solution is, Reggie, and also a chance to guide you into our Wii mockup gallery of lulz.

Commenting on the "replica Uncharted gun," that we posted about yesterday, Sony has told Gamesindustry.biz that it is not officially endorsed and they certainly don't condone it. The gun is supposed to be a replica of Drake's weapon from the 2007 gem, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Without official licensing from Sony, however, selling it as such is just a sneaky attempt at cashing in on the game's success.

Sony has said that they are "investigating the source of this product and will proceed with the most appropriate action." Appropriate action, in this case, probably means letting loose their pack of half-starved, feral lawyers. So don't expect it to be around for too much longer.

This faker called the PNP, on the other hand, is definitely not. While its emulation of the PSP's likeness is sub-par, it is quite easy to be fooled at a quick glance. If you look closer, you'll see a horizontal vertical screen that's much smaller than the PSP's. This makes us believe that this little machine of copyright infringement can only go as far as playing Tetris.

If you see this anywhere, don't bother with it. If you want a real red PSP, grab yourself the God of War one that's out this June 3rd.

After Nintendo Power used a vague moon picture last month in order to hint at something juicy, speculation ran rampant as to what the next issue's big surprise would be. Leave it to heartbreakers and photoshoppers across the internets to play around with our fragile, Squeenix-loving selves.

Rumors of a Kingdom Hearts Wii have been floating around for quite some time -- that's nothing new. People were starting to believe such talk, though, after a "leaked" cover of the next Nintendo Power issue was "found" on an online subscription form. Putting on our skeptic caps, we immediately came up with a few reasons for why this rumor was false:
  • There's no 20th anniversary badge on the cover
  • There aren't enough headlines and previews (only two, whereas last month's NP had twelve)
  • Nintendo Power rarely (if ever) features the DS in its top banner, making this cover seem more unlikely
In case you're not hip to our sleuthing, though, it was also revealed that the Kingdom Hearts cover art in question came from DeviantArt, of all places. So, if you see this rumor on your vast travels across the internet, we'd advise you not to believe it -- even if it hurts. While we're not saying Kingdom Hearts Wii will never happen, it's clear that this cover is nothing but a fake.

We truly appreciate all the tips about the early release letters allegedly sent by Rockstar and Take-Two telling retailers to just go ahead and release GTA IV to the public ... problem is, it just ain't true. That's it, no need to get into details. The letters are nothing but fakes.

Update: While the cover art was confirmed as a fake, Bungie has confirmed that the last map is Blackout - the successor to Lockout! More information can be found on the official post from Luke Smith.

We feel like the guys at MythBusters today. Three myths have been busted by the trusted experts here at Fanboy Towers. This one, we're sad to say, involves the Halo 3 Lockout map remake magazine cover we reported over the weekend.

The rumor was that the upcoming Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack would include a remade version of the Halo 2 map Lockout along with Avalanche (a remade Sidewinder) and Ghost Town. Regarding the Dutch magazine's cover, Bungie's Frank O'Connor and Louis Wu have confirmed the magazine is a fake and Halo.Bungie.Org user RVideo was kind enough to deconstruct the cover and compare it to actual Power Unlimited cover art. Looks like this one is busted folks, but here's something to think about - the cover has been confirmed busted but no one said anything about the last map not being Lockout! By the way, don't hold your breath folks!

Rumors of the final Smash Bros. roster (past the 25 officially announced characters) are nothing new, but with the game's Japanese release nearing, such rumors seem to be reaching a fever pitch. The latest fuel for the fire is the above picture, which purports to show a final roster of 44 characters from the Japanese version of the game. The screen has been floated on a number of sites with varying degrees of credulity -- it was even included at the beginning of a very official-looking GameTrailers video introducing moves for three of the confirmed new characters in the game.

So is this the holy grail of Brawl information? As much as we'd like to believe it so, we just can't. For one thing, the background seems to be taken directly from this official image of a much smaller select screen. Everything matches a little too perfectly, from the transparent background image to the floating cursor in the bottom left corner. For another thing, the images many of the "newly revealed" characters are 2D drawings that don't match up well with the 3D renderings for the officially revealed characters. Even for those that are renders, a closely matching source image can usually be found with a quick Google image search, suggesting an overzealous photoshopper.

Still, we'd be more than happy to be wrong on this one and to be able to play with this impressive list of Nintendo favorites come March 9. For those who want to cover their ears and hold out a shred of hope, check out a full list of the supposedly "revealed" characters below the jump.

Many of you were heartbroken to discover that the Golden Sun III news floating around last week just might be less-than-real. Well, we hate to break it to you, but the creator has 'fessed up to fanning the flames of fan hopes everywhere. Vooks snagged an interview with the fellow behind the fake and asked the question we were all interested in as well: why? Was it a mean-spirited ploy to dash the hopes of Golden Sun fans? Not at all, says creator Opium. Instead, he hoped to foster discussion about the Golden Sun franchise and get people showing support for the property in the hopes that Camelot might take notice of just how desperate folks are for a new game. He also timed the fake's release carefully, hoping that with the E3 crush, it would get caught up as just another piece of news without people looking too far into whether or not the screens were real -- and it certainly seemed to work, as we saw Golden Sun III cropping up all over the place.

As for the how of the thing, Opium cooked up the shots using images from Golden Sun: The Lost Age in Photoshop, and with the aid of a friend, used ninja homebrew skills to get the images to display on his DS. The result was fairly convincing ... and if it happens to help prod developer Camelot into getting to work, then we'll have to be wary around trade shows, as other uber fans might just have to follow in Opium's Photoshopping footsteps.

Only a couple of hours before Nintendo's E3 media briefing yesterday, rumors of a new Golden Sun game for the DS began to spread like a fast-moving cancer, traveling through the internet's lymphatic system, taking over gaming blogs and forums. Even Joystiq, the wind beneath our wings, fell victim to the malignant screenshots that were supposedly leaked from a "secret press gathering" by person-in-the-know gobo_4227.

To your right, you'll see one of those supposed screenshots of Golden Sun: The Sooth Sayer compared with promotional artwork that was released for Golden Sun: The Lost Age back in 2002. Unless you count the bloom filter and "Touch to Start" text, the images are exact twins. The fact that we've heard no official mention of the new RPG -- or any other Camelot-developed title for either Nintendo console -- whilst E3 continues makes this rumor seem even more unconvincing.

Whispery.We would put our journalistic integrity at risk by making a full-fledged post out of this stuff. Seriously, check the link: "confirmed reports" of Brawl and Galaxy release dates, new Mario Kart and Zelda for the Wii, a new original IP similar to Final Fantasy VII ... it's a Nintendo fan's wet dream. While we can't completely discount the fact that it's real, being constantly exposed to this drivel has to make one just a bit jaded.

Rumors are fun, there's no doubt ... even if we know it's fake, it's nice to imagine. But who writes this stuff? What kind of odd psychological thrill do they receive, and why are Nintendo fans so willing to ignore the obvious and go along with it? Some of it is impressive (see the Nintendo On video), but it seems that Nintendo is eighteen times more susceptible to ridiculous rumor-mongering than the nearest competitor. Ah well ... it's kinda fun ... we guess. Your thoughts?

We warned you yesterday. Welcome to many site's nebulous comprehension that April Fool's Day is actually April 1 -- not the day or week before, or the whole month for that matter. Wii.TV gets the first spot in our alerts as they announce Legend of Zelda ... that's it, they didn't even bother to come up with a subhead. Go through the effort of editing a five minute video and don't even bother to come up with a full title. No, Legend of Zelda: Future Calls or Legend of Zelda: Knights of the Ganon Wars.

The video is a compilation of Star Wars concept drawings, Final Fantasy stills and other random elements. Actually, that would make for a good deconstruction exercise. Know where the components come from? Give a shout out.

Come one, come all ... let's look at the freakshow that is this PSP2 fake. If this were real, then we'd have to assume that Sony's fired all of their graphics designers because this is one of the worst Photoshop jobs I've seen. Heck, our own fan-created 'shop jobs were infinitely better than this. This horrifyingly uncomfortable-looking device is nicknamed the "Cobalt" and comes with these supposed specs:

o. All Metal & Ruggedized Rubber Build
o. 200% Brighter Screen
o. Dual Analog Controllers
o. Visual Battery Display
o. 8GB Flash Drive
o. Wifi (a,b,g)
o. Bluetooth V.2 (A2DP, AVRCP)
o. Firmware 4.07

Whoever made this design has either: a) never used a PSP (firmware 4.07???) or b) plays his PSP upside-down. I'd make fun of it more ... but I'll leave that up to you guys.

Crap. Crapcrapcrap.And then Elvis came and denounced the horoscopes, and then Sony made a good PR move. No, folks, astrology is total crap, but that didn't stop some hotshot from making an entertaining article using lots of silly-sounding terms like "synastry" and "radix". Who's destined to come out on top?

As it turns out, Sony has its celestial bodies in order for the coming year. The 360 is decent, but the worst? My goodness, it's the Nintendo Wii. Apparently, the Wii's residence within Scorpio denotes permanence. This clashes with their "active" gaming philosophy, thus creating an unfavorable situation for the company in the future.

The PS3, looking hotter than the Wii? Now we know astrology is fake.

Some folks will do anything for a little attention, and we're happy to oblige, particularly when we get to showcase our big daddy blog Joystiq in a spot of debunking. A reader sent them pictures of his bruised face (and bruised television) and blamed the whole thing on the Wii. He really should have blamed his poor Photoshop skills. Next time you try to scam folks, may we suggest not choosing the second result on a Google image search? Make us dig a little deeper.

Apparently, Wiinjuries and Wiisasters are the hip new accessories for gamers everywhere. Forgot those NES belt buckles. The cool kids 'chop in fake Wii wounds for their MySpace pics, and the more hardcore idiots are probably going around actually punching one another in the face with Wiimotes. We just hope someone films it. Where's Jackass when you need it?

On a side note, anyone else think the word "wiinjuries" should die along with all these yawnariffic claims of Wii-related disasters?

Our sister-site, Engadget, has a knack for finding weird PSP knock-offs. They found another one, which makes the oft-rumored PSP phone a reality... sort of. The V191 phone has a 1.3Mpix camera, MP3 music player, and an MP4 video player. Sounds familiar? It also has a gaming feature, which seems to readily allow illegally emulated games to play on the phone. Hmm.

This sounds very cool and all, but we can't help but be discouraged by the phone's clear lack of creativity in the design department. The back of the phone features the PSP's unique metallic circle, and it also has the word "FUN" written in the PSP's font. Check out more pictures at Akihabara, where you can how this bootleg phone stole the PSP's D-Pad, and face buttons as well. Even though it's not original, it does seem pretty cool.

Sony Ericsson recently held a contest for Chinese university students to design a new phone. One creative student decided to take the opportunity to render his idea about the rumored Ericsson PlayStation phone. This render features a UMD slot and a DS-inspired flip-top. This render is also shown to be slightly smaller, but thicker, than the PSP itself. What do you guys think about it? If it didn't cost a gazillion dollars, would you pick one up?

They say that imitation is the best form of flattery. Well, Sony should be incredibly flattered by the endless amounts of cheap PSP knock-offs there are on the market. While the bootlegs that we unearthed earlier could do only the most primitive of things, it appears that the latest batch discovered by Engadget China take a lot of Sony's functionality as well. For example, the system pictured above features a 16:9 screen and can play MP3 and WMA music files, and play MP4 movies. Sounds vaguely familiar... Check out Endadget to see the rest of their finds.

Rumors have a nasty way of cropping up on the internet... and not dying. This is one of them.

This pretty piece of work surfaced as a possible title screen for Halo 3. It was discussed without end among forum goers and Xbox 360 fans. But apparently it was just a sham. There's been a "Bungie Update" calling this one out as nothing but a faked image. Sure, it's convincing, but most pranks are. Keep your eyes peeled, this probably won't be the last of 'em.

I know it's not a 1: 1 comparison, and perhaps the quality of the grab is poor, but do Kutaragi & Ko. really think Xbox 360 fanboys aren't going to bust balls over this stuff? Because that looks painfully PS2.5. Maybe it's from the PSP version. 

It's not like Sony has a history of grossly exaggerating the capabilities of their consoles and passing off CGI fluff as gameplay.

A sharp eyed reader of Spanish forum Elotrolado.net has spotted what could either be a strange coincidence, or proof that the Nintendo GO is a fake. One recurring theme of the Nintendo GO rumor is the design's 6-faced D-pad logo pictured above on the right which--it turns out--looks very similar to the logo of a discontinued web design suite called Namo Webeditor 5 (link to the product's Amazon page).

We'd love to say that this totally disproves the rumor's legitimacy but considering the D-pad design's obvious connection to Nintendo, it's equally possible that Nintendo (if GO is real) or the hoaxer (if GO is fake) could have been completely unaware of the design's likeness to Webeditor 5's logo. The mystery continues...
