Nevertheless, we turned to Massively's Ryan Greene to explain why you might be interested, either if you're new to the game or simply looking for an excuse to return to Azeroth.</font></small>

Have you noticed a new excitement in the air? Have you felt the rumblings from the deep places of the world and tasted dread on the wind? Have you wondered why all your nerdiest friends planned months in advance to contract fake illnesses on the same day?<br />
<br />
<a href="http://joystiq.com/game/world-of-warcraft-cataclysm"><em>Cataclysm</em></a> has arrived, and <em>World of Warcraft</em> will never be the same ... which is the same cheesy line you've been hearing for weeks, if not months. <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW's</em></a> third expansion is <a href="http://wow.joystiq.com/tag/countdown-to-cataclysm">huge news</a> for dedicated players, but what does it mean for everyone else? For anyone who has never tried <em>WoW</em> or who gave it up many moons ago, the changes <a href="http://www.wowpedia.org/Deathwing">Deathwing</a> hath wrought (with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard/">Blizzard's</a> help) mean there has never been a better time to jump into the game. See, this week some of the developers from Capcom show off a great deal of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/monster-hunter-tri"><em>Monster Hunter Tri</em></a>, documenting some of the weaponry, multiplayer features and, of course, the monsters in the series' latest. It's an enlightening few minutes of footage, so check it out above.<br />

When you're done, head past the break for the full list of this week's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/nintendo-channel">Nintendo Channel</a> content.<br />

We talk about a wide variety of iPhone games in this feature, but we're increasingly in support of games like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Canabalt/"><em>Canabalt</em></a><em> </em>which require just a single touch to play. Call us lazy, but one-thumb tapping seems to be the exact amount of interaction we need on our phones, and <em>Crush the Castle</em>, our latest iPhone addiction, delivers on just that.<br />
<br />
You play as a sentient trebuchet attacking an increasingly intricate and fortified series of castles filled to the brim with royalty and their servants. With a single touch, you'll start the firing arc, with a second tap to choose the exact moment to release your (increasingly potent) ammunition. The fewer shots it takes you to bring down the castle, the greater the reward, in the form of bronze, silver and gold medals.<br />

<span style="float: right; margin-top: 4px; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-left: 4px;"><script> digg_url = 'http://digg.com/playstation/PS3_Slim_Unboxing_in_pictures'; </script><script src="http://digg.com/tools/diggthis.js"></script></span> Shortly after the PS3 Slim was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/18/sony-announces-new-slimmer-ps3-coming-first-week-of-sept/">announced at GamesCom</a>, Sony arrived at our doorstep ... with a PS3 Slim. (It was one of the most surreal incidents we can recall from our years of writing about games.)<br /><br />Even though it won't hit retail shelves in the US until the first week of September, we've had the uncommon opportunity to open the box and offer our first impressions of the svelte console on the day of its announcement. We've documented the unboxing in the photo gallery below, along with a variety of pictures showing the PS3 Slim compared to other consoles, so you can get a better idea of its size (or, compared to the original PS3, its lack thereof).<br /><br />Our initial impressions: It's definitely smaller, but not shockingly so. (Want shocking? Check out the PS2 "slim" on top of it.) It's still a hefty system that feels well made, and even though it lacks the gloss black and chrome finish of the original PS3, it's a lot nicer looking in person that the initial photos might have led you to believe. There's still a bit of pizazz in the form of a thin piece of glossy translucent plastic covering the eject / power button "panel" that looks extra classy.<br /><br />Overall, it's about as pared down as we can imagine the platform getting feature-wise; we're curious to see if Sony introduces yet another, considerably smaller redesign a couple of years down the road. Oh, and maybe it will actually come with an HDMI or some component cables ... and not the Slim's composite A/V leads. Seriously, Sony? <em>Seriously</em>?<br /><br />We'll have our video of the unboxing up soon. In the meantime, let us know in comments if there's anything particular you'd like us to go into more detail on; we'll be compiling the answers to your questions about the hardware for an upcoming post.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ps3-slim-unboxing/">PS3 Slim Unboxing</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ps3-slim-unboxing/#2217763"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/ps3.slim.unboxed01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ps3-slim-unboxing/#2217805"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/ps3.slim.unboxed05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ps3-slim-unboxing/#2217764"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/ps3.slim.unboxed02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ps3-slim-unboxing/#2217812"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/ps3.slim.unboxed06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ps3-slim-unboxing/#2217795"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/ps3.slim.unboxed07_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/19/ps3-slim-unboxing-in-pictures/">PS3 Slim: Unboxing in pictures</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 19 Aug 2009 01:31:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/no-gravity"><em>No Gravity: The Plague of Mind</em></a> just released last week in North America and it will hit the PSN today in Europe. Little is known about this homebrew-turned-commercial space shooter, but we're here to shed some light on Realtech-VR's latest as we go hands-on with the title. So strap your boots to the ground, we're going into <em>No Gravity</em>.<br /><br />The overall feeling one gets from <em>No Gravity </em>is laced with modesty. Its a simple game, one where its homebrew roots are clearly evident. Its production values may not be as high as the Triple-A, big-name studio titles, but it does do a pretty good job at putting out a worthy shooter. The game may lack FMVs and the story is told through stills, but the controls are smooth and easy to pick up. <br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/05/joystiq-hands-on-no-gravity/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq hands-on: No Gravity</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/05/joystiq-hands-on-no-gravity/">Joystiq hands-on: No Gravity</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 05 Mar 2009 11:30:00 EST. The development chops of the Canadian company are almost impossible to question, with hit after hit being released from its Edmonton headquarters. Now the reunion with keyboard and mouse is accompanied by the most ambitious fantasy RPG <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/bioware">BioWare</a> has attempted since the original <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baldur%27s_gate">Baldur's Gate</a></em>. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dragon-age">Dragon Age: Origins</a></em> is a true return to roots for the company, a homecoming with its dearest fans.<br /><br />It makes sense then to find David Gaider, one of the original writers of the <em>Baldur's Gate</em> plot, at the keyboard behind <em>Dragon Age</em>. We had the chance to talk briefly with the author about what this highly-anticipated title will offer. Though he couldn't reveal much in the way of story components, he did offer a tantalizing view into the world's history. Join us as we talk with Gaider about stepping back from <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mass-effect">Mass Effect</a></em>'s advances, the joys of returning to PC gaming, and what he considers required reading for any <span style="font-style: italic;">Dragon Age</span> fan.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dragon-age-origins/">Dragon Age: Origins</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dragon-age-origins/#2007230"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/dragonageorigins05110903_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dragon-age-origins/#2351180"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/dao_100909image1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dragon-age-origins/#2351181"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/dao_100909image2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dragon-age-origins/#2351182"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/dao_100909image3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dragon-age-origins/#2007231"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/dragonageorigins05110904_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/04/joystiq-interview-dragon-age-storytelling/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq interview: Dragon Age storytelling</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/04/joystiq-interview-dragon-age-storytelling/">Joystiq interview: Dragon Age storytelling</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 04 Sep 2008 20:00:00 EST. A ninja. Originally unknown to the world, gamers everywhere now know him as Ryu Hayabusa--star of today's hottest new release <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Ninja-Gaiden-2/">Ninja Gaiden II</a></em>.<br /><br />As the warrior Ryu steps into the shadows never to return again, we look back at his origins and humble beginnings. Though many of the sessions are highly technical in nature -- discussing the use of software tools and compositional elements -- enjoying the music and the auditory experience of gaming hardly takes a degree. I sat in on one of these sessions, "<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo-3">Halo 3</a></em>: An Audio Postmortem", and was rewarded greatly. Not only did I have the chance to listen to Jay Weinland, C. Paul Johnson, Mike Salvatore and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Marty%20O%27Donnell">Marty O'Donnell</a> speak on the process of composing for Bungie's titles, but the audio team brought hilarious outtakes for us to listen to.<br /><br />Read on below the break for a few words on composing audio for the series, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Adam%20Baldwin">Adam Baldwin</a>'s <em>Halo</em>-style take on Full Metal Jacket, and comedienne Debra Wilson's take on a angry, ranting, foul-mouthed, lesbian marine. Even better: the Wilson outtakes have apparently never been made available outside of Bungie's studio before. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/halo-3/">Halo 3</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/halo-3/#229212"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/val_ext3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/halo-3/#229213"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/hg_assault_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/halo-3/#229214"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/hg_ext2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/halo-3/#229215"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/hg_ext1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/halo-3/#229216"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/chiefvisor_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/27/halo-3-outtakes-full-metal-jacket-and-ranting-lesbian-space-marin/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Halo 3 outtakes: Full Metal Jacket &amp; ranting lesbian space marine</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/27/halo-3-outtakes-full-metal-jacket-and-ranting-lesbian-space-marin/">Halo 3 outtakes: Full Metal Jacket &amp; ranting lesbian space marine</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 27 Feb 2008 18:29:00 EST. He explained what exactly a Live team is, and marked some of the BioWare success stories that can be tracked back to that group; initiatives like the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/premium%20module/">Premium modules</a> were developed entirely in this little-known area of the company. He also hinted at some fascinating future plans for the team, like the potential of an interactive website not unlike the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/world-of-warcraft" style="font-style: italic;">World of Warcraft</a> 'Armory' site.<br /><br />In the process of talking about the team, French offhandedly mentioned the end of an era. The upcoming patch to the original <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Neverwinter%20Nights">Neverwinter Nights</a></em> game, 1.69, will be the last the company releases. After seven years of tweaks and corrections, official support will be ending for this venerable game title. <a href="http://nwn.bioware.com/forums/viewtopic.html?topic=618952&amp;forum=42">Beta patch notes for the 1.69 patch</a> are available on the official forums. Though this is hardly news for the vibrant community still playing this game, it's worth noting the passage of one of BioWare's landmark titles. <br /><br />Read on for more on the BioWare Live team - including a lesson in why you should never post to forums angry.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/gdc08-biowares-last-neverwinter-nights-patch-live-team-explai/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC08: BioWare's last Neverwinter Nights patch, live team explained</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/gdc08-biowares-last-neverwinter-nights-patch-live-team-explai/">GDC08: BioWare's last Neverwinter Nights patch, live team explained</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 22 Feb 2008 21:00:00 EST. Each of the authors brought a pair of games that they viewed as some of the narratively strongest yet made. Prior to the panel all four men played the ten titles, and came prepared to talk about the strengths and merits of each. Panelists <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Richard%20Rouse">Richard Rouse</a> (Paranoid Productions), <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Steve%20Meretzky">Steve Meretzky</a> (Blue Fang), <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Marc%20Laidlaw">Marc Laidlaw</a> (Valve Software), and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Ken%20Rolston">Ken Rolston</a> (Big Huge Games) offered up, in essence, a 'top eight' list for gamers looking to get more from exposition than explosions.<br /> <br /> Read on for views from a panel of expert opinions on the likes of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/loom">Loom</a></em>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/bioshock">BioShock</a></em>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/phoenix-wright">Phoenix Wright</a></em> and the legendary <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/planescape/">Planescape</a></em>: Torment.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/21/gdc08-the-eight-best-stories-in-gaming/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC08: The eight best stories in gaming</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/21/gdc08-the-eight-best-stories-in-gaming/">GDC08: The eight best stories in gaming</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 Feb 2008 11:30:00 EST. Above is a picture of a stage in the development of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Little%20Sisters">Little Sisters</a>, a hint at other (stranger?) versions of Rapture and its denizens. You can catch other stages in the Sisters development in our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ken-levine-storytelling-gallery/">gallery of photos from the talk</a>.<br /><br />Like the Little Sisters concept, the video itself shows an early version of Rapture. The beautiful art-deco world we know and love is an ugly, boxy, warehouse of a place. Check it out below the cut for raging Big Daddies, worm-like Little sSsters, and one of the quickest "time to crate" experiences in gaming.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ken-levine-storytelling-gallery/">Ken Levine Storytelling Gallery</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ken-levine-storytelling-gallery/#654809"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/02/cimg1985_800x600_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ken-levine-storytelling-gallery/#654808"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/02/cimg2002_800x600_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ken-levine-storytelling-gallery/#654807"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/02/cimg1973_800x600_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ken-levine-storytelling-gallery/#654806"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/02/cimg1976_800x600_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ken-levine-storytelling-gallery/#654805"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/02/cimg1987_800x600_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/21/gdc08-early-pre-little-sister-bioshock-footage/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC08: Early, pre-Little Sisters BioShock footage</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/21/gdc08-early-pre-little-sister-bioshock-footage/">GDC08: Early, pre-Little Sisters BioShock footage</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 Feb 2008 09:15:00 EST. It was a great opportunity to check out the changes and tweaks to the Xbox 360 title we all know and love. Add-ons like the improved equipment UI (pictured above), more deliberate squad commands, and a great-looking new 'hacking' mini-game spoke volumes about BioWare's commitment to keeping PC gamers happy.<br /><br />Afterwards we spoke briefly with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Ray%20Muzyka">Ray Muzyka</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Greg%20Zeschuk">Greg Zeschuk</a>, the driving minds behind <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/BioWare/">BioWare</a>, about <em>Mass</em> on the PC. They expounded on their background with the WASD crowd, hopes for the future of the <em>Mass Effect</em> franchise, and offered a few words on what it's like to work for EA. We even asked them about <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/bioware">their upcoming Massively Multiplayer Online Game</a> ... and got shot down.
