After new achievements were discovered for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, it's no surprise that the marketing machine is ramping up again for the game. Major Nelson notes that this week's "deal" on Xbox Live's marketplace is the "Jedi Temple Mission Pack" for 400 ($5). That's half off the normal price and is available only to gold members.

The pack, which was originally released last December, follows The Apprentice as he searches through the rubble of the Jedi Temple to learn more about his father. The pack also comes with three new outfits made out of ... well, we never did find out what happened to those Bothans.

We bet you thought you were done with Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Well you just hold on a minute buster, it looks like LucasArts still wants to milk a few more Microsoft Points out of you before they've had their fill. We say that because a new batch of achievements have been discovered for the game on Xbox.com (full list at X360A).

What's particularly interesting about these achievements is that most of them relate to characters made famous after the events that take place in Force Unleashed. There are achievements for defeating Boba Fett, Jabba's Rancor, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. The interesting part about the third one is that you have to defeat Obi-Wan before and after he dies. From the sound of things, there's some new DLC on the way that takes place during A New Hope. It also seems like it tasks players with taking up the role of Darth Vader, or perhaps it will introduce an alternate history involving his secret apprentice.

LucasArts will be at the San Diego Comic-Con next week -- with plenty of announcements to make -- so we probably won't have to keep guessing for long.

The Force Unleashed may have sold 5.7 million units worldwide, but let's take a look at the substance of that figure. Gamasutra notes that the global total is made up of all the various platforms the title was available on. The list includes all major consoles, handhelds, iPod Touch, iPhone, N-Gage (for realz?!) and other mobile devices.

Despite the varying quality of Force Unleashed on all platforms, the competent next-gen offerings were a hit right out of the space hanger. Although the gameplay may not have been stellar, the story certainly captured people's attention, as the title went on to recently win a Writers Guild award for game writing.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed has been awarded the second annual video game writing award by The Writers Guild of America. The title bested Fallout 3, Tomb Raider: Underworld, Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 and Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble! Before complaining about your favorite game not even being nominated, it's worth noting that the award is only open to WGA members.

Congratulations to Haden Blackman, Shawn Pitman, John Stafford and Cameron Suey on the award. They crafted a fine story that fit into the Star Wars universe and arguably bested any of the "prequels."

The Writers Guild of America has announced five nominees for best video game writing in 2008. This will be the Guild's second year giving out the award, with last year's nod going to Dead Head Fred. Hmm, well, this year's nominees are certainly an interesting group and are sure to generate some conversation about what constitutes good writing in a game ... provided said game was written by an eligible WGA member, that is.
Although most of those titles are instantly recognizable, Dangerous High School Girls is an indie title that's (clearly) gaining some recognition. Are you betting on the dark horse? The winner will be announced Feb. 7.

We just had a thought: with Wii supplies potentially catching up with demand, we may see a Wii modding boom. After all, there's slightly less danger to modding a Wii if it is possible to find another one -- and some people may not have been able to find even one Wii to accidentally gouge or splatter.

This Star Wars mod adds fiber-optic stars, a plexiglass logo and a hand-painted space combat scene to an aftermarket black Wii case -- with, of course, the standard slot light alteration. As a certain Star Wars character might say, "GRRRRAAARRRGGGHHHHH!" (That's the Chewbacca noise, which we've never tried to transcribe before.)

If you somehow still love Star Wars after all it's been through, you can follow modder BeerBellyJoe's Instructable, or just buy the thing on eBay, with 15% of the purchase price going to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. It even includes a copy of The Force Unleashed! BeerBellyJoe is also responsible for a totally great Mario mod from earlier this year, as well as the must-see Hulk system.

The Top Global Markets sales data from NPD, Chart-Track and Enterbrain (via GameDaily) reveals that Madden NFL 09 blitzed the global charts to become the best selling game in the third quarter of '08 (that's July to September). Trailing Madden were Wii Fit and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Also, showing that the franchise still has some Pikachu-charged power behind it, Pokémon Platinum battled in fourth place with 1.4 million units sold, despite being only available in Japan. Mario Kart Wii rounded out the top five.

Certainly the most interesting question about the sales figures is: Where would Wii Fit be if it was actually meeting demand? Madden's sales were (obviously) US heavy, while Wii Fit had a regional sales spread based on Wii's install base. Find the full sales figures after the break.

For all the controversy, mixed reviews and internal firings, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is a sales success! According to Lucas Arts, Force Unleashed moved 1.5 million units worldwide in its first week of sales, making it the fastest selling Star Wars game ever. EVER! Though, one has to be sure to note that the 1.5 million number takes into account the game's sales on all platforms. We guess a decent demo can help a game's sales after all.

Sure, many Bothans developers lost their lives jobs, but The Force Unleashed has gone on to sell 1.5 million units worldwide in less than a week, making it the fastest-selling Star Wars game of all time. The figures are based on the first five days of sales across all platforms the game is available on. LucasArts states it shipped more than 4.3 million copies of the game globally, but the demand now requires more units to be manufactured.

Although reviews of the game have been fairly mixed, strong initial sales seem to have been foretold by the game's record-setting demo downloads and, uh, book sales.

The reviews are in for The Force Unleashed, and though the title promises unparalleled Force-based action, it seems that most of the praise being heaped on the game is for its story and how well it nails Lucas' universe.

That doesn't mean that the Force is wrong with this one, though (we've been waiting for months to use that). The consensus is that throwing wookies about like Congenital Generalized Hypertrichosis-stricken Ken dolls is a never-ending font of fun.
  • Eurogamer (70/100): "It gets an extra point, then, from this Star Wars obsessive for the story and the mostly magnificent recreation of the universe. As a fan you will want to experience what The Force Unleashed has to offer. It's just a shame that while there are occasional moments of brilliance when everything falls into place, they're not quite enough to back up the game's delusions of grandeur."
  • Game Informer (88/100): "The Force Unleashed isn't the ultimate Star Wars game - KOTOR is still king in my book. But, as advertised, it amplifies this mystical power in new ways to delivers exciting gameplay and unforgettable Star Wars moments. It'll leave you wanting more, but take my word for it, it's worth playing just to see Vader Force-throw wookiees."
  • Giant Bomb (60/100): "Overall, the story is the main thing that I'll remember about The Force Unleashed--I found it to be more satisfying than the last three movies combined. ... That said, it's unfortunate that the game isn't a bit more even, because the constant flips from too easy to too hard really drag things down and prevent The Force Unleashed from being great. But even with its lengthy list of caveats, The Force Unleashed is still one of the best Star Wars games to be released in quite some time."

The big releases are starting to drip out as the industry steadily ramps up for yet another packed holiday season. This week, the Xbox 360 plays host to some decent titles including the likes of Rock Band 2, Pure, and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. On top of those, we've also got Armored Core: For Answer and ... um ... Battle Fantasia. To our disappointment, we have learned that Battle Fantasia is not a fighting game about the Disney movie Fantasia. It's a shame, really, because we were ready to throw down with some tutu-wearing hippos.

Harnessing its force-like powers, Lucas Arts is gloating that the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed demo that released to the XBLM last month, broke a prestigious Marketplace record. Specifically, Lucas Arts claims that the Force Unleashed demo was downloaded 1 million times off the Marketplace in an eight day period, which would be a day quicker than the previous demo record holder Too Human. With demo downloads like that, The Force Unleashed should easily eclipse 5 million copies at retail ... HA!

LucasArts has always been a strong supporter of the PSP, and the effort they're placing into the upcoming PSP version really shows. Anyone who's played the PS3 demo will find this level awfully familiar: it looks like the PSP version makes no significant sacrifices. Physics, destructible environments, and large hordes of enemies are all present in the PSP version. In fact, there's exclusive content on the PSP version you won't even find on the consoles. How's that for love?

Here's a fun Star Wars nugget that you may not have noticed during your numerous play-throughs of the new Force Unleashed demo. Above a tunnel in the TIE fighter area of the demo you'll find -- the head of Republic Commando's Delta 1138! Eeegah! ... No, no, we're kidding, it's probably just his helmet.

Tipster and head hunter SpikeDelight tells us "This is almost surely a hint towards a next-gen sequel to the game," but we're not sure we'd go that far. Still, it's cute, right?

You'll be able to get your hands on a demo of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed this Thursday on PSN. However, we had a chance to get an early look at the upcoming release. As with most every Star Wars game, there's a lot of excitement and anticipation over this upcoming LucasArts project -- in spite of the franchise's notorious legacy of mediocrity. However, fans have rallied for The Force Unleashed, due to its unique interpretation of Force powers, and the dark character that stars in it. Darth Vader's apprentice is, essentially, the Kratos of the Star Wars universe. Dark, brooding, conflicted ... and yet oh-so-powerful. Certainly, the premise has a lot going for it.

However, it becomes immediately apparent that The Force Unleashed isn't going to be the definitive Star Wars game that some are hoping it would be. The visuals are rather lackluster, with none of the environments, character models, or special effects looking beyond "par." Of course, it may be because of the demo: restricted to a rather clean, barren Imperial spaceship, there isn't much to see. Perhaps the game's later planetary levels will offer a bit more eye candy. Even the framerate didn't feel smooth -- and the camera seemed annoying, requiring manual adjustment throughout.

More specifically, on the morning of Thursday, August 21st. Also as promised, the Force Unleashed demo will include a tutorial mode to master the Force Grip power and a complete level of gameplay set in a TIE Fighter Construction Facility where we're guessing a bunch of objects explode real good. The possibility was discussed months ago and now forceunleashed.org has learned that Lucas Arts' own marketing manager Matt Shell has confirmed that a Star Wars: The Force Unleashed demo will be releasing to the Xbox Live Marketplace sometime next month. Interesting too is mention that the demo will feature a different experience than the game itself, with a remade Tie Fighter Construction Facility, extra force powers unlocked and a special conclusion to the level that isn't seen in the retail version. Force Unleashed, good or bad? We'll give you an answer next month.

LucasArts released a fancy new trailer for The Force Unleashed and, although many of the people who made it aren't working at the company anymore, the empire must march on to get ready for the Sept 16 launch.

Feel free to peruse our hands-on impressions of several versions of the game (Wii, PSP/PS2, DS) after you've checked out the trailer featuring -- what we're guessing, by the looks of it -- is the PS3/Xbox 360 version of the title. We're pretty psyched for the PSP version of The Force Unleashed. Why? Well, it looks gorgeous. It also adds tons of PSP-exclusive features, like historical missions. You'll be able to recreate the epic battle between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker in Episode V exclusively on PSP, for example. The lack of a second analog stick, according to Joystiq doesn't appear to hinder the game at all. "The PSP game still moved smoothly, and the automatic camera tracked from behind my character, usually providing an effective view of what I needed. In both versions, I felt in control of my aim, throwing the light saber at enemies, or launching other attacks from a distance."

For good and bad -- or should I say light and dark -- Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for Wii is clearly a Wii game. Side-by-side with the PS3 and 360 versions, the Wii graphics disappoint, and the complexity and frequency of enemies feels scaled back. But the Wii motion controls are regularly interesting, mapping many of the game's controls into gestures. The simplest ones feel great, like punching the Nunchuk forward to do the Force-push.

After recently playing late-development versions of all four game editions--360/PS3, Wii, DS, and PS2/PSP--I think the Wii game holds up as well as any of them. I had fun throwing enemies, shooting them with lightning, and hitting them with the lightsaber. And while the Wii holds its own, I'm mildly concerned that the final game could be repetitious, just cutting down waves of attackers. Hopefully the many different attacks, and Wii-specific two-player duel mode, will keep the game interesting.

The PSP version of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed looks to be quite a winner. Not only will it have more content than its console brethren, but it's already pulling off some impressive visuals. Look at this new video from IGN to see the bloom lighting, impressive particle effects and spectacular physics engine. This is a portable game?

No, you're not seeing things, and no we haven't made a gargantuan mistake by having a Star Wars: The Force Unleashed pic on a Soulcalibur IV story. It, basically, is the story. For you see, according to Gamespot, not only is Darth Vader making his way into the PS3 version of Soulcalibur IV, but his dark apprentice will be following close behind. However, the apprentice will be the only guest Star Wars character to go multiplatform as both Vader and Yoda will remain console exclusives.

It's quite interesting to see all these cross-genre, cross-developer crossovers. Another prominent one is Assassin's Solid. We wonder which two developers will unite and surprise us next.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com (most straightforward website name evar), Star Wars: The Force Unleashed producer Cameron Suey revealed that a demo for the game is definitely in the works. Suey stated that LucasArts "definitely want to get it out there," noting, "the gameplay itself is so engaging, people who aren't Star Wars fans or who aren't even hardcore gamers, once they get their hands on some of the gameplay and how it works, are really going to be won over by it." Strong words to be sure. No details were given regarding when the demo will actually be available. Presumably, it will arrive shortly before or just after the game launches in September.

Oh boy, we're really worried now about the plethora of Wii-itis and other Wii-injuries stories coming in September. We've already written about our hands-on time with Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for Wii, specifically the duel mode, but G4TV has a video of LucasArts producer Dan Wasson showing X-Play's Morgan Webb how to use the control scheme in duel mode.

To summarize: the game recognizes five different directions -- left, right, up, down and "stab" -- for different lightsaber strikes, while force powers are done with the nunchuk and can be combined for combos. We could easily see how this might get out of hand (literally) in heated multiplayer matches, what with someone getting strangled with the nunchuk wire and another hapless Wii remote sent through a big-screen TV. Help us, Wiimote Glove Kenobi, you're our only hope.

Is making Darth Vader a playable character even a bonus anymore? Regardless, we're sure Star Wars fanboys out there will be happy to know that Darth Vader is indeed playable in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Darth is playable in the first level of the game, in which he travels to Kashyyyk and locates the boy that will become his secret apprentice. For those of you keeping score, said secret apprentice is the actual star of the game. Darth Vader comes complete with the Force powers you'd expect, most notably Force choke, which he uses to ... um ... choke people. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is hitting the PSP this coming September 16. In case you didn't hear about it yesterday over on PS3 Fanboy, Force Unleashed lets players run amok as Darth Vader's secret apprentice. That means feel free to kill any and all younglings your dark heart so desires.

The PSP version of Force Unleashed is not being developed by LucasArts but is under the care of Krome Studios. The portable version will also not be featuring the Digital Molecular Matter and Euphoria engines that make the PS3 version so life-like; however, it will include exclusive levels. Expect this title to ship out to Southeast Asia and Australia by Sept. 17, and Europe on Sept. 19.

LucasArts today announced that the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will be arriving on United States shores on September 16, 2008. Southeast Asia and Australia will see the game the next day on September 17, whereas Europe gets the latest Jedi fix on September 19. The Force Unleashed takes place between episodes 3 and 4 of the Star Wars saga and tells the story of Darth Vader's secret apprentice who, among other things, utilizes incredibly strong Force powers and has discovered yet another weird way in which to wield a light saber. The most notable feature of the game thus far is its implementation of physics among its characters and environments.

Please note our use of extreme self-control in not resorting to an "unleashed" pun when writing this article.

Folks have been watching the console version of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed because it looks like it's going to be the benchmark for kicking ass with The Force in video games. The DS version hasn't received much focus in the discussion revolving around the game, so little has been said on exactly what DS owners should expect from the handheld title. That is, until now.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will supposedly employ a third-person perspective when playing the game, much like the console versions, but there will be 2D animated cutscenes instead of the highly-detailed snippets found in the game for consoles. Moving your character around will be handled with the d-pad, while interacting with the game will be handled primarily with the stylus. Also, there will be a multiplayer mode allowing for up to four players to enjoy over wireless, though further details on that are not currently available.

Sounds good to us, we hope the control scheme can be pulled off. We'd like to be able to kick ass with The Force outside the comfort of our own home, as well as within in.

While the Nintendo Wii's hardware may be sub par compared to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 - and is unlikely to enjoy the full potential of three physics engines - motion control enthusiasts will be able to enjoy five exclusive levels in the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

According to Krome Studios' Ed Tucker (via CVG), "On the Wii we have places where the story veers off and we go and explore something, take the game in a different direction, like the Jedi Temple level." Krome is handling the Wii, PSP and PS2 versions of the title. No mention of exclusive content PS3 and Xbox 360 owners might have.

It's crazy crazy. It'll make your jaw drop. Watch as glass shatters, AI grabs onto the nearest object when lifted into the air and you'll see the entire environment breaks at its seams. Hidden in the depths of the Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron UMD is a special preview for the upcoming Star Wars: Force Unleashed. In this PSP action game, you'll gain control of the many powers of the Dark Side. Shoot lighting out of your hands, and use the Force to throw your enemies out of your way.

The video reveals that the PSP version will feature exclusive levels not found in the console versions, such as Cloud City. You'll be able to continue your Jedi training in the Jedi Temple. The game will be meant for "Quick Play," with tons of new options exclusive to Sony's handheld.

With tons of physics, a solid graphics engine, and loads of new features, we're newly excited for the PSP version of this new Star Wars adventure. Expect to find out more before the game's release in 2008.
