Let's call it two for the sake of argument. On one side, there are people who want all the modern conveniences, both in-game and out: save states, fast-forward and rewind in the games, and wireless controllers, high definition output, and non-finicky hardware to play them with. These are the people who like emulation the most, either through downloading ROMs or official downloadable re-releases of games.

On the other side, there are people who strive for absolute authenticity: real cartridges on real consoles, played on CRT televisions with real controllers. These are the people who, hypothetically speaking, stuff a Twin Famicom in their suitcase while on a business trip to Tokyo.

Somewhere in the middle is this thing.
Continue reading RetroN 5 and the uncomfortable tension between old and new

RetroN 5 and the uncomfortable tension between old and new originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 04 Apr 2013 18:00:00 EST. That's amazingly convenient! The only inconvenient part of it is finding the right games to buy -- and that's where we come in, with our Portabliss column. In each installment, we'll tell you about a downloadable game on the iPhone, iPad, Android device, DSi, 3DS, PSP, etc. Today: Tumble Pop.

Kid Icarus and Metroid are inextricably linked in their early history. The two NES games came out in parallel, as silver-boxed "Password Paks" in the US, and both were produced by the late Gunpei Yokoi. Also thanks to Yokoi, both saw sequels on the Game Boy that maintained the basic gameplay of the original in portable form. For Metroid 2, that meant isolation and exploration. For Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters, which has joined it on the 3DS Virtual Console, it means "really weird and difficult."

In other words, this Game Boy game is really only recommended to people who have played the NES game and therefore know what they're getting into. Virtually every element that made the NES game such an anomaly are present here, including rooms full of flying monsters or tiles that attack you in large numbers; reapers who freak the hell out and send little flying versions of themselves after you; maze-like ending levels to each world; and eggplants.
Continue reading Portabliss: Kid Icarus Of Myths and Monsters

Portabliss: Kid Icarus Of Myths and Monsters originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 25 Jul 2012 20:30:00 EST. He only plays the original Game Boy port, and admits he submitted his scores to Nintendo Power back in the day.

"I was always #1 in the Nintendo Power listings in 1988, and after they said my name had been in there too many times and wouldn't print it again, I spelled my name backwards (Evets Kainzow) and sent in a photo of my score," Wozniak said in a comment on a Gizmodo piece about him. "When I got the magazine, I'd forgotten doing this and was worried that a foreigner from the next city over (I used Saratoga instead of Los Gatos so they wouldn't catch on) had a score up in my range. I got worried but then remembered my joke. Whew! It's in some old issue of Nintendo Power magazine."

Reddit user polar0ids was quick to call Woz's bluff, but it (unsurprisingly) turns out to be a true story. As seen here in this thread, the story checks out. There's Evets Kainzow's score: 546,145 points.

Steve Wozniak secretly submitted Tetris scores to Nintendo Power originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 20 Jul 2012 17:30:00 EST. While the album is on sale for $15, a mere $5 more nets buyers a physical DVD with extra goodies, including books on creating chiptune music and an LSDJ player ROM. Songs on the album use sound chips from a variety of systems, ranging from the Game Boy to the Commodore Amiga.

With a little legwork, lovers of music players considerably larger than their pockets can enjoy said chiptunes on a Game Boy system using the ROM, as seen in the video above.

[Thanks, Nigel!]
Chiptune album puts a music player in your Game Boy originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 17 Jun 2012 21:00:00 EST. The 3DS eShop is getting not-terrible! The original downloadable games are starting to stack up (Pushmo, Mighty Switch Force), and the Virtual Console is home to a lot of interesting games -- like, for example, the Game Boy version of Bionic Commando, coming out December 29 in both North America and Europe. We aren't sure how it's able to make it to the shop when the NES Bionic Commando never could.

That's amazingly convenient! The only inconvenient part of it is finding the right games to buy -- and that's where we come in, with our Portabliss column. In each installment, we'll tell you about a downloadable game on the iPhone, iPad, Android device, DSi, 3DS, PSP, etc. Today: Balloon Kid.

Balloon Fight fans take note: Balloon Kid is the Game Boy-exclusive sequel to the original NES' delightful balloon-based actioner that you (probably) never played. I certainly hadn't, and that fact alone resonated enough with me to warrant a purchase when it arrived on the 3DS' virtual store last week.

Mechanically speaking, BK is very similar (if not identical) to the first game's single button, physics-based balloon gameplay, with the A button used to add velocity to the kid. Structurally, however, things change dramatically, with levels scrolling from right to left a la "Balloon Trip" mode from the first game, while balloons are collected in static succession along the way.
Continue reading Portabliss: Balloon Kid (3DS)

Portabliss: Balloon Kid (3DS) originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 08 Nov 2011 06:00:00 EST. We've seen our fair share of huge Minecraft constructions in the past, and we figured that by now, our jaded hearts would have lost the ability to feel the kind of awe and amazement imbued by truly impressive builds. Thankfully, Minecraft community MinecraftA2Z is here to show us just how wrong we are, by way of their terrifically huge Game Boy reconstruction.

While the Game Boy doesn't actually function, the team did create entire screens out of blocks for use as a stop-motion animation, which to us seems even more <strike>time consuming</strike> impressive. Hop past the break for another video detailing the enormous handheld's dimensions and specs.
Continue reading Massive Minecraft Game Boy plays Tetris (almost)

Massive Minecraft Game Boy plays Tetris (almost) originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 25 Sep 2011 12:30:00 EST. If you haven't spent all your money on charity gaming marathons yet, another opportunity for you to throw money at human suffering is coming up -- and this time, it's a test of both endurance and gluttony.

Starting on July 15, Pro3Studios will embark on a 72-hour marathon, in which it will attempt to catch all the Pokémon species in Pokémon FireRed, Emerald, Diamond, Pearl, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black, and White -- simultaneously. The gameplay will be streamed on a 3x3 grid, allowing you to watch it all happen in real time.

As this is going on, the group will accept donations through PayPal for the Children's Miracle Network. Those donations will allow viewers the privilege of naming some Pokémon and specifying a song for one of the players to sing on air -- and also, you know, help children.
Pokemon charity marathon aims to catch them all at the same time originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Jul 2011 23:10:00 EST. Beyond founding Q-Games and helping to father the PixelJunk series, Dylan Cuthbert has done some other extraordinary things in his years working in the game industry. He recounts some of those adventures in a recent Iwata Asks column, woefully exclusive to Japanese readers for now, but thankfully summarized by Andriasang.

But why is Cuthbert appearing in an Iwata Asks ... you ask? Because he helped create several of Nintendo's major Star Fox titles, of course (including the original), and he's heading up development of Star Fox 64 3D as director. Cuthbert actually didn't work on the Nintendo 64 title, as he had left Nintendo and was busy working on Blasto for Sony's PlayStation at the time.

Also detailed in the piece is an interesting fact about how Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto learned how to speak English. When Cuthbert began working at Nintendo, he had only a rudimentary grasp on the Japanese language -- after initially impressing staff during a visit when he was 18 to show off a 3D Game Boy engine, he was hired on, regardless of language skills. Miyamoto had an equally unimpressive grasp on English at the time, and it seems that the two worked together to help each other out. Miyamoto is said to have had a particularly hard time <strike>in</strike> <strike>by</strike> <strike>of</strike> with prepositions. We feel your pain.
Iwata Asks how Miyamoto learned English originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 Jul 2011 13:20:00 EST. Dan Fornace recently published a new trailer and demo for his long-time pet project: A Game Boy-style "demake" of the Smash Bros. franchise titled Super Smash Land. Real champions don't ask "Why?" when shown a completely awesome, albeit totally impractical piece of technological wizardry. Take, for instance, Flashing LEDs' latest creation: An oscilloscope that displays Game Boy games. Useful? Absolutely not. Radical? We like to think so.
Continue reading Game Boy games get hacked onto an oscilloscope

Game Boy games get hacked onto an oscilloscope originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 13 Feb 2011 19:30:00 EST. As has been requested for the original DS and DSi since time immemorial (2004), Nintendo will offer downloadable Game Boy and Game Boy Color games on the 3DS, through a VIrtual Console-style store.

In addition, as shown at E3, Nintendo will offer 3D-ified versions of classics like Xevious.

Update: The transcript from Nintendo's conference last night show that Iwata specified games from the Game Boy and Game Boy Color -- not Advance. At least, not yet. We apologize for the confusion.
3DS has a Game Boy/ Game Boy Color Virtual Console [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 01:43:00 EST. We can't imagine why anyone would want to play a Game Boy game via their NES -- aside from the cool factor, that is. You can still find a Game Boy player relatively cheap, hook it up to your GameCube and get your handheld-on-TV fix that. But we digress.

Nintendo Age forum user bunnyboy is responsible for the Frankensteinian concoction of cool you see above: the NES RetroVision. It follows the same principles of the Super Game Boy, except in that it functions with the NES. By cramming the guts of a Game Boy into an NES cart, bunnyboy uses a custom board to translate the Game Boy graphics into a format understood by the NES. Utilizing a second controller, you can then change the border and colors displayed on-screen.

There isn't a page or any way to order one of these kits just yet, though bunnyboy promises that he'll eventually have some for sale. If you want one, you're going to have to fork over $130 plus shipping.
In this day and age, if you come upon a yard sale that isn't trying to unload at least one Game Boy, then those people probably weren't really into portable gaming. No, really -- those people exist!

We tell you this because we have a great idea should you ever come across a Game Boy at one of these slices of Americana: the Tron Boy. The pictured mod by Thretris was created to celebrate the release of 8 Bit Weapon's Tron chiptune album (ZIP file link) and does a good job of plucking our heartstrings on two distinct fronts. It makes us pine for those days of playing Tetris on the bus to school and the first time we saw Jeff Bridges kicking some ass with a disc. Those were the days.

... great, now we have a hankerin' to play some Tetris. Thanks, Thretris!
Click to N-Ter the gallery
Dylan Cuthbert's Q-Games has returned to the world of X, a Game Boy game designed by Nintendo and Cuthbert's Argonaut Software. Q-Games and Nintendo have created X-Scape, a DSiWare sequel to the 3D space tank game (coincidentally, "3D Space Tank" is the Australian title for X-Scape).

Shortly before the announcement of the DSiWare title's May 31 release date, we spoke to Cuthbert, along with Assistant Director Kazushi Maeta and Kazuyuki Gofuku, in charge of Development Coordination for the title at Nintendo, about resurrecting the old franchise, the freedom of downloadable software, and, yes, the secret "Totaka's Song" first heard in X.
If so, then this modded Game Boy -- as in the large, boxy "released in 1989" Game Boy -- should really fit the bill. Flickr user CRTdrone has modded an original Game Boy to play every flavor of Game Boy title, including Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance and, of course, original Game Boy. According to the description, the mod relies on the guts of a Game Boy Advance SP and all the buttons, the rechargeable battery and even the headphone jack are in working order. The shoulder buttons, if you're wondering, have been relegated to tiny buttons on either side of unit.

The creator will be making "a couple more" and possibly documenting the process. So stay tuned if you want to make one of these bad boys for yourself.
The increasingly popular game-trading service Goozex is expanding its capabilities to encompass the game platforms of yesteryear. New to the site is an option to trade NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Genesis, Sega CD, and Atari 2600 amongst the site's growing user base. Sadly, there's still no support for our precious Virtual Boy. Now we'll never be able to get our hands on that copy of Teleroboxer we've always dreamed of owning.

There's already a ton of games from each platform up for trading on Goozex right now. Like, good games. Not the nine pathetic copies of WCW Mayhem which comprise your local used games store's N64 selection.
Goozex now accepts SNES, Genesis and other retro game trades originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 31 Mar 2010 19:40:00 EST. Despite what you may assume, we're not the sort of people who'd buy ourselves a steampunk Game Boy like the Thretris-created model you see above (see it in action after the break). We are, however, the sort of people who'd use our popular internet website to politely request that our readers buy said Game Boy from eBay and send it to us for a holiday of their choice. It probably seems a little ethically dicey to the layman, but ethics are really complicated (they have whole college courses about them!) so you shouldn't feel too bad about yourself for not understanding.

Hey, speaking of things you should or shouldn't do, did you bid on that steampunk Game Boy yet?
Click to Enker the gallery
Capcom will make downloadable Special Stages available in Mega Man 10 throughout April, for one dollar each. Should you make it to the end of each stage, you'll meet some musically-named bosses that will only be recognizable if you're a huge Mega Man nerd! The three stages feature the return of the Mega Man Killers, a group of bosses from the Game Boy Mega Man games.

Special Stage 1, available the week of April 5, features Enker from the first portable Mega Man game, a robot with the ability to absorb and reflect shots. Special Stage 2 features Mega Man III's Punk, who uses a large spinning weapon called the Screw Crusher, and Special Stage 3 includes Ballade from Mega Man IV, who uses the explosive Ballade Cracker. Both Special Stage 2 and 3 will be released the week of April 26.

In addition to revealing its latest financial figures, Nintendo has released some interesting facts about its two star performers, the Wii and DS. As revealed in the financials, the Wii has sold over 67 million units since its launch in 2006. Putting that in context, Nintendo reveals that the original Nintendo Entertainment System sold 61.91 million units in its lifetime, which now makes the Wii the company's most successful console of all time. As for the DS, it has now sold 125.13 million units, surpassing Game Boy and Game Boy Color lifetime sales of 118.69 million units. That makes the DS Nintendo's most successful piece of hardware ever.

It's important to point out that Nintendo counts all four iterations of the DS in its life-to-date sales numbers. Considering each version has a number of improvements over previous versions, we're sure there's plenty of overlap among consumers. Still, there's no denying that Nintendo's latest hardware lineup has been incredibly successful, even if it was slightly less successful in 2009.
Nintendo's most iconic foray into the handheld gaming market is finally being recognized as "an innovator" that "changed the way people play electronic games" by being inducted into Strong National Museum of Play's Toy Hall of Fame. Among twelve finalists, the Game Boy joins the Big Wheel and the ball to be added to the list of important cultural toys.

Yes, the ball is just now being inducted into the hall of fame, meaning Nintendo's handheld made the cut in two decades, while the ball had been clawing for a spot since the days of Ancient Egypt. In your face, Ozymandias.
It's been over a year since we last heard rumors of a re-Vamped Castlevania installment on the WiiWare service -- now, a new ESRB listing has rekindled the flames of conjecture. The board recently gave a Teen rating to Castlevania the Adventure ReBirth for the Wii -- as you may have noticed, it shares the suffix applied to the similarly renovated Gradius ReBirth and Contra ReBirth, both of which surfaced on Nintendo's download platform this year.

According to the ESRB rating, the game will finally deliver the "side-scrolling action" which classic 'Vania fans have been clamoring for. If it's based off the Game Boy title of the same name, our only request is that they smooth out the game's unscalable difficulty curve. To this day, we're not sure that game has a second level.
According to Kombo's "man on the scene," only first-party Nintendo titles will be offered at first.

Other details from the event: Apparently, North American DSiWare includes three pricing levels: free, 500 Points, and 800 Points, which differs from the Japanese model in that there's no 200 Point category. The event seemingly confirms the Mario and Animal Crossing calculators for North America as well, though both of those are in the 200 Point category in Japan.

Of course, like all news that comes from something heard at GameStop, take this with as much salt as you can find.

Rumor: Downloadable Game Boy and GBA games as DSiWare originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Mar 2009 16:45:00 EST. Michael "Bibin" Moffitt had a dream. He imagined a world where a man could enjoy Tetris on his Game Boy Pocket in a dark room, without the need for odd peripheral add-on devices or, uh, a lamp. As you can see above, Michael decided to mod his Game Boy Pocket with a backlit screen.

It's not the most impressive mod in the world, but we have to give the man credit where it's due. He set his mind to something, and he did it. Almost makes us want to get back to that stamp collection we've neglected for years.

[Via Engadget]
Game Boy Pocket mod lets the games continue after dark originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 05 Jan 2009 17:00:00 EST. The DS has been quite the success for Nintendo since it released. So successful, in fact, that shipments for the handheld worldwide have bested that of Nintendo's Game Boy Advance, as the DS has shipped 84.33 million units by the end of September 2008 (GBA lifetime shipments come in at 81.36 million units). Impressive, sure, but there's still higher places the handheld can climb on Mt. Awesome Accomplishments.

While besting the GBA record is noteworthy, the record still goes to the original Game Boy, which has done 118.69 million units. This figure includes the Game Boy Color, as well.
DS shipments surpass Game Boy Advance originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 30 Oct 2008 16:44:00 EST. Even after Nintendo's presentation came and went, Kid Icarus-free, the rumors and Casamassina's insistence had us convinced that Nintendo was just going to spring it on us at any moment; an announcement would come over the loudspeaker on the show floor or something.

In the absence of a new Wii Kid Icarus sequel, I'd be happy to play the other Kid Icarus sequel, Of Myths and Monsters, released on the Game Boy in 1991. As a bonus, it's guaranteed not to be a terrible 3D reimagining.
Continue reading Virtually Overlooked: Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters

Virtually Overlooked: Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Oct 2008 16:30:00 EST. The Nintendo Channel updated with fresh videos today, most important of which is a gameplay video showing off Nintendo's new WiiWare title, Art Style: Orbient. Our own JC noted that the title looked a lot like Orbital, a Bit Generations game for the GBA. Sure enough, it is!

Head past the break for some gameplay footage of Nintendo's new game.
Continue reading What is Art Style: Orbient? It's been awhile since we thought about our dearly departed friend, the GBA. It burst on the scene and gave us an amazing Castlevania game, then got itself redesigned to the awesome GBA SP you see above you, complete with brighter screen and awesome clamshell design. Then we got the ... GBA Micro.

What fond memories do you have of your GBA? What was your favorite GBA game to play? What model did you have? Did you hold onto it after you upgraded to a DS?
DS Daily: Remembering our old friend, the GBA originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 Sep 2008 09:00:00 EST. What the heck?! This is cool!" vein to come out of SXSW film festival earlier this year was Blip Festival: Reformat The Planet. It's all about chiptune music and the performers, and is beautifully shot. It's hard to imagine Nintendo thinking people would be hacking into their Game Boys in order to create full-fledged concerts, concerts that would one day spark a feature documentary and an entire genre of music.

For one week, you can watch the impressive documentary at Pitchfork.tv. It's even broken up into bite-sized chapters for you. Give it a looksee and you'll find yourself toe-tapping along to the addictive 8-bit music throughout the film. It's beaten Wizard Rock as our current favorite geek music of choice.

[Thanks, Eliot]
Watch the Blip Festival documentary free for one week originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 03:00:00 EST. You would think DS, no? That's exactly what we thought, as the handheld is home to more amazing third-party games than any other console in recent memory, but that is not the case. It turns out, the SNES was the best Nintendo console for third-party publishers. Who would've known?

Keep in mind, though, that this is merely based on Aeropause's own evaluation and may not be representative of how much money publishers made on each system, or the quality of the titles they released on said platform. It's more or less based on an article in the latest Nintendo Power where the staff ranked their top 20 games for each Nintendo system.

What do you all think? Which Nintendo system had the greatest batch of stellar third-party titles in your eyes? We're going to stick with DS. It seems like a no-brainer to us.
Which Nintendo system favored third-party publishers the most? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 29 Jul 2008 18:00:00 EST. One dentist practice is pioneering a new, better way to handle folks stuck in the waiting room. As seen above, courtesy of flickr user tarabrown, the choice between magazines and some sweet handhelds is available to folks who find themselves waiting on their dentist. No word in the way of what games are available, but this is just an all-around great idea.

Seriously, for how cheap a DS is (or an original GBA, for that matter), we imagine a practice could just snag a copy of Brain Age and Nintendogs and have their waiting room content and at ease while they, uh ... wait. Might help with those few who become pretty irate when forced to park it in the waiting room.

According to Tara, the practice is run by one Dr. Jade Kim and located in Seattle, WA. You can check out the website right here. Apparently, the DS had Mario Kart DS in there.

This week sees the commencement of E3, the Super Bowl for gamers. On Tuesday, Nintendo will announce all of its big plans for the rest of the year, sending fanboys and fangirls alike into a frenzy. And while others choose to give us predictions of what we will see, here is the much more important information: things that we won't be seeing.

5. The Game Boy Ultra - Around the time that the DS was first announced, Nintendo made a point to clarify that the new dual-screened portable was more of a "third pillar" than the next installment in the Game Boy line. But then the DS started printing money ... lots and lots of it. Regardless, in an effort to stay true to their word (as they always do), Nintendo will unveil the Game Boy Ultra. The sleek handheld will feature a small but crisp widescreen display showcasing wonderful GameCube-esque graphics. In fact, it will be backwards-compatible with all GameCube games, using the same 8cm discs as Nintendo's last-gen console. Also, similar to the PSP's remote play, the Game Boy Ultra will connect to the Wii and allow data transfers to an SD card. This will allow Virtual Console and select WiiWare games to be played on the go. And since Nintendo plans to keep DS owners in agony by not announcing New Super Mario Bros. 2, they will reveal that the Game Boy Ultra will ship packaged with a free copy of Super Mario Bros. Ultra.

Survey Says: Not necessary; Contra 4 removes the need for any other portable game or system.

Continue reading Top 5: Things We Won't See at E3

Top 5: Things We Won't See at E3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 14 Jul 2008 14:00:00 EST. Will there be a new DS? A new handheld altogether? A new array of DS Lite colors instead? Nearly anything is possible, and while we wait, bouncing up and down on our toes and struggling to remember to breathe through the excitement, it's a good time to look back at the history of Nintendo's handhelds. From the extensive Game & Watch collection to a few portables you may have forgotten, Nintendo has a rich and storied handheld history, and it's one we celebrate every day -- just not like this.

If you're not familiar with Two Tribes, then you haven't ever played Toki Tori or Worms: Open Warfare 2. Aside from the game's recent release on WiiWare, it was also available on the Game Boy Color. They also did a game on the GBA called Three Tribes.

But, we digress. This new title, which is nothing more than some concept art right now, promises "a unique gameplay experience" in an on-rail shooter. Two Tribes also says that the controls will be accessible, as "average players will be able to complete the game while seasoned players will be motivated to go for higher scores and completion rates."

Though we try to keep our praise of public property vandalism to a minimum, there are some instances when we can't help but clap in our seats, humorless, like Orson Welles in Citizen Kane. This week's edition of The DS Life is one of those instances, our subject being a magnificent bit of street art spotted in Darmstadt, Germany and photographed by Joachim S. Müller. Say ten Hail Marys and bring yourself past the post break for the photo.
Continue reading The DS Life: Out of habit

The DS Life: Out of habit originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 Jul 2008 22:00:00 EST. Have a desire to wear your love for space invaders on your sleeve (or that moldy merit badge sash), or cram your eye shadow and lip gloss into a a zippered little purse? Fear no more, 'Stiqeteers, for you can have both. Handmade to boot! I Don't Like Mondays has some Emma Ferguson hand-stitched and embroidered retro designs, including these two gaming throwbacks and a Mac Bomb.

Can a man carry a purse and maintain some dignity? It hardly seems fair, because women can wear merit badges without catcalls and cries of "NIce manbag!" Maybe we can cram it down into our tough-looking computer bags and carry pencils in it.

[Thanks Colin!]
Accessorize your gamer with retro badges and a purse originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 24 Jun 2008 21:00:00 EST.
