If you're looking to play some old NES games while your WiiPad looks the part, Nintendo officially launched the Virtual Console on Wii U at the end of April. The initial launch list is pretty slim, but Ape Inc. and HAL Laboratory's beloved SNES RPG, Earthbound, is on the way.
Wii U Famicom skin dresses your WiiPad in red and gold originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 09 May 2013 17:00:00 EST. The latest issue of the Official Nintendo Magazine reveals this tidbit, according to Nintendo Insider. The issue is due on UK newsstands in two days.

The port also features Wii U Pro Controller support, and GamePad touchscreen-based inventory management. In ONM's interview, producer Tsukasa Takenaka says "There's a joke going around in Japan at the moment about using Off TV Play to play your Wii U games on the Bullet Train, as long as you get on of the seats with a power outlet, so we wanted to make sure Bullet Train play was possible with Revelations."

Revelations is also coming out on PS3, Xbox, and PC; those won't have off-TV play for obvious reasons. It was originally released on 3DS, where it only had off-TV play.
Report: Resident Evil: Revelations features off-TV play on Wii U originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Feb 2013 11:00:00 EST. At a demo event last week, I spoke with Double Fine's Chris Remo and got our first glimpse at The Cave on Wii U.

Above, you can see how the WiiPad plays into the game. It's essentially a glorified character selector and camera controller - by tapping on a character, you'll jump to them; by tapping on a character twice, you can switch the camera focus to them. In The Cave, characters cannot move independently off-screen.

"So other than that, it pretty much plays like all the other versions," Double Fine's Remo told me. "We did work really hard to ensure that visually everything you're seeing is identical to the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, so there's no downscaling, there's nothing going on that is not up to par with the other next-gen systems. There's nothing super wacky going on, but it's a completely full-featured version of the game."

The Cave launches on Wii U next year.
The Cave on Wii U uses GamePad for camera and character switching originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 17 Dec 2012 14:15:00 EST. You just have to win an eBay auction. Bidding is only up to $91,300 right now - it's up to you to decide if that's worth paying for a one-of-a-kind work that immortalizes the excitement of the Wii U launch, and imitates the cardboard mockups used by the Miiverse team!

We suspect that the high bids are as fake as the GamePad. There's already a history of retracted bids, from $10,000 up to $99,999, all explained as "Entered wrong amount." We suspect every single person who has bid on this has entered the wrong amount.
Cardboard Wii U GamePad going for way too much on eBay originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 26 Nov 2012 10:15:00 EST. The tear down reveals the Wii U is powered by a multi-chip module - a PowerPC-based CPU - built using IBM's 45-nanometer manufacturing method; the GPU is comparable to AMD's RV7xx series of cards and shares 2GB of DDR3 RAM with the CPU.

As for power consumption, the Wii U doesn't take much, drawing 32.8 watts of power when booting up the console's dashboard. In testing New Super Mario Bros. U, Shimpi discovered the console draws only 33 watts of power during gameplay; less required energy than any other home video game console on the market right now. Now maybe Green Peace will ease up a little on Mario's masters?
A glut of Wii U guts and specs revealed originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 19 Nov 2012 18:00:00 EST. It promises to foster some interesting, asymmetrical gameplay innovations, but one of its best features is a bit more obvious. The GamePad's screen is a perfect gaming display, and many Wii U games can be played directly on tablet itself, no television required.

Handheld gaming is certainly nothing new, but the ability to play full-fledged console games without hogging the TV is a surprisingly delightful feature we've become addicted to. Last week the company disclosed that Wii U is launching in North America without additional GamePads available at retail, and that damaged GamePads can be replaced via Nintendo's customer service. Today, however, Nintendo told Polygon this replacement service isn't free.

Nintendo didn't disclose any further details, nor did the company elaborate on the future price of additional GamePads when those become available. In Japan, an additional GamePad is retail priced at ¥13,440 ($173). The Wii U launches in North America on November 18, priced at $300 for the 8GB Basic set and $350 for the 32GB Premium set.
Nintendo: Replacement GamePads are gonna cost you originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 18 Sep 2012 10:40:00 EST. Japanese Wii U owners will eventually be able to purchase extra WiiPads for ¥13,440 ($173), while Americans have not been given a price or separate release date yet.

"Through the launch window, there are no games that leverage a second controller," Nintendo of America CEO Reggie Fils-Aime told Engadget. "And so, during the launch window here in NOA territories, we will not be selling at retail a second gamepad. But certainly, when the games come out, we'll be making that accessory available."

We suppose that wanting to future-proof your living room against the inevitable games that will support two WiiPads could be a valid reason for buying one right now, but a more likely scenario is one involving children, permanent markers and that stylus-driven touchscreen. Anyone looking to replace a damaged or otherwise undesirable WiiPad will need to contact Nintendo customer support when the times comes.
Wii U WiiPads won't be sold separately at launch in US, will be later on originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 13 Sep 2012 18:52:00 EST. With the Wikipad slated to arrive in time for the holidays, Archos has announced its own gaming tablet, simply named GamePad. The GamePad sports a 7-inch screen and physical controls, including face buttons, shoulder buttons, a D-pad and what appear to be a pair of adorable analog nubbins.

As for specs, the tablet comes packing Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and a Mali 400mp quad-core GPU. The unit also features a patented technology that allows virtual controls to be mapped to the physical controls, with Archos boasting that "over a thousand" Android apps are already compatible.

The GamePad will be available by the end of the year for less than €150 ($188). Engadget reports that it will ship simultaneously in both Europe and the US.
Continue reading Archos reveals 7-inch Android GamePad tablet

Archos reveals 7-inch Android GamePad tablet originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 30 Aug 2012 03:15:00 EST. Shaking the GamePad activates the game's Touch Screen Shooting, a feature that places a soccer net on the handheld screen for players to tap, guiding their shots into the net with more precision.

The Wii U version's co-op mode allows four players to take to the field while another player uses the GamePad to manage the action using Team Management Control as well. FIFA 13 for Wii U will continue to use the series' Player Impact Engine, and is slated to launch alongside the system later this year.
FIFA 13 launching with Wii U, gets all touchy originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 02 Aug 2012 17:30:00 EST.
Not to be confused with iCade's recently announced official controller, Ben Heck's preemptive strike against iCade's $80 enclosure is made possible through reverse-engineering the original iCade unit. We suppose Heck's version isn't a more prudent alternative, but that doesn't make a magician's work any less interesting.

Heck's game pad features eight face buttons, a pair of triggers on the top and a d-pad on the left side. It's more function than form but, as you can see, it gets the job done.
Ben Heck turns an iCade into an iPhone gamepad before iCade can originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 12 Jan 2012 01:00:00 EST.
The idea of a gamepad sticking out of your iPhone may be hilarious, but it's still not as funny as attempting to play Mega Man 2 with a virtual d-pad. The 60beat Gamepad connects to an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad through the headphone jack, providing the complete set of console controls to any supported iOS app -- shoulder buttons, analog sticks, and all.

At the moment, that list of supported iOS apps is pretty small (just Bugdom 2 and Aftermath), making the controller perfect for someone who either loves those games or is banking on more support in the future.
60beat creates a full gamepad for iOS devices originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 Dec 2011 13:15:00 EST. Blizzard isn't ready to announce any kind of console version of Diablo 3 -- as in all things, it's taking its sweet damn time -- but game director Jay Wilson is open to discussing the results of the company's console "experiments."

Blizzard has been conducting said experiments, Wilson said, because "we feel that the controls and the style of the game lend itself to a console." And the tests have been successful. "With some of our early experiments in putting a direct control scheme into the game via a 360-like analogue controller, I've been 'Oh this feels even better, with direct control...'"

But Blizzard still isn't officially announcing this apparently better functionality for the game, either in the form of a console release or gamepad support for the existing PC version. Wilson made a conditional announcement, however: "I can pretty much guarantee that if we decide to do a console version that we will look to support a pad on the PC," he said. It's the Xbox controller with a twist! As indicated by our source, Microsoft has announced a redesigned Xbox 360 wireless controller. The new gamepad will debut in a matte silver color with gray-toned face buttons and analog sticks with a more dramatic concave shape. Key to the new design is a "transforming" D-pad that changes from a semi-flush disc to a pop-out plus sign by twisting the D-pad clockwise. (Check out Major Nelson demonstrating the transformation in the video after the break.)

Microsoft offers this suggestion for how you might use the two D-pad configurations: "Select the traditional plus for distinct cardinal direction movement in games like Halo: Reach to change weapons and perform complicated combinations and deadly finishing moves in Street Fighter games, or rotate the D-pad to the disc format for sweeping motions in games such as Pro Evolution Soccer 2011."

The redesigned controller will only be available with the Play & Charge Kit. The bundle will launch on November 9 for $64.99.
We don't do a lot of critiquing of controllers, we know, but as stacks of them continue to pile up at HQ, it occurred to us that you might be as daunted in the store aisle as we are staring at this pile of plastic. So, in the spirit of making you a more informed consumer, here's a look at the Rocketfish Rapid Fire PS3 controller.
After an erroneous rumor concerning an Xbox 360 motion-sensing controller prototype made the internet rounds yesterday (turns out it was a known Wiimote prototype), the folks at TeamXbox claim to know a little something something and - after said rumor made waves - felt compelled to share with us a little early. They said, "TeamXbox.com can confirm that Microsoft has been researching alternative input technologies for the last two years" including motion-sensing technology ala the Wiimote or Sixaxis.

They also note that Microsoft is specifically looking to improve the right-analog stick (request to MS: fix the D-pad while you're at it), and TeamXbox will "bring you a real list of next-generation Xbox controller prototypes soon." We skipped the previous rumor but since TeamXbox is putting their neck out on this one, we're inclined to give it a little more weight. We'll know if they're right soon enough.
Rumorang: Microsoft toying with motion-sensitive controller originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 28 Dec 2007 19:20:00 EST. As pictured, a revision could possibly follow the offset analogue stick alignment currently used by Microsoft for Xbox 360 gamepads (and also by Nintendo for Gamecube). Of course, this crude Photoshop job is hardly confirmation of that design choice, as clearly the creator has simply swapped the d-pad and left stick (notice the indented d-pad outline behind the repositioned analogue control). Did the page-maker pull from a shoddy Google Images source or what?

Update: Remember Charlie Tang's redesign from our January 2006 contest...?

Update 2: Sony PR director Dave Karraker calls it a "bad artist rendering" that's in the process of being corrected. The patent was filed in 1998 (granted in 2001), and Fenner is now seeking compensation for damages it claims to have incurred as a result of the violations.

Ars Technica did some digging and discovered that Fenner filed a pair of similar lawsuits in the past against several other large companies. Both suits were settled out of court, with one source citing a "favorable result" for Fenner. Can Fenner keep its hot streak going? It could be years before we know that answer.

[Thanks, Kiel]

Update: This story is a duplicate of an earlier post. The explanation was vague: "All PS3 games are programmed for the Sixaxis which doesn't have force feedback, therefore the force feedback in the wheels won't be recognized."

Perhaps Sony misspoke. There aren't any console gamepads that support the type of force feedback technology built into many top-line racing wheels, so when this feature is enabled in racing games, it's an additional programming step that only benefits players using an appropriate racing wheel -- it simply doesn't matter that Sixaxis lacks full force feedback (or even simple rumble feedback). If Sony is actively dissuading developers from coding in force feedback support for racing wheels compatible with PS3, it has nothing to do with what Sixaxis lacks ... then again, it might have everything to do with what Sixaxis lacks.

If indeed Immersion technologies like rumble and force feedback are never be supported by Sony's new console it's almost certainly the result of the 2003 lawsuit brought against Sony by Immersion, and the judge's denial of Sony's subsequent appeal.
PS3 won't support force feedback wheels originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 05 Jan 2007 19:26:00 EST. Before you go digging around for your old gamepads, consider that each adapter costs $19 (plus $6 S&H per order), roughly equaling the cost of Nintendo's Classic Controller, which offers greater compatibility and semi-wireless freedom.

RetroZone will begin shipping the NES adapter in January, followed by the SNES adapter shortly thereafter. There's only one way to crown a king in the battle for world's smallest portable USB gamepad ... a size off!

The USB Pocket GamePad measures 3.93x1.81x0.47 inches, and weighs only 0.07 pounds. Total volume: 3.34 cubic inches!

The Buffalo USB Micro-pad measures 3.93x1.85x0.47 inches, and weights only 0.11 pounds. Total volume: 3.42 cubic inches!

It was a close battle, but the cleverly-titled USB Pocket GamePad took the lead. As much as size matters, we'll concede there are other distinctions to be made. For example, the Buffalo comes in two varieties, one with the classic D-pad and another with a PSP-style thumb-nub (pictured above). But, uh, that's about it. Otherwise, we're talking about the same button arrangement, layout and, for the most part, ergonomics. So the real question is price and availability which, alas, we don't have for the Buffalo USB Micro-pad yet.

[Via Engadget]
Mini USB gamepad for those with small hands originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 Sep 2006 10:45:00 EST. We were in love. Our shotgun wedding with the Xbox 360 gamepad and subsequent months of marital bliss have come crashing down. We've had our first fight ... err, 2D fighting game that is.

Anyone who's been playing the recently released Street Fighter II on XBLA has undoubtedly noticed the Xbox 360's D-pad seriously cramps your combos. Fear not DIY-friendly gamers, there is a solution: Don't use the Xbox 360 gamepad. Remember the Sega Saturn, geared for 2D in a world of 3D consoles? The good news is the Saturn's gamepad has a well respected D-pad and, with some soldering skills, you can start rocking it on Xbox Live.

Here's how it works: Saturn controller gets plugged into a breadboard connected to a gutted Xbox 360 controller, so the whole thing is wireless (sort of). Fine, so this isn't the most attractive hack, but it illustrates a demand for an alternative gamepad. How long before some enterprising peripheral company makes a wireless Xbox Live Arcade pad?

[Via b&b&p&s]
360 D-pad sucking? He didn't exclude the Xbox 360 controller's design from criticism, mentioning that his 14-year old daughter found the controller somewhat confusing. Naturally, there was a point to his self-criticism; later on in the podcast he says that Microsoft is "doing a lot of stuff there. Nothing that we're ready to talk about, and we're not going to force anything that is not going to be intuitive and innovative."

The most obvious conclusion to make from this statement would be that Microsoft is working on a new, simplified controller, which may or may not "borrow" the Wiimote's defining feature, although the part where Moore says that "[Microsoft is] not going to force anything that is not going to be... innovative" could suggest that simply slapping a motion sensor inside an Xbox 360 pad isn't on the cards.

British tech magazine T3 points out that the company could possibly be working on a simplified controller--to be sold in parallel with the main Xbox 360 pad--designed specifically for Xbox Live Arcade games. The magazine reasons that the company won't want to make the Xbox 360 pad's ergonomic design obsolete any time soon, which lends credence to the possibility of a simplified controller designed to play simple games to compliment the "hardcore" 360 gamepad.

[Via Engadget]
Microsoft to pull a PS3, place motion sensors in Xbox 360 pad? originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 26 Jun 2006 17:25:00 EST. In addition to the zapper, Virtual Console gamepad, and different colored Wiimotes, Nintendo was showing replica Genesis, N64, SNES, TG16, and NES controllers that were compatible with the Wii behind closed doors during E3. This is a rumor at the moment, but honestly sounds like a good idea, that is if they have some sort of adapter available for the original controllers for these systems and don't make it mandatory for the consumer to purchase a new retro controller to be used for each system.

What say you fine readers?

[Via Gamers Reports]
Rumor: Nintendo holding back more controllers originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 13 Jun 2006 12:00:00 EST. Here are some reactions we got:

David Edery: Game Tycoon
It's certainly a shame to lose something where rumble matters in the design context. Rumble has always felt like icing to me; it's not crucial. Not having the motion sensing at all, that's a huge problem. I'd be much more worried about Microsoft, frankly. Rumble has never mattered to me that much. I think it'll hurt them, but I don't know how much. I don't think it's a huge deal. People want to move, though. Not having [motion sensing] when others do have it, will be a huge disadvantage.

Jessie: GamerSurvival
"It'll hurt; I've heard a lot of people upset [over the decision]."

David Reid: VP Marketing for GameTap
I've never thought of it as a big deal. That's me personally. There was a time when i was deep in the weeds at Xbox when we were like, "do we pay for one motor or two motors?" I think the bigger story is a $499 box that doesn't have HDMI, doesn't have Wi-Fi, doesn't have a memory unit. I think lack of rumble is the least of their problems. Those are really smart guys, they've got a really great business, I'm sure they know what they're doing but it really struck me as odd.

Delila: OnTheXbox.com
"[The rumble] adds to the experience, feeling the explosions for example. It's gonna hurt them."

Roman: Industry Analyst
[Lack of rumble] is not the main thing that's going to hurt them. To me they're the loser of the show. I'm very concerned actually. Rumble is marginal compared to other issues.

Cesar: Gamerscore
"Not as much as the price."

See also:
E3 Vox Populi: What are your thoughts on the PS3 prices?
E3 Vox Populi: Who had the best press conference?

[Update 1: fixed horrible, horrible typos. What is the Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows? From the doc:

"Gamers can get the most out of current and future Xbox 360 wireless accessories with the new Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows. By plugging the compact receiver into a USB 2.0 port on the PC, the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, Xbox 360 Wireless Headset and Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel can be used on a second platform (ERP TBA)."

That means you won't need to get the (now increasingly marginalized) wired 360 controller if you want to use it with your PC. Question is, how long before the Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows gets support for other operating systems?

See also:
360's Mem Unit getting a bump to 256MB?

Read - Xbox.com's Xbox 360 Accessories (.doc)
Use 360 wireless peripherals with a PC originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 11 May 2006 20:00:00 EST. After being replaced by its smaller, sexier cousin, Type S,the Duke has assumed its rightful throne on lists of terrible controller design everywhere. Apparently, some gamerswould rather die than see this happen!

One gamer, for example, replaced the analog thumbsticks on his 360controller with the counterparts from the Duke. He didn't go so far as to use the horrible D-pad, so he used theType-S' for that. The end result is what you see above: a Frankenstein's monster of a controller, animated by moresheer madness than any science we know of.

[Via del.icio.us]
Long live the Duke! 360 controller gets transplant originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 13 Mar 2006 23:00:00 EST. The Horipad EX Turbo (built by Hori, natch) features three different turbo settings for the four face buttons,it's "officially lisensed [sic] for Xbox 360" and it will EXcel the EXcellent EXperience with EXcitement. Oh,and it's going for about $30 US.

The inclusion of features like turbo switches always makes me roll my eyes. They seem anachronistic, a holdover from third-party controllers in the NES days. What is turbo going to do for aplayer in Halo? He writes, "Bill-of-material estimates for the wireless controller come in at around $11, or 22 percentof the retail price for the product--a far cry from the negative margin of the console itself."

Assembly, packaging, marketing, and shipping are all other factors not considered here, though it's clear Microsoftintends to use peripheral sales--in addition to software licensing fees--to recoup the massive loss they face withevery console sale. A small consolation to anyone who's felt that $50 sting at the cash register. They're lucky thecontroller is as close to perfect as we've experienced. And at $28.81,the Pocket GamePad is a little steep.

[Thanks, Hector]

[UPDATE: Apologies, it was 0.07pounds, not grams. 0.07 grams would have been a seriously lightweight controller!]
Continue reading Mini folding USB gamepad

Mini folding USB gamepad originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 09 Feb 2006 10:45:00 EST. The latest issue of Wired has a bit on the Periborg line of gamingperipherals (part peripheral, part cyborg). Pictured above is the "Ore Commander," a finger mounted vibratorattached to a battery pack designed to help gamers press buttons faster ("20 times a second"). Even strangeris the "Shock-C," a finger mounted spoon and fork, designed to help gamers keep their thumbs from gettinggreasy.

Eiji Morikawa, the 28-year-old electrical engineer and designer of the Periborg devices, explainedthe creations saying, "Our definition of 'controller' is too rigid." While there is some truth to thiscontention, we imagine you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who thought this was a good idea.

Check outEngadget on the Periborg peripherals: 1, 2, or watchvideo footage, if youdare!

[Via pasta andvinegar]
PeriBorg finger-vibrator and fork/spoon combo originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 08 Feb 2006 01:00:00 EST.
