Thirteen uncut, unedited minutes of God of War III's E3 demo

You see this guy up here? His name is Kratos, and when you click past the break, you're going to see him kill lots of things ... for 13 minutes. G4 has managed to get a direct-feed capture of the entire God of War III demo from E3. Perhaps now you'll see why we called the game "God of War, in HD." (And no, that's not considered a bad thing.)

Pay attention to some of our favorite new moves: the ability to grab an enemy and use him as a battering ram, and the ability to burst through crowds of enemies. Being able to take control of a cyclops is pretty cool as well. Those of you that watch the video in HD will be able to truly appreciate the gruesome finishing moves the sick, disturbed people at Santa Monica Studios have added to this game. Due to the gore, AOL Legal requires us to remind you this footage is for our audience aged 17 and up. So set your birthday to January 1, 1901 and enjoy the footage after the break.

Hands-on: God of War III

For the lazy, here's the short preview: it's God of War, in HD.

God of War III is the talk of many here at E3. Why wouldn't it? The solid graphics, the over-the-top gore, the visceral gameplay -- and did I mention the over-the-top gore -- make God of War III one of the most polished and fun games available at the show floor. Yet in spite of its successes, one can't help but think it feels a little too familiar. Perhaps, in many ways, God of War III is playing it a bit too safe, resting on the laurels of its predecessors.

That's not a bad thing per se, but we are an industry that champions innovation. Although God of War III doesn't stray far from the mold, it's still incredible fun and quite possibly the most gut-wretchingly violent game ever created. The creative team behind Kratos' latest are truly sick, devising an endless stream of creative deaths for enemies to suffer. Seeing someone's eye get ripped out may sound cool in SD, but God of War III makes sure you see every gory detail. The camera zooms in, proud to showcase the mutilation of the meticulously modeled and designed characters. There's more than blood that oozes (or explodes) out of these creatures; rather, we see guts and other bodily matter -- all in glorious HD. Kratos will, in the course of one short demo, impale a creature with its own horns, cut a gaping wound into someone's stomach, and rip a man's head off with his bare hands. And we're just scratching the surface.

God of War III out on PlayStation 3 in March 2010

Been waiting to tear some mythical creatures apart on your PS3? Of course you have. Unfortunately, you'll have to wait a bit longer -- and by "a bit" we mean "nine months." God of War III will descend upon bloodthirsty masses in March 2010, according to an announcement at the E3 keynote.

Hey, that's one big game that isn't getting smashed into the holiday season! Unless it gets delayed until holiday 2010. Let's not think about that.

Sony: Survey not a guarantee of Blu-ray release of PS2 God of War games

Based on the 220 comments which materialized on last week's post about a survey which hinted at the possibility of Blu-ray re-releases of the first two God of War games on the God of War III collector's edition, we're guessing there's a fair amount of interest in seeing a revival of these two classic god-murdering sims. However, Sony representatives recently made a statement that will likely send your hopes crashing to the ground faster than a brutally de-winged Icarus.

Speaking to Kotaku, SCEA representatives attempted to lower the expectations of their fanbase, stating, "It is simply a marketing survey. The goal of it is to do focus group testing." They added, "if that was the number one requested thing, that would be something they would need to see if that was most technically feasible," but explained that they've yet to see God of War II run off of a Blu-ray disc. We sure hope they figure it out -- we're already drowning in collectible keychains and statuettes over here.

Survey mentions God of War ports for GoWIII collector's edition

What would make you buy a God of War III Collector's Edition? That's what Sony wants to know, and they've sent out a survey to find out exactly that. Various Joystiq readers have received a questionnaire regarding potential bonuses included in the premium GoW pack:
  • Full game soundtrack
  • Comic book/graphic novel
  • Exclusive packaging
  • God of War and God of War II on Blu-ray disc
  • God of War and God of War II cinematic compilation
  • Art book
  • T-shirt
  • Collectible items
  • Access to exclusive downloadable content
  • Behind-the-scenes/"Making of" featurettes
  • Developer commentary
Of the options, the Blu-ray compilation of the first two GoW games has us most intrigued. It would be terrific to see all three GoW console games in one collection -- especially for those that don't have a backwards-compatible PS3. If Sony could do a Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection style HD upgrade, then this CE will be a no-brainer.

[Thanks to everyone that sent this in!]

God of War dev hopes Dante's Inferno offers worthy competition

God of War III Game Director Stig Asmussen welcomes the challenge from EA's Dante's Inferno. In fact, he hopes it's a threat to The Ghost of Sparta, telling CVG that he expects a "fantastic game that serves as good competition."

Asmussen explains that "some of the guys" who worked on God of War are now working on Inferno. Allow us to provide the tagline for any potential franchise crossover: Hell's full ... but it's about to get Spartan.

GDC09: Leaked God of War III gameplay footage

Chances are that this leaked video (via DarkZero) of God of War III, captured at GDC, won't be around for long, so if you fancy seeing Kratos riding a cyclops into battle against a swarm of skeletons -- again -- we'd suggest checking it out as soon as possible. Also, because it's God of War III footage. We've embedded it after the break.

There are no hands-on opportunities with the game at GDC this year, but we'd be surprised if Kratos doesn't put in a fairly large showing at E3. Until then, we'll have to settle for dodgy Youtube videos.

GDC09: God of War III footage conveys massive battles, dynamic camera

We've seen the expertly edited trailer, but today we got our first look at some raw gameplay from Sony's Titan-ic sequel, God of War III. Sony Santa Monica programmers JIm Tilander and Vassily Filippov ended their highly technical discussion of optimizing code for PS3's multiple cores, a.k.a. its SPUs, with a brief 20-second clip.

In it, Kratos squared off against dozens of enemies in a smaller area than was seen in the trailer. These guys, with their tall, blue coffin-shaped shields looked nothing like we've seen in the series to date. In order to dispatch them all, Kratos weakened a cyclops who'd arrived on the scene, triggering a familiar "kill" minigame. Here's where we got to see the creature-riding aspect of the game in an actual gameplay setting. Kratos pearched on the monster's neck while it struggled to throw him off, swinging wildly at anything and everything in its path.

And that was it. The level wasn't paticularly noteworthy, but the sheer amount of enemies on-screen was. The new camera system also came into play, starting off up close to the amazingly detailed Kratos and pulling back as more enemies flooded onscreen. The action itself was fast and smooth. Filippov noted that, when the scene complexity allows it, God of War III will run at 60 frames per second, but it's not locked there. More complex scenes will run slower, but never below 30FPS. So, when's E3 again? Right -- not soon enough.

Annotated God of War III trailer reveals new info

There were so many things going on in the last God of War III trailer that we're certain you might have missed some of the more subtle, yet crucial, details. Take, for example, the scar across Kratos' abdomen; did you notice that the first time around? Yeah, we didn't either, not until this annotated version of the trailer popped up and pointed things out.

Other annotated info includes notes on real-time weapon swapping, the 50-enemy on-screen capacity and Kratos' high polygon count. Also, the fact that this game-rendered trailer was significantly toned down for the ESRB is news to us; the final game is said to be even more violent. Check out the trailer after the break to see what else you might have missed.

God of War III concept art reveals Fire Titan

We're always appreciative when concept artists release their work for the world at large to see. Most remains unseen due to legal hurdles, or is later monetized in the form of art books. The above God of War III image, however, was found on concept artist Cecil Kim's website and reveals the "Fire Titan." which, according to the blurb, "battles against Zeus and his allies." MTV Multiplayer proposes that this may be one of God of War III's bosses but, if the trailer is anything to go by, this massive walking volcano is much more likely to be one of the game's levels.

If you're hungry for more God of War III concept art, be sure to make your way to concept artist Andy Park's website. He recently put up a load of artwork from the game, including enemy concepts and environment paintings that look to have heavily inspired the recent trailer.

Calendar clarification: God of War 3, MAG before March 2010

Had your hopes up that God of War III and Zipper Interactive's "massive action game," MAG, would be all up in your PS3 before January 1, Ought-10 rolled around? Better let them down ... gently. Following two disparate announcements -- one saying both games (among others) would hit within calendar 2009; the other citing fiscal 2009 -- Sony has confirmed to Joystiq that the release window is, in fact, the latter: before March 1, 2010.

Two other games listed in the original press release are pretty much locked for release within the year, though. Heavy Rain, Quantic Dreams' dreamy-looking adventure game, was confirmed for calendar '09 release last August. The Sucker Punch developed action-platformer, inFamous, is coming "this spring," according to a packaging insert going out with tomorrow's major release, Killzone 2.

Sony: God of War III, MAG coming within the year

A triumphant Sony press release which heralded next week's arrival of Killzone 2 and, effectively, the kick-off for its 2009 line-up, contained a tentative list of the games that will likely cause PS3 owners to foam at the mouth with anticipation over the coming months. The list contained two mammoths in particular -- according to Sony, both God of War III and Zipper Interactive's MAG: Massive Action Game will be among the "blockbuster exclusives" which will land on the console "throughout the year."

The imminent launch window for the two titles (which were mentioned alongside inFamous, Heavy Rain, MLB 09: The Show and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves) is just a bit surprising -- though we suppose Sony's selective wording ("throughout the year") could mean that the listed titles will be dropping by this time in 2010. Still, barring any delays, 2009's shaping up to be a heck of a year for the enthusiastic supporters of Sony's monolithic home console.

God of War III official site is now live

The God of War III official website is now up and running. While at first glance it looks like the site doesn't offer anything new, it does feature downloadable HD versions (720p, 1080p) of the trailer revealed just last week and the one from last year's E3. So much for waiting on the PSN to host it this Thursday [Update: Okay, so it's already out on the PSN]. Go grab it now and watch the carnage in glorious 1080p!

Also, may we remind you of our massive GoW III coverage blowout? That includes impressions on Kratos' last adventure and two brand-new interviews.

Joystiq interview: God of War 3's Ken Feldman, art director

Ken Feldman was one of the original three people who came up with the God of War concept and worked as a lead environment designer on the first game. David Jaffe and Tim Moss were the other members of that trinity. During the sequel's development, Feldman worked behind the scenes on future technology and is currently the art director of God of War III.

We chatted with Ken at the God of War III preview event in Los Angeles this week, where he detailed the overhauled game engine, Kratos' new PS2-busting polygon count, and inspiration for the God of War style.

Joystiq interview: God of War 3 director Stig Asmussen

After working on games like Dr. Muto and Gauntlet: Dark Legacy, Stig Asmussen worked as lead environmental artist on God of War before moving on to God of War II, where he was promoted to art director. He's now game director for God of War III, which means he's reached the pinnacle of Mount Olympus, so to speak. Despite shouldering an Altas-like workload, including organizing a team of more than 100 employees, Asmussen was in high spirits when we sat down with him this week at the God of War III preview event.

Continue on to learn more about PlayStation Home and DLC plans, the handling of motion controls, and how the team's bringing newcomers up to speed on the story -- plus many more previously unknown details!
