Electronic Arts told the <a href="http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/entertainmentnewsbuzz/2009/06/e3.html">LA Times</a> during an interview this week that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/godfather-2"><em>Godfather</em></a> franchise is done at the publisher. EA Games label president Frank Gibeau told the paper, "We're not going to do another one." He then noted that there was no <em>Godfather</em> game in the schedule going out three years.<br /><br />EA's PR followed up with the Times to say no decision had been made about the fate of the mafia franchise and that "Paramount is a great partner." The speculation is that EA is toning down its focus on licensed properties and working on making a stable of original franchises to exploit.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/05/ea-exec-states-there-wont-be-more-godfather-games/">EA exec states there won't be more Godfather games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 05 Jun 2009 23:15:00 EST. Although you're free to complain about these microtransaction shenanigans in the comments below, remember the best way to let EA know how you feel is by voting with your wallet. Our friends at <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/46949.html">GameTrailers.com</a> have a new trailer for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/godfather-2/">The Godfather II</a> that showcases an interesting feature coming to the EA franchise: Don Control. The multiplayer feature offers what looks to be an RTS-style control system where one person hosting an online match can place bets on the match (that will in turn carry over into the single-player campaign), issue commands to their human teammates (should they cooperate, that is) and follow individuals of their choosing from a third-person perspective. <br /><br />Rather than phoning in the <em>de rigeur</em> multiplayer, it seems as though EA has taken the extra time afforded them by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/03/ea-whacks-the-godfather-ii-release-plans-delays-game/">the game being pushed back</a> to beef up a very different experience than what the single-player campaign offers. To see exactly what we're talking about, hit the break to check out the trailer.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii-multiplayer-dons-control/">The Godfather II Multiplayer - Don's View</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii-multiplayer-dons-control/#1443163"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/10.15.118.37-image45-3202009-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii-multiplayer-dons-control/#1443162"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/10.15.118.37-image40-3202009-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii-multiplayer-dons-control/#1443161"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/zone01_high_h20_m1_x329_y38_z-185_000015-3202009-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii-multiplayer-dons-control/#1443160"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/zone01_high_h20_m1_x344_y38_z-182_000014-3202009-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii-multiplayer-dons-control/#1443159"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/zone01_high_h20_m1_x326_y38_z-168_000018-3202009-6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/21/don-control-in-godfather-ii-introduces-rts-style-gameplay-you/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>'Don control' in Godfather II introduces RTS-style gameplay you can't refuse</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/21/don-control-in-godfather-ii-introduces-rts-style-gameplay-you/">'Don control' in Godfather II introduces RTS-style gameplay you can't refuse</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 21 Mar 2009 20:30:00 EST. Though EA's pledge to focus on quality games and new IP may have resulted in critical approval and a more positive image among gamers, the company has still been forced to take serious <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/19/ea-details-restructuring-plan-laying-off-10-of-employees/">financial cost-cutting measures</a> in recent months. Thankfully, Glen Schofield, manager of EA's Redwood Shores studio, isn't about to let some unpleasant realities get in the way of staff morale and a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/dice-2009-riccitiello-addresses-recession-a-blessing-for-gam/">commitment to top-notch titles</a>.<br /><br />"I said, look, I can't tell you if this is the end or not, but we're making some great games here," Schofield relayed to <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/ea-exec-tells-worried-staff-were-going-to-survive-this">GI.biz</a>. "If we continue to make great games, if we continue to push this, we're not going to lose our jobs. Because we're making great stuff." The studio hopes to follow up the positively received but <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/16/maddening-npd-data-shows-weak-dead-space-mirrors-edge-sales/">commercially disappointing</a> survival-horror, <em>Dead Space</em>, with potentially great stuff like <em>The Godfather II</em> and hellish actioner <em>Dante's Inferno</em>.<br /><br />Schofield reportedly told his staff, "People who aren't making great games are going to lose their jobs. But if you're making quality and we continue to push on that, and you're a quality person then you're going to keep your job." That almost sounds like a threat, doesn't it? Talk about the man(tra) sticking it to <em>you</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/26/eas-schofield-sticks-to-quality-games-mantra/">EA's Schofield sticks to 'quality games' mantra</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Feb 2009 17:29:00 EST. The Godfather's crew. You know, folks like The Safecracker, The Medic, The Engineer, The Bruiser, The Demolitionist and The Arsonist. <div align="left">EA, going against the game releasing grain, will not be delaying <a href="http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/942/942828p1.html"><em>Godfather II</em>'s release date</a> as is usually the norm when publishers shift around their release schedules. Instead, they'll be bumping <em>Godfather II</em>'s release date ahead (an expedite?) to late February. The 24th in North America and the 27th in Europe, to be exact. That means that a game that we really <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-godfather-2">haven't seen</a> or heard much of will be releasing in a little over a month's time. Interesting decision EA, now how about spending that marketing budget?</div>

EA's <em>The Godfather II</em> will be hitting PS3, Xbox 360 and PC on February 24th in North America, and February 27th in Europe. The open-world game promises to be a more strategic affair than before with the new "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/07/godfather-2-detailed-less-gta-more-rpg-rts-board-game/">Don's View</a>" feature, allowing you to see a 3D representation of your criminal activity across all three of the game's cities.<br /><br />Those who pre-order the game will have a distinct advantage. The pre-order bonus is an exclusive in-game character, Tommy Cipolla. Other characters in the game start off with just one skill and a level-one weapon, while Tommy is truly a talented guy. He has <em>two</em> skills (arsonist and medic) and can carry a level-<em>two </em>shotgun. How <em>badass</em>. Surely, this is an offer you can't refuse.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii/">The Godfather II</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii/#1443163"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/10.15.118.37-image45-3202009-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii/#1443162"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/10.15.118.37-image40-3202009-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii/#1443161"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/zone01_high_h20_m1_x329_y38_z-185_000015-3202009-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii/#1443160"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/zone01_high_h20_m1_x344_y38_z-182_000014-3202009-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii/#1443159"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/zone01_high_h20_m1_x326_y38_z-168_000018-3202009-6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/08/godfather-ii-release-date-set-pre-order-bonus-revealed/">Godfather II release date set, pre-order bonus revealed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 10:11:00 EST. Surprise!<br /><br />More interesting is what Riccitiello then went on to say about <em>Godfather II</em>'s interesting gameplay twist, telling investors that "you can play this game both at the street level, much like a <em>GTA</em>-style game, but you can also play it top-down, almost like you're in an RTS, controlling the strategy of the boroughs so you can see what's going on..." He also mentioned that it's a game they'll be "talking a lot about this fall", pretty much slating it for a 2009 release.<br /><br /><em>GTA</em>-style <em>Godfather </em>with a hint of RTS? Color us confused yet intrigued.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/18/ea-talks-godfather-iis-gta-and-rts-gameplay/">EA talks Godfather II's GTA and RTS gameplay</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 Jun 2008 15:00:00 EST.
