Amazon is continuing their apparent campaign to get rid of overstocked Nyko Frontman guitars with a new sale in their "Countdown to Black Friday." The savings are ridiculous. If you don't have a Wii Guitar Hero game and don't mind forgoing the World Tour full band experience (or putting it off while building up a collection of guitars), you could do a lot worse.

If you purchase a copy of Guitar Hero III or Guitar Hero: Aerosmith ($35 each) and add two Frontman guitars ($20 each) to your cart, $20 will be knocked off your order. So you end up with a game and two guitars for just a little more than the normal cost of a retail game.

Looking for more songs to complement that Guitar Hero: World Tour purchase you just made? Probably not for several months, but maybe you can do some shopping in anticipation of that -- especially (only) if you really like Aerosmith. Amazon's Deal of the Day knocks half the price off of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, to a perfectly reasonable twenty bucks. The Xbox 360 version is also on sale, if you would prefer (though obviously we can't endorse such a decision!)

This is the game only, and doesn't come with any guitars or anything, but provided the song list meets with your approval, 41 new Guitar Hero tracks for $20 isn't bad at all.

If you thought that 2008's triple-billing of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, Guitar Hero: On Tour and the upcoming Guitar Hero World Tour was, well, a lot of Guitar Hero ... you ain't seen nuthin' yet. Activision-Blizzard revealed at an event for industry analysts that it intends to double the number of Guitar Hero SKUs (not necessarily unique games, just console-specific variations of "core" titles) in 2009. The goal is to triple them in 2010. Whammy bar!

Considering that we had two console Guitar Hero titles this year, that would potentially mean four in 2009 (one being Guitar Hero: Metallica) and six in 2010. That's not even counting handhelds. So ... are you ready to rock, a lot? Or is this all just way too much noise? Let us know in comments.

Considering it came out in June, it's a little curious that Activision is only now releasing a demo of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith to Xbox Live Marketplace. Somehow, we get the feeling that pretty much anyone interested in Guitar Hero: Aerosmith already has it. If, somehow, you're interested in this game and have yet to try it out, go give it try. Oh, one last thing, the dashboard details are priceless: "Get a taste of Guitar Hero(R): Aerosmith - There's never been a band like them; there has never been a game like this." Really? Never?

The whole point of Guitar Hero Aerosmith is to give you a taste of what it would be like to be part of the seminal classic rock band. So, what would a taste of a taste of Aerosmith be (besides bitter with a hint of copper)? That's right: A demo for the game, now available on Xbox Live, including "Sweet Emotion," "Dream On," "Walk this Way" and others.

Also on XBL is the demo for NBA Live 09, the taste of which we can't even begin to contemplate.

Well, this should make the patented Joystiq Instrument Compatibility Matrix a bit easier to memorize. Straight from our special Leipzig correspondent Jem Alexander, Activision says that If you play Guitar Hero World Tour on PS2, PS3 or 360, your instrument is going to work. Whether it be from Rock Band, Rock Band 2 or whatever, it works with Guitar Hero World Tour.

Now, what does this mean for the Wii version of the game? We have absolutely no idea. But hey, what are you complaining about: It's got Miis in it! Isn't that enough?

Rhythm games have certainly been keeping the tempo up for financial growth in the industry. GameDaily notes UBS analyst Ben Schachter's report, showing "music-themed games" have made up 15% of software sales year-to-date and 32% year-over-year growth so far.

The Guitar Hero franchise is already up 82% this year, with Guitar Hero: On Tour taking in $15 million in July alone. Meanwhile, Rock Band, across all platforms, took in $47 million in July ... and that doesn't even count any DLC sales. Unless the rhythm game bubble bursts in the next few months, GH: World Tour and Rock Band 2 sales -- along with their respective DLC sales -- could make up a significant portion of another record-breaking year for the industry.

Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick finds comments made by Warner Music -- saying it should be paid more for the use of its music in games like Guitar Hero -- a little "one-sided." The Financial Times reports that the Blizzavision chief thinks comments made by Warner Music's Edgar Bronfman don't take into account the "capital and resources" required to turn the song into something "fun to play."

With the music industry taking a backseat to the games industry, it's not surprising to find record execs trying to figure out a way to squeeze more money out of a billion-dollar franchise. The thing is, though, that Activision's merger with Vivendi Games, connects it to Vivendi Universal, which owns Universal Music, the "world's largest music publisher." At the end of the day, Kotick can snap his fingers and never talk to Warner Music again, all the while squeezing every last dollar out of the Guitar Hero franchise until it stops being the soup du jour.

Sure, we've been trying to get to the bottom of the inconsistent incompatibility between Guitar Hero: Aerosmith and non-Guitar Hero guitars for weeks. Some players who try to use, let's say, the Rock Band Stratocaster would be greeted by the above screen while other encountered no problems at all.

Well, at least we're not going crazy: Activision told MTV News that "a recent auto-downloaded title update" to the Xbox 360 version of GH: Aerosmith "should" make that game compatible with other guitars, like the Rock Band Strats. Now, that wasn't so hard, was it Activision? (Also, you couldn't have just told us when we asked you fifty times earlier this month. We're feeling like Rodney Dangerfield over here).

Well, now what? After finding plenty of conflicting information as to whether or not the Rock Band Stratocaster works on the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith (including a direct capture of it not working) we decided to ask you directly in the hopes we could arrive at some sort of answer. Instead, we've got this: 4.7% say it works while 5.6% say it doesn't (89.7% just wanted to play along at home).

Now, considering how unscientific this methodology is, we're pretty sure our margin of error is in excess of 5%. Even if we were to consider the information accurate, we're still at a deadlock. Activision isn't talking (really, we've asked for a comment several times), so we're going to go with this: there are multiple versions of the Rock Band Stratocaster and some will work with Guitar Hero: Aerosmith and some won't. Really, that's the best we can come up with. Of course, this would be a whole lot easier if Activision would just agree to play nicely.

Alright, this is getting ridiculous. Activision has yet to respond to our requests for clarification, and anecdotal reports continue to contradict our finding that the Rock Band Stratocaster does not work with Guitar Hero: Aerosmith on the Xbox 360. If you'll consult our guitar compatibility matrix, you'll find that incompatibility is par for the course, so we left it at that. But conflicting reports keep coming in.

Our original tipster, who works for a rather large gaming magazine, tested all manner of guitars with Guitar Hero: Aerosmith but, alas, he was on an XDK - the Xbox 360 debug kit (and no, the above is not Photoshopped, it's a direct screen grab). Perhaps something, however unlikely, has changed from the reviewable code to the final retail code? Even then, we've gotten tips as recently as this morning claiming the Rock Band guitar does not work with the retail release of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. Frankly, we can't keep track anymore so we'll do the next best thing: power of the masses.

Think of it this way: Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is like Neversoft's version of former Guitar Hero-dev Harmonix's Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s. Old man Activision wants Guitar Hero twice a year, but there's only so much one dev team can do when they're hard at work on their own follow-up featuring a full band lineup.

So, the same ... just remove the whole part about the dev team getting bought and releasing that follow-up through Activision's biggest competitor - oh, and the whole part about it being 2007 - and you've got an idea of where critics are putting GH:A on the fake-instrument rhythm game pantheon. Like Aerosmith? You probably already bought it. Don't like Aerosmith? Move along.
  • IGN (76/100): "Even if the formula is a bit stale by now, that doesn't make Guitar Hero: Aerosmith a bad game. In fact, if you're a huge fan of the band, of the Guitar Hero franchise, or haven't yet seen what all of the fuss is over the music rhythm phenomenon, this release will please and then some. However, if you've been following the franchise since the beginning, you'll probably wonder if this game is really necessary."
  • GameDaily (70/100): "Aerosmith junkies will love Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, thanks to its impressive song list and extra content. Everyone else, however, should rent it. It's a pleasant diversion, providing single-player and multiplayer enjoyment for would-be strummers, but with missing songs and the same old gameplay, it doesn't have enough sweet emotion to justify its $59.99 price."
  • GameSpot (70/100): "If you like Aerosmith, you'll like this game. If you don't like Aerosmith, you will not like this game. Even dedicated fans of the group may have trouble rationalizing paying full price for just 41 songs, but while GH: Aerosmith is a little short on content, it's plenty of fun."

A few weeks back, we mentioned that a Guitar Hero: Aerosmith (and Target) sponsored racecar would be tearing up the NASCAR track. Well, that race went down this past weekend where the GH:Aerosmith car finished in a very sad 38th place. Bummer. But thanks to loyal fanboy SToNeP2277 who attended the racing festivities, we received a few pictures of not only the racecar prior to its losing finish, but also the promotional trailer and RV they had setup on the race grounds. Check out all the NASCAR pictures below and be sure to note the very glam red rope they had setup.

While the above image comes from the Xbox 360 port of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, we're fairly certain the same can be said of the Wii version of the game. In all likelihood, it doesn't play nice with your Rock Band guitar. But, considering how gimped Rock Band is for the Wii (let's hope that Rock Band 2 is a more full-fledged port, like Guitar Hero: World Tour), we're sure most of you are enjoying the game with your wireless Les Paul from Guitar Hero III.

A new video of "Get Wii Fit with Alyson" was added to the Nintendo Channel, this time featuring the dancer and friends trying out the yoga exercises. If you think watching someone else do yoga might be exciting, you'd be wrong. The most entertaining part is when Alyson says about the virtual male trainer, "I think I'll call it Brad. You're rad, Brad." Ironically, that's also that part that made us start sobbing, wondering when it would end.

You can also watch "info" videos that promote Alone in the Dark, Order Up!, Magnetica Twist, and a number of other games. The highlight for us was watching Wall-E being adorable in the Wall-E TV Spot, but that's not to say it made us want to buy the Wii title. It did make us want to go and see Wall-E, though.

The Activision peripheral tantrum continues, with the mega-publisher still refusing to allow Rock Band guitar peripherals to operate on its Guitar Hero games, including this week's Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. Despite reports to the contrary on a couple forums, when our friendly tipster attempted to use a Rock Band guitar on the Xbox 360 version of GH: Aerosmith he was greeted with the following error: "An unsupported guitar peripheral has been detected. Connect either a Guitar Hero guitar or Xbox 360 controller and press START to continue."

Considering the Rock Band guitar never worked on any of the three new-gen consoles' releases of Guitar Hero 3 (check our guitar compatibility matrix), we're going to assume the same lack of functionality is present in not only the Xbox 360 release, but the PlayStation 3 and Wii releases of GH: Aerosmith as well. Let us know if you've tried it on either of those consoles.

While there are technically two games coming out this week, there's really only one. You see, one of them is the Gears of War re-release (which we thought came out last week). That's all well and good for the folks who have yet to pick up Epic's super gory and very playable shooter. Just remember to watch out for that host shotty. Strangely enough, the new game releasing this week isn't all that new either. It's Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, which is, you guessed it, Guitar Hero with a lot of Aerosmith tracks. Whether or not you regard that as a good thing is entirely up to you. One point in defense of Aerosmith: they did give us Alicia Silverstone.

Well, it's the end of an era. We've had a lot of fun over the last few months making fun of Aerosmith, both for their membership among the ranks of the walking undead and for passing mediocre music on an unsuspecting public for decades. But today we must report that, despite our most acerbic cursing into the blogging darkness, Guitar Hero Aerosmith is, in fact, being released. You win this round, Tyler.

So why are we featuring it? Well, you ever see that scene in Hook where Peter gives Hook the dignity of having his hair back, even though they're mortal enemies? It's sort of like that. ... And yes, the closest contender is Purr Pals on Wii. Little bit of column A, little bit of column B.

Earlier this month, Guitar Hero and Aerosmith fans alike anxiously perused the partial track list for Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, hoping to find some tunes worth faux-jamming too. Now there won't be any more speculating on what will and what won't be in the game, as the full forty-one song list was just revealed. Incidentally, our favorite tunes on it happen to be from bands that aren't Aerosmith.

You probably know how we feel about the direction that the Guitar Hero franchise is headed in -- and some of you may even agree. With its release date quickly approaching, we've been in the dark regarding Guitar Hero: Aerosmith's complete track list. That is until this morning when we were graced with the complete track listing thanks to Eurogamer and my oh my is there a lot of Aerosmith. Though, that was expected. You can browse all the musical goodness after the break where we've listed all the songs in their appropriate tiers including the bonus tracks.

We have one giant complaint though, what happened to Deep Purple and The White Stripes? They were both previously confirmed way back when for inclusion in GH:Aerosmith. And, darnit, we want our promised The White Stripes! We're willing to trade in one of the 872 Aerosmith songs for our Stripes, get rid of "Nobody's Fault" or "Draw the Line", we don't care. Anything to get a track from The White Stripes ... humph!

Despite most of us having a true distaste for zombie rockers Aerosmith, we've had a long-standing fear that we'd be tricked into buying Guitar Hero Aerosmith by a few non-Aerosmith tracks that we wouldn't be able to live without. Now, after we've seen the full track listing for the game, we're ashamed to admit that we're still on the fence.

We'll admit, the presence of Mott the Hoople and The Clash do make it significantly more tempting, as does the complete absence of "Don't Want to Miss a Thing," but we think about all that Aerosmith and we're right back at square one. Finally, America's love for Steven Tyler's seething, Ben-Gay-slathered pseudo-sexuality can be melded with its love of value and flown on one giant fossil fuel-burning flag. In an effort to appeal to the manly sports-minded crowd, Activision and Target have teamed up to sponsor Dario Franchitti's NASCAR Dodge and plaster it with Guitar Hero: Aerosmith prettiness. Just look at it above, isn't she pretty? Dario will drive the Guitar Hero themed racecar during the NASCAR Sprint Cup's New Hampshire Motor Speedway race on Sunday, June 29th. Hopefully Franchitti doesn't wreck his prettified car on Sunday, because we know Steven Tyler would NOT approve of damage done to anything sporting the Aerosmith name.

The Nintendo Channel has received its weekly infusion of new videos. Sure, the weekly updates usually feature more videos than this, and the Samba de Amigo trailer is actually one we've already seen, but there's interesting new stuff contained within. Especially if you want to see what Block Breaker Deluxe looks like without having to buy the thing.

Aside from the WiiWare videos, this week's update is entirely musical. The aforementioned Samba de Amigo trailer is still enjoyable, and two other trailers focus on upcoming Guitar Hero games: the new DS iteration and the Aerosmith version.

We're interested in the above video of Guitar Hero Aerosmith because it shows what the game will be like when playing with other listed musicians. Unfortunately, it looks like you still have to look at Steven Tyler's scary avatar during songs featuring Aerosmith, like Run D.M.C.'s version of "Walk This Way."

Guitar Hero IV is on its way, and with it are coming individual games themed around Metallica, Aerosmith, and others. This follows the strategy highlighted by Activision CEO Robert Kotick last year, in which the executive promised shareholders to fully "exploit" the company's franchises on an annual basis. The immediate response of gamers was almost exclusively negative, not least because the prospect has connotations of poor quality and high pricing. Although Activision may be the only company to announce its strategy so publicly, it's hardly the only adopting these kinds of tactics. If it irritates gamers so much, why do companies in the industry do this? And is it as bad as it seems?

Here's some news that's sure to strike a sour chord with the legions of Guitar Hero III owners worldwide. We've confirmed with Activision that Guitar Hero: Aerosmith will not allow users to access content for GH3.

It will also be impossible for those who've purchased only Guitar Hero: Aerosmith to access and download tracks currently available for GH3. For those with both games: prepare for disc-swapping. The carry-over of DLC into Guitar Hero: Aerosmith seemed like a real no-brainer; hopefully Neversoft will take Guitar Hero fans' previous purchases into account while nailing down Guitar Hero World Tour and Guitar Hero: Metallica's feature sets.

Want to know what songs to expect in Guitar Hero: Aerosmith? Thanks to our useless hard-working friends at Joystiq, we can give you an idea of what to expect -- at least partially. Our favorite all-encompassing video game blog also got its hands on the upcoming game, essentially describing it as Guitar Hero III, only with more Aerosmith. So, if you liked the third game or just enjoy songs like "Sweet Emotion," there's a good chance that you'll be swayed to pick this one up.

As promised, there are also some non-Aerosmith songs to look forward to, although Steven Tyler and company dominate the playlist. To give you an idea of what to expect, fourteen of the twenty-five revealed tracks are Aerosmith songs.

Joystiq have posted their hands-on impressions with the latest in the Guitar Zero franchise. From what they're saying, it seems peoples expectations might've been right on the money. Guitar Hero Aerosmith is Guitar Hero III, but with more Aerosmith. A lot more. Fourteen of the twenty-five tracks are by the eponymous band, with groups such as Joan Jett, Run DMC and The Clash making up the rest.

The overarching question, when it comes to GH: A, is "why isn't this a DLC pack?" There's no real reason, other than Activision trying to stick their fingers where they're not wanted. Namely, inside your wallet. With standalone copies retailing between $50 and $60, not to mention the $99 peripheral bundle (same guitar as GHIII, with an Aerosmith faceplate) Activision will be raking in a lot more than they would from a DLC pack. Even with their famously high DLC prices.

Joystiq managed to wrap their hands around a guitar and try out Guitar Hero: Aerosmith before its official release next month. The verdict: it's a lot like Guitar Hero III with a helluva lot more Aerosmith. There are new venues, some new characters, and other minor changes, but overall it's the same game (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). It's Guitar Hero III ... now with lots more Aerosmith! Seriously though, at Activision's hands-on debut event for the stepping stone to Guitar Hero World Tour, we couldn't help but feel a strong overwhelming sense of déjà vu.

That's probably because, for all intents and purposes, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is GH3 with polygonal likenesses of the legendary rockers, a story mode that follows their rise to fame, lots of their songs, and a few tracks from other bands to sweeten the deal.
