Its haunting vocals, 1800s gospel-esque melody lines and character-relevant lyrics are an exceptional work on their own, as you can clearly tell from the video above featuring Bastion composer Darren Korb and vocalist Ashley Barrett.

Now you too can play the part of a critically acclaimed singer/songwriter, assuming you have the ability to command a guitar and/or piano in coordination with sheet music and/or tabulature. Charts for all four songs of the Bastion soundtrack are now available for free from Supergiant's store, which we're certain will vastly improve the accuracy of YouTube cover videos the world over. Now if you'll excuse us, we're off to remind ourselves why we dropped out of music school.
Bastion sheet music now available for $0.00 through Supergiant originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 17 Mar 2012 03:00:00 EST. If I had Rocksmith when I was a kid, I would be a lot better off now.

In 1995, I begged my parents to buy me a guitar. As you can imagine, I was swept up in the grunge fever that permeated a lot of the '90s. My idol, Kurt Cobain, died a year before and being the 12-year-old I was, I had it all figured out: I was going to be a rock star.

My parents bought me a used Ibanez acoustic, with the promise of an electric guitar if I stayed at it. I did and, 16 years later, at an event for Ubisoft's Rocksmith, I discovered that my parents and I had wasted money on guitar instruction over the years.
Much like the classical pianist who has thoroughly mastered his craft and finds the act of reading sheet music to be perfectly droll, the multicolored gem charts of Guitar Heros and Rock Bands have become easy pleasy lemon squeezy. If you've been playing those games since the genre's inception, you can probably tap and strum through most songs on the hardest difficulty settings. It is unlikely, however, that you could do so backwards while dodging increasingly violent salvos of enemy lasers.

24 Caret Games' PSN-exclusive indie shoot-em-up Retro/Grade asks you to do just that, forcing you to use your brain (and your digits) in a manner which you're almost certainly unaccustomed to. In case you haven't been following it (you terrible dummy), here's the pitch: You're a pilot who's flying his spacecraft through a reversed flow of time, dodging enemy fire as it's sucked back into their ships, while re-collecting your own fired bursts by navigating to the appropriate track and strumming, in time, on a guitar peripheral. (Or a controller, if you're so inclined.)
Continue reading Retro/Grade preview: A step forward, backward

Retro/Grade preview: A step forward, backward originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 28 Aug 2011 14:30:00 EST. Sonic the Hedgehog is more than just a blue creature who runs quickly. He's a mascot, a hero, an inspiration to many ... and now, in honor of the 20th anniversary of his first game, he's a guitar. The Japanese branch of guitar company ESP has partnered with Sega to make a limited edition Sonic electric guitar designed to look like Sega musician Jun Senoue's. It features the hedgehog's smirking face on the body, and his shoe on the headstock.

It'll be available through the end of the year for ¥136,500 ($1782). After the break, Senoue demonstrates with a little Sonic music. You can find more of his playing at the ESP site.

If you're looking for a much, much cheaper collectible, the Belgian Post is launching a series of Sonic stamps on August 29.

We typically wouldn't characterize most video game theme song covers that get sent our way as "soulful" or "profound," but then again, most covers that get sent our way aren't as incredible as Dario Montanino's electric take on Mega Man 3's Proto Man theme. Check it out in the video below.
Continue reading Mega Man 3's Proto Man theme gets shredded, moves us

Mega Man 3's Proto Man theme gets shredded, moves us originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 26 Mar 2011 20:00:00 EST.

In one of the timeliest strategic moves in the video game industry's recorded history, Ubisoft has announced an upcoming rhythm title from a totally new IP, called Rocksmith. The game lets players strum through tunes by artists such as, David Bowie, Interpol, and The Rolling Stones using any real electric guitar they may have sitting around the house with a quarter-inch input jack.

As pointed out by internet sleuth supererogatory, the portfolio of illustrator Greg Korn reveals that the title is actually Guitar Rising, a piece of vaporware long in development at GameTank. Korn explains the project was "purchased by Ubisoft and currently in development for consoles." This certainly sounds like the very same thing.

The remaining mystery is how the guitar will track the notes plucked or strummed by players -- the Squier Stratocaster for Rock Band 3 can only do so using built-in semiconducters on each fret and a MIDI adapter. Is the game going to pick up on the actual note produced by the guitar? At the very latest, we'll find out when Rocksmith drops during the second half of 2011. Programmer/artist Chris O'Shea has tapped even more of the Kinect's potential as a nerd fantasy-fulfillment device -- using its hand-tracking abilities, he's turned the gadget into an air guitar simulator. Check out the video after the jump to watch his wild gesticulations turn into sweet riffs.
Continue reading Kinect Hacks: True shredding potential unlocked with Kinect air guitar

Kinect Hacks: True shredding potential unlocked with Kinect air guitar originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 10 Dec 2010 11:00:00 EST. What to get for the Nintendo fan in your life who already has everything? How about this guitar made out of a Nintendo Entertainment System? GetLoFi.com hacked a working electric guitar together from the body of an NES, and as you can tell from the YouTube video after the break, it sounds ... ok?

So it's not great, but then again it's basically a box made out of plastic. The guitar is being sold for $150 on GetLoFi's web shop, and because it's custom made (the neck is a reused oak guitar neck), they've only got one for sale, but they seem game to make more if the demand is there. The NES itself has been hollowed out for all the other electronics, so if you want to play your favorite NES games while strumming their tunes, you'll need your own console for that.
Continue reading Guitar made out of an NES sounds like it's made out of an NES

Guitar made out of an NES sounds like it's made out of an NES originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 09 Dec 2010 22:30:00 EST. We've previewed Rock Band 3's general new features, the Pro mode and the keyboard trainer, but where the rubber meets the road is the guitar trainer. This is where Harmonix can expand the scope of instrument-based rhythm games: If you can connect a real guitar to your console and actually play a game to learn how to play guitar, then learning to jam isn't just trivial, it's fun.

Though I only got to play along with the pro guitar trainer for a short time, every indication is that Harmonix has done exactly that. The guitar trainer is astounding -- paired up with the real guitar controller from Fender or the 102-button controller, Harmonix applies its steady knowledge of gaming reward and replay not just to earning career mode money or having fun with your friends, but to actually learning and applying a knowledge of chords and guitar notes.

The novelty of the guitar controller -- which has, like, real strings and everything -- is definitely one advantage Power Gig has over its peers. Seven45 revealed another today: agreements with Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews Band, and ... Kid Rock to provide songs for the game.

"We think Power Gig is a much needed and much welcomed game because, unlike any others before it, it puts a real guitar into the hands of aspiring musicians, and we hope it inspires our fans and others to start playing even when they're not playing the game," the Dave Matthews Band is quoted as saying. The whole band? In unison?
Can the music genre be revitalized? Can gaming newcomer Seven45 Studios -- a combined publisher, developer and hardware manufacturer -- sway current fans of Guitar Hero and Rock Band to try yet another music game, and one that focuses only on guitar? The odds are undoubtedly against them.

At the very least, Seven45's Power Gig: Rise of the Sixstring isn't destined to become another Rock Revolution. It's true that Power Gig isn't fundamentally different from the other band games out there, offering four-player support with guitars, drum and vocals; however, Seven45's twist is the guitar: a fully-functioning electric guitar with real strings and the ability to create real music.

At first glance, Seven45's peripheral won't look very different from a standard guitar. In fact, were it not for the colored labels that run along the side of the instrument, and the Xbox jewel embedded on the face of the guitar, it'd be hard to tell it apart from a proper instrument. When not connected to a game console, it can be strummed with a standard pick (or your hand), and it will even connect to standard guitar amps.
It's a well-known fact that anything signed by a founding member of The Who is immediately imbued with supernatural properties. Imagine, if you will, the raw, unbridled power a Rock Band guitar would gain if tenderly handled and Hancocked by frontman Roger Daltrey. We're pretty sure it would be incapable of missing notes at that point.

Such an artifact is now attainable, if you're willing to dish out enough cash to claim it. Daltrey and peripheral manufacturer Mad Catz have teamed up to auction off a pair of classy Wooden Fender Stratocaster guitar controllers for Xbox 360. The proceeds from the auctions will support the Teenage Cancer Trust, a U.K. charity which funds special oncology units in hospitals which "enable young people to be treated together, by an expert team, in the best possible environment for their age group." These auctions are a great cause -- with some extremely rocking benefits.

The auctions are up right now, and will run until next Thursday. Also, we can't think of an appropriate pun to end this post, but if we write about Roger Daltrey and don't link to the "YEEEEEEAAAHHH" button, we're contractually obligated to resign.
In its own tweet, developer Pieces Interactive said that a European release date would be "coming soon."

Now PS3 owners will be able to use those guitar controllers of theirs to do something other than play along to "Uncontrollable Urge" over and over again (what, you mean you don't do that?) Specifically, in Fret Nice, players take control of the Vibrant Chordblasters as they travel through the world defeating Hair Bängers with their riffs.

Oddly missing from both of these announcements is any mention of the Xbox 360 version. We're checking with Tecmo about that.

[Update: Tecmo has no date for the XBLA version yet, and could offer no reason for the wait.]
We were just about to label 2009 the "Worst Year Ever in the History of Time," but ... but then this happened. From the depths of Reddit come a quintet of images of an unnamed musical engineer's latest project: An electric guitar shaped like a Koopa Troopa. We're so glad these pictures exist, because we're not sure our mind's eye could imagine something as fantastical as "an electric guitar shaped like a Koopa Troopa" without some sort of visual aid.

Check out the Reddit entry to see the fruits of this unnamed magician's labor. Whoever you are, if you're reading this, please send a video of you playing this thing. It's a scientific fact that 95 percent of American households are silently being overthrown by plastic musical instruments -- we'd wager your homestead is among those afflicted. Fortunately, a small video game accessories company, known as NEXiLUX, has come up with a clever solution for your guitar-storing needs: Collapsible guitar controllers, which are demoed in a video after the jump.

Here's the bad news -- these guitars are only compatible with the Wii versions of Guitar Hero titles or Wii/PS3/PS2 versions of Rock Band games. Also, when snapped together, they form what one could only charitably call a "guitar" -- it would probably be more accurately described as a "skinny keytar." The good news? It makes your acts of post-rocking instrument destruction much less permanent.
Continue reading NEXiLUX offers plastic instrument storage solution with collapsible guitars

NEXiLUX offers plastic instrument storage solution with collapsible guitars originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 01 Sep 2009 14:30:00 EST. It seems that those who've chained themselves to their couches in anticipation of the September-bound demo for Double Fine's upcoming rock god sim, Brütal Legend, won't be the first ones to get their hands on the game. Rather, unrestrained persons who manage to pre-order the game at their nearest GameStop will be granted early access to the demo on September 17. The pre-order deal mentions this early access beats the demo's normal release by a week -- meaning non-reservers will likely get the trial on Wednesday, September 23.

Also bundled with the pre-order offer is a GameStop-exclusive in-game guitar, which possesses a "unique, sexy body inspired by the members of Tenacious D." We hope this means Jack and Kyle gave their input on what the guitar should look like, and not that the guitar actually looks like their bodies. We're doing just fine without that mental image, thanks.

Update: While the demo access is new information, we actually knew about the gee-tar in May. We've even got a picture of it -- and we're happy to report it doesn't feature nude versions of K.G. and Jack. In other words, it's like a real Fender guitar, except without strings. What a lonely middle ground the Mad Catz Wireless Wooden Stratocaster Replica for Rock Band occupies (along with the other wooden instrument controllers).

The video showing off the guitar (after the break) mentions that these controllers are made in the Fender factory, and they certainly look a lot like real Strats. Also very much like a real guitar's: the $300 price tag. The company also shot a video for the more sensible (plastic) Telecaster Player's Edition guitar for 360 and the pan-platform Overdrive Pedal peripheral, which can also be seen after the break.
Continue reading Mad Catz shows off realistic Fender Strat guitar controller

Mad Catz shows off realistic Fender Strat guitar controller originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 28 Aug 2009 15:30:00 EST. The Japanese PlayStation Store recently received a massive booster shot from Sony and a number of third-party developers who've made a few of their PSP titles downloadable. Coded Arms, Dynasty Warriors and Valhalla Knights are among the notable downloadable games -- but the inclusion of Koei's cult classic rhythm title, Gitaroo Man Lives, is what really sets our hearts a-flutter. Available for just ¥1,200 (about $14), we'd be hard pressed to not buy this hard-to-find gem five or six times should it come stateside.

Speaking of which, we've contacted Koei to see if they plan on bringing U-1's epic journey to the North American PlayStation Store. We'll let you know whether or not the developer plans on breaking our hearts.
Gitaroo Man Lives, other titles added to Japanese PlayStation Store originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Aug 2009 11:30:00 EST. We first noticed a listing for Jam Sessions 2 at GameStop, then found it at Ubisoft.com.

The Ubisoft product page has a fairly detailed list of features for the game. Players can now record their "freestyle" creations and make them into playable levels for other players. A multi-track song editor is now included. In addition, there are now multiple selectable guitars, including Fender and Gibson models, and both acoustic and electric guitars. Jam Sessions 2 features songs from artists including REM, Heart, The Ramones, The Clash, Doobie Brothers, Plain White-T's, The Black Crowes, and The Pixies. Some kind of DSi-based "features to enhance sound effects while playing" are also included.

Ubisoft lists a September 29 release date for Jam Sessions 2. There's a new, slightly different guitar controller bundled with Guitar Hero 5. The sparkly red controller includes a redesigned touchpad, which now uses digital input instead of analog. The touchpad area also has small dots to indicate the fret color, and "slight reliefs" on the neck. Neversoft's Brian Bright told IGN that "all of these changes to the slider allow you to hit the tapping sections with better precision - we also removed the purple rope in the tapping/slide sections of game play by the way :)."

Activision has yet to determine whether this guitar will be available by itself or if it will be restricted to GH5 bundles. What is much more certain is that there will be a new Guitar Hero controller every single year, just in case Activision can convince some current guitar owners to upgrade.
Activision would love to sell you a new guitar with Guitar Hero 5 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Jul 2009 09:45:00 EST. YouTube user adderd019 swapped out all that tiresome plastic in his Rock Band guitar for a beam of infrared light, turning it into an optical theremin of sorts.

The way he explains it, it sounds simple -- merely add an LED emitter and a receiver to the space where the strum bar usually goes, and then wire the controller up so that it registers a strum whenever the light beam is broken. Anyone can do that, right? The result is a guitar that strums when you wave your hand through the strum bar area. See the video after the break and marvel at the less-clicky, vaguely magical guitar!

[Thanks, Comet!]
Continue reading Rock Band guitar mod turns on the magic of invisible light

Rock Band guitar mod turns on the magic of invisible light originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 15 May 2009 03:00:00 EST. Regardless of your feelings towards the mop-topped British rock sensation upon which the next Rock Band game is based, you have to admit -- The Beatles had them some lovely instruments. Two of these six-strings, Lennon and Harrison's Rickenbacker 325 and Gretsch Duo Jet, will be coming as $99 add-ons to The Beatles: Rock Band -- however, a third replica guitar will be coming in the game's Limited Edition Premium Bundle: Paul McCartney's Höfner bass guitar, pictured above.

According to a recent Harmonix press release, this wireless periph will work with all versions of Rock Band. It certainly looks gorgeous, but as our well-read colleagues at Engadget point out, this Höfner controller was designed for a right-handed player. McCartney, of course, was a Southpaw. Man, the game isn't even out yet, and already Harmonix is taking outrageous liberties with history. Unbelievable.

[Thanks, MarkHawk!]
McCartney's replica Rock Band bass looks awesome, backwards originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 12 May 2009 12:25:00 EST. Releasing right on schedule, standalone versions of Guitar Hero World Tour's drums and guitar are now available at retail. The percussion set and the axe have a suggested retail price of $100 and $70, respectively. The Guitar Hero community site notes the items are available at Best Buy and Gamestop, but we've also seen them available online at Amazon.

The standalone plastic peripherals are currently available only in North America. Europe and Australia will receive the items at "a later date." If you have any questions regarding the compatibility of the items across rhythm games, please check out our "Instrument Compatibility Matrix" for a complete rundown.
Guitar Hero World Tour standalone drums, guitar available now originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 16 Feb 2009 19:40:00 EST. Talismoon, purveyor of replacement Wii shells, has announced a new guitar controller for Wii, the "Rock Thunder Guitar." Normally, a guitar controller from some random third-party wouldn't be terribly noteworthy, but the Rock Thunder Guitar has two features that distinguish it from its peers:

It is compatible with all versions of Guitar Hero and Rock Band on the Wii, and

It is shaped like a Gibson Flying V, which is awesome.

The wireless guitar also features a sleep mode, as well as its own motion sensor, probably for use in Rock Band (which doesn't require a WIimote to be attached to the guitar). Now, as for features like "the buttons all work" and "won't fall apart" -- the product description does not specify.
[Via MaxConsole]
New guitar controller compatible with Rock Band, Guitar Hero, metal originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Feb 2009 18:00:00 EST. Look at it! We mean, just look at it! Have you ever seen something so mind-numbingly precious in your entire life? The only thing cuter than this baby-sized toy Guitar Hero controller (is that a "toy toy?") would be to watch an actual baby playing Guitar Hero with it. ... Oh, and the baby is wearing a powdered wig and neon sunglasses. (Seriously, what's cuter than that?)

The only un-adorable thing is that this tiny contraption was discovered in a box of Frosted Mini Wheats, meaning we're going to have to buy an inferior cereal if we want one of our very own.

(P.S. Even though it has been thoroughly thrashed with the ugly stick, ezGear's "You Rock Guitar" is actually a nifty bit of kit. Labeled "the world's most advanced video game and music controller" by its maker, the guitar is compatible with all current music games on the Wii, and swaps out the traditional strum bar and colored fretboard buttons for real strings and a multi-touch pad respectively (despite how it looks, there are no strings on the fretboard).

There's a bunch of non-Wii functionality in the You Rock. It can hook up to your PC or Mac (where it works with programs such as Garage Band, Sonar, and Finale), and can additonally link to your iPod, iPhone, or MP3 player, allowing you to "jam along" with your favorite Showaddywaddy tracks (yes, we know). You can even connect it to a guitar amp or mixer!

Alas, the peripheral's many functions mean it will launch in Q2 or Q3 with a price tag of $149.99. If you think you could get some use out of this besides playing on the Wii, that might make this worth it. While you wait, make the jump for the cheesiest trailer we've seen in forever.

Continue reading CES 2009: ezGear showcases 'most advanced music game controller'

CES 2009: ezGear showcases 'most advanced music game controller' originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 19:11:00 EST. If, for some reason, you suddenly find yourself both in need of an extra Wii Guitar Hero controller and a little light on cash -- no idea what could put so many people in such a state at this particular time -- you may be interested in today's Amazon Deal of the Day.

For $25.98 (just enough to qualify for free shipping!), the retailer is offering the Nyko Frontman guitar controller in either white or yellow. Both include interchangeable pickguards for a bit of customization. Of course, this guitar was originally designed for Guitar Hero III, and consequently does not feature the freaky touch pad business that the newer World Tour guitars do. But as a second guitar (or a bass) it should be fine.
Price rollback on Frontman guitars originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 28 Oct 2008 17:21:00 EST. Many of us will find it easy to imagine the following scenario, having lived it a little over a year ago with the release of an alarmingly similar title -- hordes of rhythm game junkies returned home last night from midnight launch parties at various retailers, cumbersome Guitar Hero: World Tour bundles in tow. Shortly after failing "Eye of the Tiger" for the third time in a row, an upsetting discovery is made -- one (or more) of the bundled instruments doesn't work as intended. The rocking is abated! Hearts are broken! Hands are wrung! Teeth are gnashed!

Sadly, such a scenario has reportedly been experienced by many a concerned forum poster, as threads stating issues with the game's peripherals have sprung up like discontent weeds. Their complaints are many -- one GameFAQs thread includes reports from players with unresponsive cymbals and, less commonly, drum heads; some posters decry their guitar's inability to register every strum; and some complain of faulty fret buttons.

We should point out that there are a number of forum posters who have stated complete satisfaction with their newly acquired fake instruments -- still, Activision has been quick to direct those with busted periphs to their customer service page, where information on how to get warranty replacements from RedOctane is given. We certainly hope the replacement process is a speedy one -- not that you don't already have a gaggle of fully functional instrumentrollers strewn across your den.

[Thanks, Neb.]
Report: Some Guitar Hero World Tour peripherals not functioning properly originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 26 Oct 2008 20:00:00 EST. Just go with it.

The Rage Wireless Wii guitar from Performance Design Products has been recalled due to its tendency to burn human flesh if not handled correctly. Well, it burned one set of flesh, at least, and that was enough. According to the official recall, if the batteries are installed incorrectly, something with the circuit board will cause those batteries to leak. That can't possibly enhance your fake-music-playing experience. If you happen to have one of these, check the manufacturer's website for more recall information.

Do not buy (or keep) guitars that have the potential to hurt you worse than you have ever been burned.
While some musicians might snobbily mock those who spastically flail around on Guitar Hero's plastic controller ("Like, lol, why not just learn to play a real guitar?" is something we read far too often), others embrace our hobby, and use elements of it to further their own music.

Rob Morris is one such person. According to his collection of YouTube videos, Morris regularly performs with a Wii Remote duct-taped to his Stratocaster, where it doubles up as a whammy bar. This in turn allows him to add tremolo, or bend the pitch of his notes by up to an octave -- all by using the attached Wiimote's accelerometer. And look, here comes the science: this is achieved by "sending the Wiimote data to a computer running Max/MSP, which then sends data via MIDI to a Digitech pedal."

Ooookay. We imagine that Activision Blizzard has more green cash money than a number of medium-sized countries thanks to their ownership of some ridiculously profitable franchises. While the skeptical industry analyst might expect them to sit on their surplus, or perhaps swim through it Scrooge McDuck style, a recent announcement from Activision revealed that they're using said wealth to provide faux-rockers with a pretty terrific pre-order bonus for Guitar Hero: World Tour -- an extra guitar peripheral.

As far as we can tell, the offer is only extended to those living (and purchasing rhythm games) in the UK, and is limited to pre-orders of the GH:WT bundle (currently retailing for £150 in most online stores). While it's scientific fact that the modern gaming enthusiast already owns approximately seven guitar peripherals, newcomers to the rockstar simulation genre will now be able to play with a full band without incurring any pesky fees for an extra axe. Would-be bassists, rejoice!
Activision giving free guitar with UK pre-orders of Guitar Hero: World Tour bundle originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 20 Sep 2008 15:30:00 EST. Even though we regard Activision as greedy for its approach to downloadable content and subscription models, we have to confess we're impressed by Guitar Hero World Tour's preorder gift of a totally free guitar.

The company just announced the scheme, but don't get too excited, because there are a couple of disclaimers to this. One: as far as we can tell, this is currently a UK-only offer (one that includes all online and high street retailers). Two: you do have to buy the full band set, which is currently going for around £150 at most online stores; still, this does allow you to have a bass player in your band from the get-go. Here, Activision, have some props from us.

Activision giving away free guitar with World Tour preorders originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 18 Sep 2008 15:28:00 EST. Our friends at PS3 Fanboy recently had a chance to try out the guitar equivalent of the ION Drum Rocker: Starpex's premium (i.e. not plastic) guitar controller, which more or less looks like a gutted Fender Stratocaster. Their verdict is that the Starpex plays very well, but the $180 price tag is likely to turn off more than a few people. Bonus points for being fully compatible with both Guitar Hero and Rock Band, but no word on an Xbox 360 version. The Starpex will be available for PlayStation 3 and PS2 rockers, with a Wii version reportedly on the way later.

One of these guitars is a real guitar, and one of them is a video game controller. It's hard to tell at first -- which is exactly what the Starpex is going for. Unlike other Guitar Hero and Rock Band controllers on the market, this is meant to emulate the experience of playing on a real guitar. The construction of the guitar is a testament to that: this is a hefty device, weighing almost as much as a real guitar. Its full size makes the Guitar Hero controller look even more like the toy it is. The solid wood finish looks fantastic, and feels absolutely great to the touch. Even the strap that's included with the controller is well-made: the thicker fabric made it far more comfortable to wear.

Of course, what good is a guitar if it can't play as well as its competitors? In spite of its large size, we found the buttons to be as familiar as ever. The guitar may be larger, but the buttons are located in the exact same place. The strum bar is infinitely improved over the Guitar Hero and Rock Band guitars -- gone are the days where you'll hear your guitar instead of the music. The noise of hitting the strum button has been considerably muted. The tilt sensor is also responsive, and the addition of the easy-to-hit Star Power button near the strum bar is much appreciated.

Continue reading Hands-on with the incredibly luxurious Starpex guitar

Hands-on with the incredibly luxurious Starpex guitar originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Aug 2008 21:15:00 EST. Sure, $200 might sound outrageous for a controller, but after viewing their full-sized (and realistically weighted) wireless Stratocaster and Precision Bass guitars, complete with foot pedals for easier "overdrive" activation, the list of things we would rather drop two Benjamins on quickly evaporated.

The heavyweight axes will be available Q1 2009, but Engadget got a sneak peek at some of Catz's less publicized periphs, due out this fall. These include M.I.C. ($30), a microphone with built-in buttons from a standard Xbox 360 controller, Portable Drums ($60), which include four flat pads that can be used on any surface, the "Official Cymbals" ($30 for 3 or $15 each), which will plug into three slots on the kit's center console, and the Kick Drum Screen -- though we're not exactly comfortable calling a circular piece of cardboard you apply to the front of your faux drum kit a "peripheral".
Mad Catz shows off line of Rock Band 2 peripherals at E3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 19 Jul 2008 12:30:00 EST. After talking with Nyko this morning, we wanted to know about the compatibility of the company's wireless FrontMan guitars for Rock Band and Guitar Hero games. There is currently no Xbox 360 wireless guitar because the company hasn't resolved licensing issues with Microsoft. Check out the compatibility after the break; in the future we may make one of our official Joystiq compatibility guitar matrices for third-party guitars.
Continue reading Nyko guitar compatibility information

Nyko guitar compatibility information originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 16 Jul 2008 08:00:00 EST.
