There's not much surprise to be found in the rumored existence of another Dead Space sequel, is there? According to purported plot details published by Siliconera, however, you're in for less of a shock and more of a creeping, unshakeable chill. (Dead Space 3 has not been announced, so beware of potential spoilers beyond this point.)

According to the site's mole, Dead Space 3 dumps perennially imperiled engineer Isaac Clarke on Tau Volantis, a frigid planet blanketed in snowstorms. Donning a snowsuit (with temperature indicated inconveniently on the back?), he attempts to locate lost friends and other signs of humanity. And we can't imagine a bit of unpleasant weather deterring those despicable necromorphs.

The change of location (if accurately reported) sounds intriguing, though we won't hear more until EA decides to announce Dead Space 3 officially. Last we heard, Dead Space 2 had shipped over 2 million copies -- enough to be deemed one of EA's "strong, growing franchises."
Rumor: Dead Space 3 plot details leaked originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 26 Sep 2011 18:45:00 EST.
Joystiq interviews Visceral Games and finds out how one gruesome minute of Dead Space 2 was made.

In the future, our starship captains won't be as blindly heroic as their television counterparts. Their years of virtual training -- inside holo-capsule games like Dead Space 13: Amputheater -- will impart every single reason to avoid stranded ships and suspect space colonies. Even here, in 2011, Dead Space 2 provides an uncomfortable glimpse at the scary doors, inadequate fluorescent lighting and snarling horrors that await us off-planet. And that's before you die and come back to vicious near-life as a necrotized bag of flesh, running around wildly with scissors for hands.

The inhospitable world of Dead Space 2 and the creatures that make a rickety existence within it hardly seem worthy of care or devotion, yet it's all you see in every fuggy, expertly lit scene. There's no better way to see the detail-driven efforts of developer Visceral Games than by narrowing your focus to just one minute of the game, in which you're forced to watch a man shed every semblance of humanity and transform into a grotesque mess of flesh.

It's probably not as painful as it looks, I found out, because the poor guy doesn't have a brain.
Continue reading The Demise of Dead Space 2's Franco Delille: How Visceral Killed a Man in One Minute

The Demise of Dead Space 2's Franco Delille: How Visceral Killed a Man in One Minute originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 21 Feb 2011 17:06:00 EST. EA has announced that early copies of Dead Space 2 (due out next Tuesday, January 25) will include a code to unlock special "Ser Isaac of Clarke" armor in Dragon Age 2, which arrives March 8. As you can see in the video after the break, the armor is a little more, well, medieval than Clarke's rig in Dead Space, but the resemblance is certainly there.

And it's not just purty -- the armor's got rune slots in it; requires high dexterity and cunning skills to wear; and adds bonuses to armor and crit damage. According to the fine print, it seems like Xbox 360 and PC codes will be sharable across platforms, but the PS3 code from Dead Space 2 will only unlock the armor in the PS3 version of Dragon Age 2. If Isaac Clarke's career as an alien-slicing space-gineer never works out, maybe he can just stick with video game cameos -- he's already got quite the resumé.
Continue reading Dead Space 2 includes code for 'Ser Isaac of Clarke' armor in Dragon Age 2

Dead Space 2 includes code for 'Ser Isaac of Clarke' armor in Dragon Age 2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 20 Jan 2011 20:30:00 EST. If you saw that awfully cute trailer for EA's upcoming MySims Sky Heroes title, you probably wondered the same thing everyone else did: What's a decidedly M-rated character doing in an E-rated setting? Not only does Dead Space's Isaac Clarke make a cameo in the game as a playable chibi pilot, but Mass Effect's Commander Shepard is there as well. Joystiq cornered MySims assistant producer Matthew Salazar at a preview event today to find out.

"This is not just a game for kids," he said. "It's the sort of game that the older generation will play with the younger generation." And the references don't stop with EA characters. "There are a lot of Top Gun references in here," he confided, "and no 10-year-olds are going to get all of those." The characters may be M-rated, but Salazar doesn't expect the kids to see them that way. When younger players see the Isaac character, "there's just a cool spaceman in a suit."

And the development team had a selfish reason to include some famous EA characters as well -- "we did it because we think it's cool," said Salazar. All of video gaming's big mascots in the past, like Mario and Sonic, have been cuddly and family friendly, so it's funny to think of grimy M-rated characters as cute brand representations, but in this game, that's what they are.
Why Isaac Clarke and Commander Shepard are in MySims Sky Heroes originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 23:00:00 EST. Got Skate 3? Want to bust kickflips as everyone's favorite outer space engineer, Isaac Clarke? By inputting the code "deadspacetoo" into the Cheats area under the Extras section, you'll unlock the Dead Space protagonist for use in Free Play mode. Who knew he could be so nimble in that outfit?

Keen observers may notice Clarke riding on a futuristic board. That's because, by inputting the code, you'll also gain the new deck. Sorry, it's non-transferable between skaters -- we tried.
Dead Space's Isaac Clarke playable in Skate 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 22 May 2010 05:30:00 EST. In an inspiring attempt to try and take even more gratuitous liberties with the works of Dante Alighieri, Visceral Games has announced a Europe-only special edition bundle of its upcoming Hell-based action title, Dante's Inferno. The "Death Edition" bundle comes with a copy of the poem, some making-of documentaries, and an art book. However, its greatest bonus is a new skin for the game's scythe-wielding protagonist: The slot-helmeted outfit of Dead Space's hero, Isaac Clarke. Check out the full costume after the jump.

Now that we think of it, there's something pretty similar to this cross-promotion in the text of Dante's epic poem:

"I saw multitudes
to every side of me; their howls were loud
while, wheeling weights, they used their chests to push.
They struck against each other; at that point,
this space miner came in and killed them with this big scythe.
Needless to say, it was pretty [expletive deleted] radical."
Terrifying video game news site Rely On Horror claims to have recently gotten its hands on the next issue of Game Informer, which contains a pretty comprehensive breakdown of the new methods of Necromorph murder featured in Dead Space 2. According to the site, the Informer article reveals that the game's designers are trying to make the game spookier, placing hero Isaac Clarke (who learned the ability to speak between games, it seems) in more death-defying situations, and likely a few impossible-to-defy-death situations as well.

According to the report, the game's action has moved off of the Ishimura, instead placing Clarke on the similarly monster-infested interstellar city Sprawl, which dwarfs the original game's setting in size. Finally, the article supposedly ends with the developer dropping the following tease regarding multiplayer: "All I can say is it's really fun, and you'll get to strategically dismember your friends." Oh, man -- Bushido Laser-Saw confirmed! Or, rather, it might be confirmed. There's no way to tell for sure until we get our hands on the Clarke-covered magazine.
Not official art, actually

Do us a favor and read the following sentence really slowly -- seriously, savor it. It's been hinted and teased at enough to give the world's remaining necromorphs a heart attack, but Dead Space 2 has finally been officially announced for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Now, you might be wondering why you had to take your time with that easily understandable sentence. Well ... we don't really have anything else to tell you. It's still Visceral, it's still Isaac Clark, it's still the necromorph invasion. We don't even have a release window. The best thing EA has to say is, "Survival isn't the only thing on Isaac's mind in Dead Space 2 - this time, he calls the shots," which makes it sound like our engineer protagonist dumped his abusive boyfriend and moved to the big city to work in an office pool with Dolly Parton and Morgan Fairchild.

... Actually, that sounds pretty good.
Dead Space 2 announced for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 07 Dec 2009 09:20:00 EST. We're not ones to judge, but when we go down to the country club (haha, just go with it), we try to avoid wearing our CEC Mining Hazard Suit. You see, someone in Tiger Woods 10 clearly likes hitting the links in the same outfit worn by Isaac Clarke in Dead Space. Actually, could it be Isaac? Hmmm.

An added bonus: Wearing the suit will unlock the "No Known Survivors" achievement for 35 points. Now we can't help but wonder if Tiger Woods will show up as a skin in Dead Space 2. Or as a suit made of skin ... ewwww. Check out someone teeing off in the CEC Mining Hazard Suit after the break.

[Via 360 Sync]
Continue reading Dead Space suit tees up in Tiger Woods 10

Dead Space suit tees up in Tiger Woods 10 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 19 Jun 2009 11:25:00 EST.
