We rarely, if ever, write rebuttals to stories posted on the esteemed, list-friendly publication known as Time, but we've got more than a few bones to pick with its recently posted "50 Worst Inventions" list. Around every turn, the list seems to get it wrong. For instance: FarmVille? There are 70 million people who'd disagree with that one. And Virtual Boy? The world's first fully-3D game console/amateur LASIK surgery machine? That's about as progressive and brilliant as inventions get.

Check out the full list of so-called failed products on Time's site, and see if you share our feelings. Like, auto-tuning, guys? Really? One of the worst inventions ever? And Olestra? The ultimate nutritional cooking supplement? Did they read this list before they published it?
Game Developer magazine (and its brainy Game Developer Research division) recently published its second annual enumerated accolades for the fine folks who make the games that you crudely jam into your home entertainment consoles -- or, in layman's terms, the "Top 50 Developers 2009" report. The rankings are based on how many games a studio created, the sales for those games, and their metacritic ratings. Quality of box art and amount of 'tude possessed by the games' protagonists, however, were not taken into consideration.

The results are utterly shocking -- for the second year in a row, Nintendo took top honors, with fellow money-printing organization Blizzard taking second place. Ubisoft Montreal skyrocketed from 12th place in the '08 report to third place in the most recent rankings. Regardless of your fanboyism for a certain developer, we think we can all agree -- in such a financially (and employmentmentally) challenging time, we're just glad to hear there's at least 50 game developers that haven't been forced to shut down.

The full list is posted after the jump.

[Thanks, Braz!]
Continue reading Game Developer Research lists 'Top 50 Developers' of 2009

Game Developer Research lists 'Top 50 Developers' of 2009 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 17 Jun 2009 13:15:00 EST. Only an utterly clueless fanboy will ignore Shigeru Miyamoto's contributions to gaming, and any Nintendo enthusiast can never deny the quality of a series like Halo or God of War. No matter the platform, there are games which make up the foundation of this medium as we've come to know it.

Traditionally, the formula would seem to be game made by a respectable company + a few years to let it sink in = indisputable classic. Yet there are a few that still provoke debate.

These are games that are neither universally adored nor hated. They almost always spark conversation, and are considered by some to be an acquired taste. Here are the Top 5 games that we all can't decide if they're classics or not.

With that in mind, I've decided to take a nostalgic look back to an easier, care-free time: 2008.

Our study began on the 2nd of July with a look at the laughably terrible Homie Rollerz. It will continue indefinitely (in other words, until my overlords decide to give me the axe), or until we can come to a concrete and atomic definition of "shovelware."

That's not to say that we've been woolgathering this past half-year. Indeed, we've learned quite a bit about what constitutes shovelware and what doesn't. Here's a handful of our most acute observations:
Continue reading Bury the Shovelware: 2008 in Review

Bury the Shovelware: 2008 in Review originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 13:00:00 EST. Well, sorry, but you'll have to forget them all. Yep, every last one of 'em. That's because we now have a new list which is also claiming to feature the 500 best-selling games of 2007 in Japan. This one has been compiled by Enterbrain (the original was from rival data-gatherers Media Create), and it's ever so slightly different.

The good news is that, despite the origins of each list being different, the overriding message is still the same, and that message is: DS rules all yaaay. Both lists agree that Wii Sports was top dog, but the top DS games have been jumbled about. Now, for example, it is the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Explorers games that are top of the DS pile, while Mario Party DS drops to second. The changes are subtle, but definitely exist. Hit the break to see the top ten DS games!
Continue reading Another exhaustive list of Japan's best-sellers of 2007

Another exhaustive list of Japan's best-sellers of 2007 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 17 Jun 2008 22:00:00 EST. When you think about a franchise that has been around as long as Mario Kart, you see it's hard to validate each title as the series gets farther along. One of the ways to validate the game for fans has been to offer a complete and full roster of racers. Well, we're going to go through the characters we wished were in the games, yet woefully aren't. So read on and see what changes we would like to have happen to the roster in upcoming installments in the Mario Kart franchise!

Characters we'd like to see in Mario Kart originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 23 Apr 2008 12:45:00 EST. Perhaps we're just cynics, but we're not at all surprised that this list of the 100 top-selling games in the U.S. and Europe isn't filled with more good games. We understand that not everyone has the tastes of the DS Fanboy staff (as much as we try to ram it down your throat), but some of these are just crazy.

Of course, some easy picks like Pokemon Diamond & Pearl and Brain Age 2 populate the list, but where is the love for some other great DS games? Phantom Hourglass at the 23rd spot? For shame. 1.2 million copies of High School Musical: Makin' the Cut sold and Drawn to Life only selling 820,000 copies? For shame.

In all, it's an interesting list that you should take a look at.

[Via Joystiq]
Top 100 games sold in the last year originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Apr 2008 16:00:00 EST.
We love "Greatest of All Time" lists as much as the next guy, but Exploding Barrel's tally of the best cooperative multiplayer titles has a few glaring holes that we felt would be irresponsible to ignore. For your reference, here's their top ten:

Ikari Warriors

Contra

Doom

Double Dragon

Golden Axe

Halo 3

Lego Star Wars

Gears of War

Toe Jam & Earl

Rock Band

While the list pays proper tribute to fanboy favorites like Contra and Toejam & Earl, we have a few suggestions for improving this "draft."

First on the agenda, expand the list to include the classics pictured above. Second, replace the "inferior" games with more appropriate titles. We're sure no one would mind if we switched out Doom with Secret of Mana. While we're at it, let's cross out Halo 3 and pencil in TMNT II: The Arcade Game. And Gears of War? More like Gears of Let's Play Zombies Ate My Neighbors Instead, right?

Now that you've heard our arguments, what co-op games would you rank up there?

[Via GoNintendo]
An incomplete list of 'The Greatest Co-Op Games of All Time' originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 27 Mar 2008 18:00:00 EST. Instead, our reality would be dark and cold, our fear of what is right in front of us only challenged by our incredible lack of knowing what is right in front of us. It would probably lead us to suicide.

But, lo and behold, the passage of time flowed in favor of Nintendo, as the Game Boy lead to the Game Boy Advance and the Game Boy Advance lead to <strike>that stupid Game Boy Micro thing</strike> the Game Boy Micro and then, finally, to the DS. But what about all of those great Game Boy games that time forgot?

Well, now is the time to rustle up those nostalgic memories you have pattering around your noggin. The games are:

Rolan's Curse 2

Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters

Mole Mania

Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge

Mega Man V

Kirby's Dreamland 2

Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land

Personally, we would've liked to see Street Fighter II get some love (kidding!). What do you all think? What games do you like? On the one hand, we want to get you this potentially juicy information as quickly as possible. On the other hand, these leaks are often based on sketchy information that can end up being highly variable and misleading to the average reader.

Sure enough, that's basically what Sony said by way of addressing the leaked list. In a statement reprinted by Eurogamer, the company teasingly tells us that listed content like "Ratchet: Quest for Booty" and "Dark Mist" "may be working titles or placeholders subject to later confirmation." Similarly, dates for everything from Super Stardust DLC to Home are officially "not confirmed until issued as part of a press release or formal announcement." So, to summarize, while the list itself is probably authentic, the information contained within it should be considered "subject to change" at best.
Sony comments on leaked PSN release list originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 18 Mar 2008 11:30:00 EST. Much like the average review score report released earlier this week, we're sure that the report we're about to discuss will serve as ammunition for many a fanboy feud in the coming months -- Game Developer Research (a branch of Game Developer Magazine which was created in hopes of bringing a "new level of empirical measurement" to the gaming market) recently released their "Top 50 Developers 2008" report. Sadly, Backbone Emeryville, the artisanal minds behind last year's XBLA sleeper hit Yaris, didn't make the cut.

Basing their rankings on sales figures, prolificacy, average review scores, and results from over 700 surveys issued to industry suits, GDR's list seems to be the most well-founded developer ranking we've ever seen (though Yarisians would probably disagree). We've got the whole list after the jump -- aren't you curious how your faves placed?
Continue reading Game Developer Research releases "Top 50 Developers 2008" report

Game Developer Research releases "Top 50 Developers 2008" report originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 08 Mar 2008 17:30:00 EST. And who could blame them for placing Nintendo's main man at the top of their list of (industry) people of the year. These are the twenty-five individuals the folks at Next-Gen felt made the greatest contributions to the gaming industry this year ... and Iwata wasn't the only one from Nintendo to be recognized. Outgoing VP George Harrison ranked in at 18th, and Yoshiaki Koizumi, director of Super Mario Galaxy, turned up in the 6th position. But the chief of chiefs reigned supreme, and is it any surprise? Satoru Iwata had led Nintendo in this banner year, and as dedicated fans, we salute him. We're just glad that Next-Gen does, as well.
Did you know Iwata is the man? originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 21 Dec 2007 13:30:00 EST. Frankly, we're shocked. Number 7 is a very respectable spot for any game, considering we're talking about the 10 best games of the year, but come on. This is The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass we're talking about here, folks. It's an amazing title and arguable the best in what has been an amazing year full of quality titles on the DS. Heck, this time of year, we can't think of a better gift than a Phantom Hourglass bundle.

Besides Phantom Hourglass, what would you consider to be the best of the best on the DS this year?
Phantom Hourglass ranks at 7 on Time's top 10 games of 2007 list originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Dec 2007 17:00:00 EST. You don't have to take our word for it! Dun-un, dun!

As expected, their list isn't perfect -- if it were, River City Ransom would occupy at least seven of the spots, leaving just enough room for Super Mario Bros. 3, Mega Man 2, and an emergency copy of River City Ransom. But it would be naive to think that any collection of NES games with "Top anything" written in proximity would satisfy everyone, unless, of course, it was a list of Top Gun titles (all two of them). So feel free to comment with your own selection of "Absolutely Best NES Games Ever."
Somebody's top ten NES games originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 17 Oct 2007 18:00:00 EST. Games Radar has crafted another one of their hilarious Top 7 lists, this time about the "Top 7 Most Mispronounced Game Names." Nihon Falcom has two of the seven entries on the list, proving that they're kind of mean about titles. We remember that every magazine article about Ys back on the Turbografx-16 CD included a note about pronunciation ("ease"), because it's really not obvious.

Topping the list is a certain Nintendo franchise whose name is delightfully, and intentionally, mangled by meme addicts across the web, including pretty much everyone here. Our mispronunciation: let us hint at it.

Gotta mispronounce 'em all originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 27 Jun 2007 15:05:00 EST.
Harmonix has posted an open letter to future rockers asking what they'd like to see in their upcoming title Rock Band. Other than letting us know that the Rock Band guitar will be modeled after the Fender Stratocaster, we really don't know much more about the title. Obviously, the song list isn't complete yet and they need our help. We'll give them song ideas as long as they promise to keep the peripheral prices in check.

Now remember, as much as Harmonix might read our comments to see what people suggest, it's probably best to officially submit them directly. Things we'd like to see are contemporary, but a little off the beaten path. The fear with Rock Band is that because MTV and EA are involved, it's going to be all, like, Total Request Live (is that show still on?). How about some Cake, Beck and Scissor Sisters? Thankfully, Harmonix has always been good about including local Boston bands (their offices are in Cambridge, Ma) in their games to keep some true indie flavor in the mix. We're sure you all have suggestions -- let em rip! But remember, submit them on the official Rock Band site to have some chance of making it count.
Harmonix wants to know what you'd Rock Band to originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 Jun 2007 04:00:00 EST. That's so two years ago. The new buzz, apparently, is that EA is the second best place for new graduates to work, according to a Fortune Magazine list.

They make a decent enough case -- EA employees get five to ten free games per year, heavy discounts on games and systems, plus amenities like an on-site gym, a DVD library and stock options. Still, given the past complaints, we can't help but gape at Fortune's statement that EA employees "might not have time to spend any of the $60,000 starting salary that's offered to the average entry-level worker." They had to understand the irony dripping from that line when they wrote it. Didn't they?

[Thanks Keavin]
EA an awful place to work. A relief. And also an embarrassment. Whose call was it to put MotorStorm out there for two weeks without buddy compatibility?

It may have been a minute inconvenience -- given that it was swiftly remedied -- but the haphazardness of the matter is indicative of the PlayStation Network. That's not to say Xbox Live titles aren't without their necessary patches and bug fixes; au contraire, online "updates" have become standard. But a friends list? Would enforcing some very basic PSN requirements really cost Sony its freedom?

[Via PS3 Fanboy]
MotorStorm gets friendlier originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Mar 2007 20:00:00 EST. Nintendo wants to own 2007, as well. Not that we're complaining; after all, we are total slaves to our beloved handheld. But it just seems altogether crazy that there could be so many lists predicting great games in the coming year, and that the lists could vary so much. No matter your pleasure, 2007 is bound to be packed with more DS games than you can possibly afford. And in celebration of our future indecision, IGN has offered a list celebrating ten of the best coming games for the year.

We've included the full IGN list after the jump, and we'd love to hear how it compares to some of the other lists you've seen since the end of last year, because there's been a ton. We've even dipped a toe into the list-making process ourselves.
Continue reading Yet another 'games to watch' list

Yet another 'games to watch' list originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 25 Jan 2007 15:15:00 EST. It still works." src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/01/oldschoolgc.jpg" />Lately, a couple of lists have been speeding through the tubes of the intertron, reminding new Wii-owners that in fact, your new system has all the functionality of one recently passed away: the Nintendo Gamecube. As such, the library of playable games from launch is actually quite large. But how is one to discern the hidden gems amongst such a vast field? Worry not, fair readers: we're here to help.

Let's be fair: you're here reading Nintendo Wii Fanboy, for goodness' sake, so you probably know about absolute wonders such as Super Smash Bros Melee, Metroid Prime, and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. These games, of course, must be played under penalty of death. What follows are fifteen fourteen of our personal recommendations, leading you from the AAA-released to barely known wonders of the little purple box. Most of these games can still be found, used, at many outlets nationwide. Take a look, and buy a game! We believe in you.

Staff recommendations: Gamecube originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 05 Jan 2007 17:00:00 EST. The numbers they use appear to be different from the Media Create numbers we usually use, but one has to wonder how in the world they can claim accuracy down to individual units. We think it has something to do with spirits. Here's the top ten (Japanese sales only, remember), and for the rest, follow the link!

1. More Brain Training (Nintendo) - 3,417,956 sold

2. New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo) - 3,351,234 sold

You know what that means. The holiday shopping season has begun! Because all the other major gaming sites are doing it, we decided to make a holiday gift guide as well! These are the games that I think will make any good PSP owner happy.

$50 or below
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories - Quite possibly the biggest portable adventure yet. GTA fans and fans of 80s pop culture will dig this game.

$40 or below
Daxter - The great graphics and lack of load times makes this platformer a great technical showcase.
Gitaroo-Man Lives! - My favorite PSP game of the year. Get it for the music lover.
Loco Roco - Sony proves that there are games for kids on its system. This one is it.
SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 2 - The online tactical shooter returns. Online junkies will love this game.
Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror - Although not an FPS, the game's controls and extensive multiplayer modes is perfect for shooter lovers.
Tekken: Dark Resurrection - It's the only fighting game you'll want to give to a PSP owner.

$30 or below
Lumines II - With nearly a hundred different musical skins to unlock, this easy-to-learn puzzle game is perfect for anyone, especially if they missed the original game.

$20 or below
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories - For less than $20, the original LCS sports a ton of gameplay at an insanely affordable price.
Mega Man: Powered Up - This 2D platformer features great graphics, classic gameplay, and a level editor that lets you share creations. At under $20, it's a steal.
Wipeout Pure - This launch game still sports some of the system's best graphics. With tons of free downloadable content, this is a great value.
PSP Fanboy holiday gift guide originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 24 Nov 2006 13:40:00 EST. Since PC World is a European retailer, it may not be much of a surprise that they've anointed Nintendo in the console wars for this holiday season (as there's no PS3 in store), but they've also picked the console as the hottest must-have when it comes to electronics. The Wii took the top spot of their ten predictions for the hottest movers and shakers of the season. Unlike many other lists, however, the Wii is nowhere near the most expensive item on this wishlist. Check after the jump for the full rundown.

PC World was one of the early outlets to offer preorders for the Wii in the UK ... looks like they've taken off!
Continue reading Wii tops PC World's holiday list

Wii tops PC World's holiday list originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Oct 2006 12:28:00 EST. Indeed, only six games in their history have ever received a perfect 40/40 review score.

Since their opinion is highly valued, a couple people over at GoNintendo have compiled a comprehensive list of the top-scoring DS games on the market. First place belongs solely to Nintendogs, picking up one of those coveted 40/40 scores, followed by Meteos with a 38/40, and then Animal Crossing: Wild World at 37/40. For a (very) full list, click that underlined blue clicky thing at the bottom of the post.

(If you were wondering, the six perfect scores belong to (in chronological order): The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Vagrant Story, Soul Calibur, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, Nintendogs, and Final Fantasy XII.)
A comprehensive list of Famitsu review scores originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 20 Aug 2006 10:49:00 EST. So we were perhaps a little taken aback -- but not outright shocked -- when we stumbled across Arthur's Hall of Viking Manliness, a site about (you guessed it!) being manly. With thoughtful articles like "Spreading the Gospel of Chew" and "Women Who Smoke are Whores," Arthur's Hall is not for the unmanly.

How exciting then, that they've focused that same manly acumen to lift up -- with huge, sweaty, rippling biceps -- the "10 Manliest Video Games Ever" from obscurity into whatever part of Valhalla is reserved for such notable artifacts. The list itself is notable for its sheer size. At over 4000 words, it's a manly screed in defense of games with a certain amount of manly violence and difficulty, with an admitted 8-bit bias. Why an 8-bit bias? Because "modern manly games like God of War are only pretenders." Got it, wimp?

Their choice for manliest game ever: the classic, 8-bit shooter Contra ... now you're talking manly. The manly way to play it: no Konami code, no Spread gun, just two shirtless dudes, with pixelated abs so hard they look like they were carved from stone, hanging out in the jungle together ... what's not manly about that?

[Via Destructoid]
Manly site lists 10 manliest games of all time originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 27 Jun 2006 12:00:00 EST. Thanks to the folks at the Gamerscore Blog, we've learned that the next Xbox back compat update "should be out in the next few weeks."

In his earlier blast against BC, Peter Moore proclaimed that nobody is concerned about it anymore, but thankfully the gentler Gamerscore peeps have set the record straight, stating: "We know for a fact that there are lots of people who continue to care about backwards compatibility, including the 'Emulation Ninjas' who are working full time on the updates. And those of us posting on this blog. And, of course, many of you."

We suppose quarterly updates to the BC list aren't TOO bad (hey, they sure beat semiannual dashboard updates), but getting more than a dozen titles to work each time would definitely help a lot more for those with original Xbox favorites they'd prefer to play on their new machines. Personally, this blogger would like to see the following titles added to the list: Dead or Alive Ultimate, Doom 3, Capcom vs. SNK 2, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Project Gotham Racing 2, LEGO Star Wars, Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, Soul Calibur II, and Capcom Classics Collection. It may not be realistic to expect Street Fighter support when Hyper Fighting is set to hit Live Arcade sometime in the near future, but one can (vainly) hope.
