When Microsoft recently flipped the switch to turn Games For Windows Live into a free-for-all, several cross-platform multiplayer games apparently brought their Xbox 360 denizens with them. That's right, all three cross-platform titles (Shadowrun, Universe at War: Earth Assault and Lost Planet: Colonies) can be played online by any Xbox 360 user with a high-speed internet connection -- freeloading Xbox Live Silver account holders specifically -- according to a thread on Xbox Forums. Of course, the catch is you've got to have a copy of one of the participating game discs. So when Joystiq went to verify the reports, we realized our chest-o-games only contained the good ones. Any far less snobby readers care to shout out a "yea" or "nay" on the matter? [Update: X3F's Xav de Matos has confirmed that the Xbox 360 version of Lost Planet: Colonies can be played online using a Silver account.]

In the interim, we've contacted Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360, who told us we can expect Microsoft to issue an official statement shortly.

Update 7:10pm: And we've heard back from a Microsoft rep who tells us, "Last week we announced that we were taking off the Gold-only restriction for multiplayer gaming over Games for Windows- LIVE. For a limited time, we are offering free online multiplayer on Xbox 360/ Games for Windows titles that offer LIVE cross platform play. This promotion won't last, so we encourage everyone to take advantage of it while they can." You heard the man, go take advantage of it!

Variety has confirmed that a film adaptation of Lost Planet is indeed in the works via Warner Bros. The script will be penned by X-Men and Watchmen scribe David Hayter, also known as the voice of Solid Snake. WB and Capcom are co-financing the film, with Warner Bros. having worldwide distribution rights.

No details on the plot, but we've submitted our proposal for the film, which would feature LP main character Wayne Holden sneaking through a secret military compound on a remote island. It would be, dare we say, awesome?

We're putting two and two together and getting ... Lost Planet. First we were tipped by a source close to Capcom that the company would have a movie-related announcement at next week's E3, and that it would involve someone "well known to gamers." Next we read that David Hayter, voice of Solid Snake and screenwriter for such films as X2: X-Men United and the upcoming Watchmen, was talking Lost Planet at last week's Anime Expo '08. It all adds up.

As reported by IGN, Hayter said he is "just closing the deal with Warner Bros." to pen a Lost Planet flick while speaking at AX08, although "nothing is confirmed yet." Of course, Capcom's E3 announcement could always be concerning another movie, but the evidence before us is compelling.

One way to re-sell last year's game again is to add a scantily clad babe (and by "babe" we mean "hunk") to the cast of playable characters. Capcom has done just that, importing Dead Rising star Frank West sans clothes (talk about extreme conditioning!) into the repackaged and budget priced Lost Planet: Colonies Edition. But why stop there? We can't be the only ones curious to see (strictly on a scientific level, of course) how Mega Man's unarmed body reacts to the cold.

With titles like Dead Rising and Lost Planet, it seems that Capcom has developed a taste for western cuisine, at least in how it applies to game development. This observation was echoed by Capcom exec Christian Svensson, who in a recent interview noted belief that the Osaka, Japan-based company could look to add an established Western dev to its portfolio in the near future. Confessed Svensson, "I would be sort of surprised if we didn't acquire a western studio in the next two years."

But Capcom knows that it has the pick of the litter, and it isn't about to let just anyone into its ivory tower. "We're not going to acquire anyone that we haven't done a game with," noted Svensson. The exec also stressed that chemistry would play a "critical" role in any future match, leaving just 28 other dimensions of happier, healthier relationships to be sorted out.

If you're still looking for reasons to (re)purchase Lost Planet: Colonies, IGN has outlined four new single player modes for the game. One of those in particular raised an eyebrow: a first-person mode that you can toggle via the menu screen. Curious how the traditionally third-person Lost Planet would look as a FPS? Check out the video above.

Other bonus modes include the self-explanatory Score Attack, a gauntlet of boss fights in Trial Battle Mode and Off Limit Mode, which lets you replay levels at a much greater speed with unlimited ammo. We've embedded a video of Off Limit after the break. Lost Planet: Colonies is coming May 27 on PC and Xbox 360 (still no PS3 confirmation) for $30.

Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Colonies Edition -- known around these parts as Lost Planet: Colonies or Lost Planet 1.5 -- has finally been officially announced. The game is a repackaging of the full Lost Planet title, plus a bunch of additional multiplayer and single-player extras. The good news: It'll cost about $30. The bad news: Colonies Edition multiplayer will be incompatible with current Lost Planet games.

Scheduled for a May 27 release on 360 and PC, Colonies mainly adds new, creative multiplayer modes to the original game. Several are based on holding checkpoints and CTF variants. Our favorite, however, lets one gamer control an Akrid, with the others teaming up to try to take down the alien. Different creatures are available, and we recently saw a demo showing how a spindly, player-controlled giant can make quick kills with its swiping legs.

New playable characters, new weapons, and new levels are also added. Many of those are tuned for these alien battles, giving bunkers for humans to hide from the less-mobile aliens. Xbox 360 and PC players can play against each other using paid, Xbox Live gold accounts. Non-paying PC gamers will still be able to play online, but they'll only face other PCs.

Colonies single-player adds a few new ways to navigate the snowy wastelands. Score Attack awards gamers points for dispatching enemies and destructible objects. Another mode lets gamers fight each boss in order, one after another. And an extreme-action setting juices weapons, player speed, and lets gamers plow through, head-first.

All of this seems great for the Lost Planet newbie, but current players will likely balk at buying the game again. Capcom wanted the multiplayer modes to work between the old and new editions, but cited non-specific "technical reasons" for it not happening. And Capcom hasn't announced a PS3 version, so Sony gamers will also miss out on the newfound action.

We and our dear friends the internet have been doing a fair amount of speculation about what the recently-rated Lost Planet: Colonies could be. The most popular theory? A sequel to Capcom's third person action hit. The least popular? Ritchie's theory that it's an action game featuring Julianna Margulies as a by-the-book cop and Queen Latifah as her sassy sidekick. Now, the real word has come from Capcom via Famitsu and Ritchie got it wrong ... but so did the rest of us. Lost Planet: Colonies is a spruced up version of Lost Planet. Lost Planet 1.5, if you will.

The revamp will have a new female playable character, a new online mode that pits bugs versus humans and includes Xbox 360 and PC cross-platform play. (We don't know what that means for the PS3. Seems there won't be a PS3 version.) That info, it should be noted, checks out for the Japanese version, but we don't yet know the specifics of the North American version. We're assuming it won't be too far off though.

So, what do you think, are you ready to buy Lost Planet again?

Some games seem destined for pre-announcement leaks. Add to that list Lost Planet: Colonies, the supposed next entry in Capcom's third-person action series. First came name drops by both the German ratings board and the ESRB. Now, more embarrassingly, comes a full list of Xbox 360 achievements for the game, before the game has even been officially announced.

360sync stumbled across the achievements, which they were later asked by Capcom to remove. We've confirmed that more information will be made available about the title next week, which leaves us plenty of time to speculate.

The impressive list of achievements hints at a full single player campaign, as well as a bevy of multiplayer modes, leading us to believe that this may very well be a retail title after all, and not simply a downloadable spin-off. Check out the full list of achievements after the break.

Capcom US's official blog is reporting that the Lost Planet: Extreme Condition demo has been safely returned to the Playstation Network, in good working order. According to Capcom, the original problem stemmed from over 100,000 people downloading and running the online demo in its first 24 hours, causing a bit of unexpected server stress.

The Lost Planet demo features elimination and team elimination modes on the Pirate Fortress map, and is limited to 8 players per match. The full title is due out in North America on February 26, and will feature all the additional content from the PC version (and yes, that includes Frank West from the 360-exclusive Dead Rising -- irony of ironies).

Last week's PSN update brought us the demo of Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, but numerous glitches and user complaints have forced Capcom to pull the demo from the Playstation Network, promising to return it once the problems have been solved.

Posting on the official Playstation.Blog, a Capcom representative states that the fixed version will "accurately reflect" the game's online features. The servers for the demo have been also been shut down temporarily, so anyone who has already downloaded the demo will find themselves unable to log on to play. The Capcom rep promises that the team is working hard to deliver the update as soon as possible.

Though removing content for bug-fixes is a tad more unorthodox than simply releasing an update, we assume the issues with the Lost Planet demo were severe enough to warrant its removal, and we're all for whatever gets that content as clean and optimized as possible.

The PlayStation Network becomes host to a misplaced celestial body this week, with a Lost Planet multiplayer demo allowing up to 8 PS3 owners (16 in the full version) to stomp through the snow and park a bullet in someone's parka. Sure, the quality of writing in this post just took a dive, but it's all in service of a segue to Go! Sports Skydiving, a new downloadable $5 title.

Although Capcom has yet to announce Lost Planet: Colonies (or even explain what it is), Gamespot has pointed to the Xbox 360 and PC game's existence on the ESRB's frequently revelatory database. The mysterious Lost Planet: Colonies was first discovered last year, when Germany's USK rated the game and fueled speculation regarding the game's genre and relation to Capcom's 2007 action smash.

The ESRB also lists an equally unannounced Assault Heroes 2 for Xbox 360, which logic would dictate is a sequel to XBLA's well-received Assault Heroes.

Apparently fighting giant alien bugs on a snowy world isn't just a man's job anymore. Famitsu reports that the PS3 version of Lost Planet will allow gamers to play as Luka, the leader of the Snow Pirates from the original game.

Additionally, the PS3 version will also include Joe, Mega Man, and Dead Rising's Frank West, who were originally playable in the PC version. Hey, remember when Lost Planet was a 360-exclusive? So that lasted a while, huh?

Pac-Man Championship Edition (XBLA)

If not worthy of a Top 10 spot, then certainly Pac-Man deserves Joystiq's 'Comeback Player of the Year' award. I covered Pac-Man CE's overblown launch in early June, but it wasn't until I became a devoted player at home that I realized the sheer genius of the first true Pac-Man sequel since 'the Ms.' hit the maze in '82. Designer Toru Iwatani managed to scrape off a quarter-century of rust and fashion a remarkably relevant game that held me down during an otherwise punishing summer drought. Geometry Wars might be the most celebrated, but Pac-Man CE is Xbox Live Arcade's true star.

crackdown
Crackdown (Xbox 360)

Admittedly, Crackdown has become a fading memory, but a good one. Realtime World's sandbox will be remembered as the most satisfying online co-op game of the year, and not as my golden ticket to the Halo 3 Beta.

Baseball? Yes'ir. As my Fightin' Phils battled to their first playoff appearance in 14 years (fourteen!), MLB 07 rarely left my PSP all season. (Okay, I confess, the game hasn't come anywhere near my handheld since the 'Filthies' agonizing first-round exit.)

Picross (DS)

Corny subject matter doesn't diminish Picross' addictive gameplay. "Just one more" should be the motto for this year's best puzzler to feature blocks.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (XBLA)

Does a decade-old game belong on a list of noteworthy 2007 titles? Definitely. Revisiting this classic in late March, I realized how ineptly I had judged SotN in my youth. After I feverishly destroyed the XBLA super-port - 200.6% completion, plus a Richter run-through - I was left with one lingering question: Is this the greatest game of all time...?

  • Heavenly Sword (PS3): Absolute mediocrity. I jonesed so hard for this one, but once in my PS3, I didn't experience a single high.
  • Phantom Hourglass (DS): I'm still searching for that 'Zelda' I fell in love with in '88, reaffirmed in '92 and pledged my soul to in '98.
  • Lost Planet (Xbox 360): Mostly 'meh,' but shoddy controls ruined occasional pockets of fun.
  • Mass Effect (Xbox 360): Moronic AI and generally broken combat has me baffled. Am I playing this wrong?
  • Assassin's Creed (Xbox 360): The essential gameplay elements (climbing and combat) are superb, but the supporting tasks are too few and flawed.

Korean actor Byun-hung Lee, whose likeness was used for the protagonist Wayne Holden in Capcom's Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, has been casted in the upcoming G.I. Joe film to play Storm Shadow, according to the official Capcom blog. The film is expected for release in 2009.

On a related note, has anyone ever noticed the alternate text when highlighting your mouse over Capcom blog links? We particularly laughed at the text for the link related to the G.I. Joe movie: "Directed by the guy who directed Van Helsing? Danger!" We laughed. The screenplay for G.I. Joe was written by Stuart Beattie, who is penning the film adaptation for Deers Gears of War.

Lost Planet Colonies was today rated by USK, the German ratings board, fueling further speculation that a sequel to Lost Planet is already in the works. According to the entry, Colonies is a "3rd-person shooter" being developed for Xbox 360 and will be published (in Germany) by CEG Interactive Entertainment, a European subsidiary of Capcom.

The "Lost Planet Colonies" trademark first surfaced in late May, but Capcom would not confirm that a sequel was in development. A few weeks later, Dutch distributor Nobilis listed Colonies as an Xbox 360 and PC release due in January 2008 -- but again, Capcom remained ambiguous about the alleged title. Today's development is the most definitive evidence of a true Lost Planet continuation, but it's still weak. The USK listing could be an error, and instead of a sequel, Colonies could be the subtitle of the meaty PS3 edition of Lost Planet -- or something entirely different, or nonexistent.

Lost Planet was an early success for Capcom's global initiative (though it flopped in Japan), so it seems likely that a sequel will eventually work its way through the pipeline. Still, there are a lot of other Capcom properties that could (even, should) take precedence.
