One particular standout of the Nvidia Kepler-powered Pro: Apple's decision to use its gorgeous Retina display, as revealed during the company's Worldwide Developers Conference keynote.

Like the last iPad refresh, however, applications and games will have to be updated to utilize the new Retina screen. During his keynote, Apple's Phil Schiller revealed Diablo 3, Blizzard's latest addiction, will be updated for the upcoming laptop model.

The new MacBook Pro line begins shipping today, but if you wanna get your hands on that fancy new Retina display, you'll be shelling out a minimum of $2,200. Blizzard has yet to reveal when the game will be updated for use with the new display, but we'll be sure to ask. For information on models and pricing, and everything else during Apple's WWDC, check out Engadget's ongoing live blog.
Diablo 3 updated with Retina display support for 'next generation' MacBook Pro originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Jun 2012 14:00:00 EST. Unless a blindfold, a bucket of water and a whole lot of bobbing is involved, it's rare to think "Apple" when you're talking about games. But after some tentative tests with a new 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook on one title, Obsessable is optimistic. The site managed to get Warhammer Online up and running in XP via Boot Camp, and the results were impressive, with no graphical hang-ups and only a little bit of installation trouble.

OK, so it's not exactly Alienware and WAR isn't exactly Crysis. But it's definitely a step in the right direction. If you need to see Apple and gaming fused with your own eyes, there are a couple of videos right here.
Warhammer Online runs fine on new MacBook 2008 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 17 Oct 2008 00:30:00 EST. If you've been living under a rock lately and haven't heard about the Spore Creature Creator, we forgive you. However, if you actually just live under a rock and look like something spawned from the Creature Creator, and have been pouting because you have an Interl Mac Mini or an older MacBook with Intel's GMA 950 integrated graphics, then turn that frown upside down.

The Unofficial Apple Weblog will let you know how to fool the program into thinking you're sporting a different graphics chip, and you'll be able to play God on your precious piece of outdated, but still loved, hardware. Just don't blame us if your now hacked machine becomes sentient and starts spawning.
Force your older Mac to evolve and run Spore Creature Creator originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 17 Jun 2008 20:10:00 EST. Apple's new MacBook Air laptop is thin, sleek, very stylish, but we also imagine very easily lost in a pile of stacked paper. Its gaming capabilities? On par with the MacBook, thanks to the same graphics processor (Intel GMA X3100 with 144MB DDR2 SDRAM). We just hope it'll play Spore. Paul Bourke outfitted one to create an immersive environment that he could steer through with a Wii remote. Using a data projector and specialized software on his MacBook Pro, he was able to display navigable movies on the hollow half-sphere.

Considering its accelerometers and bluetooth functionality, the remote seems perfect as a low-cost interface device for this kind of setup, but Paul found that though the controller is usable, it isn't as accurate as he'd like. We hope that doesn't stop someone from creating a fully-developed astronomy simulation out of this! MacBook and Mini owners with integrated graphics won't have to worry about the game's performance, either. According to lead programmer Brad Oliver, Aspyr's goal is to make sure Empire plays well on ALL Macs. That is, until the expansion pack is ported and Tyber Zann assumes control of your hard disk.

See also:
While this isn't an issue for the MacBook and Mini product lines (both use the dreaded integrated graphics solution), the iMacs and MacBook Pros currently use the ATI Radeon X1600, while the Power Mac G5s ship with an Nvidia GeForce 6600.

Should Intel sever its ties with ATI, where would this leave the Intel Macs, including the forthcoming Mac Pros (rumored to be switching back to ATI)? Over the past year, it seems Mac gamers have been in an endless state of confusion with the CPU transition, Rosetta and Universal binary technologies, the introduction of Boot Camp, and now a potential GPU change.

What are your thoughts on the future of Mac gaming? Should Apple continue offering solutions from both graphics providers, and are Jobs and Co. doing enough to promote the Mac as a gaming platform?
Apple, ATI, and the future of Mac gaming originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 26 Jul 2006 15:35:00 EST. Sure, it'll run some of your older games swimmingly; F.E.A.R. 2 with 4x FSAA, eh, notsomuch. So, like Nintendo's zagging Wii controller, why not bypass the hobbled graphics system and exploit what the MacBook can offer: namely, an accelerometer.

Installed to detect if the computer's falling and park the hard drive accordingly, this clever gamer used ams2hid coupled with Neverball to make the modern-day equivalent of the wooden labyrinth. If I'm wrong, I will let the entire Joystiq staff and our top 5 contributors punch me in the gut. There is an article from CNET that came out yesterday (bearing a striking similarity to an O'Reilly blog post from February) that has given Nintendo and Apple fanatics a heart attack, but that article has no basis of a fact and is pure <strike>excrement</strike> speculation. The article extrapolates from a rumored Apple games division that the company may buy Nintendo. Let's look at their points:

Similar corporate philosophies / design styles: "the DS Lite looks practically looks like [Apple designer] Jonathan Ive built it." So do a countless number of iPod knockoffs, but we don't think Apple will be buying those companies anytime soon. Size aside, even Microsoft's Xbox 360 appears inspired by Apple's sleek design philosophies, but it'd be a cold day in Hell if those two companies ever joined forces.

"Cisco was rumoured to be looking at a purchase of Nintendo earlier in the year:" That would be a good support, except that the Cisco-Nintendo rumor spawned from another CNET article and was merely speculation by the author, with no factual basis (GameSpot denounced this rumor long ago).

Now, let us take a look at why Nintendo would never sell.
Continue reading Nintendo-Apple merger? Previously we've summarized the disadvantages of integrated graphics and we've moaned about the poor graphics performance of Apple's line-up in an attempt to force someone at Apple to listen, but it was all in vain.

Apple's supposed "gaming solution" (Windows) is hardly a solution now that Apple's consumer line-up (MacBook, Mac mini) doesn't have a dedicated graphics card, the prosumer line-up (MacBook Pro, iMac) features a low- to mid-range mobile chip and the remaining top-of-the-range machine (PowerMac) is stuck with PowerPC processors, crappy default GPUs (GeForce 6600s, yuck!) and a largely unobtainable price.

If Apple one days wakes up and realizes that there are a load of potential gaming switchers sitting on the fence it would either: tell, no, force Intel to make some integrated chips that aren't "virtually unplayable for anybody that cares about gaming" or provide the option of dedicated graphics cards for gamers, even if it costs us more.
More integrated graphics from Apple originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 16 May 2006 12:00:00 EST.
