The result turns out to be pretty efficient in its own way.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/11/custom-arcade-cabinet-puts-games-projectors-inside-a-work-of-ar/">Custom arcade cabinet puts games, projectors inside a work of art</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 11 Feb 2013 14:00:00 EST. The app even supports the <a href="http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/retro-gaming/e762/">iCade</a> controller, so iPad owners don't have to use the miserable-looking touch controls.<br />
<br />
Oh, by the way: please only use legally acquired ROMs with this program.<br />
<br />
Apple has taken a dim view of emulators in the past, but seems to have calmed down in that regard, allowing programs like the <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/turbografx-16-gamebox/id406585960?mt=8">Turbografx-16 GameBox</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/10/iphone-commodore-64-emulator-back-on-the-app-store/">C64</a>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/final-fight-at-capcom-arcade">Capcom Arcade</a> to live on the App Store. Still, just to be safe, we suggest grabbing this <em>nowish </em>if you want it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/22/free-mame-client-appears-on-ios/">Free MAME client appears on iOS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 22 Dec 2011 17:00:00 EST. Finally, a console you wouldn't want to hide inside a cabinet under your TV. <a href="http://www.lovehulten.com/">Love Hulten's</a> R-Kaid-6 is a beautiful custom-made wooden console that sort of resembles an Octorok.<br />
<br />
Unlike those weak Zelda enemies (as far as we know!) the R-Kaid-6 is built for MAME, with the Maximus Arcade interface installed, two custom-built joysticks that fit into a recess at the top when not in use, and a glowing red light at the front.<br />
<br />
It's highly unlikely you'll be able to get one of these for your home. While Hulten's website notes that some works are for sale, there's no indication as to whether this is one of them, and it's not exactly <em>mass-produced </em>anyway.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/14/r-kaid-6-console-is-impossibly-classy/">R-Kaid 6 console is impossibly classy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 14 Dec 2011 20:15:00 EST. X-Arcade has announced that "in celebration of its hometown Pittsburgh Penguins recent Stanley Cup Victory," it is offering a version of its X-Arcade Mame Cabinet for <a href="http://www.xgaming.com/htm/arcade-machine.shtml">$799</a>, down from its usual $999. That's a <em>great deal</em> (relative to the normal cost)!<br /><br />The cabinet includes a <a href="http://www.xgaming.com/tankstick-arcade-game.shtml">2-player X-Arcade stick</a>, though if you're crazy enough to buy this kind of stuff, you'll probably want to swap out your own Sanwa sticks and buttons. You'll need to provide your own game system or PC, your own monitor (or add one for $425), and your own speakers, unless you use a TV with speakers. Of course, with your <a href="http://fryrush.ytmnd.com/">all-Rush mixtape</a>, you won't even <em>need</em> arcade audio.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://arcade-junkies.com/2009/06/x-arcade-mame-cabinet-only-79995/">Arcade Junkies</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/your-decision-to-buy-a-home-arcade-cabinet-just-got-slightly-les/">Your decision to buy a home arcade cabinet just got slightly less irresponsible</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 24 Jun 2009 15:03:00 EST. Most of us have probably dabbled around with a Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator before, but have you ever crammed one into a TARDIS? Those things are supposed to be bigger on the inside than the outside. Anyhow, one man decided that having a dedicated stand-up gaming cabinet wasn't enough, so he built this pillar of geek awesomeness.<br /><br />Check out the two different sections, one on the building of the iconic <a href="http://www.asciimation.co.nz/tardis/">blue Police Box</a>, and the other on the <a href="http://www.asciimation.co.nz/tardis/page2.html#Introduction">console</a>. He even had the 7th doctor, Sylvester McCoy, autograph the thing. Is it still a sin to covet thy neighbor's sci-fi gaming cabinet? If so, mark us down in the "sinner" category.<br /><br />[Thanks, Douglas!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/30/doctor-who-wants-to-time-warp-play-retro-games/">Doctor Who wants to time warp, play retro games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 30 Jul 2008 20:15:00 EST. We're not sure where "Build Your Own <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/MAME/">MAME</a> Cabinet" falls on your todo list but it's pretty damn high on ours. Sure, we've pushed it down and put it off over the years (why did we learn underwater yak-shearing?) but after watching this 5-part video series on that very topic put together by the crew at Systm our desire has been rekindled. It's like a geek rite-of-passage, where previously basement-bound nerds branch out, teach themselves something new, and apply that knowledge to build <em>the one thing</em> that will ensure they'll never leave the basement again <em>ever</em>. Now, if you'll excuse us ...<br /><br />[Thanks, <a href="http://www.gameaddicthotline.com/">Luke</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/27/how-to-build-a-mame-cabinet-a-video-in-5-parts/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>How-To: Build a MAME cabinet, a video in 5 parts</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/27/how-to-build-a-mame-cabinet-a-video-in-5-parts/">How-To: Build a MAME cabinet, a video in 5 parts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 27 Dec 2007 04:31:00 EST. If you told us that device would also be able to replicate the games of hundreds of upright arcade cabinets, we might very well have exploded with anticipation.<br /><br />So far, the efforts to <a href="http://code.google.com/p/iphone-sdl-mame/">port</a> the ubiquitous <a href="http://mamedev.org/">Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator</a> to the iPhone have had pretty limited results -- anything more complex than <em>Pac-Man</em> or <em>Q*Bert</em> reportedly runs into some hefty performance problems. Still, we can't help but imagine the possibilities that will come with some more development time. After all, just look at how far we've come in the past twenty years.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gaming.engadget.com/2007/08/21/iphone-mame-project-gets-off-the-ground-performance-doesnt/">Engadget</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/22/limited-mame-ported-to-iphone/">Limited MAME ported to iPhone</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 Aug 2007 17:58:00 EST. This peanut-butter-in-chocolate match makes it suited to all kinds of emulated games, from <em>Golden Tee </em>and <em>Marble Madness</em> to <em>Pac-Man</em> and <em>Street Fighter</em>. The name of this controller? The <em>Tankstick</em>.<br /><br />We were with you, but "Tankstick?" Shouldn't that be reserved for a controller modeled after, say, a tank? "Tankstick" makes us think of that scene where Indiana Jones hangs perilously from the tank's side-turret, while the maniacal driver steers with exaggerated, stair-climber arm movements. That's a tank-stick, fit for toning arms while crushing the leading archeologist. At least we coud use the Tankstick to play that <em>Indy</em> game where you whip open the kids' cages and ride the mine carts to sweet freedom.<br /><br />But we digress.<br /><br />At $200 -- or $10/pound -- you'll have to play a lot of MAME or GameTap to justify buying the Tankstick. But, like the other X-Arcade controllers, you can get adapters ($20 each) to plug into nearly any console. Alternatively, tell your parents/spouse/children that you need to buy 15 pounds of cheese at once, and later claim it melted on the drive home.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/21/x-arcade-launches-tankstick-tanks-call-comparison-a-little-muc/">X-Arcade launches Tankstick, tanks call comparison "a little much"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 Sep 2006 20:15:00 EST. The
emulator--a very much unsupported <a href="http://ipodlinux.org/Ipodmame">emulator for iPod linux</a>--allows you to
play such legendary games as<em> Pac-Man</em> on a range of iPods. <br /><br />We assume that the emulator will play
other MAME games (no telling how well), but since the only iPod available for us to test is a chunky 3G iPod, we can't
test this theory. In the meantime, check out Scott's nano MAME cabinet pictured on the right.
