Even with all the gameplay footage sequestered inside a tiny window in the middle of the video, the game's cute character designs and striking color scheme come through.<br />
<br />
<em>4 Heroes of Light </em>replaces the traditional magic points -- and even attacks -- with a strategy RPG-style "Action Point system" in which every gameplay action subtracts from a gradually replenishing stock of action points. No longer are spells and other special attacks nested within menus: each character has a limited set of actions that can be assigned to the touch screen. You'll be able to try the streamlined <em>Final Fantasy </em>on October 5.<br />

I don't think I've ever played a jauntier game in my life, one that's so upbeat about the abstract notion of <em>adventure</em>. This enthusiasm for getting out and seeing the (fake) world is aided by a simplistic, familiar RPG gameplay system that keeps the mechanics of the game out of the way of your adventurin'. If <em>Dragon Quest</em> were set in a fake version of early 20th century Earth, it would be <em>Nostalgia</em>.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/nostalgia-10-16-09/">Nostalgia (10/16/09)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/nostalgia-10-16-09/#2371295"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/nostalgia101619_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/nostalgia-10-16-09/#2371294"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/nostalgia101613_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/nostalgia-10-16-09/#2371293"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/nostalgia101618_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/nostalgia-10-16-09/#2371292"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/nostalgia101617_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/nostalgia-10-16-09/#2371291"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/nostalgia101615_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/16/hands-on-nostalgia-ds/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hands-on: Nostalgia (DS)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/16/hands-on-nostalgia-ds/">Hands-on: Nostalgia (DS)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 16 Oct 2009 19:00:00 EST. The Matrix Software-developed RPG will be out October 29, at a Square Enix Tax-laden price of &yen;5,980 ($62) -- the same price at which <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/dragon-quest-ix"><em>Dragon Quest IX</em></a> launched.<br /><br />Speaking of <em>Dragon Quest IX</em>, this new game seems pretty well targeted at the <em>Dragon Quest</em> audience. We doubt it's a coincidence that Square Enix is releasing a streamlined, multiplayer version of its <em>other</em> major RPG franchise on DS three months after the release of <em>DQIX</em>. Check out some lovely new screens at <a href="http://game.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/20090730_305937.html">GAME Watch</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/30/final-fantasy-gaiden-out-in-japan-this-october/">Final Fantasy Gaiden out in Japan this October</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 30 Jul 2009 19:00:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.square-enix.co.jp/hikarino4sensi/">site</a> offers a bit more detail about the game than we knew -- most importantly, it confirms that the <em>Four Warriors of Light</em>, described as a "newly retold classic," is designed for play by up to four people.<br /><br />Like the last couple of <em>Final Fantasy</em> remakes on DS, <em>Four Warriors of Light</em> is being developed by Matrix Software. It features a new implementation of the standard <em>Final Fantasy</em> "job system," called the Crown System, which lets players switch jobs whenever desired. That sounds like the Dress Sphere system from the maligned <em>Final Fantasy X-2.</em><br /><br />A statement from producer Tomoya Asano on the site, as translated by <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2009/07/06/four_warriors_of_light_site/">Andriasang</a>, indicates the team's hope to deliver a game with "t<span>he charms of the classic RPG era before RPGs became JRPGs."</span><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/06/final-fantasy-gaiden-is-classic-role-playing-for-four/">Final Fantasy Gaiden is classic role-playing for four</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 06 Jul 2009 11:45:00 EST. The remake is getting the same kind of treatment from Square that any major DS RPG would -- by which we mean Square is charging a lot for it and releasing an even <em>more</em> expensive limited edition.<br /><br />Though the company has yet to reveal the design, a limited-edition <em>SaGa </em>20th Anniversary DSi system will be available on the game's release date, for 24,880 yen ($261). Matrix Software's intriguing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/09/more-information-for-your-avalon-code-logbook/"><em>Avalon Code</em></a> may be in limbo at the moment -- already out in Japan, and not scheduled for release in English until <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/11/e308-xseed-localizing-game-center-cx-ds-game-populous-ds/">next year</a> -- but that doesn't mean we're not keeping an eye on the ARPG. You may not be wielding your own special book for a while yet, but you can certainly watch someone else do it. In Japanese. And admire their elaborate costumes while you're at it.<br /><br />

<br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rising-star-games">Rising Star Games</a> just unfurled an official list of Marvelous games that it plans to localize for Europe, including <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/e308-luminous-arc-2-screens-add-a-dose-of-hilarity/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Luminous Arc 2</span></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/e308-from-mop-tops-to-monsters-avalon-code-looks-the-part/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Avalon Code</span></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/07/rune-factory-2-preorder-bonus-is-nuts/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Rune Factory 2</span></a>, and a fourth game that is yet to be announced for North America: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/07/smuggling-new-steal-princess-screens/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Steal Princess</span></a>. <br />This week's installment of Promotional Consideration comes with an excellent bonus -- a Circuit City deal for the <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ffiv">Final Fantasy IV</a> remake, which ships to stores next week. The electronics retailer is offering a $10 gift card with any purchase of the 3D RPG, on- and offline. Factor in free-shipping for orders totaling over $24, and this makes up for "the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/square-enix">Square Enix</a> tax," that extra $10 the publisher often adds to its DS games.<br /><br />Now that <span style="font-style: italic;">we've</span> done our part to sell the game to you, let's look at how Square Enix has been <span style="font-style: italic;">pushing Final Fantasy IV</span>. <br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/23/promotional-consideration-hataraku-chocobo/" /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/20/promotional-consideration-circuit-city-savings-with-cecil/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Promotional Consideration: Circuit City savings with Cecil</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/20/promotional-consideration-circuit-city-savings-with-cecil/">Promotional Consideration: Circuit City savings with Cecil</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 20 Jul 2008 21:30:00 EST. Matrix Software has already demonstrated its mastery of the DS hardware through its remakes of <em>Final Fantasy III</em> and the soon-to-be-released <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/final-fantasy-iv-1/910614/"><em>Final Fantasy IV</em></a>; and if the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/avalon-code/924077/">latest dozen screenshots</a> are anything to go by, <em>Avalon Code</em> and its mop-topped hero can stand proud next to either of those. If we're <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/13/olds-rumors-once-again-take-to-the-skies/">(maybe)</a> not getting a <em>Skies of Arcadia</em> sequel, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/02/famitsu-reveals-new-tecmo-title-wind-of-nostalgia/"><em>Wind of Nostalgia</em></a> sounds like the next best thing. In fact, it sounds like the <em>same</em> thing, only instead of air pirates, you're ... Londoners. Even with that not-as-cool difference, the gameplay of this RPG includes both dungeons and air battles, just like <em>Skies</em>. Interestingly, though, the setting for <em>Wind</em> is in the 19th century -- you don't usually associate the 1800s and air ships together, not that we're complaining.<br /><br />IGN pointed out another interesting detail that has us salivating over this new IP. Not only is Matrix (think the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/13/metareview-final-fantasy-iii/"><em>Final Fantasy III</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/02/comparing-the-old-and-the-new-final-fantasy-iv/"><em>IV</em></a> DS remakes) working on the project, as we knew, but also the producer is Keisuke Kikuchi of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/26/tgs07-wii-captures-fatal-frame/"><em>Fatal Frame</em></a> fame. asdlfjasdlkjfa -- oh excuse us there, we were just wiping drool off the keyboard.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/03/wind-of-nostalgia-keeps-sounding-better-and-better/">Wind of Nostalgia keeps sounding better and better</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 03 Jul 2008 20:00:00 EST. Forget looking ahead to E3 -- today is the name for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/02/a-hearty-addition-to-the-tales-series/">new</a> DS game <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/02/chrono-trigger-ds-for-real/">announcements</a>. Despite their current issues, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/20/tecmo-fires-back-says-details-of-lawsuit-are-inaccurate/">Tecmo</a> is still kicking around, and is set to release <em>Wind of Nostalgia</em>, an action game from developer Matrix Software. Matrix has handled Square Enix's <a href="http://dsfanboy.com/tag/ffiii"><em>Final Fantasy III</em></a> and <a href="http://dsfanboy.com/tag/ffiv"><em>IV</em></a> for the DS, and the similarity is obvious in the snippets revealed on the one-page announcement in <em>Famitsu</em>. <br /><em><br />Wind of Nostalgia</em> is scheduled for a Japanese release this year. Also? Looks like it will feature some pretty spiffy airships. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/16/square-enix-members-can-play-exclusive-final-fantasy-iv-card-gam/">Square Enix Membership</a> has its benefits. The company has made a web form available through which anyone with a Square Enix Members account (it's free) can submit questions to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/square-enix-fulfills-your-ffiv-screenshot-fantasy/"><em>Final Fantasy IV</em></a> team. According to the site's blog, "All of the questions will be forwarded to the team, but only a few will be answered." <br /><br />If you're curious about changes made to the <em>Final Fantasy IV</em> story or gameplay for the remake, or about the development of a DS game in general, this is a good opportunity! Just try not to submit five thousand questions (or one, even) about a <em>Final Fantasy VII</em> remake. They know.<br /><br />
<br />[Via <a href="http://member.square-enix.com/na/blog/2008/06/final-fantasy-iv-fanpowered-qa.php">Square Enix Members Blog</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/01/bother-the-final-fantasy-iv-team/">Bother the Final Fantasy IV team</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Jul 2008 12:30:00 EST. Sob.<br /><br />Part of a recent financial report from the publisher contained forecasts for forthcoming releases, as spotted by a keen-eyed <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2008/06/18/is-square-enix-localizing-valkyrie-profile-ds/#comment-478506">Siliconera commenter</a> and posted on NeoGAF. The estimations for <em>Avalon Code</em>'s were notable, as they included figures for the U.S. and Europe, which in turn tells us we'll be getting the diary-keepin' ARPG here in the west <em>at some point</em> before March 2009.<br /><br />Alas, we'd only just finished chest-bumping one another and shouting stuff like "HELL YEAH" when our excitement was tempered by the realization that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/04/luminous-arc-2-loves-big-butts-and-it-cannot-lie/"><em>Luminous Arc 2</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/19/steal-a-glimpse-at-steal-princess-commercial-and-art/"><em>Steal Princess</em></a> <em>didn't</em> have figures for the U.S. or Europe. This (probably) means that those games <em>won't</em> be localized this financial year (despite our hopes for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/24/were-willing-for-localization-on-luminous-arc-2-will/">former</a>). That's not to say they'll never make the trip across, of course, but for now it's one in, and two out.<br /><br />
<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=311961">NeoGAF</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/19/avalon-code-heading-west-steal-princess-luminous-arc-staying-p/">Avalon Code heading west, Steal Princess, Luminous Arc staying put</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Jun 2008 08:45:00 EST. In addition, you can use items to add elemental attributes to those weapons, increasing their effectiveness against certain types of monsters. <br /><br />We're sure you'll be able to identify monsters' elemental weaknesses on sight, both from <em>having played an RPG before</em> or from possessing a modicum of common sense (if there are ice monsters, for example, they would obviously be weak against <strike>Cap'n Crunch</strike> fire), but just in case they aren't obvious, that information will be among the data gathered when you attack the enemy with your book.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/09/more-information-for-your-avalon-code-logbook/">More information for your Avalon Code logbook</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 09 Jun 2008 10:15:00 EST. Well, <em>above</em> here. Up there, in the video part. Turn your speakers on. The latest trailer, focusing on the story of (non-Batman) dark knight Cecil, features fully-voiced cutscenes, in English.<br /><br />Square Enix may like to charge more for their DS games, but at least they are willing to sink some money into the the development of the things. Here, we can see a player switching out characters in the middle of this hobgoblin battle.<br /><br />Interestingly, data about the hobgoblin doesn't appear in the book until the hero has pulled off a combo attack against the creature. It appears that the basic attacks still caused damage, but that there's some kind of prerequisite for obtaining monster information.<br /><br />We're pretty sure the <em>actual game</em> will have sound, by the way.<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/27/filling-your-diary-in-avalon-code/">Filling your diary in Avalon Code</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 27 May 2008 11:45:00 EST. The routine: announce a game in <em>Famitsu</em>, release a bare official site for the title several days later with artwork and a few shots, update the site sporadically for the next several months until the game's release, launch, and move on.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/marvelous">Marvelous Interactive</a> has kicked off the second stage of its operations, putting an <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/07/final-fantasy-remake-developers-reveal-new-original-arpg-avalon/">Avalon Code</a></em> page online just days after debuting the ARPG in this week's issue of <em>Famitsu</em>. You won't find any video or downloadable items there yet, but you can preview a dozen images to check on what developer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/matrix-software/">Matrix Software</a> is preparing for the game's 2008 release.<br /><br />The screenshots don't look bad -- they're about on par with what we've seen in Namco's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tales">Tales</a></em> titles on the DS and the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/final-fantasy">Final Fantasy III/IV</a></em> DS remakes, the latter examples being titles Matrix had its hand in. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrix_Software">Matrix Software</a> has been in the press most recently for their work on the remakes of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/28/final-fantasy-iii-settles-at-19-99/"><em>Final Fantasies III</em></a> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/24/ffiv-announced-for-europe-screenshots-released/">IV</a>.</em> Before that, they had their own original action RPG, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alundra"><em>Alundra</em></a>, which was released in the U.S. on the PlayStation by the decadent <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Working_Designs">Working Designs</a>.<br /><br /> Their latest project is another original work, this time for Marvelous: an action RPG called <em>Avalon Code.</em> From what we can see in the scan, it has impressive 3D action on the top screen, with an art style reminiscent of <em>Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles</em>. The bottom screen appears as a book, and shows information about onscreen monsters, as well as your inventory. New details should show up for this game by the end of the week; until then, squint away in wonder!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/07/final-fantasy-remake-developers-reveal-new-original-arpg-avalon/">Final Fantasy remake developers reveal new original ARPG: Avalon Code</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 07 May 2008 17:00:00 EST. Square Enix, we'd like to introduce you to our good friends at <a href="http://dsfanboy.com/tag/atlus">Atlus</a>. When they announce a game, we get dozens of screenshots. Heck, when it comes to Atlus games, we get dozens of screenshots just because it's Tuesday or the sun is shining, and we <span style="font-style: italic;">like</span> it. You guys formally date <span style="font-style: italic;">Final Fantasy IV</span>, one of the most anticipated DS titles this year ... and we get three English screenshots, and one of 'em <em>doesn't even have any English</em> (see above). <br /><br />And yet, in return, Square Enix will have all of our money <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/10/its-official-final-fantasy-iv-on-july-22/">this summer</a>, and sometimes, they don't even bother making <span style="font-style: italic;">new games</span>. It almost doesn't seem fair. While we consider making a few protest posters, you can check out the screens in the gallery below.<br /><br />p.s. Beef aside, we love you anyway. Kisses!<br /><br />
<br />[Via press release]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/11/a-tiny-peek-at-final-fantasy-iv/">A tiny peek at Final Fantasy IV</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 11 Apr 2008 11:15:00 EST. Now that we have an official <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/08/final-fantasy-iv-coming-in-july/">release date</a> for <em>Final Fantasy IV</em>, we're looking at:<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>The World Ends With You</em> this month</li>
    <li><em>Space Invaders Extreme</em> and <em>Arkanoid DS</em> in June</li>
    <li><em>Final Fantasy Tactics A2</em> in June</li>
    <li><em>Final Fantasy IV</em> July 22<br /></li>
</ul>
And that's just a sprinkling of what's to come. There's so much else to consider, from <em>Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days</em> to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/13/valkyrie-profile-game-in-the-works-for-ds/"><em>Valkyrie Profile: The Accused One</em></a>, and maybe even <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/06/rumor-itadaki-street-coming-to-north-america-next-year/"><em>Itadaki Street</em></a>. And to think, some people are convinced that third parties have a tough time on Nintendo systems. Not so with Square Enix on the DS, that's for sure.<br /><br />
<br />[Via press release]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/10/its-official-final-fantasy-iv-on-july-22/">It's official: Final Fantasy IV on July 22</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 Apr 2008 13:30:00 EST. Did you miss the date for <em>Final Fantasy IV</em> in the last issue of Nintendo Power? <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/31/final-fantasy-iv-on-the-way-to-the-u-s/">We did</a>, and so did many others; we were all too busy reading the incredible ten page spread on the game to look at the chart on page 18. Now RPGFan is also reporting that the game will ship this July, so it should be only a matter of time before Square Enix confirms the release. At this rate, we can expect <em>Final Fantasy VI</em> (also known as the one we're waiting for on the DS) in July of 2009. Can we get on that, guys? Not that we aren't excited about <em>Final Fantasy IV</em> (we are!), we're just ... uh ... <em>looking ahead</em>. <br /><br />
<br />[Via <a href="http://www.gemaga.com/2008/04/07/final-fantasy-iv-ds-coming-to-us-shores-in-july">Gemaga</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/08/final-fantasy-iv-coming-in-july/">Final Fantasy IV coming in July</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Apr 2008 12:00:00 EST. A new interview with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/finalfantasyiv/"><em>Final Fantasy IV</em></a> director Takashi Tokita in the latest Nintendo Power seems to point to the game's recent DS remake being localized for North American audiences. Oh sure, he doesn't come right out and confirm the localization -- where's the drama in that? -- but given that the article comes peppered with English language screens and the game itself is featured on the cover, we're certainly leaning towards believing that the RPG will soon be getting some domestic love.<br /><br />Tokita also toys with our emotions, speaking to the possibility of a remake of SNES RPG classic <em>Chrono Trigger</em> provided "the demand is great enough." Though like coming down hard off a caffeine high, he sends us crashing back down to earth by adding that he really wants to "create new titles and not just series installments and remakes." <br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/promotionalconsideration">Promotional Consideration</a> is a weekly feature about the Nintendo DS advertisements you usually flip past, change the channel on, or just tune out.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/square-enix">Square Enix</a> has been pushing <span style="font-style: italic;">Final Fantasy IV</span> hard this week in Japan, advertising the 3D remake with five different <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/19/final-fantasy-iv-ads-remind-us-cg-is-great/">CG-filled commercials</a>. We were curious to compare these spots with how the RPG was marketed when it first appeared on the Super Famicom, all the way back in 1991, and the two approaches couldn't be any more at odds!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/23/promotional-consideration-hataraku-chocobo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Promotional Consideration: Hataraku Chocobo</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/23/promotional-consideration-hataraku-chocobo/">Promotional Consideration: Hataraku Chocobo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 23 Dec 2007 20:00:00 EST. Fortunately, though, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/22/its-a-whole-new-world-for-final-fantasy-iv/"><em>Final Fantasy IV</em></a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/age-of-remakes/">remake </a>for the DS will have a jukebox component, hosted by none other then everyone's favorite spoony bard.<br /><br />Once you make Edward play your tune of choice, you can close up your DS, listen, and relax. If all of our DS games let us do this, we probably wouldn't have any need for our iPods anymore (okay, that's a lie).<br /><br />It's important to note, however, that the soundtrack for the DS version is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/13/final-fantasy-iv-vocalist-wanted/">slightly different</a> from that of the original game because of sound issues on the handheld. Regardless, we find this to be a nice little feature for the game.<br /><br />[via <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2007/11/06/final-fantasy-iv-soundtrack-sort-of-packed-with-final-fantasy-iv-ds/">Siliconera</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/06/final-fantasy-iv-comes-with-nice-soundtrack-treat/">Final Fantasy IV comes with nice soundtrack treat</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 06 Nov 2007 18:40:00 EST. Unlike its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/26/square-enix-in-your-pocket-psp-edition/">PSP counterpart</a>, the Nintendo DS has been no stranger to North American <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/SquareEnix/">Square Enix</a> releases. <em>Chocobo Tales, Final Fantasy III, Children of Mana </em>and <em>Dragon Quest Rocket Slime </em>have all graced their presence on Western shores. And Square Enix is far from done supporting Nintendo's money-printer.<br /><br />Of the eight titles, we've got 4 <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/FinalFantasy/" style="font-style: italic;">Final Fantasy</a><span style="font-style: italic;"> </span>games, 3 strategy games, 2 remakes, and one surefire Japanese phenomenon by way of <span style="font-style: italic;">Dragon Quest IX</span>. When <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/FinalFantasy/">Final Fantasy III</a></em> upgraded to three dimensions for the DS, side-by-side <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2005/10/24/ffiii-ds-vs-ffiii-nes/">comparison shots</a> popped up online to show the disparity between the new version and the original. Recently-<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/09/final-fantasy-iv-getting-the-3d-treatment/">announced</a> <em>FFIV</em> remake, now it's your turn.<br /><br />NeoGAF forum poster Speedpop <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6343111&amp;postcount=505">produced</a> four side-by-side shots of the new <em>FFIV</em> alongside its predecessor. Two of the four images are currently unavailable due to bandwidth issues (damn you, Image Shack!), so we've decided to host the collection below. The 16-year difference shows, and it looks like Square Enix is doing quite a bit to upgrade the title.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/final-fantasy-4/">Final Fantasy 4</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/final-fantasy-4/#238482"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/ffiv-comp-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/final-fantasy-4/#238480"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/ffiv-comp-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/final-fantasy-4/#238479"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/ffiv-comp-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/final-fantasy-4/#238449"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/ffiv-comp-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamebrink.com/news/954-Final_Fantasy_IV_Remake_Comparison_Shots.html">GameBrink</a>; thanks, J]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/10/final-fantasy-iv-then-and-now/">Final Fantasy IV, then and now</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 May 2007 13:25:00 EST. Today, Japanese magazine <span style="font-style: italic;">Shonen Jump</span> confirmed the speculation with <a href="http://www.jeux-france.com/news20124_final-fantasy-iv-sur-nintendo-ds.html">a few grainy images</a>. The game will use the same engine as the <em>FFIII</em> remake with at least one notable addition: skin-tight leather outfits.<br /><br />The inevitable re-hashing of yet another <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/finalfantasy"><em>Final Fantasy</em> game</a> by Square Enix. We would complain, but the thought of <em>FF IV </em>in 3D sooths our inner demons. Gamers who missed the original release can enjoy modern 3D visuals, Square Enix can make loads of cash while expending minimal resources, and veteran gamers can re-visit an old game in an entirely new way.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.dsfanboy.com/2007/05/09/first-look-at-final-fantasy-iv-3d-remake/">DS Fanboy</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/09/final-fantasy-iv-getting-the-3d-treatment/">Final Fantasy IV getting the 3D treatment on DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 May 2007 11:05:00 EST. While <em>FFIII</em> certainly has the brand edge, both titles look to boost the DS's credibility as a viable RPG platform. <em>Famitsu</em> recently published its reviews for the two games, suggesting that <em>FFIII</em> is slightly superior:<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Final Fantasy III </em>(Square Enix): 9/8/9/8 - 34/40*</li>
    <li><em>Rune Factory</em> (Marvelous Interactive): 8/9/7/9 - 33/40</li>
</ul>
Keep in mind that, back in March, <em>Children of Mana</em> scored even higher than <em>FFIII</em>, earning a 36/40, and will be released in the US on October 30. <em>FFIII</em> will land stateside in November (hopefully). <em>Rune Factory: Shin Bokujou Monogatari </em>has not been confirmed for release outside of Japan, but <em>Harvest Moon DS</em> is scheduled for September 12.<br />
<br />
*C3 News notes that <em>Famitsu's</em> score for the original <em>FFIII</em> (NES) was 35/40.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/10/final-fantasy-iii-and-rune-factory-go-head-to-head-in-japan/">Final Fantasy III &amp; Rune Factory go head-to-head in Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 Aug 2006 13:45:00 EST. The image suggests that <em>Final Fantasy III</em> (DS) will feature Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection support. See the tiny blue icon?<br />
<br />
Today, IGN <a href="http://ds.ign.com/articles/714/714043p1.html" target="_blank">confirmed with Square Enix</a> that <em>FFIII</em> would indeed be wi-fi enabled. Unfortunately the company representative added, "I can't reveal the details at this time." <em>Final Fantasy III</em> is scheduled for release on September 12.<br />

The trailer is low on the gameplay footage, yet features some sweet CG footage of chocobos running along a cliff complete with airship emerging from the clouds. Of the gameplay footage that is shown, some interspersed segments of exploration, dialogue segments, and battle footage make up the majority of it. Also, the site has some <a href="http://www.gamebrink.com/nintendo-ds/1418-Final_Fantasy_III-video-2.html">footage from E3</a> you can check out.<br />

The scans, which contain the requisite number of moogle and chocobo, showcase some of the game's tasty concept art for the classes of characters such as Red and Black Mage, along with what we can assume is information on the game, locked away behind doors that we are unable to penetrate due to our lack of ability to translate Japanese characters. Any bilingual readers want to take a crack at translating the article?</p>
<p>The scans also show some in-battle imagery throughout a variety of environments along with some samples of what exploration on the world map will look like. We're foaming at the mouth to see this at E3, so keep your eyes on DS Fanboy for more information as it develops.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/25/more-final-fantasy-iii-scans-delight/">More Final Fantasy III scans delight</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 25 Apr 2006 09:30:00 EST. Citing <em>Famitsu</em>, the usually reliable chaps say that Squeenix's upcoming and frighteningly gorgeous Final Fantasy remake will <a href="http://www.britishgaming.co.uk/?p=698">sport some sort of Wi-Fi gameplay</a>. Online, cooperative slaying of beasts and smashing of ancient evils? Yes please.<br />
<br />
Sticking to the topic of pointy-haired adventurers and magical princesses, Gamebrink has posted some <a href="http://www.gamebrink.com/viewitem.php?id=1418&amp;preview=135">new scans of <em>Final Fantasy III</em></a> in action. They're sure to evoke some nostalgia within you, along with the lingering desire to visit an optometrist. They're quite small and blurry. <br />
