It also reveals how industrial pollution can poison groundwater. What it doesn't show is the multi-million dollar lawsuit that follows.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/17/simcity-trailer-discusses-water-management-produces-a-civil-act/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>SimCity trailer discusses water management, produces a civil action</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/17/simcity-trailer-discusses-water-management-produces-a-civil-act/">SimCity trailer discusses water management, produces a civil action</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Apr 2012 13:00:00 EST. An absolutely unacceptable dearth of Katy Perry remained.<br /><br />Luckily, EA has rescued us from a life of insufficient simulated Katy Perry paraphernalia with the announcement of <em>The Sims 3 Katy Perry's Sweet Treats</em>, which lets you decorate your Sims' homes in the style of an imaginary "Candyfornia, complete with cupcake-themed guitars, candy playground equipment and delicious cotton candy trees."<br /><br />You'll be able to cover your Sims and their homes in virtual candy this June on PC and Mac. It's a good thing <em>The Sims 3 </em>doesn't connect to <em>SimAnt</em>.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-sims-3-katy-perry-s-sweet-treats/">The Sims 3 Katy Perry’s Sweet Treats</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-sims-3-katy-perry-s-sweet-treats/#4936785"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/ts3katyperryssweettreatsbike_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-sims-3-katy-perry-s-sweet-treats/#4936786"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/ts3katyperryssweettreatshangout_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-sims-3-katy-perry-s-sweet-treats/#4936787"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/ts3katyperryssweettreatsnewpoolvenue_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-sims-3-katy-perry-s-sweet-treats/#4936788"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/ts3katyperryssweettreatswaterslide_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/03/katy-perry-returns-to-the-sims-3/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Katy Perry returns to The Sims 3</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/03/katy-perry-returns-to-the-sims-3/">Katy Perry returns to The Sims 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Apr 2012 19:30:00 EST. He wants them to have a real bearing on the world. He wants them to be less the uncharismatic specks they've been in previous games.<br /><br />Each Sim has a set plan each day: They wake up and pay their rent -- surprisingly, it's only $1 -- and go to work. After work, if they have money, they spend it throughout the region. Spending money gives Sims more happiness, thus increasing their enjoyment of your city.<br /><br />Sims have their own bank accounts, and can potentially become homeless if they don't have any funds. If you don't have a place for Sims to earn money, they'll start loitering in parks, decreasing happiness and forcing them to move out of your city.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/simcity-3-28-12/">SimCity (3/28/12)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/simcity-3-28-12/#4922285"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/simcityconceptartcasino-1332894997_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/simcity-3-28-12/#4922286"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/simcitycityconcept-1332894998_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/simcity-3-28-12/#4922288"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/simcitycoalcitynight-1332895001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/simcity-3-28-12/#4922290"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/simcityconceptartcityhall-1332895003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/simcity-3-28-12/#4922291"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/simcityconceptartcrash-1332895005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/28/the-life-of-a-sim-in-simcity/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The life of a Sim in SimCity</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/28/the-life-of-a-sim-in-simcity/">The life of a Sim in SimCity</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 28 Mar 2012 14:30:00 EST. An EA representative confirmed with Joystiq that the title would be available for purchase on other digital distribution platforms, though a list of stores has yet to be finalized. SimCity is arriving sometime in 2013.<br /><br />Lead designer Stone Librande confirmed that <em>SimCity</em> would be an internet-dependent experience. Players will need to be online on Origin while playing, even if that wasn't the point of purchase. The always-on connection becomes necessary with the game's emphasis on multiplayer and regional impact, and the use of a global economy that all players can influence.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/simcity-3-28-12/">SimCity (3/28/12)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/simcity-3-28-12/#4922285"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/simcityconceptartcasino-1332894997_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/simcity-3-28-12/#4922286"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/simcitycityconcept-1332894998_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/simcity-3-28-12/#4922288"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/simcitycoalcitynight-1332895001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/simcity-3-28-12/#4922290"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/simcityconceptartcityhall-1332895003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/simcity-3-28-12/#4922291"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/simcityconceptartcrash-1332895005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/28/simcity-requires-internet-connection-to-play-will-be-sold-outsi/">SimCity requires internet connection to play, will be sold outside of Origin</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 28 Mar 2012 08:00:00 EST. Today, we've got a much clearer look at similar footage, directly from EA's Maxis studio.<br /><br />Like the GDC clips, this video isn't meant to be a trailer or show off the game's graphical prowess. Instead, it's intended as a way to articulate SimCity's backend GlassBox Engine and how it assists in powering next year's series reboot. Unfortunately, this video features approximately 100 percent less fire ravaged houses. This is only the first video in a promised "Insider's Look" series, so we're holding out hope for flaming houses in the next installment.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/20/take-a-second-first-look-at-simcitys-glassbox-engine-debug-g/">Take a (second) first look at SimCity's GlassBox engine, debug graphics and all</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 Mar 2012 09:00:00 EST. Specifically with regards to online play, the game will feature cloud saving which will work continuously in the background as you play online.<br /><br /><em>SimCity</em> was described as "built from the ground up to support online," which goes beyond the asychronus online play we heard about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/06/the-buck-stops-at-the-simulation-with-new-simcity/">at last night's event</a>. "Play anywhere" was mentioned, with the idea being that you could play the game across a variety of devices. We're thinking mobile as well as PC and (perhaps) console offerings, but the example given was accessing your games via web browser.<br /><br />Several videos were also shown off of the game in action, though heavily laced with debug graphics (read: placeholder, and not so attractive). Each of the four demonstrated different aspects of the game's building blocks and we'll hopefully have them up for you shortly. The internet here is ... not so fast.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/07/simcity-saves-heading-to-the-clouds-bringing-the-game-beyond-th/">SimCity saves heading to the clouds, bringing the game beyond the PC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 07 Mar 2012 18:30:00 EST. Speaking at an EA press conference in San Francisco tonight, Maxis Senior Vice President Lucy Bradshaw shared some of the high-level goals for the new <em>SimCity</em> game, coming to PC in 2013.<br /><br />Bradshaw recalled shipping the first city builder in 1989, and described the return of Maxis to the franchise proper with great enthusiasm. "It's been about ten years since we shipped the last, true SimCity by Maxis," she said. Despite that passage of time, the developer still seeks to impart inspiration in simulation. "The buck stops at the simulation," Bradshaw said.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/simcity/">SimCity</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/simcity/#4878669"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/simcityannouncementconceptartcasinocity_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/simcity/#4878670"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/simcityannouncementconceptartcrashscene_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/simcity/#4878671"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/simcitylogo_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/06/the-buck-stops-at-the-simulation-with-new-simcity/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>'The buck stops at the simulation' with new SimCity</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/06/the-buck-stops-at-the-simulation-with-new-simcity/">'The buck stops at the simulation' with new SimCity</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 06 Mar 2012 22:00:00 EST. It's coming to PC in 2013, and going back to Maxis.<br /><br />The official word follows a string of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/01/simcity-5-rumors-building/">leaked screens</a> and a prematurely outed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/03/rumor-leaked-pre-visualization-simcity-5-trailer-purports-2013/">trailer that seemed intended for GDC</a>. The game will run on the GlassBox engine, which EA plans to describe in more detail at tomorrow's "Inside the GlassBox" presentation at GDC. So far, we've confirmed that it'll have curvy roads!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/06/new-simcity/">New SimCity scraping sky on PC in 2013</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 06 Mar 2012 21:05:00 EST. Pre-visualization trailers like this serve as rendered storyboards, hence its distinct lack of <em>actual motion</em>, and are used by directors as a cinematic roadmap.<br /><br />It also gives us a glimpse of the game's roadmap, both literally and figuratively, by showcasing the layout of a simulated city and placing <em>SimCity 5</em>'s release date in 2013. It's worth noting that the number five is mysteriously lacking from the title's logo, which may indicate a series reboot, rather than a sequel, should this end up being legitimate.<br /><br />Thankfully, we'll only have to wait a couple of days to find out if this trailer is The Real Deal with Bill McNeal, as EA and Maxis' GDC event takes place this Tuesday.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/03/rumor-leaked-pre-visualization-simcity-5-trailer-purports-2013/">Rumor: Leaked pre-visualization SimCity 5 trailer purports 2013 launch window</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 03 Mar 2012 16:30:00 EST. Few E3 moments provided bone-chilling waves of creepiness quite like the announcement trailer for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-sims-social"><em>The Sims Social</em></a> during EA's press conference. Don't pay more for '<em>spore</em> -- at least that's Steam's motto of the day, as it puts the Maxis developer action-RPG hybrid <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/darkspore"><em>Darkspore</em></a> on sale for 40 percent off its normal asking price. From now through 4PM PST / 7PM EST on Thursday, June 16, the PC-only title is <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/99890/">going for $30</a>, down 20 bucks from the MSRP. Steam is also offering an eight-pack of the multiplayer-enabled game for $90, normally $150.<br />

Our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/03/darkspore-review/">review said</a> that <em>Darkspore</em> was <em>all right</em>, but had "a lot of room for improvement." Now at least one way to improve it has been addressed: <em>make it cheaper.</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/14/steam-darkspore-40-off-for-midweek-madness/">Steam: Darkspore 40% off for Midweek Madness</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Jun 2011 19:40:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/darkspore" style="font-style: italic; ">Darkspore</a> appears to be headed to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, courtesy of developer Naked Sky Entertainment (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/microbot"><em>Microbot</em></a>). Twitter-based internet detective <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/supererogatory/status/70149006617092096">Superannuation</a> spotted a reference to the port in level designer <a href="http://www.hobobot.net/Jordan.Patz_Resume.pdf">Jordan Patz' resume</a> (PDF link), which says he "worked with Maxis to modify <em>Darkspore</em> for release on Xbox/PS3."<br />

Though EA has never officially announced the title for anything other than PC/Mac, a recent interview on <a href="http://gamerant.com/maxis-darkspore-consoles-community-phil-67152/">GameRant</a> with Maxis executive producer Mike Perry indicated that the game could be ported to consoles if the community demanded it. It seems, however, that plans were already underway. When contacted, EA offered a "No comment," and we've yet to hear back from Patz or Naked Sky Entertainment.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/16/darkspore-heading-to-xbox-360-and-playstation-3-resume-indicate/">Darkspore heading to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, resume indicates</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 May 2011 13:00:00 EST. If <em>Diablo </em>and <em>Pokemon </em>had a baby with <em>Spore </em>as the midwife, you'd ... well, you'd probably be scarred for life if you looked directly at it. But you'd also end up with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/darkspore"><em>Darkspore</em></a>.<br />

This sci-fi themed hack-and-slash role-playing game puts you in the role of a Crogenitor, a near-extinct race of advanced beings once responsible for seeding the galaxy with engineered life. Long ago, a figure named The Destroyer experimented with an unstable form of genetic engineering called E-DNA. Using it, he created an army of powerful mutant creatures called Darkspore that went forth to conquer the known galaxy. Awakened from hypersleep, your role is to assemble a collection of heroes, modify them, and take it back.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/darkspore-gamescom-2010/">Darkspore (Gamescom 2010)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/darkspore-gamescom-2010/#3279308"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/darksporegamescom1bmpjpgcopy-1282247526_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/darkspore-gamescom-2010/#3279310"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/darksporegamescom2bmpjpgcopy-1282247529_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/darkspore-gamescom-2010/#3279311"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/darksporegamescom3bmpjpgcopy-1282247530_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/darkspore-gamescom-2010/#3279312"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/darksporegamescom4bmpjpgcopy-1282247530_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/darkspore-gamescom-2010/#3279313"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/darksporegamescom5bmpjpgcopy-1282247531_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/03/darkspore-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Darkspore review: Give it a hand</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/03/darkspore-review/">Darkspore review: Give it a hand</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 May 2011 20:20:00 EST. It's been far too long since you've played god with the genetic makeup of poor, defenseless cryptozoological monsters -- why not dip your toes into Maxis' dark, action-RPG followup to <em>Spore</em>, obviously titled <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/darkspore">Darkspore</a>?</em> The game recently entered open beta, allowing players to dungeon delve through the first few levels until the beta client goes kaput on April 22. The retail release is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/18/darkspore-delayed-until-april-26-open-beta-planned/">scheduled</a> to follow on April 26.<br />
<br />
You can download the beta client on our sister site <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2011/04/13/download-darkspore-open-beta-client/">Big Download</a>, but you might want to check out the minimum system requirements posted after the jump before you spend all of that precious bandwidth. It's the currency of the future, you know? The beta client for Maxis' <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/darkspore"><em>Darkspore</em></a> is now available on Steam -- you can click through <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/99890/">on the preorder page</a> to install and check it out. We liked the look of the game both in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/20/darkspore-preview/">the intial preview</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/05/darkspore-preview/">in our look at PvP</a>, so if the idea of taking some <em>Spore</em> creatures out for a <em>Diablo</em> walk appeals, go give it a shot. The beta features both four-player co-op and either 1v1 or 2v2 PvP as well.<br />
<br />
Steam is also offering a deal on preorder -- if you buy four copies of the game, you can get them all for the price of three. So if you've got three buddies who enjoy playing the beta with you, you can all get the final game for a nice discount when it hits.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/28/darkspore-goes-into-beta-on-steam-available-as-3-for-4-preorder/">Darkspore goes into beta on Steam, available as 3-for-4 preorder</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 21:00:00 EST. <em>Darkspore's</em> evolution toward retail maturation has been stunted, and the game won't crawl out of the development ooze now until April 26 in North America (and April 28 in Europe). Previously, its <em>birth</em> date <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/darkspore-spawning-march-29-new-hero-editor-trailer/">had been set</a> for March 29.<br />
<br />
Along with EA's delay announcement on the game's <a href="http://forums.darkspore.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&amp;t=2689">forums</a>, the publisher announced that an open beta for the edgier take on the <em>Spore</em> franchise would begin sometime in April. It would seem the company is still making sure all the mandibles and exoskeletons are reticulated properly for the game's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/03/darkspore-trailer-offers-a-glimpse-at-four-player-co-op/">four-player co-op</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/16/darkspore-dev-diary-sheds-light-on-squad-based-pvp/">squad based PvP</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/darkspore-spawning-march-29-new-hero-editor-trailer/">robust hero editor</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/18/darkspore-delayed-until-april-26-open-beta-planned/">Darkspore delayed until April 26; open beta planned</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 18 Mar 2011 14:50:00 EST. EA's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/darkspore">Darkspore</a> -</em> which takes all the cuddly out of <em>Spore</em> and replaces it with a massive dose of <em>Diablo -</em> will crawl out of the primordial development ooze at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Maxis/">Maxis</a> for a March 29 release date, as revealed at the end of the latest developer diary, which explores the game's hero editor.<br />
<br />
Pay close attention at 1:15 in the video to see what's flashing when discussing the region of the hero's body which represents "offense." Odd. We haven't thought about underwear as offensive since the time we saw a grown man wearing Dora the Explorer Underoos (it can't be unseen).<br />

Another <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/darkspore">DarkSpore</a></em> dev diary has been released, this time explaining how the game's PvP system works. We had a chance to look at the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/05/darkspore-preview/">unique squad-based PvP</a> earlier this year, but now you can see how it plays out in handy video form, without all the hassle of <em>reading words</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/16/darkspore-dev-diary-sheds-light-on-squad-based-pvp/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DarkSpore dev diary sheds light on squad-based PvP</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/16/darkspore-dev-diary-sheds-light-on-squad-based-pvp/">DarkSpore dev diary sheds light on squad-based PvP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 04:00:00 EST. Not only are friends great when you need bail money at 4 a.m. (don't ask), but they're also good for fighting monsters and stuff in <em>Darkspore.</em> At least, that's what we hear from people who actually have friends.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/03/darkspore-trailer-offers-a-glimpse-at-four-player-co-op/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Darkspore trailer offers a glimpse at four-player co-op</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/03/darkspore-trailer-offers-a-glimpse-at-four-player-co-op/">Darkspore trailer offers a glimpse at four-player co-op</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 03 Dec 2010 07:00:00 EST. This new <em>Darkspore</em> producer diary from Maxis is all about loot -- how to find it, get it, and then strap it on your oddly-shaped appendages. The catalysts and cash-out systems look particularly interesting, mixing up the ceaseless looting with an alluring meta-game.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/19/darkspore-producer-diary-loot/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Darkspore producer diary is downright looticrous</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/19/darkspore-producer-diary-loot/">Darkspore producer diary is downright looticrous</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 19 Nov 2010 10:45:00 EST. <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/darkspore"><em>Darkspore</em></a>'s been introduced to us as "<em>Spore</em> meets <em>Diablo</em>," and seeing it in action reinforces that early pitch -- the game has six abilities on a bar across the bottom, and health and mana bars on either side, while characters that appear as if they were generated in <em>Spore</em> hack and slash their way across the screen. But what EA really wants to do with <em>Darkspore</em>, says Michael Arsers, software engineer on the title, isn't just clone an action RPG with Will Wright's funny toys. They want to answer that question everyone had after <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/spore"><em>Spore</em></a> originally released.<br />
<br />
"A lot of the criticisms on <em>Spore</em>," he told me recently, "were that there were a lot of cool tools, but where's the game? And that's what we were trying to get at here." So you might be forgiven for thinking <em>Darkspore</em> is the product of some weird genetic mashup of game genres -- it basically was. "The team that started this production was a very core gamer, <em>WoW</em> arena/<em>DotA</em> kind of crowd, and so we really wanted to take the creatures from <em>Spore</em> and put them in a hardcore game," Arsers said. We've already heard a bit about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/20/darkspore-preview/">the singleplayer side of the title</a>, but no true hardcore game is complete without some player-versus-player (PvP) action, and so Arsers was excited to show off the PvP Arena mode that he and the team are working on.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/darkspore-pvp-11-3-10/">Darkspore PvP (11/3/10)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/darkspore-pvp-11-3-10/#3536215"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/11/wraith_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/darkspore-pvp-11-3-10/#3536216"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/11/titan_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/darkspore-pvp-11-3-10/#3536218"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/11/maldri_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/darkspore-pvp-11-3-10/#3536220"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/11/darksporepvp-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/darkspore-pvp-11-3-10/#3536222"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/11/darksporepvp-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/05/darkspore-preview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Darkspore PvPreview: Arms and legs thrashing</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/05/darkspore-preview/">Darkspore PvPreview: Arms and legs thrashing</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 05 Nov 2010 18:20:00 EST. Anxious to sample the <em>Warrior Within</em>-like change going on with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/darkspore"><em>Darkspore</em></a>? EA is now taking beta applications, where the lucky winners will get an early taste of the next installment in the fledgling <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/spore">Spore</a> </em>franchise. There's no word when the beta will launch, but all you have to do to get on the list is hit up <a href="http://darkspore.com/newsletter_home.php">this link</a> and drop in some details about yourself. <br />

If you're worried about the CIA or some other scary government agency getting hold of said personal details, we'd suggest adopting the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dale_Gribble#Rusty_Shackleford">Rusty Shackleford</a> approach, otherwise known as: <em>using a false alias</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/04/darkspore-now-accepting-beta-applications/">Darkspore now accepting beta applications</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 04 Nov 2010 02:00:00 EST. Wanna dodge the sun's harmful rays and get some gaming in within the air-conditioned comfort of your home? EA's been offering discounts on its PC lineup every weekend; a revolving door of its best and brightest for a pittance. It seems the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/26/bioware-lending-maxis-a-hand-darkspore-development/">assistance</a> which the RPG experts of BioWare are providing to Maxis on the development of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/darkspore"><em>Darkspore</em></a> isn't exactly all that thorough. EA recently <a href="http://www.destructoid.com/bioware-writer-helping-to-pen-darkspore-fiction-179892.phtml">explained to Destructoid</a> that BioWare's Malcolm Azania, part of the writing team for <em>Mass Effect 2</em> and its "Kasumi - Stolen Memory" DLC, is filling the role of lead writer for the genetically engineered action-RPG.<br />
<br />
So, it's not so much "help from BioWare" as much as it is "help from <em>one dude</em> from BioWare" -- still, considering the strength of the storytelling in BioWare's catalog of titles, it sounds like they picked the right <em>one dude</em> to bring on board.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/27/bioware-writer-taking-lead-on-creating-darkspores-story/">BioWare writer taking lead on creating Darkspore's story</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 27 Jul 2010 12:15:00 EST. We <em>suppose</em> the <em>Sims</em> franchise has a few elements in common with the role-playing genre -- after all, it's about character improvement and, more often than not, all of the characters are startlingly, impossibly attractive. Still, it seems Maxis is getting a helping hand on <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/darkspore">Darkspore</a> </em>development from a more experienced RPG developer -- <a href="http://comic-con.gamespot.com/story/6270903/darkspore-germinating-at-comic-con">according to Gamespot</a>, the studio's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/comic-con-2010">Comic-Con</a> panel revealed that fellow EA studio BioWare is helping out on the project.<br />
<br />
The capacity of this help is still unknown, but based on BioWare's strong roots in the genre, we strongly doubt they've been brought in to offer backrubs to weary programmers. We've contacted EA to find out more about this partnership, and to find out whether we can expect <em>Dark</em><em>spore</em> to contain any romance sub-plots leading to tastefully directed sex scenes.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> The scope of the studio's assistance seems to be limited to the hiring of BioWare writer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/27/bioware-writer-taking-lead-on-creating-darkspores-story/">Malcolm Azania</a> (<em>Mass Effect 2</em>, "Kasumi -- Stolen Memory") to fill the role of lead writer for <em>Darkspore</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/26/bioware-lending-maxis-a-hand-darkspore-development/">BioWare lending Maxis a hand on Darkspore development</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 26 Jul 2010 10:20:00 EST. Last week saw the release of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/DeathSpank"><em>DeathSpank</em></a>, a game I wasn't alone in likening to "<em>Monkey Island </em>meets <em>Diablo</em>." Presumably in an attempt to avoid missing the "meets <em>Diablo</em>" bus, Maxis is preparing to give the PC gaming world <em>Darkspore --</em> a.k.a. "<em>Spore </em>meets <em>Diablo</em>" -- in February 2011.<br />
<br />
It's a new <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/Spore">Spore</a> </em>game, albeit one focused on combat. It's described by publisher Electronic Arts as a "sci-fi action-RPG," but you might describe it as "not really what you were hoping for from Maxis." Still, the studio Will Wright built (and later left) seems to be trying its best to work the idea - an idea it's had since wrapping the original <em>Spore</em>, we're told <em>- </em>into something that will satisfy a more hardcore, multiplayer-focused PC gamer.<br />

According to <a href="https://jobs.ea.com/search/view.do?id=a0z50000000IafoAAC">a job notice</a> recently discovered by <a href="http://supererogatory.tumblr.com/post/810212779/maxis-is-seeking-an-experienced-development">superannuation</a>, Maxis is currently hiring a development director to aid in the creation of "an unannounced next-generation Online simulation game." The job's prerequisites give a few hints about what the new project might entail, including requirements such as "shipped at least one online PC title" and "has shipped at least one game with an online financial model, including online stores and DLC's."<br />
<br />
Regardless of which of Maxis' franchises this new title ends up within, it sounds like it'll be microtransaction-supported. Perhaps superannuation's hypothesis that it'll be a Facebook-based <em>FarmVille</em> competitor isn't too far off.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/14/maxis-hiring-development-director-for-online-simulation-game/">Maxis hiring development director for 'online simulation game'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 14 Jul 2010 18:40:00 EST. The schedule for <a href="http://www.comic-con.org/cci/cci10_prog_sat.php">San Diego Comic Con 2010</a> was updated earlier today, adding a few game-centric panels focusing on titles like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/red-faction-armageddon"><em>Red Faction Armageddon</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/epic-mickey"><em>Epic Mickey</em></a> and more to Saturday's proceedings. However, one panel in particular caught our eye: "Video Game Reveal: Maxis Studio." According to the event's details, the panel will see a handful of members from the Maxis dev team unveil "a brand new, Sci-Fi Action-RPG based on the DNA of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/spore"><em>Spore</em></a>."<br />
<br />
This sounds like it could be the <em>Spore</em> title referenced in EA's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/08/dead-space-2-and-ea-epic-shooter-slated-for-early-2011/">Q3 2010 investor's briefing</a>, the name for which may have surfaced in the company's recent trademark of "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/07/ea-registers-trademark-for-spores-possible-evil-twin-darkspor/">Darkspore</a>." We might just learn what happens when good <em>Spores</em> go bad when the panel unfolds Saturday, July 24.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/10/maxis-spore-based-action-rpg-to-be-announced-at-comic-con/">Maxis' Spore-based action-RPG to be announced at Comic Con</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 10 Jul 2010 15:00:00 EST. The current <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&amp;docId=1000208101">Amazon Deal of the Day</a> is quite possibly the site's most cyclical discount yet: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-sims-3"><em>The Sims 3</em></a> and all of its expansions have had their prices temporarily slashed. That means you can buy the game online, play it, and then buy more games online, but <em>in a virtual world</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/07/the-sims-3-and-expansion-packs-on-sale-at-amazon/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Sims 3 and expansion packs on sale at Amazon</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/07/the-sims-3-and-expansion-packs-on-sale-at-amazon/">The Sims 3 and expansion packs on sale at Amazon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 07 Jul 2010 16:20:00 EST. "I did it with 312 girls in two months."<br />
<br />
That <em>unsavory</em> proclamation is the first in a long series of deep, dark confessions made in the debut trailer, currently <a href="http://www.mtv.com/videos/news/525299/the-sims-3-trailer.jhtml">hosted on MTV</a>, for the console versions of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/27/the-sims-3-coming-to-ps3-xbox-360-wii-and-ds-this-fall/"><em>The Sims 3</em></a>. Watch as ordinary people -- by which, of course, we mean paid, professional actors -- air out their dirty, in-game laundry.<br />
<br />
We find the whole ordeal more than a little surprising. We've always conducted ourselves in the world of <em>The Sims</em> just as we do in real life -- that is to say, as fine, upstanding citizens. Not as murderers, thieves and <em>unashamed hussies</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/07/sims-3-console-trailer-exposes-the-dark-nature-of-humanity/">Sims 3 console trailer exposes the dark nature of humanity</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 21:00:00 EST. A fan site of all things Simlish, called <a href="http://news.infinitesims.com/1296/the-sims-medieval/">Infinite Sims</a>, recently uncovered a handful of web domains registered by the ever-stealthy, third-party outfit Corporate Domains, Inc. These reserved addresses could be an indication of an upcoming expansion to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-sims"><em>Sims</em></a> universe -- one that could take the bright, cheerful world of Sunset Valley back into the Dark Ages.<br />
<br />
The reserved domain names all include some variation of "thesimsmedieval" or "thesimsgetmedieval," which might hint at the subject matter of the next batch of content for the highly successful franchise. Hey, we wouldn't mind trying to move up the Sim caste system. Maybe learn how to joust? Perhaps go pheasant hunting in the northern wilds? Learn how to relieve ourselves properly in a sturdy waste bucket? No, wait. That last thing sounds <em>terrible</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/01/the-sims-medieval-web-domains-registered/">The Sims 'Medieval' web domains registered</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Jun 2010 16:00:00 EST. Oh, sure, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/spore"><em>Spore</em>'s</a> a nice enough guy. But ... don't you sometimes wish he had a <em>bad streak</em>? You've always been attracted to the lone wolf, the rebel, the ne'er-do-well -- that goody-two-shoes <em>Spore</em> wouldn't know the first thing about satisfying your desire for unwholesome behavior. You know who does? His <em>edgy</em> twin brother, <em>Darkspore</em>.<br />
<br />
At least, we're <em>assuming</em> EA's recently registered <a href="http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=serial&amp;entry=85028521">trio</a> <a href="http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=serial&amp;entry=85028524">of</a> <a href="http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=serial&amp;entry=85028531">trademarks</a> for "<em>Darkspore</em>," <a href="http://supererogatory.tumblr.com/post/578289826/electronic-arts-has-filed-three-trademarks-for">discovered by Superannuation</a>, are reserving the title for the franchise's next, considerably darker iteration. Is it possibly the <em>Spore</em> title hinted at in EA's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/08/dead-space-2-and-ea-epic-shooter-slated-for-early-2011/">Q3 2010 financial report</a>? Or is it an unexpected evil twin, making a soap operatic surprise entrance? Only time (and possibly EA's press conference <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2010">at E3</a>) will tell.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/07/ea-registers-trademark-for-spores-possible-evil-twin-darkspor/">EA registers trademark for Spore's possible evil twin, 'Darkspore'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 07 May 2010 19:30:00 EST. The action-adventure <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/spore-hero">Spore Hero</a></em> for Wii is $17.99, while the DS fighting game <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/spore-hero-arena">Spore Hero Arena</a></em> has been knocked down to the impulse-buy price of $10.99. A couple of years ago, Maxis co-founder Jeff Braun <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/22/new-oddworld-game-in-the-works-may-be-years-off/">decided it was a good time</a> to start teasing us with the prospect of a new installment in the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/oddworld"><em>Oddworld</em></a> franchise. We've been desperately nurturing that little glimmer of hope since his announcement -- but we might have to extinguish our excitement for the time being. The series' creator, Lorne Lanning, <a href="http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/704181/New-Oddworld-Game-Shelved-Older-Games-Coming-To-PC-In-2010.html">recently told G4TV</a> that the next <em>Oddworld</em> game has been put "on the shelf."<br />
<br />
"There's a lot of shakeup going on [in the gaming industry]," Lanning explained, "and in that turmoil, we didn't really want to put the Oddworld brand out there in the middle of it." Looks like our <em>Oddworld</em> desires will have to be sated by the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/09/oddworld-games-coming-to-psn-former-console-exclusive-entries-c/"><em>Oddbox</em></a> collection, which will bring the series' four console outings to Steam later this year -- or by purchasing the first two games <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/sub/949/">on Steam together</a>, right now, for $9.99.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/25/new-oddworld-on-hold-old-oddworlds-coming-to-steam-this-year/">New Oddworld on hold, old Oddworlds coming to Steam this year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 25 Apr 2010 20:00:00 EST. I think we can all agree that, aside from being hit by a speeding train or dropping a hot meal you've been cooking for hours, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/layoffs">being fired from your job</a> is like, <em>the worst</em> thing that can happen to you. As such, we expected the speakers on last week's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2010">GDC</a> rant panel, titled "Fired and Fired-up: Jobless Developer's Rant," to be especially inflammatory. We were not disappointed.<br />
<br />
Just past the jump, we've highlighted three of our favorite presentations from the panel. Some of them get awfully, <em>explicitly</em> blue, so if you happen to find yourself reading this video game news site while at work, you might want to think twice about going beyond the break. (You should also get back to work, you lazy so-and-so!)<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/15/gdc-recently-laid-off-developers-rant-about-being-laid-off/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Recently laid-off devs rant about being recently laid off</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/15/gdc-recently-laid-off-developers-rant-about-being-laid-off/">Recently laid-off devs rant about being recently laid off</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Mar 2010 13:30:00 EST. The expansion allows players to extend the lives of their sims, endowing them with many different career options, including inventor, fireman or a detective. None of that is important, though. What <em>is</em> important, is that the expansion allows you to be a <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/ghostbusters">Ghostbuster</a>. Legal reasons probably prevent it from being <em>called</em> ghost busting, of course. Atari and EA's lawyers wouldn't want anyone crossing the <em>memes</em>, after all.<br />
<br />
Check out the ghost <strike>busting</strike> catching action -- along with the other professions -- in the trailer above.<br />

It seems virtual voyeurism never goes out of style. <a href="http://www.kidzworld.com/article/22749-the-sims-3-tops-the-charts-in-2009-as-1-best-selling-pc-game-worldwide">A recent Electronic Arts press release</a> has informed us that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-sims-3"><em>The Sims 3</em></a> was last year's best-selling PC game across the globe, according to Chart-track UK, NPD Group, GfK and the publisher's own internal estimates. We imagine a bit of number crunching went into the aforementioned estimates -- we don't think they'd leave that kind of thing to water cooler talk. "So, what do you think, Mark? Best game ever? Yes, great. It's official."<br />
<br />
The EA presser also boasts the company's optimistic outlook on 2010, as the <em>Sims 3</em> community continues to tinker around with the Create A World tools. Check out this neat, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qVk0R34dMA"><em>Robinson Crusoe</em>-esque Machinima</a> to see what these tools are capable of!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/22/ea-sims-3-is-top-selling-pc-game-in-2009-worldwide/">EA: Sims 3 is top selling PC game in 2009 worldwide</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 22 Jan 2010 14:30:00 EST.
