It also manages to use a single power supply, video output and custom-built controller, regardless of the system selected.<br /><br />Jump to 09:30 in the video above for a demonstration of this behemoth in action, including the repurposed NES cartridges that contain different circuit boards for each controller type, or start from the beginning for some deliciously chaotic wiring shots.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/13/project-unity-is-15-fully-functional-consoles-in-one-giant-box/">'Project Unity' is 15 fully-functional consoles in one giant box</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 13 Apr 2013 18:00:00 EST. Your choice of style can be ordered in one of four hardware configurations, with ascending prices ranging from &yen;99,750 ($1075.47) to &yen;194,250 ($2094.35). The base model comes equipped with the 64-bit version of Windows 8, a 1920x1080 display, 4 gigs of RAM and a 500 gig HD, all powered by a Pentium 2020M processor, according to our friends at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/15/sega-themed-netbooks-beckon-japanese-mega-drive-and-dreamcast/">Engadget</a>.<br /><br />It's kind of a lot of money for not a lot of computer, but each laptop is packed with Sega-branded Windows 8 themes, replete with custom system sounds. Shipment is expected to begin in June for those who either live in Japan or are brave enough to import.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-note-pc/">Sega Note PC</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-note-pc/#5644498"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/02/main22148500x500_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-note-pc/#5644499"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/02/main22149500x500_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-note-pc/#5644500"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/02/main22150500x500_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-note-pc/#5644501"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/02/main22166500x500_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-note-pc/#5644503"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/02/122166500x500_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/15/sega-introduces-line-of-console-themed-laptops/">Sega introduces line of console-themed laptops</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Feb 2013 15:30:00 EST. With the benefit of fifteen years or so of technological advancements, developer WaterMelon Co. was able to put it on a 64MB cart, making it the biggest Genesis RPG ever. It's a traditional role-playing game about a botanist named Hoston on a quest to find a rare herb and cure his sick father. Now, the developer wants to update its turn-based throwback RPG for platforms people still use ... and Dreamcast too.<br /><br /><em>Pier Solar HD</em> is planned for Xbox 360, PC, Mac, Linux, and Dreamcast - that last one won't actually be in HD. The style is reminiscent of the original, but places more detailed 16-bit style sprites on hand-drawn HD backgrounds. To fund the redrawing of assets and licensing for new platforms, WaterMelon is seeking $139,000 on <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/573261866/pier-solar-hd-an-rpg-for-xbox360-pc-mac-linux-and">Kickstarter</a>.<br /><br />Backers get a copy of the game for PC, Mac, Linux, or Xbox 360 by pledging at least $15; $49 is required for the Dreamcast CD or a physical copy on the other platforms. Naturally, there are more expensive collector's editions, as well as luxury items like a <em>Pier Solar</em> branded Dreamcast or arcade stick.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/05/genesis-rpg-pier-solar-goes-hd-via-kickstarter/">Genesis RPG 'Pier Solar' goes HD via Kickstarter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 05 Nov 2012 13:00:00 EST. Amongst the recommissioned relics from yesteryear are Phantasy Stars <i>II</i> through <i>IV,</i> <em>Wonder Boy in Monster World</em>, <em>Vectorman 2</em>, and <em>Beyond Oasis.</em> Jump <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/03/steam-adds-genesis-classics-collection-5-beyond-oasis-phantasy/#continued">past the break</a> for the full list, which also includes <em>Dynamite Headdy</em>, one of the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x01qwb2pwTY">best, weirdest</a> games ever made for Sega's classic warhorse.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/03/steam-adds-genesis-classics-collection-5-beyond-oasis-phantasy/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Steam adds Genesis Classics Collection 5: Beyond Oasis, Phantasy Star 2 and more</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/03/steam-adds-genesis-classics-collection-5-beyond-oasis-phantasy/">Steam adds Genesis Classics Collection 5: Beyond Oasis, Phantasy Star 2 and more</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 03 May 2012 17:15:00 EST. A journey into a wondrous console containing a bunch of old Genesis games and some generic motion-controlled games. That's the signpost up ahead. Your next stop: the Sega Zone.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/31177/new-sega-console-hitting-summer">Pocket Lint</a> has images of a new licensed Sega console called the Sega Zone (or the Zone Sega, according to the box), out in the UK this summer, that contains 20 Genesis classics and 30 new games, 16 of which can be played with the device's two wireless motion controllers.<br />
<br />
Essentially a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/04/hands-on-firecore-classic-console/">Firecore Classic Console</a> crossed with the "Zone 40," an existing knockoff Wii console, the Sega Zone also features a cartridge slot so you can play your copy of <em>McDonalds' Treasure Land Adventure</em>. It'll sell for <span class="blueLinks">&pound;39.95 (about $60) in the UK.<br />

Personally, the last time this blogger played <em>Winter Games, </em>it was on the <a href="http://www.videogamecritic.net/7800sz.htm#Winter_Games">Atari 7800</a>.<br /><br />Also available this week for PAL downloaders: last week's North American release,<em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/09/vc-in-brief-wolf-of-the-battlefield-mercs/">Wolf of the Battlefield: MERCS</a>.</em> It lacks the multiplayer of the arcade game, but it's a pretty okay action game on its own, full of ridiculous attitude and 16-bit bombast. Overall, it's not the greatest week, but neither is it <em>Urban Champion</em>.<br />

That we never played! Oh, happy days. If you haven't downloaded the first game, why on earth not? Beyond the crude visuals lies a highly entertaining and surprisingly atmospheric puzzle-based platformer. The sequel sounds like more of the same but with a few new robots, which is fine with us.<br /><br />Meanwhile, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/25/vc-friday-ninja-dragon-games/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Last Ninja 3</span></a> is the second C64 title available this week. Has it aged as poorly as the first two? Probably. It certainly looks similar in footage, though Reyn Ouwehand's soundrack still rocks our socks. Then there's <span style="font-style: italic;">Boogerman</span>, which you really shouldn't download. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/24/vc-monday-madness-boogerman/">Here's a video</a> explaining why.<br />
<ul>
    <li><span style="font-style: italic;">Last Ninja 3</span>* -- Commodore 64 -- 500 Wii Points</li>

* Europe only, obviously. <br />This week's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/friday">PAL Virtual Console</a> line-up isn't short on quality, but it represents fairly <em>awful</em> value. As dreamy as we find any <span style="font-style: italic;">Metal Slug</span> title, there are cheaper ways to play all three of this week's offerings. <br /><br />Want <span style="font-style: italic;">Metal Slug 2</span>? We'd recommend picking up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/21/metareview-metal-slug-anthology/">this</a>. Fancy having your delicate gamer's ego rudely kicked in by <span style="font-style: italic;">Forgotten World</span>s? There's an <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ps2/capcomclassicscollection">excellent compilation</a> out there for a bunch of platforms that costs <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Capcom-Classic-Collection-PS2/dp/B000BLE99G">peanuts</a> and comes with another 20 or so games. If you can't find <span style="font-style: italic;">Space Invaders</span> for less than &pound;6/&euro;8, you're probably reading the wrong website. Better still: lavish those points on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/10/wii-fanboy-review-space-invaders-get-even/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Space Invaders Get Even!</span></a>.<br />

The last time we played Sega's classic rail shooter was in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/do-you-know-where-i-can-find-sailors.jpg">the arcades of <span style="font-style: italic;">Shenmue</span></a>, and we seem to recall it feeling a bit ancient, but still being a bit of a hoot.<br /><br />Also appearing is <span style="font-style: italic;">Street Fighter II: Special Championship Edition</span> (which, rather ludicrously, is the <span style="font-style: italic;">third</span> variation of <span style="font-style: italic;">Street Fighter II</span> to appear on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/friday">PAL Virtual Console</a>) and <span style="font-style: italic;">Mayhem in Monsterland</span>, one of the very last of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/commodore-64">Commodore 64</a>'s 20,000 or so titles, and a graphical stunner for the time. Footage of all three is past the break. <br />

Not long ago, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/29/stars-catalogue-music-download-service-finally-revealed/">news of Nintendo selling music</a> appeared in our RSS feed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/11/rumor-nintendo-selling-songs-in-exchange-for-stars/">weeks early</a>, only to lead to a dead link after it was hastily pulled by Nintendo. And now another slippage has occurred, with Nintendo accidentally revealing (what we suspect are the contents of) tomorrow's PAL Virtual Console update: <em>Earthworm Jim</em> and <em>Shining Force II</em>.<br /><br />Once again, the news appears in our RSS feed (as seen <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/ewj_shiningforce_rss_reader.jpg">here</a>) while the story itself has been yanked from Ninty's site. All being well then, tomorrow's VC update for Europe and Australia <em>should</em> read something like this:<br />
<ul>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/21/earthworm-jim-other-interplay-games-coming-to-virtual-console/"><em>Earthworm Jim</em></a> -- Mega Drive -- 800 Wii Points</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/vc-tuesday-srpg-tuesday/"><em>Shining Force II: The Ancient Seal</em></a> -- Mega Drive -- 800 Wii Points</li>
</ul>
These aren't set in stone yet, so we'll label this as a rumor, but it looks likely. Also: "Hurray!" for both of these.<br /><br /><u>Update</u>: And it's confirmed: those are your titles for this week, PAL people! [Thanks, Lanceh!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/02/vc-friday-thursday-edition/">VC Friday: Thursday edition [Update 1]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 02 Oct 2008 18:38:00 EST. With the Mega Drive/Genesis version <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/12/friday-is-vc-day-for-europe/">already available</a> on the Virtual Console for 300 Points more, we suspect the Master System edition is for either <span style="font-style: italic;">Sonic </span>completists or cheapskates. We fit both categories.<br /><br />Then there are a couple of ye olde classics from the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/commodore-64">Commodore 64</a>: <em>Boulder Dash</em> and <em>Jumpman</em>. The name "<em>Jumpman</em>" is <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario#Conception_and_creation">coincidental</a>, by the way, though the game is probably similar enough to <a href="http://dkmegasite.vgfort.com/arcade.php"><em>Donkey Kong</em></a> to warrant suspicion.

<br />Game sequels often suffer from a reputation of being weaker than their predecessors, but that hasn't stopped Nintendo whacking a whole pile of them on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/friday">PAL Virtual Console</a> this week. The M-rated <span style="font-style: italic;">Splatterhouse 2</span> leads the charge, bloodied lead pipe in hand, and is joined by <span style="font-style: italic;">Samurai Shodown II</span>, <span style="font-style: italic;">Pitstop II</span>, and <span style="font-style: italic;">Ecco Jr.</span> (okay, so that's not a sequel in the strictest sense of the term, but a spin-off for the kids). Here's what that little lot will cost you:<br />
<ul>
    <li><span style="font-style: italic;">Ecco Jr.</span> -- Mega Drive -- 800 Wii Points<span style="font-style: italic;"></span></li>
    <li><span style="font-style: italic;">Splatterhouse 2</span> -- Mega Drive -- 800 Wii Points<span style="font-style: italic;"></span></li>
    <li><span style="font-style: italic;">Samurai Shodown II</span> -- Neo Geo -- 900 Wii Points<span style="font-style: italic;"></span></li>
    <li><span style="font-style: italic;">Pitstop II</span> -- Commodore 64 -- 500 Wii Points *<br /></li>
</ul>
* As usual, Australia misses out on the Commodore 64 game.<br /><br />Footage of all four is past the break -- try listening to six minutes of <span style="font-style: italic;">Pitstop II</span>'s engine effects without going insane.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/08/vc-friday-sequel-week/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>VC Friday: Sequel week</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/08/vc-friday-sequel-week/">VC Friday: Sequel week</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 08 Aug 2008 12:50:00 EST. Hurrah! These range from forgettable spin-offs (<em>Pac-Attack</em> -- the first SNES title we've seen in over three months, bizarrely) to a Commodore 64 fan favorite (<em>Cybernoid</em>) to SNK's excellent <em>King of the Monsters</em>, which probably <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rampage_2:_Universal_Tour">hasn't been</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/27/godzilla-unleashed-takes-a-double-crap-on-the-ds/">bettered</a> in the monsters-breaking-stuff genre since its release.<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Super Fantasy Zone</em> -- Mega Drive -- 800 Wii Points</li>
    <li><em>Pac-Attack</em> -- SNES -- 800 Wii Points</li>
    <li><em>Summer Games 2</em> -- Commodore 64 -- 500 Wii Points</li>
    <li><em>Cybernoid</em> -- Commodore 64 -- 500 Wii Points</li>
    <li><em>King of the Monsters</em> -- Neo Geo -- 900 Wii Points</li>

We have some videos featuring some of the above for you, but you'll have to smash the break down with your giant monster limbs to access them.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/vc-friday-a-monstrous-update/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>VC Friday: A monstrous update</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/vc-friday-a-monstrous-update/">VC Friday: A monstrous update</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Jun 2008 12:30:00 EST. Of the ten games released so far under the Hanabi banner, half have been shooters, including the two released today, Japan-only pair <em>Star Parodier</em> (in which you can use <em>Bomberman</em> or a giant PC Engine as a ship!) and <em>Gley Lancer</em>. They're joined this <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/friday">VC Friday</a> by <span style="font-style: italic;">Digital Champ Battle Boxing</span>. <br /><br />Oh, and fun fact: the name <span style="font-style: italic;">Gley Lancer</span> was (allegedly) supposed to be "Grey Lancer," but ended up as <span style="font-style: italic;">Gley Lancer</span> due to a pronunciation error (the Japanese language can't tell the difference between the English "r" and "l" sounds). Either that, or we've just been duped into believing a rather racist joke.<br />

The VC is jam-packed with memories from yesteryear, spilling over with wonderful software that defined our childhoods. But it isn't all lollipops and puppy dogs. Nostalgia can also be very misleading, and some of those packets of data you download from Nintendo's service can end up souring childhood memories.<br />
<br />
Personally speaking -- and this will probably sound like heresy in some quarters, so brace yourselves -- I was left disappointed by <em>Mega Man 2</em>, a game I adored as an eleven-year-old, but one that now seems slightly dated, with its repeated leaps of faith and enemies that like to spawn directly beneath you. On the other hand, a game such as <em>Super Mario Bros. 3</em> <em>still </em>feels like a breath of fresh air, almost two decades after it was released.<br />
<br />
Thinking about this some more, we have three questions for you. One: which <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/vctuesday/">Virtual Console</a> games don't hold the same magic for you as they once did? Two: have any titles aged better than you suspected they would? And three: have you ever held off from downloading a certain game, concerned that it may ruin one of those precious childhood memories?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/10/wii-warm-up-through-rose-tinted-glasses/">Wii Warm Up: Through rose-tinted glasses</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 10 May 2008 10:30:00 EST. <br />We were already <span style="font-style: italic;">totally pumped</span> about getting <span style="font-style: italic;"></span><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/02/vc-friday-the-hanabi-festival-returns/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Cho Aniki</span></a> on the European and Aussie Virtual Consoles, but our faces lit up when we saw what else was lying in store for us this morning. <span style="font-style: italic;">Metal Slug</span> is the first Neo Geo game to appear on the download service since <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/14/vc-friday-mega-man/">December 14th</a>, but what a comeback!<br /><br />From a value-for-money perspective, we'd still recommend picking up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/21/metareview-metal-slug-anthology/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Metal Slug Anthology</span></a> (especially now that it's so <a href="http://www.play.com/Games/Wii/4-/1027925/Metal-Slug-Anthology/Product.html?cm_mmc=Froogle-_-VideoGames-_-Action-_-Metal+Slug+Anthology&amp;source=5063&amp;engine=froogle_videogames&amp;keyword=Metal+Slug+Anthology+(WII)">cheap</a>), but it's great to see <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/snk">SNK</a>'s classic series represented on the VC (and this version even has Classic Controller support). <span style="font-style: italic;">Puyo Puyo 2</span> and TurboGrafx billiards title <span style="font-style: italic;">Break In</span> complete this week's line-up.<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Cho Aniki</em> -- TurboGrafx-16 -- 900 Wii Points</li>

What does that mean? Simple: for the next few weeks, the VC will feature games that were previously unreleased in Europe or Australia, which we suppose justifies the slightly higher price tags.<br /><br />Best of all, we're <a href="http://www.nintendo.co.uk/NOE/en_GB/news/2008/hanabi_festival_returns_to_virtual_console_8036.html">promised</a> that this will continue for the next few weeks. Wonder what else we'll get? Here are this week's trio:<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Columns III: Revenge of Columns</em> -- Mega Drive -- 900 Wii Points</li>
    <li><em>Final Soldier</em> -- TurboGrafx-16 -- 700 Wii Points</li>

The first, 2D fighter <em>Eternal Champions</em>, should only concern the most ardent supporters of the company.<br /><br />Indeed, if our bastardization of "VC Friday" tells you anything, it's that this is the week of <em>Phantasy Star II</em>. Sega's RPG is rightfully a huge favorite amongst the Fanboy staff, and it should be high on your list as well. For 800 Wii points, on a machine with no notable RPGs to call its own, it's a pretty damn essential addition to your Virtual Console library.<br />

Plus, y'know, some other stuff, which is usually pretty pricey, as VC titles goes. But this week, European gamers get a little break with a release out there for only 600 points. On top of that, there's four games from which Wii owners may choose. Sometimes, it's good to be a Nintendo fan.<br />
