What's the point of applying a score to a game that's old enough to be enrolled in the sixth grade? That's why we invented Deja Review: A quick look at the new features and relative agelessness of remade, revived and re-released games.

If you've never played a Metal Gear Solid game before, the slogan "tactical espionage action" probably doesn't evoke memories of baffling sci-fi plots, ludicrous boss fights and the occasional bit of fourth wall humor. For the rest of us, Metal Gear Solid stands as one of the strangest and most iconic franchises of the last generation.

The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection wrangles together updated versions of Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater for the first time in high definition. Also included is a console version of the Playstation Portable title, Peace Walker. Add to that the original MSX2 versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2, all for ten dollars less than the price of a standard console game, and you've got a collection approaching Orange Box levels of value.

And while what's included in this anthology is quite impressive, it's the elements that are missing in action that tend to stick out.
Continue reading Deja Review: Metal Gear Solid HD Collection

Deja Review: Metal Gear Solid HD Collection originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 15 Nov 2011 16:30:00 EST. Konami has announced a European release date for the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, an enhanced assembly of Hideo Kojima's playful, odd and utterly Byzantine stealth saga. (Well, most of it.) It'll be in shops for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on February 3, 2012.

We've contacted Konami via uncompressed codec to confirm the HD collection's North American release date, which most retailers and rental outlets still list as November 8th, 2011. [Update: Konami has confirmed that date.] A Limited Edition packing a <strike>450-page</strike> 250-page art book will also be available, as will this repeated reminder of what you're getting in the box: Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. The Subsistence edition of MGS3 also includes Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake.

The nested novelty of playing an MSX game inside a PS3 port of a PS2 game sounds too good to resist!
Continue reading Metal Gear Solid HD Collection slithers into Europe on Feb. 3, 2012 [update: US on Nov. 8]

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection slithers into Europe on Feb. 3, 2012 [update: US on Nov. 8] originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 26 Oct 2011 12:07:00 EST. Update: According to Konami's Twitter feed, Transfarring is coming to the US PS3 version of Metal Gear Solid HD Collection.

Original story: The coming PS3 HD edition of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was supposed to include Hideo Kojima's cloud-saving gem, Transfarring, to share game saves between the PSP and PS3 -- notice the past tense "was supposed to." Transfarring will only be available in Japan when Peace Walker releases in November, according to Konami's information packet from TGS 2011.

Kojima had previously said Transfarring would be available for every Kojima Productions release in the future, although to be fair, he didn't say where it would be available. Even if Kojima only releases it for himself and he spends the remainder of his days Transfarring, alone, that's still technically available. It's also kind of rude.

We've contacted Konami for clarification.

The HD version of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker offers nice bonuses beyond sharper graphics and dual analog controls. Today, Hideo Kojima announced that Peace Walker will feature online co-op (or CO-OPS, as it's known in-game) on Xbox 360 and PS3 via infrastructure mode.

It is possible to play the PSP version online, but to do so requires Sony's "adhocParty" app, and a connection to a PS3 that is using a wired internet connection. This version will be as simple as it is with any other Xbox Live/PSN game. And, Kojima confirmed, it'll run in 60 frames per second even with 4 players.

While you grudgingly admit that you want to buy the games again, now in the HD collection, here's a little perspective: Peace Walker is being sold separately in Japan, but it's just one part of a bundle here.
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD will have online co-op through PSN and Xbox Live originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 05 Sep 2011 10:30:00 EST. A Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker clothing line?! Yes, Snake, a Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker clothing line. Konami is entering CO-OPS with a company called Musterbrand to produce clothing inspired by, and even based on, the characters and imagery from last year's PSP game.

The items range from logo t-shirts to replicas of clothing worn by prominent characters -- Kazuhira Miller's shirt is included in the lineup, sans jaunty yellow neckerchief. Perhaps that'll be in the next release; Konami and Musterbrand plan to update the line "quarterly and surrounding certain special events throughout the year."

As for the current items: you'll be able to Peace Walk in game-inspired pants starting April 11, when the first pieces will be available online in North America (probably through Konami.com).

Gallery: Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker clothing line

Naked Snake no more: Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker clothing line coming April 11 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 10:00:00 EST. How did you feel about the downloadable Vocaloid content for Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker? When encountering an enemy, what tactics do you use? Would you be interested in a Metal Gear game on an Android phone?

Konami is very, very curious about what fans think about its Metal Gear franchise. A "Survey Mission" on the company's Facebook page lets fans opine about nearly every intricate detail about the series, going all the way back to the MSX era. Who knows? Your votes may end up influencing the future of the franchise! But be warned: this is a very, very long survey.
Super Mario Galaxy 2
This is my personal favorite game of 2010 for many reasons, all of which you can read in the review I wrote back in May. In a nutshell: It's the best Mario game ever -- in my opinion, but I've been told I'm not alone -- and can pretty much claim the title of best-ever platformer while it's at it. The experience is magical, the design is masterful and if there were one game I could be stranded on a desert island with ... well, this is it.
Continue reading Best of the Rest: Randy's picks of 2010

Best of the Rest: Randy's picks of 2010 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 02 Jan 2011 10:00:00 EST. DQIX is secretly two games: when you're playing through the main quest, it's a traditional JRPG with a light but interesting story populated by unexpectedly engaging characters and perfectly brisk pacing; then as you approach the end, it becomes a dungeon crawler driven by a dungeon map trading mechanic using the passive communication of the DS.

How compelling is that "tag mode" mechanic? I can't think of any other game for which I would go hang out at a GameStop and then a Best Buy, but that's exactly what I did when Nintendo held DQIX events this summer. I needed those maps. That's how I know this is my favorite game of 2010.
Continue reading Best of the Rest: JC's picks of 2010

Best of the Rest: JC's picks of 2010 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 31 Dec 2010 11:00:00 EST. If you've still got a few bills or coins tucked betwixt the cushions of your couch that have managed to go unspent in this deal-heavy season, you might want to hold them tight until tomorrow, when Sony kicks off the PSN Fall Sale. The week-long promotion will cut the prices of select downloadable PS3, PSP and Mini titles in half, bringing games like DeathSpank, Joe Danger, Dissidia: Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker into the magical realm of affordability.

Check out the full list of offers, which will go live in conjunction with tomorrow's PlayStation Store update, just past the jump.
Continue reading PSN Fall Sale kicks off tomorrow; DeathSpank, Peace Walker and more half price

PSN Fall Sale kicks off tomorrow; DeathSpank, Peace Walker and more half price originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 22 Nov 2010 14:00:00 EST. The growth comes almost entirely from the "Computer & Video Games" group within the division.

The results can be attributed to two games in particular: Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and Winning Eleven, both of which were cited in Konami's Q1 report as well, and whose sales "progressed favorably," according to the latest report. Because of these games, the PS3 and PSP accounted for 57% of Konami's video game business.

Konami's Japan-only DS dating simulator Love Plus Plus has also proven successful for the company, which said it "could be called a social phenomenon in Japan." Konami is following it up with a 3DS sequel and two arcade games. So there you have it -- love and peace!
Love and Peace lead to success in first half of Konami's fiscal 2011 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 04 Nov 2010 12:00:00 EST. Well, we say that, but seeing The Boss in Monster Hunter is a shock no matter how prepared we thought we were.

The PSP port of Monster Hunter 3 will include armor to make your male or female character look like Snake or The Boss, respectively, along with Metal Gear-inspired costumes for your Felyne companions -- who can now hide in cardboard boxes (just like our cats). And then ship yourself to Japan in it. Konami is holding a Metal Gear Solid cosplay contest next month, with the winner to be determined at the Tokyo Game Show.

Interested Johnny Sasaki lookalikes (and other Metal Gear cosplayers) can submit pictures here (warning: Japanese-language application!) Konami will select a few of the entries to appear at the publisher's TGS booth on September 18. There, they will be evaluated by a panel of guest judges to be announced later -- as well as the TGS attendees in general, who know a thing or two about dressing up.

The most difficult thing about Metal Gear cosplay is that if you're too accurate, you'll be too stealthy for the judges to notice.
Cosplayers will compete at Tokyo Game Show's 'Metal Gear Cosplay Camp' originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 24 Aug 2010 07:00:00 EST. Within its Digital & Entertainment Business division (the one for video games), Konami attributed the income to Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Winning Eleven 2010 Aoki Samurai no Chosen (which "
was launched on multiple platforms in May to coincide with the once-every-four-years festivities that excite soccer fans worldwide"), and the Japan-only DS girlfriend simulator Love Plus, which has since been expanded with a followup release, Love Plus+.

Other contributing games with "strong sales" included Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side 3rd Story and Fairy Tail Portable Guild, both for PSP. In the future, the company is looking to make a bigger splash in "the expanding overseas video game software market" with Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Winning Eleven, and music games like Def Jam Rapstar and Karaoke Revolution Glee. We're guessing we'll see more PSP games from Konami, as well, since that's going so nicely for them.

That's a pretty high number for a PSP game, but it's not outrageous for a game that is at least part Monster Hunter. The sales were "according to expectations" at the time of the interview -- which predated this month's North American and European release of the game. We'll find out next month how many copies sneaked into Western homes in the first month of release.

Tanaka also announced a delay for Metal Gear Arcade out of its original March release date. The company is putting in some extra time on the title, which most of us will never see anyway, because seriously, when was the last time you saw an arcade?
Konami expects Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker to sell 3m, delays Metal Gear Arcade originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 25 Jun 2010 23:00:00 EST. Now that you've read our review for Hideo Kojima's latest, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, it's time we knocked the cardboard box off the rest of the industry's thoughts. What did the critics have to say? CQC the reviews below to find out:

IGN (95/100): "This game is insanely deep...a masterpiece. Not only is it in the running for the title of greatest game ever on the PSP, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is one of the greatest games in the entire Metal Gear franchise."

1UP (91/100): "It's at once true to its heritage yet willing to spin the Metal Gear format in a new and entertaining direction. And while the fallout from these changes does occasionally undermine the action, those small moments of frustration and compromise are forgivable in the context of all that Peace Walker does well."

GameTrailers (91/100): "While we miss the crazy bad guys and refined controls, Peace Walker definitely lives up to the Metal Gear name. Base management adds a deeper sense of growth to the experience and there's plenty to come back to after you finish the story."

Eurogamer (80/100): "Mother Base, co-op and Extra Ops are great additions to the Metal Gear formula and luxuriously comfortable fits for handheld play. The subdued campaign is not Kojima at his histrionic and surprising best, but it arguably offers the tightest stealth gameplay since Snake Eater or even the first Metal Gear Solid."

Remember when Hideo Kojima said that Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker would contain a feature so great that it would make people want to buy a PSP? Well, ol' Hideo got one over on us again, because it isn't just one feature: it's the entire game.

Rather than create a Metal Gear experience that somehow works within the confines of the handheld's capabilities, he and the Metal Gear Solid 4 team at Kojima Productions seem to have been inspired by them. The result is a game that is very much a "true" Metal Gear Solid that fits in your pocket, and much more. It's almost as if Kojima, compelled to make just one more game in the series -- wasn't there something about MGS4 being his last? -- looked at the PSP and said, "Let's show them everything we've got."
The company has unveiled a special Peace Walker version of its A30 headset, featuring Peace Walker imagery on the earphones. It has the same cross-platform compatibility as the traditional A30, and the same ability to swap out the graphics.

If you want the sides of your head to bear the Peace Walker logo (and if you also want to hear sounds and stuff), you can pick one of these up for $150. You can also add $20 and get a <strike>downloadable</strike> boxed copy of the game, which is probably something you want, considering that you're hypothetically going to drop crazy bucks on a headset with its name on it.

[Update: corrected the bonus offer: $20 gets you a retail, packaged copy of Peace Walker.]

Hear the sounds of stealth with Astro Gaming's Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker headset originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 08 Jun 2010 10:55:00 EST. Details will be shared at a later date."

Kojima and Square Enix have collaborated on a set of Peace Walker figurines under the company's Play Arts Kai line; in addition, Front Mission content is one of the many tie-ins included in Peace Walker. It's likely the next collaboration will be something similar. The picture was taken somewhere that Front Mission Evolved was being shown -- a game that Andriasang notes is being produced by Hashimoto -- so that could be a hint that a Metal Gear series cameo might occur in the upcoming mech game. Or it could be more photographs of the developers, as a little gift for the fans.
Square Enix and Hideo Kojima collaborating on ... something originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 20:00:00 EST. The NWD-W253Z Walkman is a special edition of a new waterproof (!), wrap-around Walkman MP3 player, featuring an original camouflage design and preloaded with six songs from Peace Walker.

The 4GB Walkman will be released in Japan in "mid-May" for ¥11,800 ($128). Each order will include a voucher for downloadable in-game characters (in Walkman apparel, of course!). To celebrate the US launch, Hideo Kojima himself will appear at the Flagship UNIQLO store in New York City on that day to sign autographs. In addition, prizes including artbooks and PSP bundles will be given away.

The best part: for the millions of us who don't live anywhere near a UNIQLO store, the shirts will also be available online. Each one will include a code for the same shirt in-game. You can put a picture of Snake on Snake so you can sneak while you sneak. Are you ready to scour the deepest corners of the internet to prove your Metal Gear Solid fandom? Should you and four of your friends have a lot of free time on your hands, you can partake in Konami's MGS-themed Code Hunt, taking place across various sites on the internet. (Sorry, this one isn't one of them.) Get the top positions on the leaderboards, and you'll be able to win the grand prize: $10,000 to be divided evenly amongst all members of your team. Runner-up prizes include a Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker "Big Boss" PSP Bundle and gift cards.

The contest ends on June 2nd, meaning you have plenty of time to figure out what the heck these clues mean. If you're able to understand an MGS story, you should have no problem breaking this code, right? Good luck!
Konami launches MGS: Peace Walker code hunt originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 10 May 2010 12:45:00 EST. One of the most iconic "power-ups" in gaming has to be Metal Gear Solid's cardboard box. This new Japanese ad for Kojima's latest, Peace Walker, gives the stealthy item the spotlight. In the commercial, a Japanese schoolboy can be seen stalking a few of his fellow classmates. As he finds the two alone, he strikes, asking them to "please enter my box."

Unfortunately for the girl, the box boy wasn't asking about her. He invites the other boy into the cardboard box, as the commercial introduces the new co-op box-wearing mechanic of Peace Walker. You can check it out after the break.
You know that crazy story you read about Snake fighting monsters from the Monster Hunter series in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker? Well, today we've got actual images of Snake in the act -- can't have a PSP game without monster hunting in it, amirite? Jokes aside, Snake seriously fights some dragons and it's pretty crazy.
Our second featured gallery (which, if you're going on The Price is Right rules, makes it better than the first) takes us through virtual boot camp. This is akin to the MGS we're used to seeing: sneaking around industrial facilities and stealthily taking out inept guards. Pick your poison below.
Well, they're helpful if you speak Japanese, that is. The latest round of ads for Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker out of Japan centers on the escapades of Tom and Dick, two cartoon dudes who really, really like living everyday life as if they were Solid Snake. The duo demonstrate everything from the "heart massage" technique (reviving a downed teammate) to the game's four player co-op functionality, with plenty of goofy animation to boot.

Andriasang noticed the ads over at the "Hamaru Gear Solid" website -- "Hamaru Gear Solid" is the marketing campaign for Peace Walker, based on Hirokazu Hamamura, CEO of Enterbrain (the company that owns and publishes Japanese gaming mag Famitsu), and a pun relating his name to the word "Hamaru" (meaning "to get in"). We've embedded all five for you after the break, should you choose to entertain their sheer madness.
However, 'A Scene' that is critical and essential to the series was pointed out by the rating board." Kojima lamented the fact that the anti-war and anti-nuke messages of the game were ignored by the ratings board, while one bloody scene was seized upon. The American and European releases of the game will be uncut. We believe the scene in question is likely to be a torture sequence, a staple of the Metal Gear Solid series. It is most assuredly not the scene in which Snake fights a giant dragon-type creature.
Now, thanks to retailer UNIQLO, you can wear a Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker shirt in real life. Whether or not you wear Axe is your call. On April 26, UNIQLO will roll out a line of Peace Walker shirts featuring various logos and imagery from the series, Militaires Sans Frontieres patches, Yoji Shinkawa artwork ... and two suit-wearing gentlemen with cardboard boxes on their heads.

That last one is, appropriately, a multiplayer riff on one of the designs from UNIQLO's Metal Gear Solid 4 line. If you'd like to tell Hideo Kojima how clever that is, CVG reports that he and Shinkawa will be at the London "flagship" UNIQLO on June 19 signing autographs.
Peace Walk into UNIQLO for new Metal Gear Solid shirts originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 Apr 2010 19:15:00 EST. Nothing quite says "Metal Gear Solid" like a collector's edition. Whether it's a PS3 bundle or a camouflage PSP, we've come to expect a certain level of collectability from Kojima Productions' main moneymaker, which is why we're unsurprised to see a listing pop up on GameStop for a Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker "Collector's Edition" -- with a $50 price tag and an "exclusive artbook."

Sure, it might not include the ability to play PSP games while hiding in the jungle, but hey, that exclusive artbook could be really, really neat. For ten bucks, we certainly hope it's one of the neatest artbooks we've ever seen.
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Collector's Edition costs $50, includes 'exclusive artbook' originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 Apr 2010 12:30:00 EST. In addition to the previously-announced set containing the "spirited green" PSP, GameStop is also exclusively offering the "Big Boss Bundle," which, for $200, includes the game and the camouflage PSP-3000 found in the Japanese bundle; in addition to a 4GB memory stick and a carrying case (neither of which is included in the standard bundle, which is also $200). Both hardware bundles also include a free digital copy of imminent disaster flick 2012 ... for some reason.

So, the Big Boss Bundle is more stuff for the same price. You'd have to really hate camo to opt for the other Peace Walker bundle. Both are scheduled for release on June 8.
In the future, games will no longer be bound by platforms. At least, that's what Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima told the press at a conference for the upcoming Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Since the inception of the medium, games have largely been bound to a specific device. "Gamers should be able to take the experience with them in their living rooms, on the go, when they travel -- wherever they are and whenever they want to play. It should be the same software and the same experience," he said, according to Reuters.

As with movies and music, consumers have come to expect increased portability with their media. Whereas a decade ago, movies were largely viewed at home, now they can be watched on a computer, in a car, or even on a phone. Even now, Sony and Apple are offering some cross-platform gaming opportunities, with interoperability between the PSP and PS3, iPhone and iPad.

With the advent of cloud computing services, like OnLive and Gaikai, it seems we may not be too far off from Kojima's predicted future. Until then, though, you'll only be able to play Kojima's latest game on one platform -- the PSP.
Hideo Kojima envisions a platform-free future originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Apr 2010 13:30:00 EST. Kojima Productions recently held a press conference in Japan to celebrate the completion of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, which is set to shed its cardboard box cover for a very visible spot on Japanese store shelves come April 29. During the event, it was revealed that there would be Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G content in the Konami-published game. The collaboration should ensure that every Japanese citizen will now buy Peace Walker, regardless of whether they own a PSP (that's just how it works). 1UP confirms the content will also be in the US version of the game.

Monster Hunter's Felynes -- little cat-like things that act as support in Capcom's title -- will have a presence in Peace Walker. On top of that, some of the rations in Hideo Kojima's latest sneak-'em-up will appear as "well-cooked rations," a play on Monster Hunter's well-cooked meat. Also: Snake will hunt monsters, so ... yeah. Kojima justified the crazy crossover by playing the Jurassic Park card -- specifically, that Peace Walker takes place in Costa Rica. "I figured it'd be the perfect opportunity," he told Japanese mag Famitsu.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker will be out in Europe and North America on May 28 and June 8, respectively. In the latest video, a trio of Snakes, along with some soldiers, team up to take on -- a helicopter. Or, if you prefer Metal Gear Solid 3 naming conventions, The Helicopter. One Snake demonstrates how to look tough while wearing pink fatigues -- by CQC-ing and then kidnapping four soldiers in rapid succession. And we witness the splendor of the Ambulance Box. Remember when we thought of Metal Gear games as realistic military simulations? You know, right before Metal Gear Solid came out.
Peace Walking with friends in co-op Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker footage originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 26 Mar 2010 13:30:00 EST. Why not wash it down with a crisp, refreshing Mountain Dew? On April 27, beverage producer Suntory will release a series of Mountain Dew cans in Japan, decorated with character art from Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.

Of course, this collaboration works both ways. Mountain Dew will appear in Peace Walker as well as an in-game item. The press release says that the appearance of real items in the game "enhances the affinity between the real world and the game's story." It also enhances the affinity between Konami's coffers and cash money. Of course, Metal Gear is no stranger to merchandise tie-ins, with everything from Calorie Mate to Playboy Magazine appearing in the games.
Though we don't possess the thorough comprehension of the Japanese language required to understand what's happening in the video posted above, we know that we like what we see. If you've got some time to kill, check out the ten minute co-op demonstration of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker at the top of this post. It shows of a few of the game's neat multiplayer tactics, including an invisibility gun and the increasingly iconic "four-legged tank maneuver." Judging by those two alone, it certainly looks like Peace Walker's capacity for hijinks is going to be near-limitless.
Ten minutes of co-op sneaking exposed in Peace Walker video originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 18 Mar 2010 21:30:00 EST. Konami's pushed back the release of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker to June 8, a recent press release states. Back in January, the Japanese release was also delayed, so we've been waiting for the other combat boot to drop and it's finally happened. Yup, we're crying under our cardboard box, too. Of course, in addition to the game itself, the newly-announced PSP bundle will be released on the same day.

What we want to know is, if the Japanese delay is a crime, what's the North American delay? A case of first degree joy-icide?
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker release sneaks to June 8 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 16 Mar 2010 14:40:00 EST. But it does include a "Spirited Green" PSP-3000, a color previously unavailable in America. It doesn't include a PSP Go, so we're guessing the "relaunch" hasn't begun yet.

Launching alongside the standalone game on <strike>May 25</strike> June 8, the pack includes said green PSP, a copy of the game on UMD, a 2GB Memory Stick Pro Duo, and vouchers for both an unidentified movie download (for US residents only) and exclusive in-game items in Peace Walker, for $199.99.

Would a totally sweet camouflage bandana push you over the edge? GameStop hopes so: it's offering an exclusive camo bandana, reminiscent of something Snake might adorn his head with, as a pre-order bonus for the game. Wear this, and even if you're not playing on the amazing limited edition system, everyone will know that you're Peace Walking.

We have yet to confirm whether or not it grants infinite ammo to the wearer.
