Take, for instance, the new 'Level 10' mouse from Thermaltake and ... BMW? That can't be right, hold on.

Nope, it's BMW. Anyway, the mouse has five programmable buttons and a "Z-key" that lets the user swap through pre-programmed button configurations while playing. Additionally, the laser resolution can be adjusted from a default of 5,000 DPI up to 8,200. While not explicitly stated, we're assuming that BMW's designers are responsible for the brushed aluminum chassis and the top section's adjustable height/angle design.

Surprisingly, the Level 10 doesn't cost eight times more than it should (like everything else with a BMW badge) and is available now at the peripheral retailer of your choice for a smooth $100.
BMW and Thermaltake made this weird-lookin' gaming mouse (just look at it!) originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 19:30:00 EST. At least, that's what Razer wants you to think. The company recently released it's Naga Hex mouse, which was created especially for MOBAs and action-RPGs, with six side-mounted buttons just for activating in-game skills.

If your mouse just doesn't have enough buttons - or perhaps has too many - the Hex just might help you out, assuming you're willing to shell out 80 bucks, of course. OnLive CEO Steve Perlman promises a lot from his company's new cloud gaming apps for Android and iOS devices, but how does the app actually work? I've been able to play with the iPad version for the past few days, and using just the touchscreen it's far from perfect. While yes, the system does stream full live game audio and video to your device (which is impressive in itself), the controls are, frankly, a mess. OnLive's virtual controllers are just as janky as you'd imagine. In complex console games where you're using both joysticks and all of the buttons, it's playable but far from ideal.

The wireless controller, on the other hand, really shows off what's possible with a service like this. Read on for impressions of using OnLive's new accessory with the iPad, as well as a full list of game compatibility on the service at launch.
Logitech has introduced its new G300 mouse, coming to the US and Europe next month. The biggest selling point seems to be that the mouse is ambidextrous, meaning that as the buttons are laid out symmetrically, you can use it with either your right or your left hand. You can also store up to three profiles on the mouse itself (no software needed), and you can even configure the lighting colors to match up to a certain profile, telling you how it's set with just a look.

There's also a 2500 DPI sensor on the bottom, so your Minecraft blocks will always end up exactly where you place them. The G300 is set to retail for $39.99.
Continue reading Click and drag in style with Logitech's G300 gaming mouse

Click and drag in style with Logitech's G300 gaming mouse originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 22 Aug 2011 04:00:00 EST. Players of the PC version of Dungeon Siege 3 were disappointed with the keyboard-and-mouse controls used in the game, generally deciding that using an Xbox 360 controller was the way to go. If you're one of those folks, lead designer Nathaniel Chapman says there's good news: Obsidian plans to release an update that will improve the traditional PC controls. According to Chapman, better PC controls for the game is "one thing I would have liked to have spent more time on, and we are actually spending time on now."

Chapman also hinted that Obsidian would like to have made "a more fleshed out tutorial system" and "more unique armor variants" for the game's four playable characters. But those will have to wait for future versions of the game: "It's always good sequel or DLC material," he said.
Obsidian plans Dungeon Siege 3 update with better PC controls originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 23 Jun 2011 02:00:00 EST. We have no idea how well this particular peripheral works, but we're thinking about buying the Shogun Bros. Chameleon X-1 based on novelty alone. See, up on top? It's a seven-button wireless mouse. Flip it over? It's a 14-button gaming controller. Put it on it's side? Panini press. Sure, the StarCraft 2-branded Spectre mouse, Marauder keyboard and Banshee headset from Razer (all designed in collaboration with Blizzard) have other features that make them well-suited for games -- like specialized configuration utilities and quick response times -- but those aren't why anyone would buy one of these. Cool backlighting is.

Besides, when the keyboard description lists things like "Optimized Key Travel Distance" as a selling point, "pretty lights" doesn't seem like such a minor thing to latch on to. The set will be released in the US, Europe and Korea in November, with the mouse retailing for $80 (€80/94,800 won), and the keyboard and headset for $120 (€120/142,800 won) each.
Now Xbox 360 owners will be able to get in on the slack-armed fun -- and utilize mouse control in their first-person shooters while they're at it -- with Bannco's "X Scorch" controller, an Xbox-based version of another two-handed PS3 setup, the "FragNStein."

The X Scorch, which is cross-compatible with PC, combines a custom mouse with a wireless Nunchuk-esque controller that features a D-pad, an analog stick and some trigger buttons. According to Bannco, the device is upgradeable via firmware updates and has "digital sniper buttons," which certainly sounds impressive. The X Scorch retails for $79.99. See it in action after the break.
Continue reading 'X Scorch' for Xbox 360 gets in on the split controller craze

'X Scorch' for Xbox 360 gets in on the split controller craze originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 22 Mar 2010 18:00:00 EST. At CES in Las Vegas this week, Mad Catz revealed a quartet of "Premium Cyborg Gaming" mice. From the base model "Cyborg R.A.T.3" at $49.99 that offers a 3200dpi laser, to the super fawncy "Cyborg R.A.T.9" at $129.99 that drops the USB cable for a rechargeable battery and offers a 5600dpi laser, all of them certainly look like something made with the Borg in mind (as evidenced in our gallery below).

The standout feature for the Cyborg line is the grip adjustability of the upper three models. "For the first time ever on a mouse, the key points of contact between the gamer's hand and the mouse are fully adjustable allowing it to be customized for any grip preference," claimed Mad Catz prez Darren Richardson in the press release that announced the line. In addition to the customization factor, the upper three models also get two additional buttons (bringing the grand total up to seven, if you can believe it). No official release date has been set, but they're expected to ship this Spring.
We know how hard it can be to expend precious energy on something as trivial as a keyboard - we spend all day doing exactly that! So it's with proud, near-jubilant excitement that we bring you news of the gaming glove "Peregrine," which allows for keyboard-free game playing, becoming available for pre-order.

It's not exactly equipped to handle twitch shooters: the Peregrine was made with MMOs in mind. Rather than push down all those pesky keyboard buttons, it allows for up to 40 different configurable movements instead. The $129 device (that's if you pre-order -- it'll be $149 otherwise) runs on USB and will connect as a keyboard, so compatibility shouldn't be too much of an issue.

You can quit writing your Power Glove 2.0 fanfic right now - this ain't it. We do, however, expect to see a YouTube-derived sequel to The Wizard around the end of January, when the first pre-orders are expected to ship to consumers. Get on that, internet!

[Via Engadget]
Game controlling glove now available for pre-order and 'The Wizard' remakes originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 04 Dec 2009 03:15:00 EST. Everyone's favorite bipedal canine and hyperkinetic rabbity thing missed the "Early 2009" window for the launch of their third season of adventure games -- but fear not! In a recent interview with The Inquirer, a few fine folks from the Telltale crew explained that the developer is still working on Sam & Max Season 3 -- though the controls may feel a little less clicky this time around.

According to Telltale co-founder Kevin Bruner, Season 3 will feature the cursor-less, console controller-friendly control scheme featured in the PC and 360 adventure title Wallace and Gromit's Grand Adventures. Makes sense -- we know Telltale is interested in bringing the new season to consoles, and having a sans-pointer control scheme would let them do that with ease. However, we imagine adventure game purists and mouse fetishists alike will be none too pleased.
Telltale working on Sam & Max Season 3, using cursor-less controls originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 May 2009 14:00:00 EST. What's the PSP missing? No, not a second analog nub (or hardware refresh), it's missing a mouse!

PSP hacker TokyoDrift found a way to map the handheld's buttons to a mouse, using nothing more than a PS2 mouse, an ATMEL ATmega8 chip-sporting breadboard, and a massive brain. PSP users looking to do this themselves can find all of the steps at the pspfreak.de forums. Of course, it goes without saying that you should probably be somewhat comfortable with homebrew before trying this.

If you want to see it in action before attempting it, or you would like to know why someone would do this, check out some video past the break.

[Via Engadget]
Continue reading PSP mod integrates mouse support

PSP mod integrates mouse support originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 May 2009 15:00:00 EST. We know we've never wanted our mouse buttons to be more button-like and less flush with the surface of the device. This NES controller mouse is inspiring feelings in us we didn't even know we had -- as well as the quite familiar feeling of "loving NES controllers."

Too bad, then, that this mouse, the first to elicit an emotional response from us in recent memory, isn't real. Japanese publisher Daletto, owned by Capcom and Games Arena, have announced (via IGN) Street Fighter Online: Mouse Generation. The PC title will have you control your characters completely via the mouse: sliding left and right moves the character, slide up jumps and left- and right-clicks give different attacks. Special moves, as you may guess, come via making combinations of slides and clicks. There will be community features based around fighting online.

What also makes the game unique and bizarre (aside from the random cat in the above picture - perhaps it's omnipotent) is the ability to interchange body parts on your character. The game is reportedly about fighting Revoltech toys, which is a line of actual toys planned to be sold alongside the game. As IGN predicts, you could have the head and torso of Chun-Li, the arms of Zangief and the legs of Ryu (the gender identity issues are plentiful).

The game is expected to go into beta February or March, with full service coming in April. No word on a version for non-Japanese gamers.
Street Fighter Online ... with mouse controls originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 16 Jan 2008 22:00:00 EST. Promotional Consideration is a weekly feature about the Nintendo DS advertisements you usually flip past, change the channel on, or just tune out.

Commercials that work for European markets aren't always in-line with Nintendo of America's more traditional approach. Join us past the post break to sample a few of the edgier, more risqué TV adverts our friends across the Atlantic have been enjoying.
Continue reading Promotional Consideration: You Can't Do That On Television

Promotional Consideration: You Can't Do That On Television originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 19 Aug 2007 19:15:00 EST. Three of the cursors are animated, including the rotating blue ring as a loading cursor. To install, simply unzip and copy the folder to C:\Windows\Cursors, then head to the control panel under Mouse > Pointers and change each one individually. Download the cursors.
Wii cursor theme for Windows originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 15 Jun 2007 10:03:00 EST. That's roughly what it will take to open bidding on the mother of all Sega Saturn collections on eBay right now. Besides 256 games from all three regions, including rarities like Radiant Silvergun and Panzer Dragoon Saga, the auction includes three actual consoles (including a white one that can play burned games and VCDs), six controllers, memory cards, light guns, multitaps, a steering wheel and even a mouse. That's a lot of defunct Sega goodness right there.

If you're still balking at the price, consider that the winning bid includes free shipping to the U.S. from Australia. Because really, if you're gonna spend thousands of dollars on a classic system collection, the shipping is what will put you over the edge of reasonable expenditure.
Every Saturn game you could possibly want, and then some originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 14 Jun 2007 20:23:00 EST. In this video, the Wiimote is doing double-duty as a mouse here in World of Warcraft on Mac OSX. So far that means we have replacement mouse, game controller, TV smasher, web browser, whiteboard, weather forecaster and doorstop. What other uses will people unlock in the coming months? No one can say.

For now, sit back and enjoy the Wiimote in Warcraft, for once on a Mac before a PC. In fact, you can go buy a Wiimote on its own, no Wii required, and WoW it up in style. Now, a writer at ESReality seems to have solved this problem with an inventive setup that can compare mice objectively on their own merits.

By clamping a mouse over a controlled-speed turntable, the author has created a system to accurately gauge the exact speed at which a mouse goes from "perfect control" to malfunctioning randomness. How much sensitivity is necessary depends largely on your play style, but it goes without saying that a higher top-speed is generally preferable to a lower one.

When the final results were tabulated and weighted the overclocked Logitech MX500 reigned supreme, giving perfect control even when zipped along the surface at a blazing meter per second. If you're moving your mouse any faster than that, may we suggest looking into some sort of program for caffeine addiction.

[Via Digg]
Gaming mice get objective rankings originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 12 Dec 2006 14:15:00 EST. Today, TeamXbox received some prototype shots of the device as TeamXtender seems to be moving full speed ahead in development. TeamXtender is in the planning stages of creating an adapter that your Xbox 360 controller would plug into to allow full PS2 Dualshock support and would also allow keyboard/mouse connectivity. I'm in love with my sexy white controller, but would you be enticed by such an offering or are you like me and satisfied with the your current 360 controller?

[Thanks, SuicideNinja]
Go all Dualshock on your 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Nov 2006 19:00:00 EST. The announcement included news of a wireless Xbox 360 controller configured for PC (December; $59.95), which features an integrated jack for PC headsets -- the controller will also be compatible with the Xbox 360 console. Microsoft also unveiled two new mice: a new version of the IntelliMouse, IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0 (October; $39.95), and the Razer Precision powered Habu (October; $69.95), featuring a 2,000 DPI laser engine.

Microsoft also finalized Xbox Live Vision camera details, making official two separate bundles: 'Xbox Live Vision' (September 16; $39.99), which includes the camera, UNO & TotemBall, and a 1-month Xbox Live Gold Membership; and 'Xbox Live Video Chat Gold Kit' (September 16; $59.99), featuring everything in the $39.99 edition plus a 1-year Xbox Live Gold Membership, Robotron: 2084, and 200 Microsoft Points.
Leipzeig: Microsoft unveils wireless PC controller, 2 mice, and not much else originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 23 Aug 2006 11:25:00 EST.
