Today sees the US launch of Maxim and CNET apps, with the latter also coming to Canada, while <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/20/karaoke-streams-sing-along-songs-on-xbox-live-pay-per-hour/">Karaoke</a> and SkyDrive apps roll out worldwide (excluding Japan and United Arab Emirates for Karaoke).<br /><br />As shown above, SkyDrive lets you view pictures and videos stored on your Microsoft cloud, allowing Jenny to guffaw at memories of her sister's apparently hilarious wedding dress by watching the recording on her TV. Aww.<br /><br />Other Xbox 360 apps cropping up across the globe today include VEVO expanding to Spain, Italy, and France, and CinemaNow hopping over to Canada. Xbox spokesoldier Major Nelson also <a href="http://majornelson.com/2012/12/11/over-40-new-apps-coming-to-xbox-new-apps-launch-on-xbox-live-this-week/">detailed</a> a list of over 40 apps coming to various regions before spring 2013, including MTV, PBS, Flixster, and Vimeo apps for the US.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/11/xbox-live-adding-skydrive-cnet-maxim-karaoke-apps-in-n-ameri/">Xbox Live adding SkyDrive, CNET, Maxim, Karaoke apps in US today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 11 Dec 2012 14:00:00 EST. Discouraging "digital disrespect," "cruelty" and "sexting," among other things, A Thin Line will incentivize active community involvement by rewarding positive social actions with an exclusive <em>Angry Birds Space</em> level.<br /><br />It works like this: Once <em>Angry Birds Space</em> launches on March 22, players that post a "positive action" on <a href="http://www.athinline.org/drawyourline">MTV's Draw Your Line site</a> will be given a hint that leads them to a secret "Golden Egg" level in <em>Space</em>. A "positive action" can be something as simple as changing your email password to protect your identity, or as complex as hosting an anti-abuse event/rally. The whole site works on the honor system, though, so most positive actions will probably be lies, concocted solely to obtain the game's secret level.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/14/rovio-joins-mtvs-anti-bullying-campaign-rewards-participation/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rovio joins MTV's anti-bullying campaign, rewards participation with Angry Birds Space level</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/14/rovio-joins-mtvs-anti-bullying-campaign-rewards-participation/">Rovio joins MTV's anti-bullying campaign, rewards participation with Angry Birds Space level</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 14 Mar 2012 19:30:00 EST. In a new interview with <a href="http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2011/05/04/the-past-and-future-of-rock-band-dlc.aspx?PostPageIndex=1">Game Informer</a>, Chris Rigopulos, VP of strategy and business development at Harmonix, addresses the state of downloadable content for <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/rock-band-3"><em>Rock Band</em></a> now that the studio is no longer under MTV. Rigopulos said that Harmonix has "effectively severed all ties with MTV, and all proceeds from <em>Rock Band</em> belong to Harmonix."<br />
<br />
He explained that music selection for the <em>Rock Band</em> series had been a "collaborative effort between Harmonix and MTV," noting that most of the downloadable tracks we've seen this year were selected before Harmonix was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/23/rock-band-dev-harmonix-breaks-from-viacom-goes-independent-agai/">sold by Viacom</a> (last year). <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/04/ozzy-lady-gaga-foo-fighters-frampton-headed-to-rock-band-in-m/">This month's downloadable tracks</a>, said Rigopulos, will be the "first glimpse" at the music the company has secured without MTV. Rigopulos doesn't expect any "dramatic changes" to the music selection process, though he cheekily added, "I doubt you will see any more <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/06/rock-band-wiikly-journey-benatar-foo-fighters-spongebob-and/">SpongeBob SquarePants packs</a>."<br />
<br />
Rigopulous also discussed the overall success of <em>Rock Band's</em> DLC enterprise, noting that the series recently surpassed 100 million song downloads.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/04/harmonix-on-the-state-of-post-mtv-rock-band-dlc/">Harmonix on the state of post-MTV Rock Band DLC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 04 May 2011 18:20:00 EST. In a recent interview with <a href="http://www.industrygamers.com/news/rock-band-developer-says-it-had-to-carry-the-entire-publishing-infrastructure-of-mtv-games/">Industry Gamers</a>, Harmonix VP of Product Development Greg LoPiccolo remarked on the studio's time under the MTV Games banner. Though he explained he harbors no ill will towards the team's former publisher, he said MTV didn't have "a big enough publishing organization to achieve economies of scale." He added, "They had us, but essentially our games had to carry the entire publishing infrastructure of MTV games which was not particularly efficient."<br />
<br />
LoPiccolo said he's grateful for the partnership, explaining, "When they bought us we were a little developer and in collaboration with them we achieved a lot." Despite MTV's help in turning them into the studio they are today, LoPiccolo explained he wasn't worried about the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/23/rock-band-dev-harmonix-breaks-from-viacom-goes-independent-agai/">two parties' split</a>. "I think one of the things we've demonstrated to the world at large and to ourselves is that we have a demonstrated ability to make good stuff," he added. "And I think we had a confidence that somebody would see that and have that perspective."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/23/harmonix-says-it-had-to-carry-mtvs-publishing-operation/">Harmonix says it had to 'carry' MTV's publishing operation</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 23 Apr 2011 20:30:00 EST. Viacom has responded to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/21/harmonix-founders-ex-shareholders-sue-viacom/">claims this morning</a> from Harmonix shareholders that the company avoided paying out bonuses to the developers of the <em>Rock Band</em> series. Viacom of course <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/32151/Viacom_Denies_Harmonix_ExShareholders_Allegations_Says_Offers_Were_Spurned.php">denies it dodged any obligations</a>, and says instead that the representative for Harmonix's shareholders, Walter Winshall, was offered agreements that included big payouts for the developer but "spurned" those, hoping for a bigger reward later. That reward never came, says Viacom, and Winchell is allegedly lashing out with this lawsuit for not meeting his shareholders' expectations.<br />
<br />
That doesn't quite cover the other allegation in the lawsuit against Viacom, which claims that it <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/08/ea-rock-band-deal-with-viacom-only-through-fiscal-2010/">set up an agreement with EA</a> on the <em>Rock Band</em> brand that benefited its own interests rather than those of Harmonix (by doing things like trading advertising sales on MTV rather than passing on profits to the developers). Proof on that allegation, one way or the other, will have to come out in court -- if this lawsuit goes that far.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/21/viacom-denies-keeping-payments-from-harmonix/">Viacom denies keeping payments from Harmonix</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 21 Dec 2010 23:00:00 EST. At some point today, PS3 <em>Rock Band 3</em> users will be prompted to download a mandatory title update -- the Xbox 360 patch is coming "in the near future". The first of two planned updates resolves some persistent glitches in the game, including freezes that take place during the amp loading vignette and when messing around with eyebrows in the character creator. " All eyebrows are now safe," the <a href="http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=210000&amp;highlight=title+update">forum thread</a> assures us. <br />
<br />
Additionally, an exploit where players could constantly pause mid-song to inflate score has been addressed in the update. Now any performance during a song that's been paused multiple times won't have its score reported. Also, we reluctantly point out that one of the more dreaded issues, the PS3 keyboard audio glitch, is not included in today's update. Harmonix has <a href="http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=209942">acknowledged the issue</a> and is looking into a fix. <br />
<br />

If you'd rather play along with your own feather-haired avatar than merely listen to "It's My Life" on repeat, you'll be able to do so through <em>Rock Band</em>, as the album will be released as DLC soon after the <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/rock-band-3">Rock Band 3</a></em> launch.<br />
<br />
"Bon Jovi for us is one of our most requested artists," MTV's Paul DeGooyer told <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/41231/Bon-Jovi-signs-up-for-Rock-Band-3">MCV</a>. "We've had a couple of songs on disc" -- as we can attest, with "Livin' On a Prayer" an unusually frequent song in our random selections -- "but we've never done a vertical campaign like this with them."<br />
<br />
Harmonix confirmed the Bon Jovi DLC in a <a href="http://www.rockband.com/forums/showpost.php?s=9996712a079d077b9732b59f02116257&amp;p=4070597&amp;postcount=112">forum post</a>, with one caveat: "Don't expect a huge multi disc album release though, as the Surgeon General has determined that anything more than 12 tracks of Bon Jovi in a single pack could contain potentially dangerous levels of swoon when downloaded by women, and result in deadly amounts of 'good hair envy' in men." So it won't be the full two-disc "Ultimate Collection" version of the album.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">Details have been pretty scant on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rock-band-3"><em>Rock Band 3</em></a> so far, despite the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/10/mega64-gets-the-lowdown-on-rock-band-3s-new-logo/">best efforts of some</a>. That all changes today as USA Today dishes on the game's 25-key <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/tech/gaming/2010-06-10-rockband10_ST_N.htm">piano peripheral</a>, some of the <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/tech/gaming/2010-06-10-rockband10_VA_N.htm">new features</a> and even a <a href="http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gamehunters/post/2010/06/rock-band-3-the-songs-announced-so-far-/1">partial song list</a>, which we've got after the jump (Smash Mouth, guys? <em>Ballsy</em>.) along with some on-video ivory tickling.<br />
<br />
USA Today also fleshed out the "Pro" mode Ars Technica <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/26/report-rock-band-3-features-keytar-and-pro-mode/">had the scoop on</a> last month. As expected, the mode will endeavor to teach actual musical technique, either with the new keyboard, a three-cymbal upgrade for the drum kit or a hybrid controller/"full-sized, fully functional six-string Squier Stratocaster" made by Fender. Mad Catz is making a miniature Fender Mustang Pro controller for the mode too, but we're not going to miss the chance to play on instruments that don't make us look like sweaty giants.</div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/10/rock-band-3-keyboard-revealed-by-usa-today/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rock Band 3 keyboard revealed by USA Today</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/10/rock-band-3-keyboard-revealed-by-usa-today/">Rock Band 3 keyboard revealed by USA Today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 Jun 2010 08:47:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-beatles-rock-band"><em>The Beatles: Rock Band</em></a> may have been a critical success, but it never achieved the levels of commercial success MTV had hoped for in Europe. MTV general manager Scott Guthrie told <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/39103/MTV-expected-more-from-Rock-Band-in-Europe">MCV</a> that a combination of the bad economy and competition contributed to the game's undesirable performance. <br />
<br />
"We got caught in a few things that happened last year. It was a tough economy; there was a lot of competitive products out there, and I think <em>Beatles</em> probably had softer sales than it would have if some of those things weren't in play," he said. "Overall we were pleased with the sales. I think that we underestimated the competition and they took mind share away from us." This shouldn't be an issue for MTV's next game, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/green-day-rock-band"><em>Green Day: Rock Band</em></a>, the company <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/14/green-day-more-familiar-to-core-audience-than-beatles/">hopes</a>. <br />
<br />
The competition Guthrie talks about is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero-5"><em>Guitar Hero 5</em></a>, which did gangbusters in Europe. But while <em>Guitar Hero 5</em> was busy selfishly generating cash for Activision, <em>The Beatles: Rock Band</em> managed to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/28/the-beatles-rock-band-raises-217-780-for-charity-so-far/">generate a lot of cash for charity</a>, so that has to help MTV get through those cold nights. Right?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/21/mtv-admits-higher-sales-of-beatles-rock-band-were-expected/">MTV admits higher sales of Beatles: Rock Band were expected in Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 21 May 2010 15:30:00 EST. You know those mini-stage shows at amusement parks that are chock-full of budding young actors and actresses just biding their time until their big break except <em>oh wait they're in Ohio</em>? This summer, if you're at any Cedar Fair park, you'll have to work extra hard to avoid a similar sort of "attraction": <em>Rock Band Live</em>.<br />
<br />
We're going to read the description to you, but you have to promise to call your insurance agent and make sure your douche-chill coverage is up to date. Ready? The "high-energy, concert-like stage show features talented singers from across North America. But the cast will be missing one key piece of the show - YOU!" ... No, it really says "concert-like." We didn't add that.<br />
<br />
Because we care, we'll preserve you from the next bit of the release with a summary. Basically, you take time -- that you could be using to ride the Magnum XL-200 or eat a cinnamon roll as big as your head -- to play <em>Rock Band</em> for some bored carny. And your reward for a solid performance is getting to share the stage with the <em>Rock Band Live</em> crew (featuring no fewer than three future contestants in <em>Flavor of Love 7: Mummy Flav.)</em><br />
<br />
The show will be at Cedar Point and Canada's Wonderland all summer, though the other Cedar Fair parks will be randomly subjected to a touring company at intervals throughout the season. Think of it: A whole troupe of people who couldn't nail down a spot in the <em>permanent</em> <em>Rock Band Live</em>. To them, <em>Rock Band Live</em> at Canada's Wonderland is "the big show." We'll leave you in peace to swallow a razor blade or something while you mull that little gem over.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/02/cedar-fair-teams-with-mtv-for-rock-band-live/">Cedar Fair teams with MTV for Rock Band Live</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 02 Mar 2010 11:15:00 EST. While Activision may be <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/10/activision-severely-cutting-music-game-releases-in-2010/">moving away</a> from heaping artist-centric <em>Guitar Hero</em><em> </em>games on the market, it appears <em>Rock Band</em> is sliding in there to fill the void. According to a story in the <a href="http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-ca-hendrix14-2010feb14,0,7578185.story">L.A. Times</a>, Jimi Hendrix stepsister Janie (who also controls his estate) says that a <em>Rock Ban</em>d game based on the legendary guitarist is slated to arrive before year's end.<br />
<br />
We know that the officially announced <em>Green Day: Rock Band</em> won't be <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/21/green-day-rock-band-wont-be-the-only-rock-band-in-2010/">the only franchise release</a> this year, so <em>Hendrix: Rock Guy</em> is definitely a possibility. But the mainstream press is bad enough about confusing <em>Rock Band</em> and <em>Guitar Hero</em> that we'll hold off on placing our pre-orders until we've heard something official.<br />
<br />
Wow, either the L.A. Times is wrong or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/18/rumor-jimi-hendrix-edition-of-guitar-hero-in-the-works/">Slash is wrong</a>. Whoever wins, <em>we lose</em>.<br />
<br />
[<strong>Update: </strong>We just heard back from a Harmonix spokesperson, and there isn't a standalone product in the works. The official statement: "While we have not made any official announcements regarding Jimi Hendrix and Rock Band, we are excited to say that we are in discussions to bring more of his music to our platform. Stay tuned."]<br />

During an investor conference call, EA execs revealed that the publisher's deal with Viacom (the company that owns MTV, Harmonix, <em>Rock Band</em> and maybe you as well) is only active through fiscal year 2010 (which ends March 31). <br />
<br />
Presumably the deal somehow includes the yet-to-be-released <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/green-day-rock-band"><em>Green Day: Rock Band</em></a> -- but EA's unlikely to <em>announce</em> any more <em>Rock Band</em> games until it knows it has the license locked down for another year.<br />

Even though John, Paul, George and Ringo have been rocking the disc tray of your favorite console with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-beatles-rock-band"><em>The Beatles: Rock Band</em></a>, its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/16/beatles-rock-band-sales-exceeding-expectations-viacom-says/">expectation-exceeding</a> sales haven't helped boost overall <em>Rock Band</em> sales. Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman told <a href="http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gamehunters/post/2009/11/viacom-says-beatles-strong-but-rock-band-growth-is-slow/1?csp=34">USA Today</a> the "economics of our <em>Rock Band</em> franchise are improving, though not as quickly as we'd like." There's still hope that <em>Rock Band</em> could at least break even or show a small profit, though Viacom CFO Tom Dooley said that will depend entirely on the franchise's performance this holiday season.<br /><br />Despite tanking sales, the music genre still remains <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/12/music-game-sales-down-46-still-third-best-selling-genre/">one of the best in the industry</a> and <em>The Beatles: Rock Band</em> shows us that the right approach could still determine financial success in the space. Its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/19/september-npd-obviously-destined-to-sell-tons/">September debut</a> was very fortuitous and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/20/beatles-rock-band-bests-guitar-hero-5-in-u-s-sept-sales/">it even managed to best <em>Guitar Hero 5</em></a> in the US -- which not only <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/11/buy-guitar-hero-5-get-guitar-hero-van-halen-for-free/">came with a free game</a>, but is also one of the most recognizable brands to the mainstream.<br /> <br /> <a href="http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gamehunters/post/2009/11/viacom-says-beatles-strong-but-rock-band-growth-is-slow/1?csp=34">Source</a> - USA Today<br /> <a href="http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=85242&amp;p=quarterlyEarnings">Source</a> - Viacom earnings report<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/04/viacom-the-beatles-rock-band-sales-strong-overall-rb-growth-s/">Viacom: The Beatles: Rock Band sales strong, overall RB growth slow</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 04 Nov 2009 20:29:00 EST. According to <a href="http://www.patentarcade.com/2009/10/back-on-stage-in-guitar-herogibson-suit.html">Patent Arcade</a>, Harmonix and a group of retailers have asked a Tennessee court to continue proceedings -- of the case against them.<br /><br />Why is Harmonix engaging in this seemingly self-destructive (but not in the cool rock star way) behavior? When the USPTO looked into the patent again, it changed the definition of "musical instrument" to include the characteristics of being "adapted for making musical sounds" and "the instrument audio signal comprising an electrical signal output by the musical instrument that varies in response to operation of the instrument by the user of the system." <br /><br />Harmonix apparently believes that because of this new definition, and because of the precedent set by Gibson's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/25/activision-and-gibson-settle-guitar-hero-patent-lawsuit/"><em>other</em> case</a>, against Activision, the case will go in its favor in the end. If the stay is lifted, Harmonix will then file a motion for summary judgment of non-infringement.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/21/harmonix-calls-for-an-encore-in-gibson-patent-case/">Harmonix calls for an encore in Gibson patent case</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 21 Oct 2009 09:15:00 EST. While the idea of getting wet at the movies doesn't sound all that great (wet clothes and air conditioning don't mix, people!), the prospect of a <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wet/">Wet</a> </em>movie is certainly something we can get behind. That's just what voice of Rubi Malone Eliza Dushku proposed during an interview with <a href="http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2009/10/08/exclusive-eliza-dushku-may-work-on-live-action-wet-movie/">MTV</a>, stating that the game "maybe could turn into a live-action Dushku vehicle."<br /><br />Of course, it's best to keep in mind that there aren't any actual plans yet; Dushku isn't confirming things are in motion to make a live-action <em>Wet</em> film a reality, rather she wouldn't mind playing Rubi Malone in the film if it ever happens. We wouldn't mind it, either -- it'd give her a chance to make up for her <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/15/review-wet/">underwhelming performance</a> in the game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/08/eliza-dushku-interested-in-live-action-wet/">Eliza Dushku interested in live-action Wet </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 Oct 2009 23:40:00 EST. However, now that <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/the-beatles-rock-band">The Beatles</a> have done it and people are playing their game on the morning talk shows, <em>everything has changed</em>.<br />
<br />
"We definitely would like to be in there, but we felt some of the compromises weren't what we wanted," Adam Clayton told USA Today. "That could change. I love the idea that that's where people are getting music, and we'd love to be in that world."<br />
<br />
Evidently the representation of the band was the issue the first time. "What The Beatles have done, where the animation is much more representative of them, is what we're interested in, rather than the one-size-fits-all animation. We didn't want to be caricatured." Fans looking forward to singing "Lemon" in an unlockable <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoo_TV_Tour#Mr._MacPhisto">Mr. MacPhisto</a> costume should be glad it's <em>The Beatles: Rock Band</em> the group saw, and not <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero-5,kurt-cobain"><em>Guitar Hero 5</em></a>.<br />

If you plow halfway through <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-beatles-rock-band">The Beatles: Rock Band</a> </em>today, you'll notice that all the songs taking place in a studio setting (as opposed to The Ed Sullivan Show or Shea Stadium, for example) feature really lovely animations, which Harmonix calls "dreamscapes," inspired by the song they accompany. The developer tells us that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/19/the-beatles-rock-band-album-dlc-priced-dated-detailed/">DLC albums arriving in the coming months</a> will receive similar treatment.<br /> <br /> "DLC songs which don't end up in historical venues will have custom dreamscapes, yes," said Dare Matheson Lead Artist on the game at Harmonix. "There will be visual themes and elements that will stretch from the on-disc dreamscapes into the DLC dreamscapes, but everyone is custom, unique, and fully-crafted for the song it will accompany. It's a bargain!" At the same $2-per-song price as regular 'ol <em>Rock Band</em> DLC, we can't help but agree.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/09/the-beatles-rock-band-dlc-to-include-original-dreamscapes/">The Beatles: Rock Band DLC to include original dreamscapes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 Sep 2009 15:16:00 EST. As with other <em>Rock Band</em> games, how much fun you're having is directly proportionate to how much you enjoy the songs, and though you're absolutely entitled not to like The Beatles, it's pretty clear at this point in history that you'd be in the minority.<br />
<br />
So, you'll find me talking largely in terms of presentation for this review, since (a) that's really the meat of what you're buying here and (b) it's absolutely, jaw-droppingly, top-to-bottom stunning.<br />

Believe it or not, things weren't always going so well for <em>Guitar Hero</em> and <em>Rock Band</em> franchise developers <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/harmonix">Harmonix</a>. Starting out in 1995 as a "music tech" company, founders Alex Rigopulos and Eran Egozy took four years of "misstarts and product concepts that never made it anywhere" before they had any success. Talking to <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2009/09/03/smallbusiness/harmonix_rock_band_startup_story/index.htm?postversion=2009090313">CNN Money</a>, the two detail five years of strange, misguided, or ill-informed ideas that <strike>eventually</strike> <em>somehow</em> lead to <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-beatles-rock-band">The Beatles: Rock Band</a></em>.<br /><br />First up: "The Axe," something that Rigopulos describes as "a joystick music improvisation system." In so many words, you moved the joystick around and various sounds were produced. Unsurprisingly, only 300 were sold -- "a horrendous failure that led to a painful lesson," Rigopulos says. "You can't really build a business on an entertainment experience that only keeps people entertained for 15 minutes." Second, the two tried breaking into the (at the time) $10 billion Japanese karaoke market ... and met with resounding failure once again. <br /><br />Luckily for us, lessons learned overseas came back with the duo and Harmonix became a game company. Rigopulos and Egozy quickly changed their company's focus from "music tech" to "gaming," creating<em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/frequency">Frequency</a></em> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/amplitude"><em>Amplitude</em></a> soon after. Though the games didn't directly lead to the financial success achieved later with <em>Guitar Hero</em> and <em>Rock Band</em> (<em>GH</em> didn't get off the ground until RedOctane approached Harmonix in the early oughts), both helped the now major developer to get a foot in the door.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/03/harmonix-founders-detail-the-companys-failure-ridden-road-to-su/">Harmonix founders detail the company's failure-ridden road to success</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 03 Sep 2009 21:15:00 EST. Nothing says 'casual' like sitting down and watching a program dedicated to your hobby. Which is exactly why ex-MTV Europe boss Peter Einstein is working on bringing "Game Face" to Bravo, a show not about watching <em>silly things</em> like game reviews, previews, and interviews, but about watching the games themselves -- <em>unfiltered</em>, if you will.<br /><br />"From what we've seen in the past a lot of the focus has been more outside of the games, with presenter reviews, stats, interviews with creators and only a bit about the games themselves - as one assumed that you only 'play' games you can't 'watch' them," Einstein told <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/35313/Ex-MTV-boss-targets-games-TV">MCV UK</a>. "We feel this concept provides a fun, entertaining TV event which is appealing mostly to the casual gamer." And us? We're not so sure that casual gamers are going to be on board for simply watching gameplay of games rather than, you know, <em>playing</em> them.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/09/game-face-launches-on-bravo-aimed-at-casual-gamers/">'Game Face' launches on Bravo, aimed at casual gamers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 09 Aug 2009 11:30:00 EST. Matchbox Twenty front man Rob Thomas, currently promoting his second solo album, told <a href="http://weblogs.variety.com/the_cut_scene/2009/07/rob-thomas-to-rock-band-call-me.html">The Cut Scene Blog</a> that he "obviously" wants his music in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Rock-Band-2">Rock Band</a></em>; however, he hasn't been asked. While Thomas admits he isn't much of a gamer, he does have an 11-year-old son who enjoys rocking out to MTV and Harmonix's latest music title.<br /><br />"There's something great about watching [my son] playing a Pixies song with me on <em>Rock Band</em>," he said. Thomas added, while <em>Rock Band</em> showcases the familiar world of music to children, the game has the ability to expose younger audiences to a wide "assortment of music." According to Thomas (above, center) -- who has become known <a href="http://weblogs.variety.com/technotainment/2009/07/rob-thomas-rock-star-digital-marketing-guru.html">for using new technology</a> to promote his work -- he would welcome the opportunity to make the jump into his son's game of choice. We always welcome new music into our music games, but Thomas needs to wait his turn. You may not know this, but April is actually the biggest month of the year for banjo sales in the US. You see, the annual Jugband Jamboree takes place in April each year, across various states in the country, but nobody attended this year thanks to those darn <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero"><em>Guitar Heroes</em></a>,<em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rock-band">Rock Bands</a></em>, and <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/tag/singstar"><em>Singstars</em></a>.<br /><br />A new report (via <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/25-million-us-gamers-played-music-games-in-april">GI.biz</a>) came up with the data, based on research done by firm Interpret. In fact, aside from the staggering 25 million US gamers that got down with one music game or another, data showed that these gamers purchased 67% more CDs than those who didn't enjoy rhythm-based games. In addition, 29% of these wannabe rockers actually downloaded or streamed a music video in the past three months (compared to the 15% that partook overall), and 45% listened to music via a social network (versus 32% overall). So, as much as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/23/jack-white-learning-about-music-through-guitar-hero-is-depress/">celebrities like to bash these kinds of games</a>, it's helping more folks get into music, which, to us, is a good thing.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/26/report-25-million-played-music-games-in-april-banjo-sales-at-a/">Report: 25 million played music games in April, banjo sales at all-time low</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 26 Jun 2009 17:45:00 EST. You might have already seen this at the MTV Movie Awards, but if you're the sort of person that's sworn off the MTV Movie Awards entirely (perfectly understandable) then we'd like to present <em>Doubt: The Video Game</em> as imagined by The Lonely Island. Check out the hot, 16-bit action after the break.<br /><br />Interesting side note: This video was made in conjunction with <a href="http://www.fatalfarm.com/main.html">Fatal Farm</a>, the crew responsible for a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/05/ultra-violent-timeshift-commercial/">bitching <em>TimeShift </em>ad</a> and one of the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmpAx8Z5z40">funniest things on the whole internet</a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/26/the-lonely-island-plays-doubt-the-video-game/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Lonely Island plays 'Doubt: The Video Game'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/26/the-lonely-island-plays-doubt-the-video-game/">The Lonely Island plays 'Doubt: The Video Game'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 26 Jun 2009 01:00:00 EST. "Have video games totally taken over your life? Is your game play increasingly getting out of control? Have your friends or family confronted you about your gaming habit? How about your marriage or personal relationships - are they being affected? Is it difficult to balance work and gaming time? Do you sometimes skip doing homework or household responsibilities to play? Have you played video games as a way of escaping your problems? Has your game playing habit become so encompassing that you may need to go to rehab to kick it? If you can identify with any of the above, MTV wants to hear from you." -- Actual MTV casting call, <a href="http://www.realitywanted.com/call/4823-mtv-true-life-wants-to-know-are-you-addicted-to-gaming-casting-call">in verbatim</a>.<br /><br />While we agree video game addiction can be a problem, especially if it gets in the way of your social life, we doubt appearing on a <a href="http://www.mtv.com/ontv/dyn/truelife/series.jhtml">MTV reality program</a> is the best solution for shaking the habit. If you don't want your 15 minutes of fame, consider taking the Joystiq Two-Step Plan to Stop Playing Games[TM]. Step one: buy <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/27/review-terminator-salvation/"><em>Terminator Salvation</em></a>. Step two: Play it. You'll learn to hate games in minutes! Pretty soon, you'll want to go outside and make friends -- all without the embarrassment of being on the same network as <a href="http://www.mtv.com/ontv/dyn/tila_tequila/series.jhtml">Tila Tequila</a>. Without the band present, it just looks like the show is <em>really</em> proud of that drum riser.<br /><br />We're currently checking with Harmonix to verify whether you can <em>play</em> on this set in the actual game. With all the work that went into modeling it, it would be pretty silly if it <em>didn't</em> show up in the game. We would, then, also expect at least <em>one</em> of the songs performed at that "really big shew" to be playable: "All My Loving," "'Til There Was You," "She Loves You," and "I Want to Hold Your Hand."<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-beatles-rock-band/">The Beatles: Rock Band</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-beatles-rock-band/#2048799"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/ludwig-drums-1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-beatles-rock-band/#1536077"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/wiiguitar1_front_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-beatles-rock-band/#1536076"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/ps3guitar2_front_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-beatles-rock-band/#1536075"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/x360guitar1_front_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-beatles-rock-band/#1536074"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/x360guitar2_front_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/20/the-beatles-rock-band-site-unveils-ed-sullivan-studio/">The Beatles: Rock Band site unveils Ed Sullivan studio</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 May 2009 10:30:00 EST. This week's Wii <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/rock-band-2"><em>Rock Band</em></a> DLC offering delivers a stack of new tunes for the popular music game that spans multiple generations. Like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/11/rock-band-wiikly-steely-dan-disturbed-costello-replacements/#continued">last week</a>, Haromix delivers 25 new tracks from the old school sounds of The Allman Brothers Band to the headbanging vibes of Disturbed. Regardless of your style, there is surely something for you then the tracks go live tomorrow (May 19). As usual, each track is priced at 200 Wii Points ($2). The full track list can be found after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/18/rock-band-wiikly-franz-ferdinand-grateful-dead-and-more/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rock Band Wiikly: Franz Ferdinand, Grateful Dead and more</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/18/rock-band-wiikly-franz-ferdinand-grateful-dead-and-more/">Rock Band Wiikly: Franz Ferdinand, Grateful Dead and more</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 18 May 2009 19:15:00 EST. MTV and Hollywood movie baron <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/jerry-bruckheimer/">Jerry Bruckheimer</a> made their union official this morning, lifting the 17-month shroud of secrecy off their <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/19/mtvs-next-big-thing-bruckheimer-teams-up-for-game-studio/">joint venture</a>, oh-so-creatively dubbed Jerry Bruckheimer Games. The new studio will be steered by former Microsoft exec and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo-3">Halo 3</a></em> executive producer, Jim Veevaert, as the company's president of production. Veevaert will share the wheel with Jay Cohen, who <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/02/rumor-ubisoft-exec-takes-job-at-mtv-jerry-bruckheimer-game-vent/">joined the studio in March</a>, his role now revealed as the company's president of development.<br /><br />What Cohen and company will be developing exactly, however, remains a mystery, with the studio saying only that it will create original IPs that "convey and reflect the high standards of entertainment value set by Jerry Bruckheimer." For fans of shaky cams and explosions, one thing's for certain -- finally there's a studio out there with your best interests at heart.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/12/jerry-bruckheimer-games-explodes-onto-scene-halo-3-exec-on-boar/">Jerry Bruckheimer Games explodes onto scene, Halo 3 exec on board </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 May 2009 07:30:00 EST. At Joystiq Headquarters, we're all about bumpin' the latest Fiddy track and tossing around the ol' crystal skull (that's a basketball to you). So it should come as no surprise that we're psyched for the news that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/24/50-cent-to-start-reading-joystiq/">avid Joystiq reader 50 Cent</a> is hoping for a sequel to his <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/24/joystiq-review-50-cent-blood-on-the-sand/">well-reviewed</a> third-person shooter, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/50-cent-blood-on-the-sand/"><em>50 Cent: Blood on the Sand</em></a>.<br />
<br />
According to an interview with <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1610494/20090501/50_cent.jhtml">MTV News</a>, our favorite Vitamin Water investor responds rather positively when asked about the possibility of a sequel, saying, "I'm hoping we'll be able to do it ... with the success of this actual project, we'll try to do it again." Furthermore, though he's stated it before, he's more interested in doing future games that don't revolve around his persona, telling the interviewer, "I'd like to be a part of designing and marketing a video game I'm not actually in." And what of that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/24/50-cent-wants-to-make-a-saints-row-movie-or-die-tryin/"><em>Saint's Row</em> movie</a> you were optioning, Mr. Cent? "I was trying to option the rights, [but] the more we talk about it, the more expensive it will get," he says. Those "bigass chains" can get expensive, can't they?<br />
<br />
Hit the break for the full, "actual" video (only for those in the US unfortunately, per MTV.com restrictions -- sorry!).<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/04/50-cent-wants-to-make-blood-on-the-sand-sequel-original-ip/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>50 Cent wants to 'make' Blood on the Sand sequel, original IP</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/04/50-cent-wants-to-make-blood-on-the-sand-sequel-original-ip/">50 Cent wants to 'make' Blood on the Sand sequel, original IP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 04 May 2009 22:00:00 EST. <br />If you've worried about your youngsters being exposed to the evils of rock music, worry no longer: <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/lego-rock-band">LEGO Rock Band</a> </em>is coming this holiday season on PS3, 360, Wii and DS to deliver us all from said evil. The game, currently being developed by TT Games and Harmonix, will use all the existing <em>Rock Band</em> and <em>Guitar Hero </em>peripherals.<br /><br />The family-focused version of the game will allow you to customize your "minifigure avatars" along with your road crew and managers. The kid-friendly song list hasn't been fully disclosed, but we know it'll include:<br />
<ul>
    <li>Blur: "Song 2"</li>
    <li>Carl Douglas: "Kung Fu Fighting"</li>
    <li>Europe: "The Final Countdown"</li>
    <li>Good Charlotte: "Boys and Girls"</li>
    <li>Pink: "So What" </li>
</ul>
So, <em>LEGO</em>s or <em>Beatles</em>, who's getting your <em>Rock Band </em>dollar this year?<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/lego-rock-band/">Lego Rock Band</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/lego-rock-band/#1508107"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/lrb_screen11_wave3-1024a_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/lego-rock-band/#1508106"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/lrb_screen09_crop_wave3-1024a_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/lego-rock-band/#1508105"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/lrb_screen05_wave3-1024a_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/lego-rock-band/#1508104"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/lego-rock-band-logo-1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/lego-rock-band/#1507884"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/lego-rock-band-1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/21/lego-rock-band-real-coming-holiday-2009/">Lego Rock Band real, coming Holiday 2009</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 21 Apr 2009 09:57:00 EST. In the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/breakin-the-law-2-electric-boogaloo/">pending lawsuit</a> between <em>DJ Hero</em> publisher <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/activision">Activision</a> and <em>Scratch: The Ultimate DJ</em> co-publishers Genius Products and Numark, all we've heard are each sides' <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/14/scratch-the-ultimate-dj-developer-sues-activision/">allegations</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/16/activision-responds-to-scratch-lawsuit-court-denies-restraining-order/">condemnations</a> of the other. What we haven't heard, however, was the long and messy tale leading up to the current state of things between former <em>Scratch</em> developer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/7-studios">7 Studios</a> (now owned by Activision), Genius Products and, apparently, Brash Entertainment. Yes -- <em>that</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/02/brash-goes-out-with-a-fascinating-bang/">Brash Entertainment</a>.<br /><br />According to <a href="http://weblogs.variety.com/the_cut_scene/2009/04/scr.html">The Cut Scene</a>, <em>Scratch</em> began development in 2007, allegedly by 7 Studios and Brash Entertainment. In summer of the same year, Brash decided to focus on licensed properties and sold off the IP to Genius Products. The piece further alleges that by late last year, Genius Products was having financial problems and was not so much being courted by major publishers (including MTV, EA, Ubisoft and, yes, Activision) as it was trying to sell off a seemingly <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxic_asset">toxic asset</a>. If The Cut Scene's anonymous sources are to be believed, there's a lot more going on here than it would seem.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/17/the-sordid-history-of-scratch-the-ultimate-dj/">The sordid history of Scratch: The Ultimate DJ</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 17 Apr 2009 13:55:00 EST. According to an email sent out to customers, the Bundle will include a a <a href="http://www.hofner.com/">H&ouml;fner bass</a>, "The Beatles-inspired and Ludwig-branded <em>Rock Band</em> drums with classic pearl finish, a metal kick pedal and a vintage replica drumhead," a microphone and stand, as well as "additional special content." We're guessing that the drum set's careful description means it'll be an embellished <em>Rock Band 2</em> drum set, rather than an accurate replica of Ludwig drums. You can get an idea of what it's supposed to look like at the game's <a href="http://www.thebeatlesrockband.com/">website</a>. <br /><br />And we're <em>also</em> guessing that EA couldn't get the rights to a <a href="http://www.rickenbacker.com/">Rickenbacker</a> guitar. Even if it <em>is</em> Paul McCartney's bass, the inclusion of a bass and no guitar seems odd!<br /><br />The email teases an upcoming <em>The Beatles: Rock Band</em> Pre-order Club, which enables members to "receive breaking news and access to exclusive game elements, including art and behind-the-scenes footage." You know, if you're a <em>huge</em> fan of ... pre-ordering.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/14/the-beatles-rock-band-limited-edition-bundle-to-contain-replica-bas/">The Beatles: Rock Band Limited Edition bundle to contain replica bass, drums</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Apr 2009 09:25:00 EST. The game will be available in the US and Europe on June 9, making this the first <em>Rock Band</em> game to be released in both regions during the same six-month period on a Sony system. There's no word on a European price yet, but Americans will need to part with $39.99 in order to grab the game.<br />

Jim Sonzero, the cinematic director who worked on soon-to-be-released <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5">Resident Evil 5</a> </em>told MTV that he's in talks with Capcom to develop a live-action film based on one of the company's properties. No young upstart, Sonzero has worked on commercials and a feature film, <em>Wes Craven's Pulse</em> (presumably, <em>Jim Sonzero's Pulse </em>lacked a little marquee punch).<br /><br />Sonzero's not talking specific IPs, so we'll leave it to you in the comments to speculate. Here, we'll start. Vin Diesel + blue armor + an arm that is a gun = box office <em>gold</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/09/resident-evil-5-cinematic-director-in-talks-to-make-capcom-film/">Resident Evil 5 cinematic director in talks to make Capcom film</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 09 Mar 2009 15:18:00 EST. Okay, so it <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2008/10/30/mtv-and-apple-corp-announce-beatles-rock-band-game/"><em>will</em> be a <em>Rock Band</em> game</a>. Apple Corps LTD., Harmonix and MTV Games have announced that rock music's dream cast, The Beatles, will be reduced to multicolored note charts on 9/9/09, when the "<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-beatles">The Beatles: Rock Band</a></em>" launches worldwide on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii. <br /><br />The "unprecedented, experiential progression through and celebration of the music and artistry of The Beatles" will allow players to tackle a cavalcade of culturally monumental songs via mic, drums and guitars, all included in a Limited Edition Premium bundle for $250 (all platforms) and "modeled after instruments used by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr throughout their career." Standalone guitars will also be available ($100), as will separate game discs ($60, all platforms) for those already surrounded by <em>Instrument Protagonist</em> equipment. According to the press release, <em>The Beatles: Rock Band</em> will be compatible with all prior <em>Rock Band</em> instruments and "other current music-based game peripherals." <br /><br />And now we wait until September. God, we hope the person behind the store counter is named Jude. It's going to be SO funny when we ask for a copy.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> Speaking to an MTV representative, we confirmed that despite the "collaborative decision" to append the <em>Rock Band</em> brand, <em>The Beatles</em> will remain a "custom, standalone, dedicated game experience." MTV and Harmonix are not willing to discuss matters regarding DLC or song importation yet.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/05/the-beatles-rock-band-launching-worldwide-on-9-9-09/">The Beatles: Rock Band launching worldwide on 9/9/09</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 05 Mar 2009 10:22:00 EST. Jay Cohen, who <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/01/north-american-ubisoft-exec-jay-cohen-departs/">recently left</a> his position as North American VP of publishing at <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/ubisoft">Ubisoft</a>, is apparently taking the reigns of MTV and Jerry Bruckheimer's ever-gestating video game initiative. <a href="http://weblogs.variety.com/the_cut_scene/2009/03/jay-cohen-running-jerry-bruckheimers-video-game-company.html">The Cut Scene</a> reports that "numerous sources" have confirmed that Cohen has taken a job at the studio formed by the two media giants.<br /><br />This is actually the first murmuring we've heard about the joint venture since it was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/19/mtvs-next-big-thing-bruckheimer-teams-up-for-game-studio/">announced 15 months ago</a>. Imagine, if you will, that you have entered a library. Imagine further that a librarian approaches and, upon meeting you, asks, "Would you like to play <em>Rock Band</em>?" Would you think that this librarian was A) the greatest librarian in the history of librarians or B) wasting taxpayer money? If you chose B, you appear to agree with Omaha, Nebraska's Action 3 News, which recently <a href="http://www.action3news.com/Global/story.asp?S=9900719&amp;nav=menu550_2">filed a report</a> about a group of local librarians using state funds to purchase <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/rock-band">Rock Band</a> </em>for its gaming workshops. Worse still, the librarians even had the <em>audacity</em> to film themselves assembling and playing the game -- during work hours -- and <em>then</em> uploaded the results to YouTube.<br /><br />Indeed, the offense was so egregious that Nebraska State Auditor Mike Foley launched an investigation into the matter, the results of which will be looked over by a group appointed by Governor Dave Heineman. To think that a library would purchase video games in order to attract more young people -- something <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/01/ohio-library-now-loaning-video-games/">many</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/11/nov-15-is-national-gaming-day-at-your-library/">libraries</a> are starting to do -- and then promote it via YouTube, where plenty of young people are likely to see it, boggles the mind. It's practically unconscionable.<br /><br />Check out the incriminating YouTube video after the break (which also includes a little <span style="font-style: italic;">DDR</span> action).<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/26/coolest-librarians-ever-in-trouble-for-playing-rock-band/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Coolest librarians EVER in trouble for playing Rock Band</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/26/coolest-librarians-ever-in-trouble-for-playing-rock-band/">Coolest librarians EVER in trouble for playing Rock Band</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Feb 2009 05:00:00 EST. Harmonix and MTV have announced plans to donate a minimum of $50,000 to the <a href="http://www.starlight.org/home.aspx">Starlight Children's Foundation</a>, an organization that helps seriously ill children cope with disease or life-altering injuries (readers may recall <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2008/09/17/wii-fans-wish-come-true-nintendo-fun-center-in-action/">Nintendo partnering with Starlight</a> last year). In addition to the cash donation, Harmonix will be donating over 650 <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rock-band"><em>Rock Band</em></a> bundles to the organization for use in partner hospitals and at its Great Escape events, which will give Starlight children and their families "a behind-the-scenes look at Rock Band, a chance to meet the game's creators, a sneak peak at new content and other once-in-a-lifetime experiences." <br /><br />The partnership will also allow Starlight families to attend the <em>Rock Band</em> Tour. Paula Van Ness, CEO of Starlight Children's Foundation, said that the games will provide "distractive entertainment therapy for thousands of seriously ill children" and expects the games to have "a powerful, therapeutic effect."<br /><br />Protip for partner hospitals: Stay away from "In Bloom." That whole "sell the kids for food" thing might not go over very well.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/20/harmonix-mtv-donate-money-and-rock-band-to-starlight-childrens/">Harmonix, MTV donate money and Rock Band to Starlight Children's Foundation</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 20 Feb 2009 12:30:00 EST. After MTV <a href="http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2009/02/02/blatant-peggle-clone-hits-iphone-before-peggle/">reported</a> yesterday that some low-grade <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/peggle"><em>Peggle</em></a> clone, called <em>Peggie,</em> was being distributed in the iPhone app store, some associates of kingpin PopCap Games decided to step in. Resorting to a simple cease-and-desist order, PopCap had JSeuss Software <a href="http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2009/02/03/peggie-becomes-pegs-in-space/">change</a> the name of its baking soda-based product to <em>Pegs in Space</em>.<br />
<br />
PopCap Games has made <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/28/popcap-sales-up-85-drug-cartel-revenues-down/">millions off the casual games trade</a>, creating thousands of <em>Zuma</em> whores and <em>Bejeweled</em> babies. The attack on <em>Peggie</em> probably has to do with the cartel's plans to launch <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/23/rumor-peggle-on-iphone/"><em>Peggle</em> on iPhone</a> within a couple of months. PopCap needs to make sure the addicts keep hitting the good stuff.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/03/peggle-turf-war-causes-peggie-to-change-its-name/">Peggle turf war causes 'Peggie' to change its name</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Feb 2009 12:50:00 EST.
