The app features content from many of NBC's various news programs, including Meet the Press, Hardball, Dateline, Nightly News and the Rachel Maddow Show. The NBC News app is available now on the Xbox Live Marketplace.

We know what you're thinking: "News? On my television?" Microsoft's streaming television service in the US is still in its infancy, but the company reportedly has plans to greatly expand it in the coming months, even introducing its own programming. Bloomberg reports that Microsoft is currently on the hunt for a television exec to handle said original programming, with two ex-NBC suits named as potential candidates (Marc Graboff and Jess Gaspin).

No details are given on what kind of content the company might provide, though the report says it will be paired with the already existing streaming offerings. Microsoft already dips its toe into original programming via the Xbox Live Dashboard (Major's Minute, Xbox 101, etc.), and hosts partners for promotional tie-in videos (IGN) alongside streaming services like Crackle, HBO Go, and the Zune Marketplace. The company also worked in the past with NBC on the network "MSNBC," though Microsoft later exited the partnership. The Redmond, WA-based company isn't offering any comment at this time regarding the report.
Bloomberg: Microsoft to create its own TV programming for Xbox Live originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 Dec 2011 15:00:00 EST. According to the source, the project is being helmed by TJ "Ocman" Allard, a former Ubisoft designer. His co-host is Audrey Cleo, who currently works on Qore. The team is currently editing footage recorded at E3 for the pilot, including interviews with Kinect's Kudo Tsunoda and Mortal Kombat's Ed Boon.

Specific details, like a show name and distribution, have yet to be settled upon. However, our source says that the working title is currently "Game On." The pilot -- planned for primetime -- may even premiere as early as next month. If you happen to know more about this project, feel free to send us a tip.
It's probably fair to say that few things would excite internet dweebs like us more than television and film streaming service Hulu arriving on a gaming console already connected to the internet and, more importantly, to our televisions. Tech site Gear Live has a rumor that Hulu streaming functionality is coming to the Xbox 360, to be announced at this year's E3. 1UP has a similar rumor that reads "a Hulu application for the Xbox 360 definitely exists" -- unfortunately, said application is allegedly being held back by rights issues with Hulu's content owners (read: NBC, CBS, etc.).

Both sites source an anonymous person "close to Microsoft" as the origin of the rumor -- perhaps embittered soon-to-be ex-employees Robbie Bach and J. Allard have hit the streets with huge leaks?! Yeah, we don't think so either. Regardless, we've reached out to Microsoft for the inevitable "We don't comment on rumors or speculation," but we'll let you know what the company officially says of the rumors if we hear back.

Update: Microsoft responded with "We don't comment on rumor or speculation." Surprise!
Guess who's been playing ModNation Racers before its release? Yes, video game bloggers. But what about some more interesting people? The cast of NBC's sitcom Community have been getting their hands on Sony's upcoming PS3 (and PSP) racer. Three members of Greendale Community College (including Chevy Chase!) can be seen playing three-player split-screen in the brief clip available on Hulu (embedded after the break, available only for US readers).

So, how did the cast of this TV series score an early copy of the game? The product placement comes courtesy of the show's producers: Sony Pictures Television.
Another season of TV shows means another set of promotional episodes on the PlayStation Store. The first episodes of two new NBC dramas can be downloaded for free on your PS3 and PSP for a limited time only: Mercy and Trauma. Both shows are medical dramas: the first focuses on nurses, while the second promises to be ER ... plus explosions.

Critics weren't too kind on either program, but why take their word? On the eve of the launch of Harmonix's digital British invasion, Conan O'Brien had a very special guest on his show -- Dhani Harrison, a collaborator on The Beatles: Rock Band and son of the late, great George Harrison. He spoke with everyone's favorite ginger giant, then demoed the title with Conan, who struggled on the bass line for "Birthday." Sadly, it looked as though he was playing on Easy. Actually, it looked even easier than that. Does Beatles: Rock Band have a "Toddler" setting?

You can check out NBC's site for a video of the interview and "Birthday" sampling. As for the Cone, we suggest he stay off the gee-tars and stick with his Edith Bunker-inspired vocal work.
Conan isn't the world's best Beatles: Rock Band bassist originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Sep 2009 18:00:00 EST. Starring the show's Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels (Jillian competing against .... Jillian?), as well as the host of the show, Alison Sweeney, the game will do pretty much what the show does: dispense health tips and workout programs to help you diet and exercise your way to a slimmer, healthier you.

Players will be able to "compete in 4, 8 or 12 week programs against former contestants from the television show," and the game even allows players to "receive credit for any progress made while not playing the video game, such as going for a walk or a bike ride." The choice of the honor system here leaves the door open for all manner of dubious exercising. Can you "beat" the game without shedding a pound? Now there's a challenge.

The two different versions will interact with each other, allowing DS players to take their trainers from the Wii game with them to the grocery store to count calories and choose sensible meals. The Wii version of the game also supports the Balance Board, which is pretty much a requirement of any fitness game on the Wii, and will allow players to perform weigh-ins at regular intervals, and choose from a variety of different exercise options.

You can see if you're The Biggest Loser when the game releases this fall.
TV's The Biggest Loser coming to Wii and DS this fall originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 May 2009 11:30:00 EST. Listen. We really wanted to make the focus of this post the humorous nod to EA and Maxis' life-emulator The Sims that was featured on last night's episode of 30 Rock. It's one of our favorite shows, making a reference to one of our most beloved franchises, and ... well, it actually teaches us a valuable lesson about parenting. You can check out Liz Lemon's sagacious suggestion on Hulu (it's around the 1:20 mark).

Yes, we'd love to focus on that, but unfortunately, we find it difficult to write about 30 Rock on our humble gaming blog without instead turning your attention to Werewolf Bar Mitzvah. If you've got time to watch both of these clips, please do -- if you only have time for one, it's hard for us to endorse anything except Tracy Jordan's lupine magnum opus.

[Via Kotaku]
30 Rock passes along wise Sims parenting advice originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 13 May 2009 17:30:00 EST. Finally making its way over to the UK, NBC Universal films can now be enjoyed by one and all in the region via Xbox Live. Announced at a London event by UK Head of Xbox Neil Thompson, gamers in the UK will find Universal Pictures films are already available on the Xbox Live Video Marketplace, with such notable classics as Animal House, Scarface, Cheech and Chong's Next Movie, and Shaun of the Dead leading the charge. As you likely already know, the U.S. has had access to NBC Universal films for some time now, so it's nice to see the UK finally catch up to us.
NBC Universal hops on the Xbox 360 bandwagon in the UK originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 26 Feb 2009 11:28:00 EST. This new partnership brings hit NBC, Sci-Fi Channel and USA Network shows to the XBVM including various SD/HD episodes from TV shows like The Office, Heroes, 30 Rock, Scrubs, SNL and more. NBC/Universal will be joining the over 10,000 movies and television shows currently available on Xbox Live Marketplace, as they're releasing content today. Television shows like Monk, The Office and Battlestar Galactica will be available on the service from NBC, and Universal will contribute films like 12 Monkeys, The Bourne Supremacy, The Mummy, The Chronicles of Riddick.
NBC/Universal content available on Xbox Live today originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 14 Jul 2008 14:07:00 EST. This might be hard to spot. Click on the image above to see a still frame from a recently released PS3 ad. It goes over all the features of the PS3, such as being able to shop on the PLAYSTATION Store. But look very carefully in the back. This picture of the Store features icons from various TV networks, such as NBC, Cartoon Network, HBO and the CW.

Sony has said time and time again that they're interested in delivering video content on the Store. Could this be an indication of what's to come? (Xbox Live Video Marketplace currently offers videos from all of these content providers.) Or, is this an overenthusiastic mock-up?

Check out the original trailer, after the cut.

[Thanks, Anthony S.!]
Continue reading Sharp eyes spot downloadable TV shows in PS3 ad

Sharp eyes spot downloadable TV shows in PS3 ad originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 May 2008 19:00:00 EST. Though not in the upper echelons of the list, dominated by mega-brands like, uh, Tyson chicken and Sue Bee Honey, Second Life did manage to place eighth in The Hollywood Reporter's list of "Most effective placements on TV in 2007." How did the virtual world earn such an honorable distinction? Remember that guest appearance on NBC's popular sitcom The Office? Curiously, as pointed out by kids at Massively, Second Life made a far more prominent appearance on CSI: NY but that episode didn't earn the honor.

Of course, we question how "effective" Second Life's placement really is in terms of prodding people into playing it. We're quite content with the little entertainment it provides within other forms of entertainment, thank you very much.

[Via Massively]
Second Life is 8th "most effective" TV product placement originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 31 Dec 2007 20:28:00 EST. According to the press release, NBCU DM's advertising and sales team can now "sell a portion of IGA's premium in-game advertising inventory, as well as create customized packages for marketing clients on the IGA network."

The NBC division already offers advertising packages over TV, web and mobile mediums. The deal is for other marketing clients, we don't think this indicates an increase in opportunities to shoot up a billboard of Chuck while playing Battlefield 2142. If anything, this indicates a major marketing firm's belief - and justly so, in our opinion - that in-game advertising is only going to expand in prominence and importance as time progresses.
NBC Universal teams with IGA for in-game ad blitz originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 30 Oct 2007 21:30:00 EST. Just one day after Hollywood trade-mag Variety reported that Ubisoft's licensed Heroes game would be revealed this weekend (at a little party called Comic-Con) another, uh, Hollywood trade-mag - this time The Hollywood Reporter - seal the deal, reporting the game should hit next-gen consoles and PC as early as late 2008.

And so, Ubisoft adds Heroes to their stable, continuing their aggressive push for popular licensed content after confirming Lost back in April and James Cameron's Avatar on Tuesday. Now, we patiently wait to see how they adapt the talky superhero mystery into a compelling gaming experience.
Heroes game confirmed, Ubisoft at the helm originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 26 Jul 2007 12:45:00 EST. NBC and Ubisoft aren't ready to talk about it yet, but Variety reports that the two are close to closing a deal that would let the French game company turn the sci-fi hit Heroes into a game. Though they're currently mum, there's a little convention in San Diego this weekend, and they might be able to find a few geeks there who would get excited about the news, if they wanted to unveil it there.

Though it may seem like a natural choice for a game version, what with the superpowers and all, we wonder if anyone at Ubisoft has considered the fact that there's very little actual hero-ing on Heroes. It's largely people talking to other people about their powers and only occasionally using them. Don't get us wrong, we love the show. We hope that Ubisoft doesn't try to jam it into an action mold.

That being said, there's the Reservoir Dogs game, which is either a knock against our argument or terrifying, irrefutable proof of it, we're not sure.
Variety: Ubisoft's Heroes game likely revealed this weekend originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 25 Jul 2007 08:30:00 EST. It seems that Xbox Live Marketplace was designed for just such a thing, as numerous themes and picture packs have appeared, which do little else than tell other people how much you like a certain product (we bought a Halo theme, so we're not exactly innocent). Marketing genius. The latest in this line of fan-vertising is new Heroes content available on Xbox Live Marketplace. Specifically, there is a theme available for 150 points and a picture pack for 80 points. Strangely absent from the Marketplace: the actual Heroes television program.

With such a perfect digital delivery system, you'd think NBC would be offering Heroes on Video Marketplace already. Alas, for now your stuck with the digital equivalent of a T-shirt.
Pay to show your love for Heroes originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 21 May 2007 18:00:00 EST. According to CNBC Sports Business reporter Darren Rovell, multiple industry sources have told him that Electronic Arts asked San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson of his interest and presented him an offer. Tomlinson turned it down.

The reason purportedly has nothing to do with the oft-cited "Madden curse," but that Tomlinson was not happy with EA's financial offer. Electronic Arts, according to Rovell, understands their cover to be what he calls the "Wheaties box endorsement," which means that EA will offer the cover athlete less than his market value. Tomlinson opted against it.

Young, afraid of no curse, is now the cover athlete. But as Rovell justly observes, Madden titles sell well regardless of who graces the cover.
Chargers' Tomlinson turned down Madden cover; not curse, but cash originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 19 Apr 2007 15:15:00 EST. Apparently one of Micah's other tech-based powers is the ability to play unreleased video games. That would actually be a pretty sweet ability to have. Of course, talk about getting no work done as a result. Like us rushing to get this post to you before the show even airs. We read your minds, a la Matt Parkman, and knew you'd want to see this early.

Is there also some sort of a hint or clue buried in the game title? Hiro is desperately trying to get his hands on that special samurai sword that he thinks will let him access his powers once again. Of course in the game Heavenly Sword, the title weapon is the game. According to an IGN interview with the developer Ninja Theory, "The story revolves around an ancient sword, the Heavenly Sword, which belonged to a deity and can never be wielded by a mortal without destroying them ... but as the sword is not meant for her, it sucks away her life force. So you begin the game with only a few hours left to live and have to fulfill this one last mission before the sword finally takes your life. But until that day arrives, Nariko's fighting skills rock."

Also, Gollum/King Kong/Nikola Tesla's assistant Andy Serkis will be playing villainous King Botan in this game. Is there any sort of connection here? We'd love to see Serkis on heroes. His power would be to make you feel slightly uncormfortable. Very interesting, NBC. Masi Oka recently spoke about his undying love for the PSP system, saving him from the more boring aspects of being an actor, like the constant waiting and traveling he must do. "That's all I do on planes, is whip out my PSP and just stay focused on it the whole ride through. I won't even get food. I'm not a big fan of flying, so the PSP system helps me."

Oka takes advantage of all of PSP's capabilities, from games, to music to UMD movies. He's incredibly excited for the advanced Remote Play functionality with the PS3: "With PS3, I'm sure you'll be able to use the PSP system to play games down the line," said Oka. "It'd be cool to play Madden that way. I can't remember all of the plays, and when I'm playing against someone, I don't like the plays to be shown on the screen, but with a PSP, you could select plays for the PS3 Madden and not show anyone what you're thinking."

The full interview is available at PlayStation.com. You can catch Hiro, being a hero, on Heroes on NBC. It returns next Monday at 9PM.
Masi Oka loves his PSP originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 18 Jan 2007 12:00:00 EST. Everyone wants to make them, their friends, family, celebrities and more. We here at Wii Fanboy even had our own fun with it and created each of us.

Now, Life in the Office is holding their own Mii contest for readers to create (dur) the members of the popular American version of The Office. Those who get their Office Mii posted get that week's episode of The Office on iTunes.

The only downfall to the contest is that they are asking you use the online version of the Mii creator and not the one found on the Wii. So, some limitations apply. Still, there have been a lot of entries and some look scarily close to the stars of the show.

It seems there's a game piece offering the choice in recent store circulars. Choose "deal," get 10% any single item in store. Go for broke and choose "no deal," and you might have a chance at a Wii (second prize) or a DS Lite (fourth prize). The store is handing out 50,000 Nintendo systems as part of the promotion. Then again ... that could buy a whole lot of games.

The catch with the super sweet "no deal" option is that you have to take the game piece into the store to get it scanned, and the winners won't be announced until November 24, so that's a bit of a wait if you're one of the lucky few. Still, if that's all it takes to pick up some free stuff, maybe that's a sign we need to go dig through the paper.

Didn't get one of the ads? Surprisingly, the PSP handheld seems to be the system for the writers and staff of the show. "They all have PSPs there running around Liberty City Stories or playing 18 holes on Hot Shots Golf. Now that PSP is out everyone can play the same game in the same room and you don't have to have a TV."

It appears that his favorite games on the handheld come mostly from Sony's excellent launch with the system: Burnout Legends, Twisted Metal Head-On, and Hot Shot Golf. His top game on the PSP is Lumines (great choice, my man!).

Those of you that are interested in joining the SNL cast one day better start getting your PSPs revved up.
SNL writers distracted by the PSP originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 16 Sep 2006 19:30:00 EST.
