Neo Geo X hits $100 at Best Buy

The Neo Geo X Gold console has reached its lowest price yet, with Best Buy putting the handheld (with Neo Geo-shaped dock, full-size joystick, and Ninja Master's cartridge) on sale for $99.99, $100 cheaper than its original price. If you'd like an extra arcade stick, it's also half-price, on sale now for $25.

Amazon still offers the set for $129.99 - which will be the MSRP of the standalone Neo Geo X (with no dock) when that launches.

Neo Geo X production to continue, more games/peripherals on the way

This week's reports that Japanese Neo Geo X production had come to a halt are only somewhat correct, Engadget has learned. In actuality, only production of the Neo Geo X Gold Limited Edition model has ceased, which was always part of the plan. You know, it being a Limited Edition product and everything.

"Tommo will be continuing to support the NEOGEO X format going forward with more games, peripherals and software updates, as well as more units of the console hardware," Tommo told Engadget. "The NEOGEO X Gold System Limited Edition Collection Series that includes Ninja Masters, was always planned to be a limited edition product."

Further elaborations were not made concerning what said games and peripherals might be. Considering that the original Neo Geo AES didn't really have peripherals though, save for a memory card and an adapter that let the AES play arcade cabinet cartridges, we're curious about what Tommo might come up with.

Report: Neo Geo X production ceases in Japan

Manufacturing and production of the confusingly irresistible Neo Geo X has come to a halt in Japan, according to Siliconera's translation of Gamer's report. Shipment of the device has also ceased, meaning that Japan's existing stock of the retro gaming handheld/console is all they're going to get.

It's unclear whether this development will affect the device's availability in North America or other territories, although it has been said that the end of hardware production doesn't translate to the end of software production -- more Game Cards are reportedly on the way. We've reached out for more information and will update if new information becomes available.

Neo Geo X out December 6 in Europe for £175/€199

The Neo Geo X will be released in Europe on December 6, concurrent with the North American release of the retro handheld (and its attendant Neo Geo AES-style dock). Neither continent will have to wait longer than the other to play twenty-year-old games.

According to the listing on retailer Funstock - to which the official website links - the "Limited Edition" bundle, with the dock, a joystick, and the Ninja Master's game card, will retail for £175. Eurogamer notes a €199 price in Euros.

Neo Geo X selling as standalone system for $130

The Neo Geo X will be sold for $130 as a standalone device when it launches this December, compared with the $200 Gold version that includes a charging dock and joystick. If you were stuck deciding between a present for yourself or something for your little cousin Timmy this holiday season, here's the chance to do both of those good deeds.

The $130 version includes a Neo Geo X pre-loaded with 20 classic Neo Geo games. The Neo Geo X will allow local multiplayer when connected to a television through the base station, using a second joystick sold separately at an unannounced price.

The appeal of a console with no future

Welcome to Living in the Past, a weekly column about what's new in old games. Now get off our lawn.

A new dedicated handheld game console from a company that is neither Nintendo nor Sony, with support from only one publisher and with absolutely zero prospects for new games, would seem like an impossible sell - especially at $200. And yet, upon seeing Blaze's Neo Geo X system, I was overwhelmed with the desire to possess it. Other usually rational Joystiq staffers have expressed similar feelings.

I have a hard time understanding why I would be so interested in a new console that only plays old games. But I think the dedicated nature of it is exactly the draw.

'Neogeo X Gold' portable arrives this December for a whopping $200

Despite the fact that 20+ years passed since you last played Neogeo, its portable rebirth this December will be shockingly expensive at $200. Tommo Inc. announced the handheld console's December 6 launch date for North America overnight, and put detail to the various pre-installed software it comes packed with (King of the Monsters and Samurai Showdown 2 are our personal highlights, but the full list of 20 games is below the break). The system also comes with the charging dock and joystick you see above, included in the $200 price.

Beyond being a handheld Neogeo - which, admittedly, is pretty neat -the system doubles as a home console and can be hooked up to TVs/monitors via HDMI or traditional RCA. As such, an external joystick works with the device (though we'd suggest keeping that joystick locked to your domicile rather than take it on the go).

It's unclear what retailers will carry the Neogeo X Gold just yet, but Tommo works with the usual brick-and-mortar suspects (Best Buy, Amazon, GameStop, etc.) Distribution in Europe and Asia is being handled separately, and no prices or dates are given for either territory.
