That card slot will be put to use playing Neo Geo X Classics: Volume 1, a compilation of 3 new (well, unreleased on Neo Geo X, anyway) games: Metal Slug, Sengoku, and Top Hunter. It'll be out in late April.

Publisher Tommo will also include a "Rocket" data transfer/charging cable with Neo Geo Classics: Volume 1. It optimistically announced plans to release four more volumes, each with one of these cables. The full lineup for the series, 15 games in all, can be found after the break.

Volume 1 also includes the Neo Geo X's first system update. Software support and system updates - how very like a current game system.

Update: The post originally said all 15 games were on the first volume. This was an error, for which I apologize. Vol. 1 includes Metal Slug, Sengoku, and Top Hunter.
Continue reading 'Neo Geo X Classics: Volume 1' bundles 3 games for new system [update]

'Neo Geo X Classics: Volume 1' bundles 3 games for new system [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 21 Feb 2013 10:30:00 EST. The Neo Geo X will allow local multiplayer when connected to a television through the base station, using a second joystick sold separately at an unannounced price.

Thanks to everyone who spotted the standalone price in our comments!
Neo Geo X selling as standalone system for $130 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Sep 2012 23:59:00 EST. Tommo Inc. announced the handheld console's December 6 launch date for North America overnight, and put detail to the various pre-installed software it comes packed with (King of the Monsters and Samurai Showdown 2 are our personal highlights, but the full list of 20 games is below the break). The system also comes with the charging dock and joystick you see above, included in the $200 price.

Beyond being a handheld Neogeo - which, admittedly, is pretty neat -the system doubles as a home console and can be hooked up to TVs/monitors via HDMI or traditional RCA. As such, an external joystick works with the device (though we'd suggest keeping that joystick locked to your domicile rather than take it on the go).

It's unclear what retailers will carry the Neogeo X Gold just yet, but Tommo works with the usual brick-and-mortar suspects (Best Buy, Amazon, GameStop, etc.) Distribution in Europe and Asia is being handled separately, and no prices or dates are given for either territory.
Continue reading 'Neogeo X Gold' portable arrives this December for a whopping $200

'Neogeo X Gold' portable arrives this December for a whopping $200 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 13 Aug 2012 04:40:00 EST. What? There was cooing. We cooed a little. Anyway, it's really happening! And it's happening soon! And worldwide. Blaze, who you might know from various Megadrive/Genesis handhelds, is producing the "NeoGeo X" handheld under SNK's license, shipping the device in Q2 with a pre-loaded selection of 20 Neo classics -- a couple of Fatal Furies, King of the Monsters, Metal Slug, and more.

Other features include an SD card slot (for additional games?), and AV out. There's no price for the "limited edition" console yet, but a Blaze rep says in the press release that the company hopes to spread excitement about the Neo Geo "in a more affordable manner, to a much wider audience." That sounds to us like it's going to be cheaper than the $649 SNK asked for the home console at launch.
Continue reading The Neo Geo handheld is real, coming out worldwide in Q2

The Neo Geo handheld is real, coming out worldwide in Q2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 15 Mar 2012 19:10:00 EST. The Neo Geo Pad USB is a replica of the pad included with the Neo Geo CD system, with two important differences: it ends in a USB connector, so it will work with the PS3 or PC; and it has a PS button and two extra face buttons for L1 and R1 -- laid out in a nice, Street Fighter-friendly manner.

The pad is currently on backorder at both NCSX and Play-Asia, but it'll cost in the neighborhood of $50 when it's in stock. If you'd prefer, you can get a PS3 version of the Neo Geo arcade stick from NCSX right now for $39.90.
SNK releases Neo Geo pad for PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 17 Dec 2010 08:30:00 EST. Starting December 21, games from the Neo Geo's library will be released on PSN in both PS3 and PSP versions, costing $8.99 and $6.99 each, respectively. The pricing on the PS3 versions is equivalent to the cost of buying Neo Geo games on the Wii Virtual Console.

Unlike the Virtual Console releases, these aren't just emulated versions of the originals. SNK has added features like online co-op and versus play on PS3 (and Ad-Hoc Party support on PSP), along with other unspecified enhancements. Check after the break for all ten games hitting PS3 on December 21, and the two PSP games arriving at the same time. The other eight are scheduled to arrive on PSP sometime in January.
Continue reading Neo Geo games coming to PSN with online play

Neo Geo games coming to PSN with online play originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Dec 2010 09:39:00 EST. Firmware version 6.3 is out and as Fist Full of Potions points out, something's rotten in Denmark -- or very sweet, depending on how you feel about Japanese consoles of yesteryear. The update allows you to "group content" by putting your games into specific folders corresponding to platform, but also curiously adds empty folders for the NeoGeo and PC Engine -- otherwise known as the TurboGrafx-16.

This update could be the precursor to an announcement for the PC Engine Archives extending their reach beyond Japan or it could simply be an overlooked byproduct of the update. Either way, we've contacted Sony for comment and will let you know what we find out.
PSP firmware 6.3 adds folders for NeoGeo and PC Engine games originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 29 Jun 2010 13:10:00 EST. And speaking of annual observances, there's a Neo Geo game on Virtual Console.
It looks like the PlayStation "Virtual Console" is expanding beyond PSone and TurboGrafx-16 games. Siliconera spotted updates to a number of classic NeoGeo titles, including Metal Slug, The King of Fighters '94 and Fatal Fury. All of these titles have been re-rated to include the PS3 and PSP.

Other NeoGeo games to appear on the ESRB database include Alpha Mission II and Baseball Stars 2. Like the listings above, these games also support both the PS3 and PSP. Hopefully, these downloadable NeoGeo games will feature the same functionality as PSone classics, specifically the ability to download to both the PS3 and PSP for no additional charge.
NeoGeo classics coming to PS3 and PSP, ESRB reveals originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 02 Mar 2010 10:15:00 EST.
Metal Slug 2 (NEOGEO, 1 - 2 players, 900 Wii Points)
Wii Fanboy says: do not download

This week, we've only got one new Virtual Console game to check out. But, thankfully, it's a pretty good one. It might not be recommended to download (9 bucks, ouch), but you all should find a way to play it, because Metal Slug 2 is good. How about Metal Slug Anthology, which is under $20 at most places, including Amazon? Yeah, we suggest that.

When we found out that Wii might see the release of SNK Arcade Classics, we got all kinds of tingly and warm inside. We like those old school SNK games. But when it was confirmed, along with Samurai Shodown Anthology and King of Fighters: The Orochi Saga, well, we had to lock ourselves in a padded room for hours just to get the excitement out. Now we have a release window for Samurai Shodown Anthology.

As you might have guessed, the title is due to hit shelves sometime this winter, meaning it could be available anywhere from now to December 31st. For those of you who aren't in the know, Samurai Shodown Anthology will include 6 games from the classic fighter franchise and will probably be a little more than the cost of 2 SNK games on the Virtual Console.

Save those Wii Points: Samurai Shodown Anthology releases this winter originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 12 Sep 2008 18:14:00 EST.

Mega Man (NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): With the Blue Bomber set to don pixelated pajamas next month, his freshman adventure marks this week's most noteworthy addition to the Wii's window into the past. Assuming you haven't bought the original Mega Man in one of Capcom's many other compilations, Guts Man and company are waiting ever so patiently for you to drop by.

Neo Turf Masters (Neo Geo, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points): This is 133 megs of hot golf action right here, straight from 1996 to your living room. You don't have even to admit to your friends that you like video game golf. We'll keep your dirty little secret.

There is some variety available for those of you looking to download something new to play on Wii. For the retro fans, a pair of new Virtual Console titles should tickle the fancy. If you're looking for something more akin to the frat experience of today, then check out this week's WiiWare download. Without further ado, let's get to the games!

This week's WiiWare game is:

Pong Toss - Frat Party Games (JV Games, 1 - 4 players, 800 Wii Points)

This week's Virtual Console games are:

Chase H.Q. (TG16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points)

Art of Fighting 2 (NEO, 1 - 2 players, 900 Wii Points)

Sadly, there won't be a video wrap-up for this week's releases. But, we should be back next week with our usual video coverage of the Virtual Console releases on Wii.

[Via press release]
VC Monday Madness: Pong Toss, Art of Fighting 2 and Chase H.Q. originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 28 Jul 2008 12:37:00 EST. Another week, another slew of Virtual goodies on offer from Nintendo. This week, the streak of one Virtual Console release is broken, as we get 100% more in that department. Also, Mastiff's WiiWare title is finally up for grabs. If you've got some spare coin laying around, then these might be for you.

This week's WiiWare release:

Major League Eating: The Game (1-2 players, 1,000 Wii Points)

This week's Virtual Console releases:

Donkey Kong 3 (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points)

Ninja Commando (NeoGeo, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points)

As always, be sure to stop back later for our video wrap-up of this week's Virtual Console games.

[Via press release]
VC Monday Madness: Donkey Kong 3, Ninja Commando and Major League Eating originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 14 Jul 2008 08:45:00 EST. There's two items for download on the Wii this week, as we receive one WiiWare and one Virtual Console title in North America. This week's Virtual Console download is an old favorite, so without further delay, let's get to the goods.

This week's WiiWare release is:

SPOGS Racing (1-2 players, 1,000 Wii Points)

This week's Virtual Console release is:

King of the Monsters (Neo Geo, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points): While already available on the Wii already as part of SNK Arcade Classics Volume 1, it's good to know that despite all of the problems in the world, there are still some disagreements between a giant lizard and an overgrown beetle than can be settled as part of a midtown battle royal. SNK's arcade original King of the Monsters allows players to choose from six different giant creatures and then grapple with the others in order to decide the fate of the city, as long as that fate ends in total devastation.

This week's Virtual Console releases are:
If you're reading The VC Advantage and you own (or plan to own) the new VC release of Samurai Shodown, it's probably occurred to you to head over to GameFAQs and look for additional content that can be unlocked. If you've done so, you'd be pleased to find codes to unlock three additional characters.

You'd then be disappointed after trying them, because they're in error. The Shiki and Zankuro unlock codes originate from Samurai Spirits! on the Neo Geo Pocket Color, and the code to unlock the Kuroko judge character is from the Neo Geo Samurai Shodown II. It's easy to understand how the NGPC codes got mixed in: search engines and other automated systems wouldn't be able to tell between Samurai Spirits! and Samurai Spirits (the Japanese title for Shodown), making mixups easy.

You're free to use those saved five minutes however you please!

Ninja Combat (NeoGeo, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points): As evident in the above video, "Ninja Combat" is quite the efficient and appropriate title. Can your ninja combatant wield a deadly sword? Yup! Is he capable of performing dizzying acrobatic maneuvers and mercilessly slaughtering innocent, roller-coasting bystanders? Certainly!

Metal Slug (NeoGeo, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points): Honestly, we shouldn't even have to expend a bullet point on this game. You know what Metal Slug is all about. Dash through some jungles, some mountains, some ruins (they're all to East, just so you know) and shoot everything that isn't part of the background. Everything.

City Connection (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Travel through cities like New York and London, while marveling at the engineering incompetence that spawned multiple levels of dead-end roads floating in the sky. Driving up and down them is apparently illegal too, so be sure to bump off those pesky police vehicles.

Now, this is something we can get used to. Both WiiWare titles and Virtual Console titles releasing together, side-by-side? Totally awesome, if you ask us. And, on top of it, both of Nintendo's services are hooking us all up with some solid downloads today. With it being a holiday and all, we're glad Nintendo is providing us with some stuff to do during our downtime.
There's no mention of a Wii version, but a Wii version is listed in the game's ESRB rating, and it was discussed at TGS. We hope it's not a mistake, because we love old games, and this lineup is totally hot.

We kind of suspect that this isn't actually coming to the Wii, because of the 16 games on the disc, 7 are already available as Virtual Console downloads. Metal Slug, of course, is also available on its own disc. We have no issue with redundancy, but we doubt SNK would give people the option of either paying $9 per game or (judging by recent disc releases) between $15 and $30 for a whole load of games.

In terms of stuff that isn't on the Wii, the disc includes things like Shock Troopers and Samurai Shodown. Check after the break for the full, awesome list. Just imagine how much this collection would have cost in new Neo Geo cartridge form.

Continue reading Possibly Wii-bound SNK Arcade Classics collection is awesome

Possibly Wii-bound SNK Arcade Classics collection is awesome originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 19 Jan 2008 14:00:00 EST. Today is a big day for the Virtual Console here at Wii Fanboy as Star Tropics makes itself available for download later on today. It's a title that one of our own has been looking forward to for quite some time. And, the title backing it up isn't so bad, as it's the first entry in the long-running King of Fighters series, King of Fighters '94.

This week's titles are:.

Star Tropics (NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points)

The King of Fighters '94 (NeoGeo, 1 - 2 players, 900 Wii Points)

Be sure to stop back later for our video wrap-up of the day's offerings.
VC Monday Madness: StarTropics and King of Fighters '94 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 07 Jan 2008 11:15:00 EST. Back to the middle ages of video gaming. Back to the early '90s. Mortal Kombat was a huge, bloody (and we do mean bloody) hit in the arcades. Unfortunately, console makers were concerned with how such a gory game would be received in family living rooms. Thus, the game's signature red blood was replaced with white "sweat" for the console versions.

Luckily we don't live in such dark times anymore, right? Not so. The Xbox Live Arcade version of Metal Slug 3 similarly has been toned down to include white "sweat" instead of red blood. This is especially odd considering the Metal Slug 3 port for the supposedly family-friendly Wii included what one reviewer called "arterial blood spraying everywhere."

Luckily (for real this time), there's a way around this bit of historical revisionism that's as simple as the Genesis Mortal Kombat's famous "blood code." As Insert Credit points out, simply setting your Xbox language to Japanese brings back the original Neo Geo classic in all its gory glory. Apparently, someone at Microsoft thinks the Japanese have a higher tolerance for this stuff. Either that, or they think Japanese gamers are just more picky about historical accuracy in their re-releases. Which is probably true, but still ...
Simple fix brings back the blood in XBLA Metal Slug 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 04 Jan 2008 13:01:00 EST. Today is a pretty sweet day for the Virtual Console, what with a high profile, fun game like Bubble Bobble hitting the scene. We can't wait to get our download on later, as we have very fond memories of playing the NES game into the early hours of the morning during our younger years. As for the other titles available, we can't say we're familiar with them, so we're anxious to try the "new to us" games.

This week's Virtual Console games include:

Bubble Bobble (NES, 1 - 2 players, 500 Wii Points)

Light Crusader (Sega Genesis, 1 player, 800 Wii Points)

Top Hunter (NeoGeo, 1 - 2 players, 900 Wii Points)

And, of course, be sure to stop back later for our video wrap-up.
VC Monday Madness: Bubble Bobble, Light Crusader and Top Hunter originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 31 Dec 2007 09:45:00 EST. As predicted, the arrival of December the 10th on your calendar coincides with the release of Pokemon Snap on the Virtual Console. Of course, you all know about the added feature to the Virtual Console edition of the N64 game by now. Well, hopefully this opens up a whole new world of possible improvements to other Virtual Console games in the future.

Today's Virtual Console releases are:

Pokémon Snap (Nintendo 64, 1 player, 1,000 Wii Points)

Baseball Stars 2 (NEOGEO, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points)

Ghosts 'n Goblins (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points)

They're off releasing compilations and embarrassing DS games. The company responsible for your sudden access to Blue's Journey is D4 Enterprise, who has been obtaining licenses for Neo Geo games from SNK and putting the games on the Virtual Console.

Gamasutra's Brandon Sheffield spoke to D4's Shinobu Shimizu about the company and their Neo Geo plans. Basically, D4 plans to release SNK Playmore properties (and, as shown by World Heroes, ADK games as well) in a very faithfully-emulated form, with the possibility of a few concessions made to new gamers. Selectable difficulty in Magician Lord is cited as such a change.

D4 already has experience with enabling retrogaming on rare systems -- they got their start with the 1Chip MSX device, a new, cheaper version of the MSX computer (pictured). It is no surprise, then, that D4 is behind the plans to put MSX games on the VC.

The mysterious D4 Enterprise speaks about their Neo Geo plans originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 15 Nov 2007 10:30:00 EST.
