Catholics have the Vatican. And gamers have Japan. While many significant contributions to the world of gaming have come from outside the Land of the Rising Sun, Japan is the unassailable fountainhead of modern video gaming. It's the birth and workplace of gaming giants such as Hideo Kojima, Shinji Mikami, Yuji Naka, and probably <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shigeru_Miyamoto">others</a>. To say that Japan is a place that hardcore gamers need to check out is an understatement at best. <br /><br /> Recently, I took a week to visit my brother who teaches English at a Japanese university near Nagoya. Hundreds of thousands of words could be used to describe the wonderful food, the beautiful temples, and the unique culture of the country. But being a life-long gamer, I paid special attention to the distinct connection between the country and the gaming scene we all know and love. For the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/top-five/">Top 5</a>, I usually come up with a topic, then list the top five items for that topic in order. For this edition, it was truly difficult to narrow it down to only five. With that in mind, here's my best attempt at listing the Top 5 gaming elements of my time in Japan. <br /><br /> </div> <br /> <div align="center"> </div> <div class="buttontext"> <div align="center"><a id="ninbutton" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/18/5-japanese-vc/">NEXT &gt;&gt; </a></div> </div> <style type="text/css"> #ninbutton { border-style: solid; border-color: #000; border-width: 2px; background-color: #BBB; color: #000; text-decoration: none; width: 100px; text-align: center; padding: 2px 2px 2px 2px; margin: 2px 2px 2px 2px; } .buttontext { color: #000; text-decoration: none; font: bold 14pt Helvetica; } #ninbutton:hover { text-decoration: none; color: #BBB; background-color: #000; } </style> <center> </center><br /><br /> <div style="border-top: 1px solid; padding-top: 5px;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/top-five/"><img hspace="4" border="1" align="left" vspace="4" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/top5_thumbnail_kd_20080702.jpg" /></a><em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/top-five/">The Top 5</a> is a weekly feature that provides us with a forum to share our opinions on various aspects of the video game culture, and provides you with a forum to tell us how wrong we are. Hopefully, future media for the title will show us exactly why we'll need to purchase the game again (other than the fact that it's <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7KcpgQKo2I">frakkin'</a> <em>Chrono Trigger</em>) -- until then, we'll be <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFlcqWQVVuU">anxiously awaiting Christmas morning</a>, when we'll scurry to the foyer to discover that Ho-Ho has left us stockingfuls of <em>heartwarming nostalgia</em>.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> We've got the post-countdown trailer posted after the jump, courtesy of GameVideos.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/06/chrono-trigger-ds-countdown-ends-reveals-chrono-trigger/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chrono Trigger DS countdown ends, 'reveals' Chrono Trigger</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/06/chrono-trigger-ds-countdown-ends-reveals-chrono-trigger/">Chrono Trigger DS countdown ends, 'reveals' Chrono Trigger</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 06 Jul 2008 12:00:00 EST. From what we can tell through blurs and blind spots, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Final%20Fantasy%20Tactics%20A2%3A%20Grimoire%20of%20the%20Rift">Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift</a></em> looks similar to it's last-gen predecessor, with a few minor graphical tweaks and improvements in sound. Considering Square-Enix has added a handful of new classes and races, and yet another lengthy single-player campaign, we're wondering where we can find a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Spuw3qv4bbo">black market eyeball dealer/installer</a> in our neck of the woods, and if they can pencil us in before the game's June 24 release date.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/14/final-fantasy-tactics-a2-trailer-full-of-whimsy-tactics/">Final Fantasy Tactics A2 trailer full of whimsy, tactics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 14 Jun 2008 18:00:00 EST. This stylish trailer introduces us to the protagonist of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/15/see-order-of-ecclesia-next-ds-castlevania/"><em>Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia</em></a> -- the raven-haired Shanoa (who looks a bit too similar to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/11/new-bullet-witch-media/"><em>Bullet Witch</em>'s Alicia</a> for our comfort), and her many, many methods for murdering and dismembering ol' Vlad's minions. Sure, she may not wield the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castlevania">Vampire Killer whip made famous in other <em>Castlevania</em> titles</a>, but she does dispatch a <a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=2g1fr5vk72M">Giant Enemy Crab</a> with a falling elevator, which arguably possesses a bit more panache than the Belmont family's legendary cord.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/30/first-castlevania-order-of-ecclesia-trailer-is-awesome-whiples/">First Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia trailer is awesome, whipless</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 30 May 2008 23:00:00 EST. We tried to get Hank Williams, Jr. to kick off this post with "Are You Ready for Some Football?" but he was booked. So, we're just going to assume that you are, in fact, ready for some football ... in this case, a rundown of our recent hands-and-stylus-on with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tecmo-bowl-kickoff"><em>Tecmo Bowl Kickoff</em></a> for Nintendo DS. <br /><br />It's been 19 years since the original <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/12/sonic-spinball-tecmo-bowl-and-double-dungeons-hit-virtual-console/"><em>Tecmo Bowl</em></a> hit the field on NES, making it one of the earliest football sims, not to mention one of the most famous. For its return on modern hardware, Tecmo drafted its first US executive producer, Ryan Gilbo, to head the project, and he promptly set out to update the game just enough, but not change too much.<br /><br />Read on for our full impressions and see first video of the game in action after the break.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tecmo-bowl-kickoff-1/">Tecmo Bowl Kickoff</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tecmo-bowl-kickoff-1/#831407"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/tbk_front_box_art_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tecmo-bowl-kickoff-1/#831253"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/tbk52912_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tecmo-bowl-kickoff-1/#831252"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/tbk5296_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tecmo-bowl-kickoff-1/#831251"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/tbk5293_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tecmo-bowl-kickoff-1/#831250"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/tbk52911_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/29/joystiq-hands-on-tecmo-bowl-kickoff/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq hands-on: Tecmo Bowl Kickoff</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/29/joystiq-hands-on-tecmo-bowl-kickoff/">Joystiq hands-on: Tecmo Bowl Kickoff</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 29 May 2008 16:00:00 EST. We've realized we covered this before, but think of it this way -- now you're two times more aware of these firm, firm prices as the other denizens of the internet.<br /><br />Whether you've yet to join <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/17/another-analyst-says-wii-fit-will-push-wii-shortages/">the hunt for the Golden Ticket-esque Nintendo Wii</a>, or you're one of the eight people yet to buy a Nintendo DS of some <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/01/26/nintendo-announces-ds-lite/">shape</a> or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/27/pink-is-the-new-ds-lite/">color</a>, we certainly hope that the reasoning behind your reluctance to join Camp N isn't the anticipation of a price drop for the two (relatively) affordable consoles. According to a <a href="http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080425/ap_on_hi_te/japan_nintendo">recent statement from Ninty's Satoru Iwata</a>, there are currently no plans to lower the retail price on either of their <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/01/31/a-lucrative-new-ds-feature/">money-printing apparatuses</a>.<br /><br />While this fact isn't exactly surprising considering the systems' sales success at their current costs, Iwata's reason for the set-in-stone price is rather intriguing -- should either system undergo a cheapening, he explained, it would upset those who bought the console at its former price. Yes, we're sure it has nothing to do with the near completion of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/08/miyamoto-Mii-graces-nintendo-chests/">Miyamoto's</a> personal, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34Sb0hGUNIQ">Scrooge McDuck-style gold coin swimming pool</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/27/nintendo-not-dropping-wii-or-ds-lite-price-anytime-soon/">Nintendo not dropping Wii or DS Lite price anytime soon [Update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 27 Apr 2008 17:00:00 EST. Perhaps it was that heartbreaking moment in <em>Final Fantasy VII</em>, or the ending to <em>Shadow of the Colossus</em>. Maybe it was the time your mom made you go to bed while you were <a href="http://karacry.ytmnd.com/">in the middle of a particularly gripping Karazhan raid</a>, or when you finally finished <a href="http://imdb.com/title/tt0098384/"><em>Steel Magnolias Adventures</em></a>, a game so awesome that it hasn't actually been created yet.<br /><br />Bandai Namco is making a pretty heady claim -- not only is their newest game going to make you cry, it's going to do it about 100 times. Calling the <a href="http://ds.ign.com/articles/849/849611p1.html">aptly titled <em>99 no Namida</em> (or<em> 99 Tears</em>)</a> a game isn't actually accurate. It's more of a handheld therapeutic crying assistant, providing you with a sad graphic novel to read for 15 minutes at the end of each day, with a brief questionnaire following shortly after, the results of which will help move you closer to the story which will more effectively tug at your heartstrings, and further from the respect of your bros on the wrestling squad.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/09/gently-weep-over-your-ds-with-bandai-namcos-99-tears/">Gently weep over your DS with Bandai Namco's 99 Tears</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 09 Feb 2008 21:00:00 EST. According to a recent <a href="http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2008/080125e.pdf">Nintendo investor report</a>, <a href="http://www.dsfanboy.com/2008/01/29/rumor-europe-to-get-books-on-its-dses/">European DS owners might be able to ride</a> the e-book wave this coming winter -- the tentative release date for the tentatively titled <em>DS Novel.</em><br /><br />Details about the game are non-existent, though DS Fanboy speculates that it's an English language version of a Japanese title which allows the user to peruse <a href="http://www.dsfanboy.com/2007/08/20/i-read-the-classics-of-japanese-literature-and-all-i-got-was-thi/">over 100 complete books</a>. We hope to hear more about this later in the year -- the thought of being able to sit down with our favorite editions of "Chicken Soup for the Soul" without all the fuss and muss of ink and pulp fills us with anticipation.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/03/rumor-novels-on-their-way-to-european-dses/">Rumor: Novels on their way to European DSes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 03 Feb 2008 16:30:00 EST. We watched with rapt attention as the shaky-cam footage showed Mario and Luigi jumping from the Wii to the DS using a previously unknown, hidden galaxy and the DS' WiFi download capabilities. We were surprised to see low-resolution versions of Mario and Luigi running around low-resolution versions of familiar <em>Mario Galaxy</em> levels. We were shocked and hopeful when the video promised each DS star would be redeemable for 10 Wii shop points.<br /><br />We weren't ready to definitively declare the video real or fake at the time, but now, after some digging, we're ready to set the record straight on this hoax. Read on for our evidence and thoughts on the matter.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/19/super-mario-galaxy-ds-video-a-hoax/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Super Mario Galaxy DS video a hoax</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/19/super-mario-galaxy-ds-video-a-hoax/">Super Mario Galaxy DS video a hoax</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 19 Dec 2007 23:00:00 EST. <div align="left">We <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/30/two-new-ds-lite-models-both-branded-and-bundled/">already knew</a> this was coming, but Nintendo affirmed today that we'll be seeing two new DS models on the day after Thanksgiving, and they sent along these sexy new box shots to prove it. The first is a <em>Phantom Hourglass</em> bundle that comes with a "<span>glimmering Gold edition" of the DS. If you're ready to take DS gaming from something you can do in public places to something you can do in dimly-lit public places full of non-judgmental people, this is the package for you.<br /><br />For <em>the ladies</em> there's the Rose DS (check it out after the break), which comes bundled with <em>Nintendogs. </em>It's the "Best Friends" edition of the game, the one that should be rated M for "Most Adorable Thing Ever". Both packages are available for the bargain price of $150.<em> </em><br /></span></div>

EGM and likely many, many Wii and DS owners have maligned the lack of quality control on Nintendo platforms of late, especially considering how tightly the company held the reigns in its early days. In <a href="http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2007/10/24/nintendo%e2%80%99s-perrin-kaplan-defends-the-nintendo-seal-of-quality-reveals-her-best-day-speaks-a-little-japanese-part-2-of-2/">a recent interview</a> with MTV Multiplayer, outgoing Nintendo spokesperson Perrin Kaplan defended the company, explaining that it was less focused on quality control than natural selection.<br /><br />"If [publishers] publish for any of the three, if the product does not sell well, it fails on its own. If they cannot get shelf space, it fails on its own. If consumers don't buy it, it fails on its own. So I do think that the poorer stuff does get sifted out and the really good products do rise to the top," Kaplan said. <br /><br />There's logic to what she's saying, of course. But it must be easy to advocate survival of the fittest when all of your games are <a href="http://www.jacklalanne.com/biograph.html">Jack Lalanne</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/25/nintendo-uses-natural-selection-for-its-quality-control/">Nintendo uses natural selection for its quality control</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 25 Oct 2007 14:55:00 EST. Now, gramps and grandma are getting a fresh coat of paint for the bajillion or so DS owners in Japan. <br /><br />This new version will offer new animations, a multiplayer mode and boss fights. The kicker is that the games will be sold separately from each other for the equivalent of $44 ... a piece. Hey, we just finally figured out how to pronounce <em>Ys</em> properly: "ball-sy."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/25/ys-i-and-ii-being-remade-for-ds/">Ys I and II being remade for DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 25 Oct 2007 10:01:00 EST. While we still have no idea on the validity of that, buried within that story was the equally interesting (and equally rumored) nugget that Nintendo would be releasing a DS flash card designed so Nintendo could sell Game Boy and Game Boy Color games though some sort of download service.<br /><br />As you know, GB and GBC carts do not work in the DS, because, scientifically speaking, they would look stupid, so we're happy to see some of the classics become available. That said, the big question (just after "Is this actually happening?") is how much we'll be paying. As we've learned, where Nintendo's concerned, nostalgia can often come at a premium.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.dsfanboy.com/2007/10/24/rumor-official-flash-cards-for-downloading-game-boy-games/">DSF</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/25/rumor-nintendo-to-offer-flash-cards-for-game-boy-downloads/">Rumor: Nintendo to offer flash cards for Game Boy downloads</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 25 Oct 2007 09:05:00 EST. In speaking with MTV Multiplayer, Aonuma said that in his quest to return the series' roots he unintentionally remade the very first version of the game, which just passed <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Zelda#Development_and_release">20 years</a> since its NES release here in North America.<br /><br />Honestly, the <em>Zelda</em> series has been so impressive under his leadership, we'd trust the guy if he said <em>Phantom Hourglass</em> was an unintentional remake of <em>Kabuki Quantum Fighter.</em> ... Come to think of it, we'd totally buy that game. But if you're looking for something more traditional, you can get that old <em>Zelda </em>feeling for yourself when the portable <em>Wind Waker</em> sequel drops next week.<br /><strong></strong><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/28/phantom-hourglass-is-unintentional-zelda-remake/">Phantom Hourglass is unintentional Zelda remake</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 28 Sep 2007 15:00:00 EST. Do people exist somewhere that don't own this system? If the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/japanesehardwaresales">Japanese sales charts</a> are to be believed, then there have been enough Nintendo DS systems sold so that every man, woman, child, and dog on the planet could have one of these. And a spare.<br /><br />However, if you are DS-less and have a hankering to get onboard with the action, and you have some rudimentary photochopping skills, then try your hand at the <a href="http://www.dkcontest.smugmug.com/">Nintendo DS/DK contest at SmugMug</a>. All you have to do is paste the little guy climbing to the top of pretty much anything, and then submit it. Keep in mind though, images must be under 12 mb in size (good gawd).<br /><br />It's a pretty easy contest to enter, and the swag is well worth the time, so why not whip something up and get in? We made one in just a few seconds (hint, it's the image for this post) so you should trump our skillz easily and submit it to them. <br /><br />Check out the rules on their site. Also, the <a href="http://dkcontest.smugmug.com/gallery/3327865#194269888">comment</a> on the first (and only) entry that's up so far is ... priceless. But there's been a bit of confusion over when the game, which came out in Japan earlier this month, will actually be reaching our shores.<br /><br />As <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2007/07/31/chibi-robo-park-patrol-cancelled-golin-harris-comments/">SiliconEra reports</a>, the release date on the game's <a href="http://www.nintendo.com/gamemini?gameid=M6m5BJiBJffWSbGdONW6kUwnO_33ttwP">Nintendo.com page</a> has been moved from Sept. 24 to Oct. 2. A one week delay isn't a big deal, but reports that pre-orders for the game are being <a href="http://www.destructoid.com/rumor-chibi-robo-park-patrol-ds-canceled-37148.phtml">canceled</a> at Gamestop are more worrying. The game doesn't show up on searches on Gamestop's web site (unlike <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/search.asp?N=13&amp;Ns=Sort%5FETA%7C%7CTitle">other October releases</a>) and <a href="http://www.gamefly.com/products/detail.asp?pid=125370&amp;t=0&amp;fcTrack=Search?-?Popularity">GameFly's listing</a> of a TBD release date is similarly troubling. The official word from Nintendo's PR agency is that the game is still on track, so maybe we're just worrying over nothing. Either way, we'll keep you posted when we hear more.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/01/chibi-robo-sequel-delayed-possibly-canceled-for-u-s/">Chibi-Robo sequel delayed, possibly canceled for U.S.</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 01 Aug 2007 21:30:00 EST. So, it looks like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/13/is-viva-pinata-headed-for-the-ds/">Shane Kim</a>'s talk of bringing the franchise to the DS making sense ended up being one of those sly hints of things to come. <em>Viva Pi&ntilde;ata</em> on the DS is being developed by Rare and will be very similar to its lovably fun Xbox 360 version featuring the same core gameplay elements. Nothing more about the DS version was mentioned other than it'll be teh awesomeness, but we'd like to hear when the DS version will hit retail, if it'll incorporate the DS's wireless features and how pretty it is.<br /><br />So, there you have it fanboys. <em>Viva Pi&ntilde;ata</em> will be on the Nintendo DS and Horstachio will have a new condo to call home. Reader capnwang wrote in to tell us of a <em>Pokemon </em>tournament going on at select GameStop stores. Taking place this Saturday, July 21st, the tournament demands you bring your DS and team of <em>Pokemon</em> in-store for the chance to win a copy of <em>Pokemon Battle Revolution</em>. In calling our local GameStop, they aren't having a tournament there, but acknowledged that other stores are doing it.<br /><br />Plan on running down there this weekend to rock your <em>Pokemon</em>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/18/gamestop-holding-pokemon-tournament-this-saturday/">GameStop holding Pokemon tournament this Saturday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 Jul 2007 12:20:00 EST. The resulting project is actually quite impressive, considering, and we're happy to see that one of the original developers took the time to create a homebrew port of it for the DS. <br />
<br />
Short but sweet, <em>The Martian DS</em> is a side-scrolling shooter in the vein of<em> Alien Hominid</em>. Players roam the city picking up weapons and power-ups while dodging constant gunfire from the local law enforcement. The game really suffers from the lack of a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/music">soundtrack</a>, but the original character sprites, especially the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/10/kururin-doughnuts-randomly-appears-on-gametrailers-with-english/">donut</a>-heaving boss, makes up for it. <br />

There isn't much to these latest clips from <em>The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass</em>, which makes our job of presenting them that much more difficult. Still, what little we do get to see has us intrigued, as Link hauls around some pieces of the triforce and chats with his annoying little fairy cohort. If you're as excited as we are for the game (we're going to assume you're <em>more excited</em>), then you want to see any and all things related to <em>Phantom Hourglass</em>, so head on over and watch the videos.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=21385">Go Nintendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/17/set-sail-for-new-phantom-hourglass-footage/">Set sail for new Phantom Hourglass footage</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Jul 2007 16:25:00 EST. If you thought <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/23/population-tire-bounces-onto-the-ds/">Population: Tire</a></em> shook the scene with its innovative touchscreen controls, prepare to be brought to your knees by <em>Secret Collect</em>. Epic in every sense of the word, this remake is half <em>Indiana Jones</em>, half <em><strike>God of War</strike></em> <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/zelda">The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time</a></em>:<br /><br />"The greatest secrets man has ever known have been scattered all over the globe and its [sic] your job to find them."<br /><br /><em><a href="http://homestarrunner.com/">Homestar Runner's</a></em> Strong Bad stars in the game, represented by a magnificently detailed, red square. You'll navigate the agile hero through fifteen blocky mazes and collect yellow squares to advance to the next spine-tingling level. Picking up the blue power-ups (also squares) will boost your speed, keeping you ahead of the labyrinths' treacherous monsters -- so treacherous, they're invisible to the naked eye! <br /><br />The <a href="http://www.homestarrunner.com/sbcollect.html">original Flash version</a> is also available online for those of you who either lack the tools to play homebrew games or don't have enough room on your hard drive for the 18KB download.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/16/secret-collect-reveals-itself-on-the-ds/">Secret Collect. reveals itself on the DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 Jul 2007 19:25:00 EST. We can honestly say we haven't purchased this game <em>because</em> of all the controversy surrounding it, however now that news hits that those affected by the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/01/snk-vs-capcom-glitch-fighters-ds/">broken carts</a> are receiving the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/12/snk-fixing-card-fighters-ds/">promised</a> replacements, we're feeling a bit more confident. And, even though SNK Playmore took longer than we would've initially thought to help those in need, we think if there are any more problems from here on out, we'd be covered.<br /><br />Did any of you send in for a replacement cartridge? Receive it yet?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/16/snk-vs-capcom-card-fighters-replacement-in-full-swing/">SNK vs Capcom: Card Fighters replacement in full swing</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 Jul 2007 17:30:00 EST. After running it through their rigorous gauntlet of tests, Joystiq came to the conclusion that the game was sloppy and hard to handle. More like <em>hard to swallow</em> for all of those looking forward to playing the game on the DS, we imagine.<br />
<br />
Even with the ability to guide your attack ship with the d-pad, or exclusive use of the stylus, the game is harder to play than on the Xbox 360, according to Joystiq. With 60 levels to play, we imagine even a little bit of time with the game won't help correct this error. Guess the game just needs analog sticks ...<br />

We didn't need 3D to enjoy <span style="font-style: italic;">The Simpsons'</span> license when it was an arcade game in the 90s, and we don't need it now!<br /><br />Judging by these first two video previews, the family's first foray onto our dual-screened system looks fantastic! As expected, the 2D platformer is teeming with references and characters from the show, even including a a level where you get to eat your way through the Land of Chocolate. According to <a href="http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/07/hands-on-the-si.html">Game|Life</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ElectronicArts/">Electronic Arts</a> will be packing the handheld title with 2000 lines of spoken dialogue.<br /><br />We weren't impressed with most of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/minigames/">minigames</a> we saw unlocked in Noiseland Arcade, but the "Pet Homer" <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Nintendogs/" style="font-style: italic;">Nintendogs</a> spoof definitely made us smile. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/promotional%20consideration">Promotional Consideration</a> is a weekly feature about the Nintendo DS advertisements you usually flip past, change the channel on, or just tune out.<br /><br />If you missed our spotlight on Leo Burnett's "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/08/promotional-consideration-communion-day/">Communion Day</a>" ad last Sunday, make sure to give it a glance. Even if you've already skimmed through our words on the award-winning piece, we've updated our summation with some insight from art director Rosemary Collini Bosso.<br /><br />This weekend's installment of Promotional Consideration takes a critical eye to an unconvincing ad that might actually <em>drive away</em> consumers. Joystiq has all of the deets on a new social network launching for the DS from Disney Interactive called Dgamer. The service is to launch with the upcoming <em>Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian</em> and will be included in all Disney titles from there on out. The service, which will allow users to create custom avatars, chat wirelessly and track their friends' progress in Dgamer titles, will also allow users to log in to their account at Disney.com, for further accessibility. The overall package resembles a fairly popular online networking service on another console, wouldn't you say?<br /><br />The rub lies in the fact that before you can add friends to the network, you still have to exchange friend codes. As if we could get around that ...<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/13/disney-wants-you-to-get-social-on-the-ds-with-their-dgamer-servi/">Disney wants you to get social on the DS with their Dgamer service</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Jul 2007 14:00:00 EST. Upcoming games and <em>future enjoyment</em> <em>of them</em> is probably on your mind right now, as it is ours. That doesn't mean your, or our, responsibility to enjoy some nice gaming over the weekend can be overlooked, though!<br /><br />So, we ask: what are you playing? What will you be rocking in your DS this weekend? <br />Last night's Game Night session was less of a Game Night and more of a "sit in chat for awhile before playing a handful of matches" night. It was sad to see, as we were all excited and ready to play <em>Planet Puzzle League</em>. We guess you guys just don't enjoy the game, or a majority of you weren't able to secure it yet, full of intentions of doing so. Even Joystiq, the wind beneath our wings, fell victim to the malignant screenshots that were supposedly leaked from a "secret press gathering" by person-in-the-know <em>gobo_4227</em>.<br /><br />To your right, you'll see one of those supposed screenshots of <em>Golden Sun: The Sooth Sayer</em> compared with promotional artwork that was released for <em>Golden Sun: The Lost Age</em> back in 2002. Unless you count the bloom filter and "Touch to Start" text, the images are exact twins. The fact that we've heard no official mention of the new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/RPG/">RPG</a> -- or any other Camelot-developed title for either Nintendo console -- whilst <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/E307">E3</a> continues makes this rumor seem even more unconvincing. <br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/12/not-e307-fake-golden-sun-ds-announced/">NOT E307: Fake Golden Sun DS announced</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 12 Jul 2007 16:30:00 EST. With all of the craziness that comes with E3, we still need to remember the important things in life. Important things like our wonderful <span style="font-style: italic;">Game Night</span> gaming sessions. Last week, we didn't put up a poll to select tonight's game, so we're just going to call it ourselves. Our theme game will be ...<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/12/ds-fanboy-presents-game-night-7-12-07/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DS Fanboy presents: Game Night 7/12/07</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/12/ds-fanboy-presents-game-night-7-12-07/">DS Fanboy presents: Game Night 7/12/07</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 12 Jul 2007 12:20:00 EST. According to the interview, were it not for the campaigning of a particular team member, North America might not have received the game: "There was one [who] was very passionate about the game, and wanted to give players in the United States the chance to experience. He felt that <span style="font-style: italic;">Front Mission 3</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">4</span> proved that there is a userbase, and since the DS is currently very popular, the thinking went, 'Why not give it a try?'"<br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/12/front-mission-ds-interview-and-media-galore/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E307: Front Mission DS interview and media galore</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/12/front-mission-ds-interview-and-media-galore/">E307: Front Mission DS interview and media galore</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 12 Jul 2007 11:30:00 EST. It's true, we didn't hear much about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/zelda"><em>The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass</em></a> at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/11/our-keynote-reactions-let-us-tell-you-them/">Nintendo's E3 keynote</a>. But Nintendo discreetly dropped some images into a press release and stuffed them into our briefcase, giving us the notion that if they happened to be shown to you guys, it wouldn't be <em>terrible.</em><br /><br />A few new screenshots have been added to the gallery, as well as some character art. One of the pieces is the same artwork used in the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/06/possible-english-language-phantom-hourglass-box/">supposed US boxart</a>, which, to us, confirms the validity of that boxart. Man, the <em>Wind Waker</em> art style still out-styles pretty much everything else out there, especially in mainstream AAA games. Sorry, <em>every other game.<br /></em><br /><em></em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/11/e307-zelda-screens-and-delightful-artwork/">E307: Zelda screens and delightful artwork</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 Jul 2007 20:40:00 EST. News of<em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/advancewars">Advance Wars DS 2</a></em>, for instance, was hidden in a European press release, dated for the fourth quarter. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tingle">Freshly Picked - Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland</a></em>, starring everyone's favorite cosplaying fairy, was also quietly announced for this September 14th in the same report.<br /><br />On the North American side, Nintendo revealed that it will be publishing <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/layton">Professor Layton and the Curious Village</a></em> on December 3rd, the same day <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/smashbros">Super Smash Bros. Doesn't this look like one of those big purses from back in the 50's? Maybe a purse someone might sell Avon out of? It reminds us of the crazy town in <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099487/"><em>Edward Scissorhands</em></a> for some reason. But, upon <a href="http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20070710/ggl04.htm">opening</a> <a href="http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20070710/ggl05.htm">it</a> <a href="http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20070710/ggl06.htm">up</a>, we're shown that it isn't all looks with this case. There are compartments for cartridges, the unit itself, as well as any accessories on would need.<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/11/ds-lite-case-has-that-50s-feel-with-modern-functionality/">DS Lite case has that 50's feel with modern functionality</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 Jul 2007 14:15:00 EST.
