Civil war has broken out among three distinct factions of the Joystiq staff, each swearing allegiance to one of the three different versions of Nintendogs + Cats that are due out alongside the 3DS on March 27. The rifts were formed after Nintendo updated the games' official Japanese site, revealing the different breeds contained within each cartridge -- little did they know that by doing so, they'd be forging hostilities between a group of online writers and, more notably, best friends.

Look, we hate to make you choose sides, but we need to know where you stand. Check out the breeds below, and sound off in the comments. Unless, of course, you don't choose to join the glorious army of Shiba Inu and Friends. If that's the case, you can keep your stupid opinions to yourself.

Continue reading Nintendogs + Cats 3DS breeds revealed, tears Joystiq staff apart

Nintendogs + Cats 3DS breeds revealed, tears Joystiq staff apart originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 12 Feb 2011 18:00:00 EST. But instead of being distributed over the Internet like most non-cartridge DSi games, Nintendogs will be distributed on the new iQue DSi when it launches in China. That's right, instead of a cartridge, it's being delivered on a whole DSi.

The iQue DSi will launch in China (with piracy-averting free Nintendogs) on December 15. Like other regions, iQue will offer 1,000 free DSi Points to new buyers, which they can spend on games including Paper Plane, Bird and Beans, the clock apps, and WarioWare: Snapped.
And, of course, we know that hardware sales play a major role in that windfall. But how is Nintendo doing in terms of software sales? Very well, thank you! The company released a list of every million-selling first-party title on the Wii and DS as a supplement (PDF link) to its financial report, with no real surprises other than, perhaps, the monolithic bigness of some of the numbers.

The best-selling Wii title, of course, is Wii Sports, which sold 45.7 million copies across North American and European bundle sales and standalone Japanese sales. The best-selling DS game: Nintendogs, at 22.3 million copies!

We're just happy to see the wonderful Rhythm Heaven on the list, though there is something odd about it: according to the data, Rhythm Heaven sold 140,000 copies outside of Japan -- but the game didn't even come out in the West until April 5, after the end of the fiscal year.

The full list is after the break. Spoiler alert: if you are the type of person who gets angry about Nintendo's success in the expanded market, this will anger you.

[Via Kotaku]
Continue reading Life-to-date sales of the biggest Nintendo games

Life-to-date sales of the biggest Nintendo games originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 08 May 2009 16:00:00 EST. That's not to say that I haven't been disappointed or pleasantly surprised before, but judging a book by its cover is often appropriate with shovelware. Yet I honestly have no clue what this game will have me do. Is it a Nintendogs clone? Will I be tapping dogs on the neck in a tap-happy minigame? Will I have to make that "tchsszzt" noise into the DS's microphone? Let's find out.

Pedigree
One word: UBISOFT. That's correct; the "not-a-bad-company-per-se-but-still-known-for-creating-copious-amounts-of-shovelware" gaming bigwig both developed and published this title.
Continue reading Bury the Shovelware: Cesar Millan's Dog Whisperer

Bury the Shovelware: Cesar Millan's Dog Whisperer originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Jan 2009 12:00:00 EST.
Not many DS games could be adapted into watchable films. Can you imagine Spielberg Presents Meteos, a sentimental tale of three little colored rocks who dream only about visiting space one day? Or Nintendogs: The Movie, a three-hour epic of going for walks, finding a new collar, going for walks, chucking a frisbee, and going for walks? See what we mean? Rubbish.

Then again, the Professor Layton series has the potential to be a very fine movie. Level 5 thinks so, anyway, because it plans to release Professor Layton The First Movie. For now, only a Japanese version is planned, with January 2010 being mooted as a possible release window. This makes perfect sense, obviously, because the games themselves are already full of beautifully-animated, Studio Ghibli-esque cut-scenes. And who is currently working with Level 5 on a forthcoming DS game? Exactly.

Plus, this might be the ideal time to get rid of the stomach-churning pipsqueak that is Luke, preferably through very violent means.
Training, training, training. That's all us Europeans and Aussies want, right? Day in, day out, there we are, blurting "blue" into our handhelds like obedient farmyard animals, and being told that we're doing it wrong and that we're thuddingly simple. We know this happens, because the sales charts tell us so, and now the first DS demos on the local Nintendo Channel (released on all PAL consoles today) reflect the self-improvement obsession that has swept many PAL countries.

So, instead of getting demos of totally rad, new games such as Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword (which is what the U.S. got), we get four training games (only one of which came out this year) from the seven titles available, and adverts for Nintendogs and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. The only bright spot? A couple of tracks from Mario Kart DS, and a Picross demo, but those are hardly fresh titles.

We're not usually the types to look a gift horse in the mouth, but there's a stunning lack of variety on display here, Nintendo. Hit the break for the infuriatingly vanilla list.
Continue reading PAL Nintendo Channel DS demos are training-tastic

PAL Nintendo Channel DS demos are training-tastic originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 30 May 2008 14:00:00 EST. Nintendo is an odd company. While we won't argue the merits of doing something like this, we will argue that Nintendo could've used some new games. Confused? So are we, so let's break it down.

Basically, Nintendo is conducting an hour-long "beginner's class" with Animal Crossing: Wild World and Nintendogs, in the hopes that they can show people how great their really old games are. In all seriousness, we imagine the classes will mostly revolve around introducing the device to skeptical folks, as well as the ease of using the stylus on the touch-screen. It all takes place at ACMI, Screen Pit Room, Federation Square, Flinders Street Melbourne, so if you're anywhere near there this Thursday between 6:00pm - 7:00pm, show up and take some pictures.

Then send those pictures to us!
Nintendo provides game-playing training down under originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 May 2008 16:00:00 EST. Too often for our liking, developers seem desperate to recreate the kind of 3D games we'd find on beefier home consoles, and the results are rarely pretty. This blogger recently got around to trying out Brothers in Arms (on the advice that the game was a technical marvel), and found it to be a mess of treacly frame rates and choppy visuals. If World War II had moved at this pace, we'd still be fighting.

Occasionally, however, 3D on the DS does work, and quite splendidly in some instances. It may sound odd, but I still consider Nintendogs to be one of the best uses of 3D on the platform, simply because it wouldn't have been a tenth as engaging in 2D. How about you, dear reader? What do you consider to be the finest 3D offerings on our humble handheld?
DS Daily: That tricky extra dimension originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 May 2008 09:00:00 EST. Regular Mail scribe and middle England mom Rosie Millard has written about how a Nintendo DS "turned my delightful, curious and funny children into argumentative demons full of aggression." In the 1,000-word article, Millard laments that her blissful domestic existence was disrupted by her offspring squabbling over the console, and knows exactly where the blame lies: the "hideous" DS.

So far, so predictable, but whereas we'd usually be irked by something like this, we actually found most of it amusing. For example, Millard unwittingly admits to purchasing pirated games ("The pale blue, £150 Nintendo finally arrived last November, fresh from Hong Kong, crammed with a 'bundle' of 20 games including Brain Trainer, Fifa 08, and Nintendogs"), while some of the language used is so ridiculously over the top and inflated that we couldn't help but smirk -- apparently, the DS encouraged a "mood [...] of anger, confrontation, pain and frustration." Eyes. Rolling.

Our advice, Rosie? Get a Wii -- they're lots of fun, and more suited to social gaming than the DS. As far-fetched as it seems, maybe you'll even crack a smile and have a go.

[Thanks, Matt!]
DS 'turned kids into monsters' originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 04 May 2008 17:00:00 EST. If anyone would be likely to buy and enjoy a game about taking care of virtual cats, you would expect it to be patrons of a cafe where people pay to spend time in the company of cats. That's why Sega's partnership with Cat Cafe Calico is so brilliant.

The Tokyo cafe has 18 friendly cats (and one dog) "on staff" to hang out and play with cafe customers. It is frequented by people whose apartments or busy lifestyles make a cat of their own impossible. Or people who just really like cats. From March 26th to May 6th, those cat enthusiasts will all receive a Yume Neko DS postcard and seals upon entering Calico, which will be decorated in a Yume Neko DS theme and will play the game's music.
Yume Neko DS promoted to cat lovers originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 05 Mar 2008 11:15:00 EST. At this point, we want to buy it right now, because Sega's trailer is perfect. Except for the whole not one second of gameplay being shown bit. But is the actual game going to be better than cute kittens?

That's right, instead of showing off the game's graphics or features, Sega just created a video of four and a half minutes of cute kittens. We support the adoption of the "kitten footage" style for more game trailers -- we'd rather stare at kittens than know what games are about. If you have a photo and a story to match it with, send both to thedslife at dsfanboy dot com.

We're breaking away from our usual routine this week -- instead of fawning over touching scenes of handheld gamers, we'll look through ten pictures taken from the gamers's point of view. These photographs can reveal a lot about the shutterbugs who took them! We could take the easy route here and resort to writing about hot cakes and/or printing money, but no, we're just going to give it to you straight: in Europe, the DS is really, really popular.

We're not quite talking Japan levels of popularity here -- that would be insane. But it's doing jolly well, regardless. According to a swaggering Nintendo of Europe, the little handheld that could has sold through more than 20 million units in the region, as of the beginning of January.

And that's not all, folks: the games are also shifting in healthy numbers. Throughout the continent, Nintendogs is at the front, pulling furiously on its leash with 8 million sales. Everybody's favorite polygonal professor takes second, having sold 5 million copies of the bonce-honing Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain?, while New Super Mario Bros. grabs bronze with 3 million sales.

Get that conga line formed, people. You know the drill by now.
Well, we're not going in for that this year. Our gift guide will help you find the best gifts in categories the other sites won't cover -- because we just made them up.

Nintendo's indifference towards PAL regions is infamous, but there's arguably less room for complaining when it comes to the DS. See, the DS is (and we do not use this phrase lightly) an importer's dream. It doesn't faff around with region-specific software, there's a huge library of diverse and interesting NTSC-only titles, and the games themselves are cheap. As in, cheaper than they'll be when they arrive in the UK/Europe/Australia six months from now. Frankly, we can't think of a good reason for you not to import.

Which brings us to our latest anti-guide, featuring the five DS-related gifts that PAL regions won't be seeing until 2008 at the earliest -- if ever. All deserve to be imported without hesitation, so read on fellow PAL folk, and prep that credit card!
Continue reading Five gifts that PAL gamers should import this Christmas

Five gifts that PAL gamers should import this Christmas originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 12 Dec 2007 19:30:00 EST.
We know what you're thinking, and yes, the mere fact that this post is related in some way to our feline friends is a good enough reason to break out the lolcats.

But we digress. Ever since the delightful Nintendogs launched and sold around a gazillion copies, we've been patiently waiting for a feline-based sequel, a follow-up that would undoubtedly attract the cat-loving half of the civilized world to Nintendo's handheld. Alas, "Nintencats" has (bafflingly) failed to emerge, so SEGA has dutifully decided to offer us Yume Neko DS, a game that allows players to pet, poke, and play with their cat in much the same way as we mucked around with our mutts in Nintendogs. It's hitting Japan next spring, though there's no news yet on a western localization.

Past the break, we've embedded a pair of trailers, one a demo of the game in action (worth a look, as the cats themselves are nicely animated), and the other a Japanese TV spot for the extremely sinister-looking "Yume Neko Smile," a cuddly toy spin-off from the game that probably comes to life at night to embark on bloodthirsty rampages, leaving nothing in its horrifying wake alive.
Continue reading Nintendo fails to announce Nintencats, SEGA steps in

Nintendo fails to announce Nintencats, SEGA steps in originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 07 Dec 2007 19:00:00 EST. What's a dedicated DS lover to do when two sweet new bundles hit the streets? There's really only one option on the table: shoot a video of the boxes, complete with music and dramatic close-ups. It's just such a random thing (and yet, exactly what we would probably do) that we couldn't resist sharing it with you as part of this week's video spotlight.
Friday Video: Bundles are beautiful originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 23 Nov 2007 20:00:00 EST. Nintendo dished out a press release this morning, declaring that the previous rumor of two new DS Lite bundles hitting in time for Black Friday is, in fact, a reality. These two new bundles (other pictured past the break) will greet eager shoppers looking for the perfect gaming gift. No word on how long they'll be around, but the press release did state that they're limited-edition units, so we wouldn't expect them to be around forever.

So, who's getting one of these new bundles?
Continue reading Nintendo confirms new bundles for the holidays

Nintendo confirms new bundles for the holidays originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 Nov 2007 09:50:00 EST.
We already knew this was coming, but Nintendo affirmed today that we'll be seeing two new DS models on the day after Thanksgiving, and they sent along these sexy new box shots to prove it. The first is a Phantom Hourglass bundle that comes with a "glimmering Gold edition" of the DS. If you're ready to take DS gaming from something you can do in public places to something you can do in dimly-lit public places full of non-judgmental people, this is the package for you.

For the ladies there's the Rose DS (check it out after the break), which comes bundled with Nintendogs. It's the "Best Friends" edition of the game, the one that should be rated M for "Most Adorable Thing Ever". The first, Friend Codes, we can kind of roll with. They're unwieldy, awkward, and let's face it: there are better solutions.

Perhaps they deserve to be there, but the DS's microphone? Not so much. See, we quite like the mic. OK, it's not as widely used as other parts of the handheld's unique feature-set, but we're struggling to swallow the argument that it's one of "gaming's worst ever ideas." Not in a world where the Roll & Rocker exists.

Two things seem to irk Reich about the DS's mic: that it can be embarrassing to use in public, and that not enough game developers have used it well. We partially agree with his first point -- e-nun-ci-at-ing "Buh-loo!" into your handheld while on the bus to work would make most people feel like a bit of a nugget. Then again, nobody is forcing you to play such games in public. It's all a question of choosing an appropriate location.

Secondly, plenty of games find a good use for the microphone. Being able to yell "Objection!" just before you start dismantling your rival in the Ace Attorney games is a fantastic touch! Summoning your hound in Nintendogs with a whistle or a shout of their name is equally nifty. My French Coach, which Alisha is covering all this week, makes terrific use of the microphone, allowing users to record themselves, in a bid to achieve greater fluency.

In other words, Mr Reich, we're going to have to politely disagree with you.
Man lays into DS microphone, we leap to heroic defense originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 Nov 2007 20:40:00 EST. It turns out that Europe won't be getting those rather ace new DS bundles that we originally covered on Monday. Eurogamer got on the dog and bone to Nintendo's European arm to inquire about whether the Zelda and Nintendogs-themed handhelds would see the light of day here, and promptly got a big fat "No"/"Non"/"Nein"/"Nyet" for their troubles.

In fact, yours truly was tempted to use this news as a platform for a wild-eyed rant about how Nintendo hates Europe (and how that's actually quite strange, all things considered) but heck, that particular horse has been firmly flogged into a fine pulp by now.
Yummy new DS bundles not coming to Europe originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 02 Nov 2007 09:50:00 EST. Nintendo's making a final push to indoctrinate the rest of the world's pet-deprived tweens and twenty-something geeks, according to a new Sears ad. Come "Black Friday," two more DS Lite models will hit retail ($150 ea.), each branded and bundled with a corresponding game.

There's the metallic pink <strike>Pound Puppies</strike> Nintendogs case, complete with (bloody?) paw print and game -- which reminds us, our lil' pixelated Shih Tzu hasn't been fed in about two years ... Anyways, moving on: there's also the gold-sprayed Zelda unit, (spotted a few weeks ago and) bundled with Phantom Hourglass, featuring the Triforce logo for those of us not quite ready for the more-permanent expression of our faith.

[Via DS Fanboy]
Two new DS Lite models, both branded & bundled originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 30 Oct 2007 13:38:00 EST. This detail from a Sears ad has revealed two new DS hardware configurations. We already knew of the gold Phantom Hourglass box, but this is the firmest confirmation we've seen from an actual retailer.

More interesting is the reveal of a metallic pink Nintendogs: Best Friends Edition bundle for $149.99. We don't know if this is a Sears exclusive, but the little ad clipping makes no mention of exclusivity. We doubt it, since one of our intrepid commenters hinted at exactly this hardware for GameStop as well. A new hardware bundle for a two-year-old game? Seems ludicrous on the outset, but it'll probably sell a (few million) bundle(s).

[Thanks, Steve 3.2!]

Sears Black Friday ad reveals two new DS Lites originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 29 Oct 2007 10:40:00 EST. For a lot of us, this updated list of current and forthcoming "primary" Nintendo releases doesn't offer much, but for European gamers, there's a lot to speculate on. We keep seeing this DS Novel pop up, but what exactly is it? When it's shown up before on lists, there was also a "temporary title" tag attached, but no longer, though other titles on the list are tagged as such. Is it settled? Is it just the e-book reader? Literature-themed nongame? Sounds like it might be worth importing for litgeeks in the rest of the world. If you know something we poor Americans don't, please clue us in!

In other news, Nintendogs continues to lead the pack among DS titles in sales, with Pokémon and New Super Mario Bros. lagging a little behind.
The issue of which pet-care game is the best is much too divisive to solve here. Even splitting them up into categories: horse, cat, hamster, etc. (as well as the non-pet care games involving human babies) is just much too controversial for us to make our own call.

GamesRadar's staff, hoping to put this issue to rest, turned to the EBGames user comments for each game to determine which was the best. Using this resource, they were able to get expert reviews, like this one for Nintendogs: "this is wat i said to my mom when it came out! " o.m.g i really need to get this game." she said ok."

To be fair, a lot of the commenters, especially for these games, are children, and probably don't need to be made fun of. But some of the comments run a little psychotic: "I had my nintendo ds for a while now and i have been ready for this moment," a commenter said about Imagine Babyz. What rituals must one go through to prepare for Imagine Babyz?

In checking out the weekly wi-fi stats, one user over at GAF noticed that two offline titles had shown up in the findings. Utilizing a user-created program, it was found that Nintendogs connected to wi-fi 6 different times and Yoshi's Island connected 4 times over two different days.

Now, whether this is misinterpreted information or the first signs of a re-issuing of these games with wi-fi compatibility is anyone's guess. What we wonder about, however, is if these games are re-issued, will anyone pick them up?
Nintendogs and Yoshi's Island going Wi-Fi? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 28 Aug 2007 14:00:00 EST. Those who love Nintendogs and feel compelled to take care of tiny, virtual animals will be given a whole set of new ones to care for come this November. Featuring a variety of different animals, including dogs, cats and horses, Animal Paradise tasks the player with not only feeding and walking, but bathing and playing with them, as well.

The game also uses a popular pet photographer from Japan in Yoneo Morita. But for our (hypothetical) pet simulator money, Love Cat Life wins over Nintendo's masterpiece, for mostly hilarious reasons:

Simulated litterboxes

Riding a little cat-sized truck over a ramp

Meowing music game!

We started off being sarcastic, but we just convinced ourselves. It was the music game that did it.
Love Cat Life shows love for dogs, too originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 Jun 2007 14:15:00 EST. Basically, it's Nintendolphins. You train the dolphin to do tricks, which you are scored on. You can also learn about dolphins and take some dolphin-related quizzes. Most importantly, you can use the stylus to toss fish at them.

If you're squealing with delight at the idea of training a virtual dolphin on your DS, then it's official. You love dolphin. After the credits we go for a little drive Mario Kart style.

Check the video after the break.
Continue reading Nintendogs escape cartridge, still cute in reality

Nintendogs escape cartridge, still cute in reality originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 04 May 2007 13:00:00 EST.
This is one crafter's answer to all the criticisms about the DS Lite being too bulky and sturdy. Or it would be, if those criticisms existed and weren't crazy.

Junyang's papercraft DS Lite is actually part of a series of miniaturized electronic devices, any of which would make a very nice (and very small) display piece. But we especially love when paper and glue come together to honor our favorite handheld. And look at that teensy Nintendogs cartridge! It actually fits into the cartridge slot. That's the kind of detail work that has us rushing to print our own and get started, after we edit the image to change Nintendogs to Elite Beat Agents.

Knowing our stumpy, clumsy fingers, the end result of our folding and gluing won't be quite so photogenic. But hey, that's no reason not to try it yourself!

Because everybody has it. Nintendo is reporting that 13.6 million copies of the game have been sold worldwide. Compare that to Brain Age and its sequel, which sold a combined 12 million copies. We knew Nintendogs was massive, but we kind of didn't realize how massive. As we alluded to in the title, we wonder how many of those copies are still getting daily use.

Another interesting tidbit from the financial report: Nintendo made 2.1 billion yen (about $17.5 million) last year from their non-video-game products, including playing cards. And before you ask, they probably did count Nintendogs as a video game.
13.6 million Nintendogs are being neglected right now originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 27 Apr 2007 10:00:00 EST. These aren't necessarily the best games, or the best-selling games, but their choices for those titles that have been the most influential on gaming as a whole. And while we're sure many of their picks will be questioned and debated to the point of exhaustion, we're really only interested in one small part of the list -- that is, the only DS title to make the cut. Nintendogs weighs in at #44. Does this mean it's the most influential of all DS games? Since it's the only one on the list, it would seem so, and while we agree that Nintendogs certainly advanced gaming, we might argue that since the franchise draws heavily on both Animal Crossing and the digital pet phenomenon, it's hard to see Nintendogs as a "focusing lens" that forever changed gaming. Does that mean Nintendogs did nothing new? Of course it did. But the idea of a needy digipet existed long before Nintendo popularized the portable pooches with their array of titles. GamePro says "first" doesn't matter -- it's being the folks that do it right that matters -- Nintendogs certainly did a lot of things right, but is it the most important game on the DS? It's an interesting question.

And we have a question of our own -- where's Brain Age? The game that started the training phenomenon is easily equally influential, or perhaps even more so. But we won't argue; rather, we admire the effort that goes into such a list, and after skimming the comments on the article, we don't envy the flood of angry e-mails that are surely flowing into the mailboxes of the writers.
Is Nintendogs the most 'important' DS game? originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 25 Apr 2007 15:00:00 EST.
