Steel Wool Games was founded by Sequoia Blankenship, Andrew Dayton, Jonathan Hoffman, Joshua Qualtieri and Jason Topolski, all of whom work at Pixar by day and now develop games by night. Steel Wool's first game, Flyhunter, is due out in 2013 from PC and PlayStation publisher Ripstone.

"We have an internal phrase that we use to describe our style: 'Grimsical,'" says Dayton, Steel Wool's executive producer. "It's our fundamental principle as a company. We create worlds that are funny and whimsical but dipped in gritty tones." That certainly sounds like Pixar.

Steel Wool has an additional team of 12 working on Flyhunter and all things grimsical, so while it's an after-hours studio for the founders, this is a full-time operation.
Continue reading Pixar artists form Steel Wool Games, Flyhunter due out in 2013

Pixar artists form Steel Wool Games, Flyhunter due out in 2013 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 19 Mar 2013 19:15:00 EST. Aside from a lenticular invitation, there's nothing else concrete on Disney Infinity right now.

According to a Polygon source, what we're going to see is an open-world sandbox game with characters from Disney and Pixar. It mixes elements of Minecraft, such as building, with Just Cause's open-world gameplay - if you played Toy Story 3: The Video Game, it sounds reminiscent of that game's Toy Box mode. In fact, "Toy Box" is a codename for a project that sounds an awful lot like these rumors about Disney Infinity.

Disney Infinity is rumored to be on multiple platforms, including current consoles, iOS and Android devices, with development duties falling squarely on Utah-based Avalanche Software, the same developer responsible for Toy Story 3: The Game. According to Polygon's report, the mobile versions of Disney Infinity lacked the building aspects seen in the console versions. It also suggests that Disney considers the game as a "platform" to be expanded with more characters and scenarios as time goes by.
Rumor: Disney Infinity is a sandbox game for consoles, iOS and Android originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 20 Dec 2012 17:45:00 EST. It will extend into mobile and online gaming realms, perhaps offering tie-in games on a number of different platforms, made for different audiences.

Disney Interactive has been struggling lately to find a real hit, especially after the lukewarm reception to the company's Epic Mickey. But the House of Mouse has had some good news from the online and mobile divisions lately, where big titles like Club Penguin have worked with breakout mobile hits like Where's My Water? to prop up the ailing Interactive group.

It sounds like the plan is to better incorporate future console titles like Toy Box with the online and mobile strengths. We'll have to wait and see just what this project turns out to be; it sounds like the official announcement isn't set until next year.
'Toy Box' to bring Pixar and Disney characters together in game originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 23 Oct 2012 20:45:00 EST. One of the games rumored to be canceled was an unannounced Disney IP, which most believed to be THQ's tie-in with Pixar's Brave.

Brave the video game today has a rating on the Australian classification database, published by THQ, developed by Behaviour Interactive and rated PG for mild violence. A senior source at Disney also told Develop that there was no reason to believe Brave was canceled, although THQ has yet to officially announce the existence of the project, Develop says.
THQ adaptation of Pixar's 'Brave' pops up in Australian ratings originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 19 Jan 2012 14:30:00 EST. Kinect Rush: A Disney Pixar Adventure brings five modern-classic animated films into real, still-animated life this March. The following screens offer a glimpse of each movie -- Cars, Toy Story, The Incredibles, Up and Ratatouille -- and how they'll transfer to motion controls. We're not entirely sure which full-body gesture is required for "riding sewage like it's a boat," but it appears we'll get the chance to find out with Kinect Rush. Thanks, Pixar.
What's better than a Kinect game styled after a Disney Pixar movie? Try a Kinect game styled after five Disney Pixar movies! The overly branded Kinect Rush: A Disney Pixar Adventure is exactly that, offering up a series of Kinect-enabled minigames centered around five Disney Pixar movies: Toy Story, The Incredibles, Up, Ratatouille, and ... Cars. Well, four out of five ain't too bad.

As you can see in the trailer above, it looks pretty fun if you happen to be a little kid who really likes waving your arms around. You can see another shot of Woody and Buzz waving said arms around in the gallery below. Kinect Rush will be available on March <strike>12</strike> 20, 2012 (for $49.99), and just a few weeks later, your kids will probably have some killer triceps.
As if the Toy Story universe wasn't endearing and heartwarming enough, Pixar's plastic pals will be upping the adorable ante by donning sackboy skins and setting foot on LittleBigPlanet 2. Come August 8, Buzz Lightyear, Slinky Dog, Rex, and Hamm costumes will be available individually for $1.99, or as a toy-chest of memories for $5.99.

Costumes aren't the only thing The Claw managed to grab however, as a Toy Story Level Kit will also be available for $5.99, featuring 9 new levels and 2 new music tracks, as well as materials, decorations, stickers, and an Alien costume exclusive to the pack. If your concern for the well-being of mother nature has already led you to purchase a hybrid automobile, you might want to think of incorporating your environmentalist considerations into other aspects of your shopping habits. For instance, if you were thinking about picking up Avalanche's video game adaptation of Toy Story 3, perhaps you'd be interested in the title's "Hybrid Premium Edition," which includes the game and the original Toy Story film on a single Blu-ray disc for $64.99.
A recent PlayStation.Blog post announced that the bundle will be released to retailers this week, so keep an eye out for it at your local brick and mortar in the coming days. In the meantime just think about all the endangered species you're preserving by placing the two products into one container.
Toy Story 3 Hybrid Premium Edition contains PS3 game and original movie originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 16 Aug 2010 14:30:00 EST. Disney Interactive Studios has been making a lot of noise about refining and improving its approach to licensed games, and while Toy Story 3: The Video Game is still meant for the younger members of Pixar's vast following, it's the best evidence yet that Disney is serious about trying to use licenses right.

I got to play the game at a recent pre-E3 event, and it was a solid, kid-friendly experience, with bright and beautiful graphics surrounding intuitive racing and platforming mechanics. With innovative features like a very dynamic difficulty system and lots and lots of collectibles and game modes, Disney's Avalanche Studios has created something here that you, as someone who enjoys fine game design, can actually be proud to have your kids play.
How adorable is this? Just when you thought you might be done Sackboying around, they find a way to suck you right back in. This time it's a Disney/Pixar inspired Incredibles costume and level packs coming on April 8th. According to the PlayStation blog, "This huge pack features NINE costumes: all of The Incredibles family (including a "Retro" Mr. Incredible sporting his classic blue costume), their allies Frozone and Edna Mode, and their arch nemesis, Syndrome."

You'll be able to purchase individual costumes as well, and download the Incredibles Level Kit that includes locations from the movie, and all the materials used to make it. Pixar may not have given us a sequel to The Incredibles yet, but now you can make your own. We can't wait to see what Syndrome looks like. Is Disney going to move their entire universe into LBP some day? Pirates of the Caribbean vs. The Incredibles, here we come. Sony has added two titles to the PlayStation Move's launch lineup that we haven't seen before. Not only will you be able to get your Move on in Slider, Sports Champions and all of the other announced launch titles, but we can now add Disney-Pixar's Toy Story 3 and Brunswick Pro Bowling into the mix as well. Toy Story 3 is of course a tie-in to the movie, and Brunswick is in there because you can't have a motion controller in 2010 without a bowling game attached.

No seriously, you can't. Which is weird, because the future of gaming sure does look a lot like the 2007 of gaming. Only with better graphics.
Did you expect any less? Did you expect that there would be a movie called Toy Story 3 and that there wouldn't be an Avalanche Software-developed tie-in game available on Wii, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, DS and PSP? Oh, yeah, there's an iPhone/iPod Touch app too that should arrive with the others on June 15.

For all our macho posturing, we're actually intrigued by a touted "Toy Box" mode which is supposed to be an "open-world, sandbox style of play." What does Disney mean by that? Well, according to the release, it's "designed to replicate the universal experience of playing with toys as a kid" and "brings cowboys, space rangers, dinosaurs, and little green aliens together to create adventures only possible in a child's imagination. Kids, families and fans will dive into Andy's toy box with creativity driving their own stories and adventures."

... Guys, if you haven't designed that part yet, just say so. It's OK, you've got plenty of time.
Yes, there's a Toy Story 3: The Game for that console originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 16 Feb 2010 12:30:00 EST. Mythic Entertainment's Mike "Daarken" Lim and Dreamworks' Leif Jeffers aren't the type of gentlemen to sit around idly while a friend is in need. When Lim's girlfriend (Cat) was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year at the age of 25, the two quickly hatched a plan to help her wade through the sea of medical bills that a bilateral mastectomy and 16 weeks of chemotherapy can quickly accrue. That plan quickly turned into an art auction named "beautifulgrim."

Artists from all over the game and film industries have contributed to the project -- from Blizzard and Rockstar on the gaming side to Pixar and Disney on the film side, to name only a few. Lim is hoping to hold the auction "sometime next Spring" in either San Francisco or New York City, though plans are still a bit up in the air. " We are still in the process of looking for a venue, so the date and location of the opening reception is still unknown," Lim told us. He also encouraged people to check out some of the already submitted works on the project's Facebook page. Any money earned in the auction beyond what Cat requires will be given to "a breast cancer related charity to be determined by the artists in the coming weeks."

Though you only have one day left to tell Lim if you'd like to contribute, final art for the show isn't due until February 1. We wish them the best of luck.
Dropping knowledge about its Q2 earnings for this year, THQ has revealed that UFC 2009 Undisputed and Red Faction: Guerrilla have both become multi-million dollar franchises for the publisher. With these two, along with a game based on the recent Pixar film Up, THQ enjoyed three of the top ten best-sellers for the month of June.

UFC 2009 Undisputed wrestled the competition to the ground throughout May and June, shipping a combined 2.9 million units worldwide. Red Faction: Guerrilla also fared well, shipping a combined one million units across the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms. Not only did THQ dominate the US in June, but the publisher enjoyed the top spot in the UK June charts with everyone's favorite testicle-punching simulator, UFC 2009.
UFC 2009 and Red Faction: Guerrilla bolster THQ profits originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 28 Jul 2009 18:00:00 EST. Disney/Pixar's latest animated film is now a Trophy-filled PS3 game. Have a kid play it for you ... or be daring and play it yourself. Check out the Trophies after the break.

Demos for Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection and Up are now available on the marketplace. Coincidentally, the Sonic demo downloads ultra fast. However, the Up demo, which is over a gigglebyte, downloads about as slow as its protaganist can walk with that tennis ball cane. Actually, the Up demo is quite enjoyable -- in a Lego Star Wars kind of way.

The Sonic demo includes trials of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Streets of Rage 3 and Space Harrier. Playing the demos reminds us that nostalgia isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Update: In case it was missed, Wolverine went live last night. Thanks for the backup, B1ggrandall.

[Add the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection demo to your download queue]
[Add the UP Demo to your download queue ]
Demos: Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, Up originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 01 May 2009 10:45:00 EST. THQ, the unparalleled master of licensed gaming adaptations, is adding another notch to the ol' development belt. In a recent press release, the company announced its Heavy Iron Studios branch will be bringing Disney Pixar's upcoming animated film, Up, to a gaming console near you. That is, assuming you live near an Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, DS, PSP, PC or Mac.

It will likely be in the same vein gameplay and quality-wise as Heavy Iron's other Pixar projects, Ratatouille and Wall-E. According to the press release, the game will follow septugenarian Carl Fredricksen and his young accomplice, Russell, as they fall into all manner of wacky hijinx in the undiscovered jungles of South America. So basically, it's like Uncharted, but with less mercenary murdering. Or maybe more! We don't know. We haven't seen the movie yet.
THQ adapting Pixar's 'Up' for every gaming platform ever originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Mar 2009 15:15:00 EST.
When it comes to designing games, Warren Spector isn't known for doing a Mickey Mouse job. But the iconic Disney character may very well be the star of his Junction Point Studios' current project, confirmed in July as a "collaboration with folks from Disney Feature Animation and Pixar."

According to a post on Gamasutra, "concept art and information" the site has gotten its eyes on reveal a title codenamed Epic Mickey, which is described as having "a distinctly shadowed, steampunk vibe." The game is likely the same project Spector and company have been working on since at least June 2007, and which the Deus Ex designer has said would elicit claims by hardcore gamers that he'd "sold out." In backing up its report, the site references an EGM rumor from March that suggests Junction Point's project will allow Disney to go up against "a certain pesky plumber" with "the mouse himself."

If true, Spector wouldn't be the first legendary designer to work with Walt Disney's most famous creation; God of War creator David Jaffe co-designed 1994's Mickey Mania for Sony Imagesoft.

Almost exactly one year after announcing that Disney Interactive Studios acquired his Junction Point Studios at last year's E3, Warren Spector - the famed game designer with his hands on everything from System Shock to Thief to Deus Ex - announced via his blog that his studio's first project will in fact be a "collaboration with folks from Disney Feature Animation and Pixar." He's not ready to say anymore (though he did say that he would "say nothing" just before telling us about the Disney / Pixar info) but we're holding out for some sort of announcement at E3 this week. Movie tie-in? New video game IP developed by Pixar and Disney? Have you ever seen a GameCube as cute as this? Before you say "yes" and provide a million and ten links of cuter mods, just look into Wall-E's eyes. You'll make him cry! And we all know what happens when water gets on a GameCube -- it goes to console heaven. So, for Wall-E's sake, just let it be.

Based on the character in the upcoming Disney Pixar film, this adorable mod was made with children's toys, Plexiglas, tubes, rods, plastic, metal, and acrylic paint. Oh, and let's not forget the GameCube. With THQ handling duties on previous Pixar films' game adaptation Ratatouille, it comes as little surprise that they're taking care of business regarding the upcoming game based on the soon-to-release film WALLo.E (short for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class). The story follows a small robot (WALLo.E, natch) on a journey of self-discovery.

The movie is currently scheduled for a release this summer.

[Via Joystiq]
THQ handling game duties for upcoming Pixar film originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 03 Jan 2008 11:15:00 EST.
With THQ still riding the wave of financial fortitude created by its adaptations of Disney Pixar's Cars and Ratatouille animated features, the company has unsurprisingly confirmed plans to give the film studio's next feature, WALLo.E, similar treatment. Versions of the movie-made-game, which centers on a story of a robot named WALLo.E (short for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) and his journey of self discovery, should begin to populate store shelves for every platform under the sun in time for the film's summer release.

This game is the second title, following last year's Ratatouille, to stem from a new four game deal between THQ and Pixar, meaning that we expect these two will remain in bed together over the next couple of years at the very least. THQ hasn't shed many details on how the WALLo.E games will play out, though given previous releases, we expect a handful of levels lifted from the film, partnered with mind numbing icon collecting and actors delivering lines with all of the enthusiasm of a cheese sandwich. Excited yet?

THQ plans games based on Pixar's WALL?E, nobody surprised originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 03 Jan 2008 08:57:00 EST. The Best of Blu-ray: Action is probably the best of the bundles despite the inclusion of the hilariously awful Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut, but with the newer, gorier Troy Director's Cut, Wyatt Earp and Blood Diamond, you're getting some really great movies at a really great price of only $59.
Blu-ray movie releases for the week of November 4 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 04 Nov 2007 14:00:00 EST. Publisher THQ has posted net sales of more than $1 billion in their 2007 fiscal year, reportedly their 12th consecutive year of revenue growth. According to their annual financial report (PDF file), the company also managed to ship eight titles that exceeded one million units in sales. Their secret to success? Licensed titles.

The annual report revealed that THQ's focus was 80% licensed intellectual property and 20% owned IP -- a 4-to-1 ratio. Key achievements include shipping 8 million units of Disney/Pixar's Cars, 4 million units of WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2007 and 4 million units combined of Nickelodeon franchises.

THQ did establish two franchises this fiscal year, Saint's Row and Company of Heroes, and this upcoming fiscal year, THQ intends to increase its focus on owned IPs to a 33% share on the pie graph -- that's now only a 2-to-1 ratio of licensed-to-owned IP.

Sure, licensed games may not be the most anticipated titles (or even the ones to receive the most coverage from the gaming press), but they do wonders to a publisher's bottom line.
THQ profits show power of licensing originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 03 Jul 2007 14:15:00 EST. Still, we can get a good look at how the game feels and some of the misadventures you'll partake in as Rémy. Fortunately, the game seems to retain the atmosphere that Pixar puts forth in the film. So, after having played Cars on Xbox 360, how do you think this game will fare as a kids game. More importantly (to some), do you think the achievement difficulty will fall somewhere between Cars and Open Season?
Ratatoille (rat?a?too?ee) Gameplay Footage originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 05 Mar 2007 13:15:00 EST.
Not a lot of info is out yet on Pixar's summer release Ratatouille, but THQ has let out word that before the movie hits theaters in June, you'll be able to play the game adaptation on your PSP. There aren't much details about any version of the game besides the next-gen one, but if the PSP version is similar, it'll be an action platformer. Will the collective Ratatouille games be the best selling game of this year like Cars was last year? Either way, I'm looking forward to the movie and hoping the game is a worthwhile experience as well.

The new studio marks the fourth that Disney has bought or started up on their own in the past two years at a tune of more than $200 million dollars.

While Nintendo puts the emphasis on fun in their games instead of next-gen processing power, Disney could be a great fit with them. Both Nintendo and Disney skew heavily towards younger audiences, and those aren't the kind of gamers who'll be concerned with how many polygons it takes to render Goofy's hat into a photorealistic prop. They have sequels in the immediate future: another Chicken Little game comes out around Wii-launch, and you can probably expect another Cars video game.

It'll be interesting to see what Fall Line can produce on their own. Maybe they'll port Kingdom Hearts to the Wii. That would be worth a wait.

[Thanks, Bored]
Disney forms Nintendo games studio originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Nov 2006 09:30:00 EST. The litany of offenses is long and altogetherstinky: Enter the Matrix sucked big time, Bad Boys: Miami Takedown was so atrocious it probably madeMartin Lawrence wish his career died sooner, and don't even get me started on E.T. And while I can't deny thesuccessful turns titles like The Chronicles of Riddick and King Kong had, I just wasn't very excitedwhen I heard that Pixar's upcoming animated film "Cars" would be sending off a little bundle of joy to thePSP.

Chances are it'll be a kiddie game which, with the exception of Lego Star Wars, alreadyguarantees that no one above the mental age of four will touch it. So unless I happen to befall some tragic fate whereI revert back to infancy, you won't find me drooling spit over a copy of this game when it launches, which will quitepossibly be around the time the movie hits theatres, as history (and earnings figures) suggest.
"Cars" on the PSP?
