Once the British company finishes up with Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee New 'n' Tasty, which is expected to launch sometime in Q4 of this year, its future is completely open.

Oddworld Inhabitants has created a public poll to see which game fans would most like Just Add Water devote itself to next. The available choices include (but are not limited to) Oddworld: The Hand of Odd, SligStorm, The Brutal Ballad of Fangus Klot, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath 2, an unnamed, completely new Oddworld property and even Oddworld: Squeek's Oddysee, which would be the first proper continuation of the pentalogy since Munch's Oddysee launched over a decade ago.

Oddworld Inhabitants doesn't guarantee that the fans' ultimate choice will absolutely, positively be Just Add Water's selected project, but it's swell of them to ask.
Oddworld dev asks which game you want next originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 18 Jan 2013 22:45:00 EST. The designer has posted a poll on his personal blog to discover whether his cuboid constituents would feel comfortable with the company collecting various types of anonymous data from its players.

Currently, Mojang only tracks when a player logs into the game. Notch's proposal is to also track "non-private data" like gameplay-session length, your PC's OS type, whether you're playing in single or multiplayer mode and whether you're playing via the client or the web applet. The collected information would then be shared with the community, "as usual."

"Naturally, the data sent will be fully anonymous," said Notch. "So it wouldn't contain any session information or your user name, and it wouldn't send any sensitive information that you might not want to share." To be perfectly honest, we're fairly surprised this kind of data wasn't already being collected. If you're part of the Minecraft nation, you can let your voice be heard by voting for or against anonymous data collection here.
Notch asks community for permission to track player data in Minecraft originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 25 Jan 2012 14:50:00 EST. Citizen Skywatch has all the earmarks of a placeholder site (zero information, zero content, great font, etc), but a placeholder for what? A whois search reveals that the domain is registered to Take-Two Interactive, and that its listed physical address is the same address listed for Rockstar's official site, so we can safely infer that it will at least be tangentially related to games. Probably.

What do you think? Is Citizen Skywatch an unannounced IP from the folks that gave us Red Dead Redemption? Perhaps it's the fledgling seed of an ARG, silently waiting to bombard us with quadruple-encrypted photos and cyphers? Only time will tell, but for now, join our rampant speculation by voting in this here poll:
View Poll

What is Citizen Skywatch? originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 14 Aug 2011 21:00:00 EST. During an interview with PlayStation Blog, Metal Gear mogul and transfarring technorati Hideo Kojima dropped a crucial truth-bomb about the future of Snatcher, his cyberpunk cult-classic.

With L.A. Noire's brain-bustingly successful existence as an adventure game, and with Deus Ex: Human Revolution bringing cyberpunk back into the limelight, Kojima was asked whether or not he thinks the world is ready for another Snatcher. "I would love to do something like Snatcher," he said, "but I do not have the time or the means to do so. But if anyone else would like to develop it, I would love it."

It's sad to hear that the series' progenitor won't be returning to Neo Kobe City anytime soon, but at least die-hard Snatcher fans (Snatchies, we call ourselves) can look forward to a radio drama based on the game. What do you think? Should Snatcher be handed off to another developer, or left as-is?
View Poll

Kojima on Snatcher: 'If anyone else would like to develop it, I would love it.' originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 16 Jul 2011 12:00:00 EST. Microsoft has put an interesting turn on its weekly rotation of discounted items on Xbox Live -- the Spotlight tab on the console's dashboard currently includes a poll which will let users choose which of a handful of items they'd like to have marked down for an undisclosed week in October. These discounts include 33 percent off DeathSpank, half off Perfect Dark, or similar markdowns on DLC for Dragon Age: Origins, Trials HD and Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

It would be unethical for us to use our considerable internet power to get you to pick the thing that we'd like to pick up at a discounted price, so we'll refrain from doing so. The non-profit, family-centric organization known as Common Sense Media recently published the results of a nationwide poll conducted by Zogby International, which asked 2,100 parents about their stance on the contested California law that would ban the sale of "offensively violent" games to minors. According to a press release from the group, 72 percent of respondents support the ban, while 75 percent would "rate the video game industry negatively when it comes to how they protect kids from violent video games."

Said Common Sense Media founder James Steyer: "What we've learned from this poll is that parents want to be the ones who decide which games their kids play, not the video game industry."

Of course, the Supreme Court isn't ruling on who decides which games kids play. The court's ruling on whether First Amendment protections can be waived for games deemed by ... someone to be too violent, formalizing a policy already adopted by major retailers into a California state law. Parents, as far as we know, still have the final say over what media their kids are allowed to consume -- not the video game industry, the ESRB, Governor Schwarzenegger or even the Supreme Court.

Then again, when you support your position with videos like the one posted after the jump (the link to which was included in Common Sense's press release), we can understand why parents might lose the equanimity required to make that distinction.
Continue reading Common Sense Media: 72 percent of parents support proposed Calif. violent game law

Common Sense Media: 72 percent of parents support proposed Calif. violent game law originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 13 Sep 2010 22:15:00 EST. How do you feel about Led Zeppelin getting their own Rock Band title? Maybe you'd be happier with Pink Floyd or The Eagles? Perhaps U2? Yeah, none of those sound particularly enthralling to us either. Thankfully, Harmonix gave us the option to write in our own choice (Flock of Seagulls, duh!) for a possible future artist-specific Rock Band title via a recent poll offered on the developer's forums. Not interested in more one-group/artist RB titles? That's also an option!

Harmonix explains the poll as a way to interact with its community and solicit fan response to future titles that are being considered. "With the release of Green Day: Rock Band just a few days away, we wanted to take the opportunity to ask all of you to tell us about which other artists you might want to see as the focus of future artist specific games." As you might imagine, though, the company says it's not planning on making any of these games for sure just yet. "This survey isn't a guarantee that Harmonix is going to make games based on any of these bands, but community feedback is and always has been absolutely invaluable to us in determining our focus within the world of Rock Band as we move forward." We're holding out hope that a group of hardcore Scott Stapp fans aren't secretly plotting to overwhelm the poll with requests for Creed: Rock Band.
Australia's Federal Home Affairs group recently published a poll which may turn the heads on a few of the nation's governmental bodies. Out of the survey's 59,678 participants, 98.2 percent said they would support the oft-proposed addition of an R18+ rating for video games in the region.

Of course, more than half of the participants in said poll were turned on to it by an in-store promotion at select Australian EB Games. A somewhat more balanced selection of special interest groups were also allowed to respond to the survey, and only 53 percent showed support for the mature rating. By our amateur calculations, the actual percentage of Australian citizens who support the rating falls somewhere between the two. How about 86.3 percent? It's a totally made-up number, but ... it just seems right, doesn't it?
Report: 98 percent of Australians in support of R18+ rating originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 09 May 2010 21:00:00 EST. Turn 10 is giving players a chance to vote for the vehicles that will be included in a future Forza Motorsport 3 DLC release. Running until January 29, a poll on car enthusiast site Jalopnik.com features 120 vehicles for players to choose from, focusing specifically on "iconic" and "classic" rides.

The partnership with Jalopnik doesn't end there; March's Forza 3 DLC pack will feature the most "coveted 2009 and 2010 models" as chosen by the site's editors. If you're looking for your favorite whip to make the cut, you best make your click. Wait, what's this? The Batmobile is not on the list? Cats and dogs, sleeping -- well, you know the drill. Blizzard introduced faction transfers to World of Warcraft last week, and as you might imagine, it has us WoW.com folks in a tizzy. Trolls becoming Humans? We certainly hope you're feeling altruistic today, dearest readers, because we need your help. As you've probably heard, the oft-rumored PS3 Slim is ... well, rumored to be announced next week at GamesCom. Before Sony's keynote at the event, we'd like to test the waters to find out exactly what you guys would want from a svelter Sony console, and whether you even think it exists.

There's a few polls asking these questions and more posted after the jump. If you've got a few minutes, we'd love your input.

Update: We've closed the polls and posted the results after the jump. Don't freak out, guys. We know how worried you were when we told you that interest in Modern Warfare 2 was waning without the warm embrace of that familiar Call of Duty brand name. According to Nielsen's Video Game Tracking service, interest in the shooter has substantially improved following the association of Infinity Ward's work with Activision's recognizable franchise.

Three different consumer interest fields Nielsen tracked -- "Aided Awareness," "Definite Interest in Purchasing," and "Total Positive Interest in Purchasing" -- increased drastically from the week of July 6 (before the title was modified) to the week of July 13 (post-name change). It's just like Bill Shakespeare said: "A rose by any other name may smell as sweet, but a rose that's clearly endorsed by Activision will sell way better." We're pretty sure that's how that goes.
Interest in Modern Warfare 2 spikes with Call of Duty branding originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 21 Jul 2009 23:30:00 EST.
Click for bigger, awesomer Japanese Xbox 360 poll art

Even though Xbox 360s aren't flying off of shelves in Japan, the console's perception is surprisingly positive in the country, an ASCII Media Works poll states. (Perhaps not so surprising, actually, given that fewer 360s purchased equals fewer 360s RRODed and E74ed.) The poll asked folks (in Japan) to rate each current console in six different categories: value for money; variety of interesting software; quality of visuals; external design; size/weight of console; and number of acquaintances who also owned the console. And, as Joystiq headlines would have you believe, the Xbox 360 came out on top with a combined 78.3 points out of a maximum of 100. It was also the most played system, averaging 28.8 hours of use a week.

Tied at 70.6 points, PS3 and Wii fared a bit lower. The biggest draw for the PS3, naturally, was its visual quality, but the Wii had no standout category, receiving average marks across the board. DS and PSP were also rated, receiving total marks of 72 and 73.2, respectively. The DS received positive nods for its interesting software, while the PSP received props for its visuals.

Still, many are simply overlooking the most important takeaway from this poll: the awesome image featured in this post.

[Via 1UP]
Survey says: Xbox 360 leads in consumer satisfaction in Japan originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 20 Apr 2009 17:30:00 EST. A survey carried out as part of Microsoft's "Play Smart, Play Safe" campaign shows 60% of kids surveyed wish their folks would become more involved in their gaming. Of all of the children polled, 47% admitted their parents "never" involve themselves with gaming, which is just plain shocking, but not as surprising as the 47% of parents who admitted they sometimes allow their child to play a game rated for a higher age set.

On top of this, only 60% of the parents questioned say they fully understand the rating system (are you serious?). However, 94% of the parents feel personally responsible for checking, so we guess that's something. In an effort to get the kids and 'rents together for some gaming, we've come up with with titles we think the whole family can enjoy. You can find the list past the break.

[Via GI.biz]
Continue reading Study: Kids want their folks involved in gaming

Study: Kids want their folks involved in gaming originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 06 Mar 2009 06:00:00 EST. Over 300 industry professionals have cast their votes to predict the most profitable game companies of 2009 in the "first ever" GI.biz Network Survey. Their answers weren't nearly as exciting, however, with Nintendo garnering a predictable 54.4 percent of the vote to be selected as top platform manufacturer. Nintendo systems do print money, after all.

Similarly, the selection of Activision Blizzard (with 30.6 percent of the vote) to be the publisher most likely to dive into a pool of gold coins comes as little surprise. Activison Blizzard owns gaming's Automatic Money Generator(C), World of Warcraft, along with perennial mega-franchises like Call of Duty and Guitar Hero.

For a more detailed breakdown of the poll results, head past the break.
Continue reading Nintendo and Activision to be most profitable in 2009, survey says

Nintendo and Activision to be most profitable in 2009, survey says originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 18 Feb 2009 18:45:00 EST.
Okay, here's the deal. Remember Peekaboo Pole Dancing, the company which, back in May, confirmed its intent to make a pole dancing game for Wii? It still wants to - only according to MTV Multiplayer, it doesn't actually have anyone to make or publish the thing.

Peekaboo rep Simon Kay even went as far as to say, "Please feel free to give a shout out to any developers or publishers who want to give this a crack." So, who exactly should said shout be given out to? There's no guarantee that they'll listen - let alone actually say, "Hey, that's a great idea!" - but we'll be sure to deliver it the next time we speak to your top pick.
So, PlayStation Home is out. Many of you have experienced connection issues, but many others have managed to jump into the long-delayed online environment. We're wondering what you think about Home -- is it everything you hoped for? Or, do you agree with what Penny Arcade says: "it is nothing more than a cumbersome menu, a rampart over which you must hoist yourself to accomplish the most basic tasks." (That's incorrect! Where else can you have the joy of Quincy-ing? [video after the break])

Granted, this is an "Open Beta," which means many services and events just aren't available yet. There's a good deal of potential, as evidenced by Jem's recent visit to a Home press event. So, while we wait for the Spike VGAs, let us know what you think about Home in our poll.

When it was revealed that Nintendo's latest Channel would be one that reads fortunes, to say we were surprised would've been a huge understatement. Whether or not this will release to territories outside of Japan is anybody's guess, but what we want to know is would you want it to? Do you want to have your fortune read? Early last month, Free Radical put a poll up on their site asking folks which platform they would want to see TimeSplitters 4 on. Wii actually ended up winning the poll and now Free Radical has put up something new on their site.

Now, they've got a new poll up on their site, focusing on the Wii. While we're all for gathering information (hey, it's what we do), we have on simple request: just get to work on TimeSplitters4 already! Please? We'll, uh, draw you a picture of a unicorn or something.

[Thanks, Sonic_13!]
Free Radical teases Wii gamers some more originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 10 Nov 2008 21:03:00 EST. Following up on some presidential election polling results from September, Microsoft has revealed the results of its Xbox Live polling from the Halloween weekend. Obama jumped 10%, garnering 53% of the vote, while McCain gained two points for 33%, with 14% still undecided. Curiously, the Xbox Live poll had a similar Obama result to one done by CNN that same weekend.

On the "issues poll" conducted at the same time, "jobs and the economy" took the top spot with 35%. Meanwhile, education, environment, health care and foreign policy all received percentages in the mid- to high-teens. Microsoft notes that as part of the "Rock the Vote" campaign, a million pieces of election-specific materials were downloaded from Live, along with 80,000 voter registration forms. And, once again, don't forget to vote today!
Xbox Live US presidential election poll results originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 04 Nov 2008 15:20:00 EST. ... According to this Dengeki poll, anyway. The Japanese site conducted a survey of its readers just days before the Nintendo DSi launches in Japan, and discovered that most were pretty nonplussed by the shiny new upgrade.

The most surprising statistic? Only 3.6% stated they'd be purchasing the DSi "soon," a worryingly teensy minority, and perhaps another sign that the DSi won't match the Lite's epic launch. In the next bracket, 29.4% of readers said they'd wait a little bit before jumping in, but 40.7% said they'd already made their mind up against buying a DSi. The new, larger screens are the most attractive feature of the console, said 30.8% of respondents, but the two cameras got considerably less love: only 15.1% of people named them as the best bit of the DSi.

Exactly how representative Dengeki's survey is could be debated. There's no mention of how many readers voted, for example, and Dengeki readers undoubtedly represent a very small proportion of all potential DSi buyers. Still, 3.6% is, y'know, small. Free Radical, the folks behind the TimeSplitters games and former Rare employees responsible for GoldenEye 007, have tossed up a poll on their website asking one and all which platform they'd like to see TimeSplitters 4 release on. We all know it's coming, they know we know and now are asking us which system we prefer? At the time of writing this post, it looks like more people would like to see the thing release on PS3, but the system isn't winning by that much.

If you want TimeSplitters 4 on Wii, we'd suggest you head over there and make your voice heard. If you don't know what TimeSplitters 4 is, then we suggest you play all of the previous games or, in the least, the best title in the series. We just hope the new game still has a level editor.

Oh, and they also have some artwork up on their site, featuring a cat on wheels and one hot chainsaw-toting nun.

[Thanks, hvnlysoldr!]
Free Radical asks us to vote on TimeSplitters 4 platform originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 06 Oct 2008 13:48:00 EST. Of the last few days a number of users have contacted us regarding the status of Xbox Live. Many, if not most, of our recent messages point to the service working as expected after the service was forced offline, Tuesday night.

We contacted Xbox Live's Major Nelson (aka Larry Hryb) regarding some of the issues a few of our readers have reported, today. Major told us the Xbox Live technical staff have fixed the issues Live was experiencing on Tuesday and nearly all problems have been resolved in relation to the service. According to Major and the Xbox.com support page some users may experience problems browsing the Video Marketplace but the team hopes to resolve the problem very soon.

We take the question back to the streets. How is Xbox Live performing for you as of right now?

View Poll

Fanpoll: How is Xbox Live working for you? originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 02 Oct 2008 16:45:00 EST. With all the hubbub surrounding Castle Crashers this week, we were eager to download our own copy this morning. After trying out the single player campaign it was time to try out some online multiplayer. And that's when the problems started. Try as we might, we simply can't get into an online game. So far, we've managed to get into one game, but that abruptly ended after about a minute with the message that the game was no longer available. We've been reading various comments about it on the web and we've decided to put together a poll to see how everyone's experience has been so far. Give your feedback below.

View Poll

Poll: Castle Crashers connectivity issues? originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 27 Aug 2008 14:30:00 EST. Because there's nothing like heading to work as soon as you get home from work, Hudson is planning on bringing Hard Working People to North America. There's just one thing: it may not actually be called Hard Working People when it gets here. The game's final title is up for debate, or rather, vote; on Hudson's website, you can choose from possible titles like Help Wanted (currently in the lead), the good ol' Hard Working People, and Job Heroes, among others.

While this one looks pretty hilarious, we're always a little wary of games that require work (see also: Animal Crossing and more), but when that game is centered around working, we're doubly uncertain. Maybe we shouldn't be translating everything into a waggling mini-game simply because we can. Then again, Hard Working People really does look like Everything Mama, and thus could be promising. The jury, as they say, is still out. Out working.

[Via Siliconera]
Hard Working American People originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 14 Aug 2008 10:55:00 EST. We talk about homebrew a lot here at Wii Fanboy. We love the community and we love the cool things they're always cooking up. Some things look like they require at least some technical knowledge, some things look like they require absolutely none. What we'd like to know is how many of you enjoy the apps and cool things the homebrew community has come up with. So, head past the break and take part in our poll!
Continue reading Wii Fanboy Poll: Do you homebrew?

Wii Fanboy Poll: Do you homebrew? originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Aug 2008 21:19:00 EST. We've heard about various reports of the technical problems with Grand Theft Auto IV. We're conducting a network-wide poll with our friends at X3F and PS3 Fanboy to see how the Joystiq community has been afflicted with the issues. After voting, please let us know your specific problems in the comments below.

We received an incredible response from our Joystiq network-wide poll. With over 38k votes from Joystiq, PS3 Fanboy and Xbox 360 combined, we amassed a rather sizable sample size to study from. The conclusion? More people are picking up the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV. However, considering the sizable difference between PS3 and Xbox 360 userbases, we were surprised to see the PS3 version perform so well.

If these results translate into real-world sales, it would be clear that Microsoft's $50 million check to acquire exclusive DLC played little role in making the 360 version the de-facto version it may have hoped to become. With the potential for so much gameplay out-of-the-box, it seems that many gamers (42% of you, in fact) don't think DLC is too big of a selling point.

For complete analysis of the results, visit Joystiq.
Xbox 360 pulls ahead of PS3 in GTA IV poll originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 14 Apr 2008 11:30:00 EST. Parent-oriented video game site WhatTheyPlay.com had a poll earlier this week which caused the site's own editor to post W.T.F. on his personal blog. The results of the unscientific poll showed that respondents were almost equally disturbed by the idea of a "graphically severed human head" as they were by "two men kissing" in a video game. Respondents were actually far more offended by a man and a woman having sex, which received 37% of the vote, while dropping the F-bomb only received 10%.

As GamePolitics points out, the results are in line with traditional American values and legal precedent, which holds sex to a different First Amendment standard than violence. We're not judging one way or the other, but we know what actions might cause us to pause (possibly take a photo) if we saw them on the street and which would have us calling the cops.

[Via GamePolitics]
Gay kissing is slightly worse than severed heads, welcome to America originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 11 Apr 2008 12:49:00 EST. GamePolitics had a pretty sweet idea this week when it polled readers on who they thought the biggest political hypocrite is when it comes to the games industry. Was it Boston's Mayor Menino, who's seeking to pass a "games as porn" bill while trying to woo developers to the city; or perhaps California's Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger who... well, look at the man's career! Nope, the winner, by a wide margin, was New York's disgraced former governor Eliot Spitzer.

Spitzer wins the poll for actions like attacking Grand Theft Auto and making sensationalist statements like, "Children can even simulate having sex with a prostitute." Meanwhile, the governor was doing more than simulating when he played the role of Client 9 to a high-priced prostitution service. It's still as delicious to write now as it was a month ago.
Continue reading Spitzer wins GamePolitics' biggest political hypocrite poll

Spitzer wins GamePolitics' biggest political hypocrite poll originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Apr 2008 22:00:00 EST. Net Asia Co. Ltd. recently performed a poll, misleadingly showing Japanese gamers' handheld preferences by gender. The reason that we consider this survey misleading is because the DS Lite and DS Phat were split up into two different categories. Why not, then, split up the PSP-1000 (the original) and PSP-2000 (the newer, slimmer one)? Okay, so no one would actually pick the 1000 over the 2000, but splitting up the two DS models (and GBA models, for that matter) just doesn't make sense to us.

With that rant out of the way, though, the poll (in which 401 mobile phone users partook) shows that 42% of Japanese men prefer the PSP, while 30.3% prefer the DS Lite and 16.8% the Phat. As for women, 52.2% picked the Lite and 27.4% chose the Phat, while only 8.8% prefered the PSP. (Note: In case you're wondering why these numbers don't add up to 100%, the unlisted percents were split between the Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, and Game Boy Advance SP.)
Continue reading Survey says: Japanese women prefer DS, Men PSP

Survey says: Japanese women prefer DS, Men PSP originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Apr 2008 17:00:00 EST. There's a big game coming out this month. In case you haven't heard, it's called Grand Theft Auto IV. It's coming out on both Xbox 360 and PS3, and we're curious to see which console Joystiq network readers will choose. The poll will run on Joystiq, PS3 Fanboy and Xbox 360 Fanboy, but you can only vote once. Will PS3's free PSN multiplayer, or Xbox 360's exclusive DLC offerings, sway your purchase? Let us know. Voting will end this Sunday, at noon.
