Every new copy of Starhawk comes bundled with a free copy of Warhawk (PSOne) in Europe.

It's part of the online pass voucher, which is visible on the back of the instruction booklet for Starhawk. Once you input the code and unlock online functionality, the original Warhawk will be added to your download list. Here in The States, however, you need to grab one of the first-run "limited editions" available exclusively at GameStop.
Starhawk online pass grants free Warhawk download in Europe originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 09 May 2012 23:15:00 EST. The intro scene for Parasite Eve on PSOne didn't call for every audience member of a packed opera house to spontaneously combust on a whim -- every exploding pinkie finger was planned out by a twisted art director and put onto paper before it was recreated on-screen. Those very storyboards have now been shared with the just-as-twisted world by artist and former Squaresoft employee Marco Antonio Velasquez III.

It may make us equally twisted to share them again with you, but we've never run this thing on a premise of morality, so enjoy these pencil sketches of flayed human flesh, straight from Velasquez's DeviantArt.
Original Parasite Eve storyboards will blow your mind originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 05 Jan 2012 04:00:00 EST. Don't be surprised if you see America's Favorite Marsupial (after Kangaroo Jack) tooling around on the highways and byways of this great land. That's right: Crash Bandicoot is old enough to get his learner's permit.

To mark the big guy's 15th birthday, co-creator Andy Gavin took to his blog to share some memories of Crash's early days, naked baby photos, as it were. Our personal favorite is Gavin's story of trying to conduct an intensely technical conversation with Ken Kutaragi while (1) "pretty drunk" and (2) shouting over ear-splittingly loud music. It's a lot of fun, as are some of the Crash-centric memories readers have posted in the comments.

... And hey, while we're thinking about it, if you should happen to see Crash Bandicoot driving around, you should be wicked surprised, contrary to our intro. He's not only fictional, he's a bandicoot. It's an extremely unsafe situation that should probably reported to local law enforcement. Sorry for being so irresponsible.
Crash Bandicoot creator ruminates on the old days originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 10 Sep 2011 00:30:00 EST. Sony has confirmed prices and dates for its two PlayStation certified tablet computers, both coming out later this fall. The Tablet S is the more traditional tablet, with one screen and 16 or 32GB of storage, and will be out in September starting at $499. But the Tablet P is the more interesting option, offering two 5.5" display screens hinged together. Both tablets will use the Nvidia Tegra 2 chip architecture, sport dual cameras, and run Android-based software.

They'll also be fully compatible with Sony's services, including Video Unlimited and Music Unlimited, and they'll both play games from the Android Marketplace as well as run PSOne titles released for PlayStation-certified hardware. Both will come standard with Pinball Heroes and Crash Bandicoot ready to go, though the P will put controls on the bottom screen, leaving gameplay up on top.

The Tablet P will hit European shelves in November - North American details haven't been announced just yet. You can get a closer look at both devices in the gallery below and head over to Engadget for hands-on impressions of the Tablet S.
As both Europe and North America count down the (still unknown) days until the launch of Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play smart phone, PSOne games compatible with the "PlayStation Phone" have started popping up on the Android Market. Five games, in fact, including Cool Boarders 2, Destruction Derby, Jumping Flash, MediEvil 2 and Syphon Filter. That's right -- the Play is ready to, er, play like it's circa 1995-97.

All of the games are selling for £3.99 ($6) -- the same going price as on PSN. MediEvil 2 and Syphon Filter are available in five languages (English, French, German, Italian and Spanish) while the rest are English-only releases. They're also all (predictably) platform-locked to the Xperia Play (Sony Ericsson R800i). All this one day after Google removed the PSOne emulator, PSX4Droid, attributing the action to a Content Policy violation.
PSOne games begin appearing on Android Market, limited to Xperia Play originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 31 Mar 2011 19:10:00 EST. With the launch of Sony Ericsson's Android-powered "PlayStation Phone," the Xperia Play, supposedly right around the corner, Google has pulled the plug on a prominent PSOne emulator for its mobile OS. According to its author, "zodttd," PSX4Droid was removed from the Android Market without warning due to a "Content Policy violation," though he suspects it has more to do with Sony's imminent smart phone offering. "Sony's Xperia Play must be coming soon," tweeted the dev, adding that, "The timing is suspicious with no remedy."

As for alternatives to the Android Market, PSX4Droid's maker says he's a "bit worried to go to Amazon App Store" since "people who own the Market version would have to buy it again to update." Meanwhile, another PSOne emulator for Android, fpse, remains available on the Market. We've contacted Sony for its response to the app's removal and are awaiting comment.
PlayStation emulator pulled from Android Market, dev suggests Xperia Play to blame originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 21:30:00 EST. Sony Ericsson has (finally!) officially announced details on the Xperia Play, aka PlayStation Phone. The device will come pre-loaded with a "legendary" PS1 game, according to Kazuo "Ridge Racer" Hirai and a number of PlayStation titles will be available through the Android Marketplace "exclusively to Xperia Play" for a limited time. PlayStation Suite will be available later in the year.

In addition, Ericsson has revealed that 20 publishers are working on content on the device, with up to 50 games available at launch. Some of the brands you can expect on the device include the not-so-dead Guitar Hero, Assassin's Creed, Battlefield, and Dead Space. Notably, EA's FIFA will be "the first multiplayer FIFA game on mobile."

Many of the games available on Xperia Play are ports, and a partnership with Unity -- a cross-platform engine -- will allow for easy and optimized ports to Sony's mobile device. But there are some exclusives beyond PSone games: Dungeon Defender Wave 2, for example, is exclusive to the platform. Today's announcements make it clear that Android's finally got game -- but are you interested?

Gallery: Xperia Play

Xperia Play pre-loaded with 'legendary' PS1 game, will launch with 50 games from 20 publishers originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 13 Feb 2011 13:34:00 EST. This seems like a pretty natural fit -- the PlayStation Phone, which, hilariously enough, still hasn't been formally acknowledged by Sony, was recently captured on video running a PSOne emulator Android application called ROM Buddy PSX. It should be stressed that the handheld (which has supposedly been branded the Xperia Play) doesn't have this functionality built in -- the video is simply demonstrating how the Play's slide-out gamepad can be used to interact with the App, and the zombies therein.

Of course, that doesn't make the video any less dead sexy. Check out the video after the jump to see the PlayStation Phone living up to its unofficial name, playing ROMs of Resident Evil 2 and Rage Racer.
Continue reading PlayStation Phone caught on video playing unofficial PSOne Android app

PlayStation Phone caught on video playing unofficial PSOne Android app originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 10 Jan 2011 12:35:00 EST. A lot of these anniversary posts are fairly cursory, but this one genuinely makes us feel pretty old. Fifteen years ago on this day, Sony gave North America the system that ushered in the modern era of console gaming: the PlayStation. We thought that this might be a fun opportunity to share some of your favorite memories of the Old Gray Play-dy, whether it be the first time you stunned monkeys in Ape Escape, creating carnage in Twisted Metal or shouting "You gotta believe!" along with PaRappa the Rapper.

Happy birthday, big guy. Thanks for everything.
Continue reading PlayStation turns 15: Share your memories

PlayStation turns 15: Share your memories originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 09 Sep 2010 12:10:00 EST. Teiyu Goto is responsible for the design of the original PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 -- all very different-looking consoles, with one exception: the controller. This, too, was Goto's design, and in an interview with Famitsu (translated by 1UP) he shares some of its history, including the origin of its "handles" and the meaning behind the now-iconic symbols on its face buttons.

According to Goto, Sony management was initially resistant to the idea of the PS1's gamepad being too far removed from the design of Nintendo's SNES controller. "We wanted SNES gamers to upgrade to our system," Goto said of the corporate mindset at the time, "[management] said it had to be a standard type of design, or gamers wouldn't accept it." Goto disagreed, as did Sony's then-president, Norio Ohga. A pilot, Ohga liked Goto's prototype, which featured the now-standard handles, and made his feelings clear in an executive meeting. "They showed Ohga the flat controller again later and said that this is what they wanted, but Ohga was about to throw the model right back at them," Goto recalled, saying that Ohga's outrage let him know that the boss had his back -- and the handles stayed.

As for the button icons, Goto had an interesting explanation. While most people know -- or could guess -- that X and circle were meant to indicate "no" and "yes," respectively, Goto said that "the triangle refers to viewpoint; I had it represent one's head or direction," adding, "Square refers to a piece of paper; I had it represent menus or documents." These icons went on to represent the brand as a whole.
PS1 designer on the fight for controller handles, what the button icons really mean originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 25 Aug 2010 20:00:00 EST. A few weeks ago, Square Enix producer Shinji Hashimoto tailored a poll for fans (and Twitter followers), canvassing to find out what role-playing classics from the PSOne era they'd like to see patched onto the PlayStation Store. We've been on pins and needles anticipating the results, and have been in stitches since Hashimoto announced the results earlier this morning: The next Squeenix RPG to hit the PSN (after Final Fantasy IX, mind you) will be Threads of Fate.

If your mind isn't embroidered with memories of the original game, Threads is an action-RPG with platforming elements and Secret of Mana-esque radial menus. Though it was only released to a sew-sew commercial reception, it was unique in that it featured multiple characters, each with their own interwoven story arcs. Ask anybody who was old enough to go through the life cycle of the first PlayStation and they'll likely have an opinion on which Final Fantasy was the best. And "soon," a whole new generation will be able to engage in that most stimulating of debates, with the PlayStation Blog confirming that Final Fantasy IX will be the third "proper" PlayStation-era Final Fantasy game available for download on PSN, joining siblings Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII.

Joystiq itself takes no part in the ongoing war for supremacy each title is unwillingly engaged in. We simply aim to enjoy the good parts of each. But that doesn't mean you can't battle it out in this here poll!
Expect #SEM_DL to become a trending topic in Japan. Why? Square Enix is asking Japanese fans to submit their top three most wanted PSone classics on Twitter using the aforementioned hashtag. While Japan has a larger selection of classic titles on PSN already, there are some notable omissions. Fans (like the one above) have pointed out Chrono Cross, Dragon Quest VII, and Legend of Mana as some of their most desired games.

We're certain fans in America and Europe would love to take part in a survey like this. Until Square Enix decides to gauge our interest, why not submit your ideas to our comments section?
Kotaku reports that a survey from IPSOS Online Research has been sent out, gauging interest (again) in premium subscriptions to PSN. One of PSN's most-touted features has been its low price of free, so if Sony's thinking about asking for membership fees, it had better offer some extra goods, right?

Well, the survey hints at such goodies as hour-long trials for full PS3 titles, access to PSOne Classics and cross-game voice chat; the latter being a feature that PS3 gamers have been waiting on for decades but, if this survey is to be believed, would be exclusive to premium members. The survey also discusses the addition of Cloud Storage -- online space that allows users to store saved data, instead of housing it on their hard drive -- and Tokens. These Tokens would be a kind of added currency, which can then be used to redeem goods on PSN. But that's not it! It gets even crazier. The survey also adds member-exclusive programs into the mix, such as streaming Netflix without a disk and special Hulu support, as well as free access to Minis and premium themes.

The survey also details a few different subscription models, including a $69.99 yearly plan and several options for monthly fees. Hit up Kotaku for some supposed screen grabs from the survey detailing the subscription plans.

Rumor: Survey hints at premium PSN subscriptions originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 18 Dec 2009 18:29:00 EST. It's been a while since we were legitimately excited by an addition to the PSOne Classics storefront -- however, now we're waiting on bated breath for the PSN re-release of two timeless titles: Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee and Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus. The pair of PlayStation platformers will say "hey-lo" to the PlayStation Store this Thursday, where they'll be sold for $9.99 a piece.

We know we should be counting our blessings, but we're hoping the addition of these impossibly Odd titles is just a precursor to more PS1 platformers getting ported to the PSN. In simpler, less alliterative terms, we're gonna need someone to bring Heart of Darkness into the family of PSOne Classics. We're gonna need someone to do that immediately.
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee and Exoddus hopping to PSN this Thursday originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 Oct 2009 12:45:00 EST.
The ESRB has exposed a new round of PSone Classics for PS3 and PSP on its ratings site, including Naughty Dog creative director -- and Uncharted creator -- Amy Hennig's 32-bit opus, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. Other titles recently rated for re-release via PlayStation network include Bomberman Party Edition, Fighting Force, Dirt Jockey and International Track & Field.

After last week's deluge of classic PlayStation games gone downloadable on PSN, we were befuddled by the utter lack of any new additions with yesterday's update. Sony is printing money with its slowly expanding library of PSone classics on the PlayStation Store. Playable on both PSP and PS3, these downloadable titles have been an easy way to prey upon gamer nostalgia. Unsurprisingly, the most iconic games of the PS1 era take the top of the PSone downloads chart in the month of June:

Final Fantasy VII

Street Fighter Alpha

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Crash Bandicoot

Twisted Metal 2

Spyro the Dragon

Crash Bandicoot: WARPED

Crash Bandicoot 2

Wild Arms

Tekken 2

It shouldn't be too surprising to see multiple Crash Bandicoot games take positions in the top 10. He was, after all, PlayStation's official mascot back in the day. Let's remember him with some classic PS1 ads after the break.
Continue reading Final Fantasy, Street Fighter and Castlevania top the PSone sales charts

Final Fantasy, Street Fighter and Castlevania top the PSone sales charts originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 02 Jul 2009 16:15:00 EST. Square Enix fans can look forward to enjoying more Final Fantasy classics on the PS3/PSP in the future. The very first Final Fantasy game has been re-released as a PSN downloadable in Japan, and it looks as though many more are to come. This digital download isn't a PSN version of the PSP enhanced Final Fantasy. Rather, it's a downloadable version of the PSone remake. Siliconera notes that the PSone game includes FMV cinemas and an art gallery, but misses features found in the later GBA/PSP versions.

Considering all of the classic Final Fantasy games (minus III) were eventually ported on PSone, chances are good that PSN will play home to a very comprehensive library of Final Fantasy games. Who doesn't want to play Final Fantasy VI again?
Square Enix releases original Final Fantasy to PS1 archives, more to come originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 25 Jun 2009 15:00:00 EST. According to Siliconera, Capcom has just released Rockman Complete Works, a PS1 enhanced version of Mega Man 1 on the PlayStation Network. The problem? It's impossible for you to get. To celebrate the very-late PS3 release of Mega Man 9 in Japan, Capcom is holding a contest for those that purchase the game. Winners will be able to get either a free t-shirt, or a downloadable version of Rockman Complete Works.

We're certain Capcom won't restrict the release of Rockman to just this Japan-only contest. We wouldn't be surprised to see each and every Mega Man game released on PS1 to get its inevitable PSN re-release. Let's not forget, Capcom promised a lot of downloads this year ...
Enhanced Mega Man 1 on PlayStation Network, impossible to get originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 24 Jun 2009 17:45:00 EST. Finishing up Final Fantasy VII? (Wow, you're fast!) Don't worry, looks like there's even more classic PSone RPG goodness coming your way. Siliconera discovered an ESRB rating for Wild Arms 2. With games like Metal Gear Solid finally coming out on the PlayStation Store, it looks like Sony is finally doing good on its promise of delivering more PS1 games. Remember folks, these games can play on both your PS3 and PSP.
Wild Arms 2 rated by ESRB originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 19 Jun 2009 12:10:00 EST. The ESRB has revealed a list of games that could appear on the PSN soon. All six games (as detailed in the image above) are PS1 titles that have yet to appear on the PlayStation Store.

Are these the games Sony's John Koller was talking about when he said PSN was to receive more from the classics library? This list may not be the ultimate, but it's a start. With the mention of this, and Resident Evil having been loaded onto PSN yesterday, it looks like SCEA is fulfilling its promise of more PS1 classics.

Here's some further information on the six titles:

Contra: Legacy of War - top-down version of classic Contra shooting action

Dead in the Water - Think Twisted Metal ... on water

Ford Racing - Hmm, we think it may have something to do with racing

Mobile Light Force - Vertical-scrolling shmup

Spec Ops: Airborne Commando - More shooting action

XS Junior League Soccer - Soccer!

Does this look a little like a SNES to you? Well, it should. Sony's first steps into gaming came courtesy of its current competitor. Sony was to partner with Nintendo in creating a CD-based expansion for the Super Nintendo. The very first PlayStation would have been a powerful collaboration between two Japanese giants, but a controversial split between the two left Sony sidelined, bitter ... and determined to beat Nintendo at its own game.

Edge Online has a fantastic piece on the history behind the very first PlayStation system, detailing the system's unexpected rise to mainstream popularity. PS1 was a technological marvel for its time, pushing the boundaries of games to what was then considered super-computing. Sound familiar? Phil Harrison reminisced about the past: "This was a super high-end workstation. And Ken [Kutaragi]'s big vision was to take that, apply it in high volume and bring it into the home." Looking at the history of the PS1, it's clear that PS3 follows a heritage of bringing unheard of power to the masses.
The making of a legend: PlayStation 1 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 24 Apr 2009 16:15:00 EST. In hopes of bolstering its PSP PSN download scene, Sony plans to expand its digital catalog to include non-PlayStation console titles. "In general, there's a lot of discussion about [publishers'] back catalogs that will finally find its way to PlayStation Network in the back half of this year," said SCEA's John Koller to MTV Multiplayer. That would include both the promise of more PSOne titles (as North America seriously needs to catch up to Japan in that regard) and pre-PSOne retro titles.

Despite becoming more Virtual Console-ish, this expansion of the PSP side of PSN will also offer more portable versions of PS3 downloadable titles, such as PixelJunk Monsters and the already released Super Stardust Portable. Koller says that Sony's studios are preparing more internally developed download-only titles. This strong focus on digital distribution makes us wonder if the whole "dropping UMD" rumors are true.
Sony looking to make PSP PSN more like Virtual Console originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 03 Mar 2009 17:30:00 EST. Is the game drought over? We hope so. Capcom's John Diamonon hinted at increased PSP support in 2009 in a recent post on the PlayStation.Blog. "So what's in store for 09? Well, I'm working with Grace and Ro at SCEA to come up with some innovative ways we can offer games and programs on the PlayStation Store. You can expect to see a whole slew of downloadable PSP and PSone titles from our vault next year."

Capcom has released a number of great PSP games which we'd love to see re-released on the PlayStation Store. Mega Man Powered Up, anyone? However, their PSone offerings have us even more excited. Let's not forget that they released Breath of Fire, Marvel vs. Capcom, a whole slew of Mega Man games, Resident Evil and Street Fighter games during the PSone era. Having them on the go would be perfect.
'Whole slew of downloadable PSP and PSone titles' coming from Capcom in 09 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 27 Dec 2008 17:22:00 EST. This isn't a problem if you have access to the Japanese PSN, but browsers of the American PlayStation Store are unlikely to describe the pre-PS2 pickings as anything but "slim."

With that in mind, MTV Multiplayer asked Sony's head of hardware marketing, John Koller, if more downloadable classics were on the way. "Yes, we are working on further PSone additions to the PS Store and should see those launch shortly," came the answer. Though we're left to wonder just how "shortly" that is, we've already assembled a list of our favorite PlayStation games. Won't you vote in our poll and tell us which one you'd like to see on PSN next?

View Poll

More PlayStation oldies coming to PSN 'shortly' originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 23 Nov 2008 14:00:00 EST. How 'bout Coolboarders 2? That's pretty much all you'll find on the PlayStation Store if you're looking for a PS1 retro fix. While Japan has an overwhelming of retro titles available for download, the rest of the world has been slow to follow suit. Wouldn't it be nice to download Final Fantasy VII? Or Klonoa? Or Metal Gear Solid? There's so many titles we can think of off the top of our heads.

Well, John Koller is promising the situation will change. Seriously. Really.

Seriously. Really. "Yes, we are working on further PSone additions to the PS Store and should see those launch shortly," he told MTV Multiplayer.

We'll believe you when we see 'em, Koller.
Really, Sony's promising more PSone games.
The name Suda51 conjures up memories of some truly unique experiences, not the least of which being his most recent work, No More Heroes. For only a very few will it jog memories of a Japan-only PS1 release titled The Silver Case, which the designer announced is headed for PSN at the "Foreign Video Game Unlawful Assembly 2K8" he organized (and so wonderfully named).

It's not clear if the release will be Japan-only, although it has been previously announced that English-language Nintendo DS versions of a remade The Silver Case and its mobile phone sequel, Silver Case, 25 Ward are in the works. It's probably not too far a stretch to imagine the localized text could be used to create a North American PSN version of the game.

Most of us know that there are so few PS One titles on the North American PS Store and we're all wondering when the next wave of PS One games would be coming. While this isn't particularly a 'wave' per se (insert Hadouken jokes here), it is quite a powerful title with a lot of influence in the fighting-genre arena. We're talking about Street Fighter Alpha -- the first one. It was a title that prequeled the main Street Fighter series, fleshing out some of the world warriors' back stories.

If you missed it back in the day, then your chance to give the classic a try is coming. This Thursday, during the weekly scheduled PS Store update, Street Fighter Alpha will be available for download onto your PSP or your PS3. Capcom hasn't officially revealed the price yet, but we imagine it shouldn't be much different from other PS One classics.

[Thanks Eduardo!]
Street Fighter Alpha hits PSN this Thursday originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Aug 2008 22:30:00 EST. Classics like Biohazard 2 (aka Resident Evil 2) can be found in today's update to the Japanese Store:

Biohazard 2

Popolocrois II

Marie no Atelier Plus

Robin Lloyd no Bouken

BAROQUE

I.Q Intelligent Qube

Crime Crackers 2

Magical Drop

Tantei Jinguji Saburo - Early Collection.

Once again, many of these games will be unfamiliar to non Japanese gamers. Hopefully, it won't be too long until we get our hands on a zombie-infested adventure.

[Via PSPHyper]
Japanese PS Store updated with Biohazard 2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 26 Dec 2007 12:20:00 EST. DivX for the PS3 and internet radio for the PSP weren't the only treats buried in this morning's latest Sony firmware updates. Nope, they've got a little something special for those of you rocking both of Sony's latest consoles: PS1 games are now playable via Remote Play. What does that mean to you, Joe Gamer? You can download PS1 games on your PS3 through the PSN Store but, instead of swapping games on and off your no doubt ballooning Memory Stick, you can stream them straight from the PS3. You can also leave your favorite PS1 game in the drive and Remote Play that, if digitally distributed media ain't your thing.

Coupled with the PS3's recently acquired Remote Start capability and the PSP's internet-enabled Remote Play functionality, you can tap into that library of PS1 games at home from anywhere in the world. That's a pretty exciting feature ... but, there is one shortcoming: when's that library of PS1 games coming?

[Via PS3F]
New firmware enables PS1 games on PSP through Remote Play originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 18 Dec 2007 13:45:00 EST. When the chips are down and creativity's glass feels half empty, we know we can always look to the mavericks at Atlus to come up with something just a hair shy of normal for an experience that is, if anything, unique. With surgery sim Trauma Center: New Blood's release sewn up and a pair of Japanese-style strategy RPGs for the Xbox 360 on the way, Atlus is one of the last remaining 'garage bands' of video game publishing.

Now the company has announced its next project, namely a dungeon crawl-style action RPG called Baroque, describing the game as "hardcore" and "a pure RPG experience" for both the mini-game addled Wii and aging PS2. With an art style that is all its own, Baroque is set for release on both consoles in February, and is a remake of Japanese dev Sting's Saturn/PlayStation original, no doubt throwing yet another log on the fire for those weary of the Wii's growing catalog of last-gen ports. For us, we're just more interested in finding out what a trek through a post-apocalyptic dungeon has to do with excessively intricate art. Color us intrigued.
Atlus goes dungeon crawling for the Wii, PS2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 13 Dec 2007 12:30:00 EST. More noteworthy is that some of these titles are only 300 yen each -- that's less than $3! Sure, the budget titles involve the word "Fishing" in some way, but it's great to see even cheaper content make its way to the PS Store. Hopefully, with the US Store up and running, it won't be too long before we see new (and cheap) content.
Japan gets budget PS1 downloads originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Nov 2007 15:33:00 EST. Twisted Metal 2
Price: $5.99
Original Release Date: October 31, 1996

Recommended.
Once again, another stellar retro classic hits the PS Store, for play on both PSP and PS3. Twisted Metal 2 is an improved sequel of the most definitive car combat game of all time. There's a reason why Twisted Metal was so beloved: it had a lot of personality, with its apocalyptic levels and crazed vehicle designs. The relentless difficulty of the game and simplistic presentation take a lot away from this re-release, but at $6, it's still a fairly solid retread to invest in, especially for portable gamers.

Once again, the simple controls work well on the PSP (using control type 2). The cars are incredibly responsive, and can make unrealistically sharp turns at a moment's notice. It felt weird using Square to accelerate (instead of X), but there are very few surprises in the controls. Weapons are easy to switch between, and they're easy to use as well. It can become problematic to find enemies in the game's relatively large levels, but when competition is near, it's fast and furious.

Overall, what hurts this retro game is how difficult it is. There's multiple choices, but it's not easy to take down a racer, and health upgrades are few and far apart. It'll take a lot of luck and skill to survive the game's championship mode. Thankfully, the ability to play individual tracks will help you discover the locations of secrets, giving you a much-needed edge in a rather unfair fight.
Retro Review: 6.0
