Angry Birds go Ga Ga for Mercury to celebrate Freddie For A Day

'Freddie For A Day' is an annual event held on Freddie Mercury's birthday, tomorrow, to celebrate the former Queen frontman and raise money for the AIDS charity set up in his name. Angry Birds creator Rovio gets in on the act this year by releasing the above specially created animation. We've got to hand it to Rovio: the late, great Mr. Mercury makes a dynamite Angry Bird.

Freddie For A Day festivities continue throughout the week - although, Londoners, you've just missed out on glamming up The Savoy for a day. Luckily, there are still plenty of other ways to celebrate the rock legend and donate to a very worthy cause.

Rock Band Weekly: Queen

Next week's Rock Band DLC will be two track packs that are all Queen. One pack includes some Rock Band 3 upgraded tracks from Lego Rock Band, along with some lesser-ish known ditties, while the other is an extrabonanza of the band's most popular songs (which you might already own) reworked for RB3. That means: harmonies!

So, if singing like Freddie Mercury wasn't already hard enough, you're really gonna have to work as a team to nail those tracks properly. You are the champions, my friends. The full DLC track details are posted after the break.

Guitar Hero 5 and Band Hero: July DLC

This month, the Guitar Hero 5 and Band Hero DLC party starts off with a high-pitched bang, with three solid Queen tracks hitting the storefront later today. That bang becomes a guttural scream the week after, when Avenged Sevenfold drops a few songs. That scream becomes an "eww-ah-ah-ah-ah" one more week later, when Disturbed throws its hat in the ring. Finally, Shinedown will have some songs added to the service. (We don't know enough about their musical offerings to continue the metaphor.)

Report: Guitar Hero 6 dropping playable musicians, will work with previous DLC

Details about the upcoming sixth iteration in the Guitar Hero series (that is, if you don't count various spin-offs) have begun landing on the web from Official Xbox Magazine UK, reports GoNintendo. As Kiss' Gene Simmons proclaimed earlier this year, it seems he'll be emceeing the game. Alongside his appearance, Queen, Black Sabbath and Metallica's Lars Ulrich will also be showing up, though rather than being featured as playable characters, the various rockers will be recruitable characters for guidance through the game's campaign ("Quest Mode") -- that whole multiple lawsuit thing certainly couldn't have hurt Activision's decision, right?

Maybe most important of all is the inclusion of legendary New York City club CBGB (& OMFUG) as the game's "only real-world location" (at least to this former CBGB attendee), but we suppose you're probably more interested in hearing that "previous DLC" will allegedly be playable in number six ... or whatever. Activision wouldn't confirm the details with us, but you OXM UK subscribers are welcome to re-confirm the report's legitimacy in our comments section below.

Rock Band Weekly: A killer Queen pack

We've known for quite some time that Queen DLC was to grace Rock Band Weekly. Yes, we've dubbed it the "All The Good Ones Except for Bohemian Rhapsody" Track Pack, but that doesn't make the offering any less exciting. Next week's update will have living-room bands cringe as their respective vocalists attempt with all their might to sing like Freddie Mercury. Then again, if the kids of Glee can sing "Somebody to Love" together, then maybe everyone in the band should pitch in.

Brian May thinks Queen: Rock Band 'may happen'

In a recent interview with the BBC, Queen guitarist Brian May commented on his inclusion in Lego Rock Band, calling his brickification "the ultimate accolade." Shortly thereafter, the conversation got a bit more fascinating. May mentioned that there had been discussion "going on behind the scenes" about the possibility of a Queen: Rock Band akin to the Beatles-dedicated title, which dropped last month. He later added, "yes, we're into it, I think it may happen."

Queen's a great band. A really, really, really great band. However, Beatles: Rock Band was successful because of the immense cultural significance of the band upon which the game was based. We're not sure that Queen possesses enough historical relevance to work quite as well. Also, 10 of their best songs are hitting the Rock Band Music Store at the end of the month, meaning a dedicated title would probably dip into their weirder catalog. What say you, readers? Are you psyched about the prospect of rocking out to "The Invisible Man?"

Queen, Elite Beat Agents and Phoenix Wright make for a great combo

It's not often we're at a loss for words, but the potent combo of Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now," Elite Beat Agents and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is too much for our feeble little brain to handle. The gameplay looks incredibly punishing and, quite frankly, we wouldn't mind a few of Wright's cases going down like this.

Instead of failing to describe this fan-made mash-up any better, we're just going to direct you past the break, then into the comments section where you can heap on some praise of your own.

A rumor we heard in late August claiming Harmonix is planning to bring a slew of Freddie Mercury-voiced tunes to its rhythm platform is true. In the last week of October, the Music Store will be visited by the following tracks:

DJ Hero's Daft Punk trailer will 'Robot Rock' you

Let's say you couldn't believe the news that Daft Punk will appear in DJ Hero. Then how do you explain this trailer featuring the robotic duo pitting their track "Robot Rock" against Queen's "We Will Rock You?" Simple, silly -- it's real, and you really should watch it. Y'know, "support robot musicians" and all that.

As the trailer points out, the diode-packing DJs will also be mashing their music up with tracks from No Doubt, Young MC and Gary Numan, to name a few. Now, if you'll excuse us, we've got to get back to work on our DJ Hero playing robot.

Rumor: Rock Band 2 will import LEGO Rock Band tracks

Wired's GameLife cites a "highly-placed source close to Harmonix" as informing the site that Rock Band 2 owners will be able to rip tracks from the LEGO Rock Band game disc, just as they were able to do with songs from the original Rock Band. The source also notes that a "small fee" will probably be involved -- again, just as with Rock Band to Rock Band 2 song importing. ($5, in case you forgot.)

Along with this rumored feature, the site has posted a list of upcoming DLC, including 10 tracks from Queen and three from The Raconteurs due in October. Three songs from The White Stripes are listed for November release. Undisclosed material from Attack! Attack! and The Duke Spirit appears as undated Rock Band Network content.

When contacted for comment, Harmonix told Joystiq, "While we don't comment on rumors or speculation with regards to our upcoming downloadable content, we can promise that the Rock Band platform is poised to remain the unchallenged best value and source of music for rhythm games."

This supposed "leak" is very conveniently timed, given that Guitar Hero 5 releases tomorrow. Doncha' think?

Rock Band DLC to hit 1000 tracks by holiday with help of Queen, Nirvana & Elton John

Aside from announcing the first three Beatles albums to be released as DLC for upcoming tear-jerker The Beatles: Rock Band, MTV Games and Harmonix today revealed intentions to bring the Rock Band DLC count to 1,000 songs by this holiday. At the current rate Harmonix is releasing songs for the franchise -- without factoring in the Rock Band Network -- that's roughly 500 songs per year.

Additionally, the companies have revealed a number of the artists that will be contributing to the holiday goal, including Queen, Nirvana, Tom Petty, Elton John, Iggy Pop, The White Stripes, Pantera, Talking Heads, Korn, and The Raconteurs, as well as the ever elusive "and more." We all miss Freddy Mercury, but he lives on in each and every drunken karaoke performance the world over. Now fans can trade in their public embarrassment and enjoy this activity in the comfort of their own homes, with the release of the new Queen track pack in Guitar Hero: World Tour, available for download across all platforms. The pack features the songs, "C-lebrity," "Fat Bottomed Girls," and "We are the Champions," and is priced at 440 on Xbox Live (each track will set you back 160 individually) and $5.49 on PSN. Fret not, Wii owners, for this DLC is also available to you, with each track setting you back 200 Wii Points.

The new songs don't stop there, as a new recording of the classic James Bond theme song is also available on the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii, for 160, $1.99, or 200 Wii Points, respectively. Head past the break to sample each of these tracks.

SingStar Queen song packs coming to the EU SingStore tomorrow

Sony has announced that the first two SingStar SongPacks will be released onto the SingStore tomorrow. We would've liked to have seen SongPacks appear a little sooner, considering the game's been out almost a year, but considering the content of the first batch, we're not going to complain too much. The first two packs will contain classic Queen tunes, with each pack costing £4.49 (sorry, no € price yet) and containing 5 songs. Check out the track lists for each SongPack after the break

It seems these SongPacks will be a regular occurrence, as the press release states that more will be appearing every two weeks. We're not sure whether this means they'll replace the fortnightly update, or arrive alongside it. There's also no word on whether these tunes will be coming to America. Hopefully we'll get back to you when we know.

SingStar Disney brings magical glee to PS2 [Update]

Update: Looks like we got the platform wrong. SingStar: Singalong with Disney is a PS2 game.

What's the next generation of SingStar? You guessed it: SingStar: Singalong with Disney will bring karaoke lovers the classic Disney songs we've all known and loved, with classic Disney movie footage in the background. The enthusiasm in the audience is quite noticeable, looking at Jem's Twitter entry.

Other additions to the SingStar franchise were also revealed in Europe. SingStar Vol.3 Party Edition will add classic pop hits from Barry Manilow, Lionel Ritchie and Kate Bush sit alongside recent chart hits from The Ting Tings, Timbaland, Sara Bareilles and Coldplay.

Two download packs from classic rock group Queen will also be added to the SingStore.

UK tabloid reports that the Queen loves the Wii

Good news, Nintendo Defense Force -- the most powerful member of the British royal family just joined your ranks. According to The People, a weekly British tabloid, Queen Elizabeth II has been on a Wii Sports bender ever since her grandson, Prince William, received Nintendo's console for Christmas (or, for our friends reading this across the pond, the day before Boxing Day).

According to the rather journalistically unsound article, Her Majesty the "QWiiN" (sigh) is quite the gadget savvy monarch, owning an iPod, blackberry, and fully pimped-out mobile phone, so her interest in the Wii is not so unnatural. We wish the Queen the best of luck in finding her own system -- we hear those things are harder to find than ... wait, there's nothing harder to find than a Wii. Except two Wiis, we guess.
