Sega recently announced that the Sega Master System versions of R-Type will be removed from the Wii's Virtual Console on September 30. No reason was given for the game's removal, but these things usually involve business mumbo-jumbo surrounding licensing issues. If you have any interest in this milestone of the shmup genre, grab it while you can.

Coincidentally, Irem, which developed R-Type, removed several titles from the Japanese PSN back in August, including several R-Type games. No reason was given for those edits either.
R-Type being removed from Virtual Console on Sept. 30 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Sep 2011 16:58:00 EST. "But wait," some of you youngsters might be thinking. "How can those stickers I'm always seeing on Toyota Celicas and Mitsubishi Eclipses be coming to my phone? Why would I even want that?"

Take a seat, junior, you might learn something: Before R-Type adorned the window/bumper of every import with a fat pipe and under lighting, it was the name of one of the most iconic and ground-breaking shooters ever made. And now, retro-game refurbisher DotEmu is bringing Irem's historic xenophobic extermination simulator back to life on September 12, via the Android Marketplace and Amazon's AppStore for Android.

All of the items and power-ups from the original are said to be present and accounted for, with touch controls taking over for the obviously absent joystick and buttons. Remakes like this strike us as perfect candidates for the Xperia Play, though no details were given as to whether or not Android devices with buttons will be able to circumvent the touch controls. No price point or Android OS version requirements have been given either, but we'd be surprised if it required anything newer than 2.2.
Continue reading R-Type coming to Android September 12

R-Type coming to Android September 12 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 28 Aug 2011 20:00:00 EST. It was last November when we first heard that DotEmu was at work porting Irem's classic 1987 arcade shmup R-Type to iPhone. Yesterday, EA Mobile made it official: it'll be publishing the game on the App Store "this summer," but couldn't get more specific due to the unpredictable nature of Apple's app approval process.

We had a chance to get our hands on the game at EA yesterday and we've got to say, the port has turned out great, with three control schemes (touch to move and shoot, tilt to move / touch to shoot or an overlaid d-pad and buttons) plus options such as autofire and the ability to switch between full-screen and the original coin-op aspect ratio. Cleverly, DotEmu has created separate on-screen buttons for charged shots and launching the "Force" pod away from the player's R9 fighter.

Check out the screens below and we'll let you know when the game hits Apple's virtual store shelves.
The game stars Ilo and Milo, two miniaturized Teletubby-looking creatures exploring "surrealistic and ever changing" environments, forever questing to be reunited.

The game's first trailer (seen above) has the pair traversing worlds that evoke Echochrome, only with, well, gobs more color (not to mention tons more charm). No release window is given for the title, but when it does eventually come out, friends can join up online to control one character each and take on the game's four worlds cooperatively. Apparently Ilomilo will also feature "famous cameos from other games" hidden within each level, though given Southend's past titles (based on other companies' IP), we can't possibly imagine what that could mean. Will we find an Arrowhead space ship somewhere in the game? The future is unknown, folks. For now, get your "DAWWWWWW"s ready and check out the smattering of Ilomilo media above and below.
CEO Xavier Liard told Touch Arcade, "We are very pleased to work on R-Type and to start our collaboration with Irem Software Engineering Inc." DotEmu didn't announce which of the many versions of R-Type will be the basis of the port.

Having IREM involved seems like a good sign and, while the touch interface is not ideal for shooting games, Space Invaders Infinity Gene proved that it can work, at least better than it does for platforming or run & gun games. There's been a way more competent version of the game available since 2006!
This week's content for European Nintendo fans is quite the bevy of scrumptious content. There's a new chapter in the Tales of Monkey Island franchise to laugh through, as well as some new stuff for your little ne'er-do-well in My Life as a Darklord. If WiiWare isn't your thing, you could always shoot everything in sight in some R-Type on the Virtual Console. See? Totally a bevy.
Xbox Live gold members can pick up R-Type Dimensions for the reduced price of 800 ($10) this week. How is that reduced, you ask? Well, for some strange reason, the side-scrolling shmup is normally a tad on the expensive side at 1200 ($15).

At present, though, its probably best to spend those Microsoft space bucks on the excellent 'Splosion Man or wait a couple weeks until Shadow Complex releases. However, if you gotta have the R-Type, at least you'll get a deal on the game this week.
The team is working on a sequel to its first PSP game, R-Type Tactics, awkwardly titled Operation Bitter Chocolate. Unlike previous R-Type games, the Tactics series strays far from its shmup origins, offering Advance Wars-esque turn-based strategy in its stead.

The debut trailer for Operation Bitter Chocolate is stylish, but we're still not entirely sure what inspired its candied name. Perhaps it's solely to bundle chocolate replicas of the franchise's iconic Arrowhead with each copy of the game. The sequel, which has the bizarrely great title R-Type Tactics II: Operation Bitter Chocolate, will include twice as many units as the original shmup spinoff, along with new commands and a branching storyline. Bitter Chocolate will also offer downloadable missions.

When the sequel launches on October 29, it will be released both on UMD (with a bonus soundtrack disc) and as a cheaper download, which is kind of a good idea, considering that the PSP Go will be out in Japan on November 1.

Famitsu: IREM offering R-Type Command fans some Bitter Chocolate originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 29 Jul 2009 18:00:00 EST. We would have expected such a game to come from an American publisher first, so we're a bit surprised to see ASW premiere it in Japan. Not surprised enough to pay that much attention.

Our attention is fixed, instead, firmly on the Virtual Console. Between the proto-strategy game Famicom Wars and Namco's arcade arena combat game Cyber Sled, it's a pretty awesome week to have a Wii in Japan. Even if we're pretty sure the Virtual Console Arcade version of Cyber Sled can't have multiplayer (since the arcade game used separate cabinets for each player).

Virtual Console:
Most notably, Square Enix's GDC-announced plan to release vintage Final Fantasies on VC starts next month with the obvious choice for the starting point: the first Final Fantasy.

Also very, very cool: SimEarth plus a samurai-themed River City Ransom sequel and the first game in the series that we would come to know as Advance Wars. This one's called Famicom Wars because, you know, it's on the Famicom.

Famicom
With 14 stages, cooperative play, a new camera mode, plenty of game stats and the inclusion of checkpoint saves (woohoo!), R-Type Dimensions looks to be a winner. But before you commit to an XBLA purchase, know that Dimensions will cost you 1200. Been jonesing to play more Arkanoid ever since that thing came out back in 1986? It was Breakout on steroids, and ate quarters like Cookie Monster eats chocolate chip cookies. Super Arkanoid and Space Invaders Extreme will be out on XBLA this winter, and it'll be joined next year by Metal Slug 7 , R-Type and The King of Fighters '98: Ultimate Match.

The games will all be updated with new graphics, music, two-player and online modes, and will do a good job towards filling that vintage hole in your heart. The Bydo Empire just won't stay dead, as Australia's Office of Film and Literature has rated a previously unknown title called R-Type Dimensions for the Xbox 360. Little is known about the game other than it is being authored by Lode Runner dev Tozai, leading us to believe that the title, be it a shooter, strategy game, or some kind of R-Type-themed cooking sim, will be released over XBLA.

While R-Type Dimensions has yet to be rated by the ESRB, we doubt an official announcement is far behind. What we do wonder, however, is that if this does turn out to be a XBLA shooter, what the folks at Tozai know that Cave does not.

[Via GamerBytes]
OFLC rates R-Type Dimensions for Xbox 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 04 Aug 2008 08:30:00 EST. It didn't take long for Atlus' R-Type Command to go to the bargain bin. The Irem-developed SRPG had a great Advance Wars vibe, but for many, going away from the series' arcade legacy kept them disinterested. Well, the game is now 50% off its original price on amazon.com. You can pick it up for $19, plus shipping.

[Thanks, Eric!]
Deal: R-Type Command for $19 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 23 Jul 2008 00:15:00 EST. For some reason, PSP games take a while to reach the European market. The upcoming release of Crisis Core, for example, is comically late compared to the Japanese and American releases. (At least Square Enix is making up for the tardiness through a number of great bonuses in the territory.)

R-Type Tactics, Irem's strategy game for PSP, is finally announced for release in Europe. It will be available on September 26th, and will be distributed by Rising Star Games. The game is unlikely to be enhanced for its release there, but who knows? Maybe Rising Star will figure out a pre-order bonus as cool as Atlus'.

R-Type Tactics targets Europe in September originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Jun 2008 12:30:00 EST. When Atlus revealed the pre-order bonus for R-Type Command, we were pretty excited. Getting a replica ship sounded awesome ... until we found out that assembly is required. Yeah, we're lazy bums: we like having our ships pre-built for us! While the process of building the R-9 model isn't too cumbersome, one step (as seen in the instructions) had us completely frustrated: "if hard to attach, file off some of excess plastic." Why weren't these cut correctly in the first place?
R-Type Command pre-order bonus: assembly required originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 May 2008 12:45:00 EST. If you're looking forward to the upcoming May 6 release of R-Type Command for the PSP, but are wondering where to pick it up, Atlus USA might have just made the decision a tad easier. The company has announced that for a "very limited" time those who buy the game from GameStop, Amazon.com, GameCrazy, EB Games Canada, and other select retailers will be able to take home a free plastic miniature replica of the game's R-9 spacecraft, which we imagine to be perfect for keeping your desktop safe from the Bydo Empire.
R-Type Command to include R-9 collectible originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 01 May 2008 09:15:00 EST. If you were on the fence about picking up R-Type Command, you may want to think again. Pre-orders of the upcoming tactical game will receive a rather spectacular bonus: a replica R-Type ship! For fans of the franchise, this bonus alone should be worth the cost of admission. ACHILLES / Human
As the R-Series went into mass production, an obvious flaw emerged: its melee capabilities were severely lacking. To balance this weakness, development began on a line of bipedal modules. The first of these was the Achilles, a unit equipped with multiple beam swords.

Continue reading The units of R-Type Command

The units of R-Type Command originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 19 Apr 2008 09:45:00 EST. The screens keep coming in for Atlus' upcoming R-Type Command. As one of the only games to come out on PSP for the next few months (seriously), we've resigned ourselves to pay close attention to the game. Thankfully, what we've played hasn't looked too shabby -- if we did, we really wouldn't have anything else to play in the coming months.

Check out our updated gallery:

Take command of these R-Type screens originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 09 Apr 2008 11:15:00 EST. We recently sat down with Irem's upcoming R-Type Command. Atlus is publishing the game in the States, and we have to admit that we were surprised by the new direction for this classic franchise. While we do wish it were a traditional shooter, we think Command's strong production values and accessible gameplay make it a nice addition to the PSP library so far.

Anyone who has played Advance Wars on GBA/DS will find themselves in very familiar territory. This turn-based strategy game has players taking command of various units in an attempt to wipe out the invading Bydo army. Players are given an assortment of vehicles to choose and place, each with their own abilities and weaknesses. As is traditional, units can only move a certain number of spaces, and can only attack within a certain firing range. Tiles within the environment can affect the evasion of certain units, so movement is crucial to every battle.

Each unit has multiple types of ammo, each with their own accuracy and damage. When defending, players can sometimes opt to evade altogether, or attempt a counter-attack. Every step of the battle will require some crucial decision making skills from the player.

Continue reading PSP Fanboy hands-on: R-Type Command

PSP Fanboy hands-on: R-Type Command originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 08 Apr 2008 15:30:00 EST.
Atlus is bringing over R-Type Command over to the States, and IGN has some direct-feed footage of the game in action. As is well known around these parts, Command ditches the usual shoot-everything-that-moves formula that the franchise is known for with a much more tactical approach. Watch, and tell us if you're still intrigued, or if you're trigger finger is begging for a more traditional shooter.

R-Type Command gameplay vids originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 03 Apr 2008 21:30:00 EST. One look at the PSP release calendar in April will send shivers down your spine: there's almost nothing coming out on PSP this month. Why is that? We're not exactly sure. Perhaps developers are in a post God of War and Crisis Core daze?

The next big game on our radar is R-Type Command, set for release in May. While that's a long while away, we can at the very least, look at these new screenshots released by Atlus. If it's on the PSP, it's going to be tactical. R-Type Command is a unique strategy-infused interpretation of the classic side-scrolling shooter. Atlus is handling the US release, and they've just unleashed a few new screenshots for you to enjoy.

These new screens will give players a new glimpse of the battle against the Bydo. R-Type Command is scheduled to release on 5/6/08.

R-Type Command: new screenshots originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Mar 2008 14:30:00 EST.
Guess that God of War disc that Sony sent us had us a little ... distracted. We forgot to show you the debut trailer for R-Type Command, coming to PSP this May. RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

As you can see, we follow Atlus USA's requests to the letter. The quirky company has asked us to tell you lot about R-Type Command, "a bold new turn-based strategy entry in the long-celebrated series of side-scrolling shooters." Hitting the PlayStation Portable on May 6th, the game has players going up against the evil "Bydo Empire" in "exciting tactical gameplay!" The exclamation mark is theirs.

You'll have close to a hundred different upgradeable units at your command, including those hailing from the aforementioned Bydo Empire. Oh, and a little protip for those eager to engage in the wireless Ad-Hoc multiplayer: Make sure your underwater module with powerful anti-air missiles and torpedoes doesn't lose its resupply function! It seems the rumour from November turned out to be true. Atlus USA has today announced that R-Type Tactics will be heading to the US under the new name of R-Type Command. This entry into the R-Type saga will be in the form of a turn-based strategy game and will be available from May 6th for the recommended price of $39.99. We're happy to see this game finally make its way out of Japan, but why so late? May 6th couldn't feel further away.

R-Type Command coming to PSP on May 6th originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 13 Feb 2008 13:15:00 EST. One of our favorite publishers, Atlus, may be bringing Irem's PSP-exclusive tactics game, R-Type Tactics, to the US soon. The tentative date for release is supposedly March 4th and will retail for $39.99 under the title R-Type Command. Unlike previous R-Type games, Command is a turn-based strategy game.

[Thanks, Joe! Better call <strike>Ridley</strike> Ripley. It looks like the upcoming PSP-exclusive tactical game, R-Type Tactics is getting some mean creatures, eerily reminiscent of <strike>Tony</strike> Ridley Scott and James Cameron's Aliens. New screenshots of the game highlight some monstrosities, such as one creature that looks very much like a Metroid. Other looks at the gameplay make it evident: this isn't your father's R-Type. We're still cautious about the new direction Irem is taking the franchise, but we can't wait to find out more.

[Via PSPHyper]
R-Type gets an Alien look originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Aug 2007 16:40:00 EST. Okay, so we admit we're a little biased. Any time we see Irem do anything, we want to report it. They've released ten new screenshots of their upcoming strategy game, R-Type Tactics. While they look good to us, we'd love it if Irem released a demo, so that we can fully understand how to play the game. We're sure R-Type will be fine as a strategy game, but a nagging voice in the back of our head remains a little unsure ...

Check out our updated gallery for all the pictures.

Ten new R-Type Tactics screenshots originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 29 Jun 2007 16:00:00 EST.
Making up for its delayed arrival to Australia's Virtual Console, the TurboGrafx-16 will debut in the world's smallest continent next week with eleven releases! Hudson's VC site lists that over a third of the games will be shmups -- no big surprise there -- but classics like Dungeon Explorer, Military Madness, and Bomberman '93 are also set to appear at the system's opening ceremony.

The US, having been spoiled with dozens of TG-16 releases since the Wii's launch, will receive only one PC-Engine title next Monday: Dragon Spirit, an impossibly hard, vertical-scrolling shoot 'em up in which you pilot a blue dragon. Check past the post break for Hudson's planned releases across all territories this July.
Continue reading Torrent of TurboGrafx-16 titles set for Australia's Virtual Console

Torrent of TurboGrafx-16 titles set for Australia's Virtual Console originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 29 Jun 2007 12:00:00 EST. If you haven't heard, Irem is working on a new R-Type game for PSP. R-Type Tactics looks to take the series in a bold new strategic direction. Tactics will feature all-new turn-based battles based on grids ... while retaining the series' trademark good looks and massive explosions.

Check out the first direct-feed screenshots of the game in our gallery below. Then, visit the official Japanese website to find out more about the game (provided you understand Japanese).

[Thanks, Thien!]
A first look at R-Type Tactics originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 25 May 2007 11:45:00 EST. According to a blurry Famitsu scan, a new R-Type will attempt just that. R-Type Tactics features traditional side-scrolling shooting action confined to a turn-based grid system. Instead of cursing bosses for cheap kills and numbing your fingers slapping the fire button, you'll take turns attacking and plotting devious schemes with your enemies. Look for the strange mix of genres on the PSP in Japan later this year.

[Via PSP Fanboy]
Continue reading R-Type Tactics makes shooting a strategic experience

R-Type Tactics makes shooting a strategic experience originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 23 May 2007 15:56:00 EST. R-Type Final wasn't so final afterall. The latest issue of Famitsu reveals a new iteration to the once-dead R-Type series, and like so many other PSP exclusives, this also features Tactics at the end of its title. Unfortunately, due to the abysmal quality of the image, it's hard to decipher much about the game. <strike>For example, how tactical is it? Is Irem involved in any way? We'll try to provide you the details as soon as we get them.</strike>

[Update: IGN has translated much of the information. "R-Type Tactics looks like a traditional shooting game, right down to the side-scrolling perspective, only instead of freely moving about and blasting enemy ships, you take turns with the enemy, making careful movements over a grid." Because Final was meant to be the last R-Type game, this strategic twist is meant to bring something "new" to the table. Do you approve?]

[Thanks, crithit5000!]
R-Type Tactics revealed in Japanese magazine originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 23 May 2007 00:45:00 EST.
